Knicks’ Donnie Walsh Denies Pursuit of Carmelo Anthony

The Knicks’ GM claims that he’s not trying to acquire ‘Melo from Denver, which of course, no one is going to believe. From the NY Daily News: “The Knicks are obviously interested in acquiring Anthony, but there are several hurdles to overcome. Do the Knicks have a package that is more attractive than what the Nets have offered? Does Donnie Walsh want to blow up the roster to add Anthony or does he take the chance that Anthony opts for free agency and signs with the Knicks in July. ‘I don’t have anything going with Denver,’ Walsh told The News Wednesday. ‘Nothing.’ Several league executives question whether the Knicks would be willing to gut their roster to meet Denver’s demands since the organization is enjoying its best season in 10 years. Plus, the Knicks may have to take back one or two long-term contracts from Denver. ‘I get the sense that they (the Knicks) will ride it out,’ said one rival GM. ‘They’re on a roll. Why mess with it.’ ‘Look,’ Walsh said about being OK with keeping the status quo this season. ‘I had a plan and I’m trying to build on the plan. If there was a reason to change the plan I’d change it.’”

he’s not lying, the knicks have no reason to trade away their whole roster for him after learning about his wanting to come over to ny. As soon as they learned about he wouldnt sign an extension if it isnt ny they pulled away from the trading table. Also seeing the nets lose every game while they are winning and grinning helps as well.

In the end, Carmelo Anthony WILL be traded to the New York Knicks before the trade deadline expiries. The Knicks have better assets to offer than the Nyets do, it’s just in the form of players, not draft picks. Curry and Chandler is the obvious starting point for the Knicks to get Carmelo back…if ROY candidate Landry Fields goes in a package to Denver too, then the Nuggets need to send back a shooting guard, perhaps Arron Afflalo? Hmmm

it would be so funny if some other team just snuck in there like melo for artest, bynum, shannon and picks or something. or noah and deng.

  • Fboy

Good. The knicks don’t need Carmelo. If they want to be serious contenders they need to pick up the best big man in the league Erik Dampier

  • LA Huey

Interesting. (accepting this as truth) The Knicks will just stand pat and let Melo come to them? That would be the best move on their part but I just can’t see Melo or NYK patient enough to let it happen.

The deals that are made are the ones that are never discussed before hand.

So theyre going after OJ Mayo then right? jp

I just read Minnesota is willing to part with a first round draft pick for Anthony Randolph.
Walsh is trying to decide whether or not to pull the trigger. Only reason he would is for a crack at Melo.

I really believe that the Knicks shouldn’t be trading for Melo…the team that they have is pretty damn good as is. It would make more sense to add him to the roster they already have…so, they better hope Melo’s sticking with the idea of signing there as a free agent, but I honestly dnt see Melo finishing out the season as a Nugget…

  • MikeC.

I don’t want to see the roster gutted to get Melo. He’d also take touches away from Amare. I’d rather see the team build more quality depth. I like the idea of going after Marc Gasol in the offseason. He’s a skilled big who will keep Amare from wearing down playing the 5, and his skill-set keeps him out of Amare’s way. We already have a high-scoring star and a rock-solid PG with great chemistry. We just need depth and a quality big. Melo solves neither of those problems.

  • biged

@Mike… why cant they have both. Melo will be an upgrade anyway you look at it. and as far as taking touches away from Amare, that’s like saying that the Heat’s should’ve never signed Lebron cause he will take touches away from Wade…its doesn’t jusify not getting him. During free agency, Walsh will just tell him to sign for less so that they can sign/or trade for a quality big man that can give them solid play. They already have a bunch of good role players. they aint gonna win nothing this year cause the lakers gonna 3peat…but next year its anybody’s game, and I think they will make some type of big move in the off season.

  • Metrobus

@biged… No disrespect, but why most Laker fans ASSUME that they’ll threepeat this year. I am a Heat fan, but I’m also aware that there are other teams in the L that have true potential to be champions besides these two: Orlando, Boston, San Antonio (which I HATE to death). On the other hand, I’m on the same page as you regarding Melo and the Knicks; I don’t know if many of you share this perception but it seems that these generation of players, well a few of them, are more interested in WINNING than in a LEGACY. The latter will come with time, they just don’r want to be another Chuck, Malone, Stockton or Kemp. Superstars without rings that can prove their worth. Regardless what is his decision, it would be for the sake of his family and his own. In Mexico we have a saying “I am not a gold coin that pleases everybody”, this applies perfectly for this type of situation

Awww flams… SO he’s denying it. Which essentially means ‘Melo is on the Next available flight to Gotham….

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@MikeC – depth off the bench…. imagine if thats what they try and convince Melo to do… ; / If Isaiah was around, thats probably what would be happening……

  • http://slamonline.com biged

@Metro…I just had to throw that in there as a Lakers fan, not super serious about it. My point was that the Knicks GM is being realistic that their chances of winning it all this year is not that great, but if they build on this they can be a top three team next year with Melo and a good center.
