Dwight Howard Frustrated With Orlando’s Perimeter Defense

Dwight may be the reigning two-time Defensive Player of the Year, but he can’t guard everyone on the court simultaneously. Hear that, perimeter defenders in Orlando? From the Sentinel: “The Orlando Magic’s locker room had a weird vibe after the game. Half the team had left by the time the media came in, and the players that were there and spoke to the media — Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Quentin Richardson and Gilbert Arenas — were decidedly somber (well, except for Arenas, who doesn’t seem bothered by much), more so than after other recent losses. It appears [last night's] 103-96 loss to the lowly Detroit Pistons — in which the Magic’s perimeter defense was their primary downfall — really stung. And it showed, especially with Dwight Howard. ‘Either we get it together or we’re just going to be a playoff team that doesn’t win a championship,’ Howard said. ‘Guys got to guard on the perimeter, got to do a better job. It just can’t be one dribble to the basket. So you got to do a better job.’ Howard’s teammates know he’s frustrated and know they must improve on defense. There were no jokes, no impersonations and no friendly banter with Howard in the locker room — he appeared quite bothered by the loss. ‘He was frustrated tonight overall,’ Gilbert Arenas said of Howard. ‘I think easy plays that should’ve been made to him weren’t getting to him, and that kind of frustrates a guy who’s been dominating for the last month.’ The players on the perimeter took responsibility for the loss.”

uhm what did you expect lol, that team just traded for 3 of the worst perimeter defenders of any starters in the whole league.

  • connor

start gilb instead of someone whos like 5’9 or else magic might lose howard

  • neaorin

you mean guys like JRich, Arenas and Turkoglu aren’t lock down defenders? Who knew?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    SURPRISE!!!!

  • JTaylor21

But I thought that DHow was just as a defender as Robinson, Deke, Zo, Hakeem, and Russell? Damn, what happened.

  • orl.chris

    should’ve never traded courtney lee…

  • Towelie

    Should’ve never traded Rafer Alston.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Should’ve re-signed Shaq.

  • JTaylor21

    Should’ve kept Armstrong.

  • Roberto

Wasn’t this almost the exact same headline used right before they traded Carter, Lewis, Pietrus, and Gortat?

  • tavoris

what perimeter defense? Do they call the matador job the wings are doing “perimeter defense” now?

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

Dwight for Andrew Bynum and Matt Barnes. Do the salaries work? I’d love to see LA rob Orlando again. You know, just for sh!ts and giggles…

I give JJ Redick, Jameer Nelson, and Jason Richardson credit because they give an effort on defense. I’m looking at Gil and Hedo though to play more than just one side of the game.

  • greg

hedo does it for a few minutes at a time but hes still not in good enough shape stamina wise to do that

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Jameers not the glove? Jrich isnt bowen? Hedo aint tayshaun? Gils not george hill? …….. …… ……Dwight hates his no d teammates, and just might hate stan. He’d sure love to play on a for real defensive minded team and win titles. His free agency is comin soon. Dwight would be smart to consider signing with the spurs. …….. …… ….. Im dreaming…. …. …. … But it would result in many rings

  • dma

hey dwight, your perimeter players hate your free throw shooting

  • elmaar

I tell you this – if dwight and deron play together they’ll be unstoppable, easily the best and most effective duo in this league and I hope that really happens, cos this magic team ain’t goin nowhere
and I have already said it – otis is not a GM

  • hh604

READ THIS!!! if otis smith & stan vg were smart they shouldve traded carter, pietrus & gortat for jrich, hedo, and clark. kept lewis instead of signing gil and started the lineup of jameer, jrich, lewis, bass, & dwight with reddick, anderson, hedo being role players off the bench. u still got duhon, clark and qrich to throw garbage minutes to. u saw washington beat boston, lewis starting at the 3. smhhhhh youtube.com/hollyhood604

Tarzan, Dwight coached by Pop would be dope for sure. In a recent interview (click my name) Pop said he’s not ready to retire just yet.
