Dirk Nowitzki Thinking of Sitting Out the All-Star Game?

With the goal being to be as healthy as possible come Playoff time, Nowitzki wouldn’t mind not making the trip to L.A next month. From ESPN: “The face of the Dallas Mavericks’ franchise is in the midst of what might be the most efficient offensive season of his surefire Hall of Fame career. He deserved mention as an MVP frontrunner before suffering a sprained right knee … and the Mavs’ miserable performance in nine games without him arguably made his case even stronger. It’s just that everybody would be better off if Nowitzki’s streak of All-Star Games ended this season. The league could use the roster spot to showcase some of the spectacular young talent filling up box scores and creating buzz in the Western Conference. And Nowitzki needs the rest. It’d be different if Nowitzki, the NBA’s 10th-leading scorer at 23.4 points per game, needed his ego massaged by making his 10th consecutive All-Star appearance. That’s not the case. It doesn’t sound like it’d bother him a bit if the West coaches vote for rising stars such as the Clippers’ Blake Griffin, Timberwolves’ Kevin Love and Trail Blazers’ LaMarcus Aldridge and leave him watching from the couch. ‘You want to be healthy for the real games, but representing the Mavericks has always been important to me and to the fans in Dallas, so it is a little bit of both,’ said Nowitzki, whose ground-bound, fundamentally sound game isn’t really suited for the All-Star stage anyway. ‘If I’m not 100 percent, then I probably shouldn’t be out there.’ Nowitzki mentioned that there is still a long time to go before the Feb. 20 game at Staples Center, but the coaches vote for reserves next week. His health issues give them an excuse to leave him out of the West’s loaded frontcourt rotation.”

Baah humbug. He’s just trusting his knee now (the knee sleeve was off vs. NJ) and ASG is weeks away. If he came back prematurely (not unlikely given the team’s record in his absence) then thats on him and the Mavs staff. If you get voted in, show up, play 10 mins and chill on the bench while blowing spitballs at Popovic. Anything to make Mr. superintense pop a bloodvessel in his scowling face.

He might as well. He aint doing anything in the play-offs anyway.

    1. doing nothing in the playoffs? What about 06? There haven(t been a lot of teams in the finals in the last decade…
    2. Dirk is always better in the playoffs than in the season
    3. we ,Mavericks fans, never got Gasol or Garnett for Nothing in a trade… How many rings for Kobe without Shaq and Gasol??
    4. Dirk must be named to replace Yao in the starting 5 then if he chooses not to go that’s his problem.
    5. Dirk is the MVP, look at the Mavs record without him.
    6. Saturday night, Dirk not 100 percent healthy, game winner against the Nets.

From a Mavericks fan, with ir without Dirk, but these eleven years have been a blessing.

@bambe “there haven’t been a lot of teams in the finals in the last decade”? Probably around 2 each year i would say

  • Jose

Well It would be nice to see Dirk give up aa spot for one either Blake, Love, Aldridge

  • El Black Mamba

Lmao! @ spit hot fiyah’s comment ..I was thinking the same thing

  • bambe

OK Guys My point was: of the 30 nba teams, only 11 went to the finals in the last ten years ( lakers, pacers, sixers, nets, spurs, pistons, mavs, heat, cavs, celtics, magic)

Being in the NBA Finals ( and the best regular season team of the decade) is not too bad I think.

I Know about that ring. It’s still missing.

other than getting dunked on by Lebron a few back, he hasn’t had a memorable All Star outing to date so I have no problems with him sitting out…..lol I miss All Star Games like 2001 where top to bottom it was just a blast to watch

It seems Dallas fans while loyal do not understand playoff basketball, don’t worry your owner is just as clueless.Dirk sits out the playoffs after round one most of the time because he is ultra soft,Let me see who is a worse defensive player?Oh yeah,Peja, now Dallas will play 3 on 5 on the defensive end come the playoffs. As for your whine about he never played with anyone, how about a 2 time MVP “Nash” Dallas needs Defense, toughness,an enforcer,or Dirk will be back early to practice FT’s and be the Greatest 7 foot perimeter player,If they ever start a horse league I want Peja, and Dirk, until then, trade em
