LeBron James: ‘I’ve Accepted This Villain Role’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Early on in his career — even up to this season, actually — people liked to claim that LeBron James didn’t have a killer instinct, that he was too nice. After the public turned on him following “The Decision” this past summer, LBJ had a choice to make: continue being the nice guy, or don the black hat.

There were indications prior to the season that something within LeBron had changed. Now, James says he’s fine with being the bad guy.

In fact, he claims that being a villain suits him just fine (a role he relished playing last night in Portland during an incredibly dominant performance.)

The Palm Beach Post reports:

James not only scored 44 points, including seven in overtime of a 107-100 win against Portland, but also guarded center Marcus Camby during the overtime. And he did so, even while enduring the usual hostility that always greets him on the road.

“I’ve grown accustomed to it,” James said. “I enjoy it.” Early in the season, he said it was harder to deal with the booing “when you’re not as comfortable as you want to be. But right now, we’re very comfortable together. I’m very comfortable. And I’ve kind of accepted this villain role everyone has placed on me. I’m OK with it. I accept it.”

Miami has won 21 of their last 22 games, including an amazing 13 straight Ws on the road.

It might be time for enemy crowds to switch up their strategy, because the current one of lustily booing ‘Bron ‘Bron and the “Heatles” just isn’t working. Your boos and taunts are evidently only making them stronger.

why are people debating about rondo vs rose in this article.

  • ClydeSays

You can’t compare Rose to Rondo. A better comparison for Rose is CPaul or DWilliams. Rondo is a passer and playmaker (and defender and rebounder) above everything else.

Would Billups in Miami really improve the team that much?
I know Billups is still better than any p[oint guard on the Heat’s roster, but in my mind I see fast breaks with Bron and Wade ending in pull up threes by Billups. That is scary. Plus, Billups isn’t as good on defense anymore.
I don’t know. I like his shooting and intelligence. Not so sure about shot selection.

Gotta say that i’m glad to see Lebron getting more comfy with being booed. but i gotta reiterate somthin that DrLefty and MrRLW said earlier which is taht essentially Bron had no choice but to accept the black hat. HE was being booed even when he didn’t seem to relish the villain role, and he seemed befuddled by it at first. Dude’s basically a narcisisstic egomaniac at heart, but that doesn’t detract from his abilities on the court which are without parallel in today’s league. so can’t we ALL start to appreciate him for what he does on the court?

  • http://gmail z

also the daily drose vs rondo debate is really pointless by now fellas. You’ve already laid out all your valid arguments both ways, now we need to just appreciate the great basketball that both play nightly. It’s a contrast of two great, devestating styles, one a scorer the other a consummate team player. Sounds kinda like a certain rivalry at the center position during the 1960′s no? and that was a golden age for the center position. I daresay we may be entering the golden age of the pg. Let’s just enjoy it, and save the daily debates for the offseason when we’re desperate for stuff to talk about…

haha i was thinking the exact same thing allen. But i really do see him signing with Miami if he gets traded and bought out. Its just too obvious IMO

  • JTaylor21

Enigmatic, I love watching DRose but are you really reaching into the college bag just to prove that Rose’s a better PG than Rondo? I much rather have Mia go after GOden than Billups at this point because GO on this heat squad would make them damn near unbeatable while Billups would only help them a little becuase it’s not like Mia is in dire need of a old non-defensive shot-jacking PG. GO on the other hand doesn’t need the ball to be effective, he would just protect the rim and snatch up every rebound in his vicinity.

Allen brings to light the billups conundrum: he is praised for having a high bball iq, yet, he has horrible shot selection. People kill jr smith for low ball iq and taking bad shots. But, from what ive observed, jr takes better shots than billups.

  • http://valleyofthesuns.com/2011/01/07/amare-stoudemire-same-player-advanced-stats/ nbk

Portland will resign Greg Oden, as crazy as that sounds. They are also not willing to admit Roy is done as a All Star SG, which is why they are going to trade Andre Miller.

  • bashmo

Lebron’s a beast and yesterday’s game solidified that for any non believers. I am not a serious Lebron fan but its time to accept the fact. Miami is looking incredible right now, and whether or not they can deliever in the playoffs has to be seen. I think they’ll do well. I promise you one thing though: They’ll finish with the best record in the league.

  • T-Money

Allen: I see you. On one hand, Billups is about a bajillion times better than Rio and Carlos. But he WILL pull up with an open Wade or Bron flying down the wing and take the big shot at the end (which hasn’t been a great thing lately). Worst of it, Bron and Wade would respect the ring and the experience and not force him to give it up. Could get messy. Maybe I’m overanalyzing things.

Z has a point. The more I think about it, the more I realize I’m being a hypocrite.
I’m always one of first, whenever there’s a Kobe vs. LeBron debate on here, to say “they’re both great. move on.”
But I’m also one of the first to jump into a Rose vs. Rondo debate.
Probably cause Rose is from my team.
I’ma try and chill though and not get involved in these Rose vs. Rondo debates from now on…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    You won’t succeed.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Most likely not.

Let’s start some new versus debates to help ease the withdrawl pains: Ronnie Turiaf>Glen Davis for most annoying cheerleading teammate.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

How about…. Rudy Gay vs Joe Johnson! Go!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    @Diesel – Glen Davis.
@Jukai – You talking about who’s the better player or who’s more deserving of their undeserved contracts?
Tyrone Hill vs. Popeye Jones for ugliest NBA player in recent history?

  • http://gmail z

Whoa ugh yesterday it was YOU who didn’t wanna talk about wilt. What makes you think he couldn’t just outta curiosity?

  • http://gmail z

Btw all you cats who argue old school players couldn’t dominate today need to bear in mind that those old boys were stronger in SOME aspects of the game than contemporary players. Who are we to say what chamberlain couldn’t do in todays game? Leave that to guys who actually saw him in his prime, and have lived long enough to witness the changes in the game that have taken place. Respect your predesessors.

man I wish people hated on vc and t-mac back in the day. fuel their motivation. especialy vc I’ve only seen his inner bad man a few times.

  • bill breedley

everybody gets hyped up every year when lebron starts playing great at some point during the regular season. his team is called the team to beat etc. but come playoffs where epic fail typically occurs, excuses will again come up. prediction, lack of bench support, bosh is no superstar, wade not giving enough. celts or magic will provide the reality check that this team is poorly built. three more months or so!!! cant wait

    Booooooooooo.

  • D dot Wesley

This dude is weak as a man! My reason for saying this is because if you are a good guy, you are a good guy whether there is adversity or not. If you are a bad guy, you’re a bad guy. You don’t let other peoples emotions dictate who you are as a man. “IF YOUR HOUSE IS BUILT ON SAND, WHEN THE STORM COMES YOUR HOUSE WILL FALL!” (MATTHEW 7:24-27)(LOOK IT UP)

  • feez22

I just can’t help but bring this up. Remember last yrs playoffs? yes lebron played relatively bad vs. boston but jesus christ he absolutely manhandled the bulls. they also booed him like no tomorrow and what did he do? 31ppg on 50+ percent shooting from the field and the 3? lebron is a bulls killer. just like he is a blazers killer. He matches up well with the bulls. Should be a great game rose will go bonkers. but at the end of the day… wade/bron will be too much. and god forbid a bosh sighting (in all seriousness bosh has played really well for the past month and a half not 100 million dollars good but consistent nonetheless). I expect the heat to win this. wade playing at home v. brewer/bogans combo is going to be harsh for the bulls. The bulls already know what booing lebron entails (again, last yrs playoffs) and if bosh decides to show up for yet again another PF battle with an elite on the other side than bulls won’t win. 1 things for sure… stacy king’s gonna be going bonkers.

    me too

  • BALLER 4 LIFE

Lets cut the crap about Lebron folding in the Playoffs- These are his playoff averages
29.3 8.4 7.3- Doesn’t look like folding to me- Now I understand that it’s not just about how much you score but WHEN YOU SCORE!!- But even he can’t win it all on his own. Remember how he beat Detroit in 07 in the semis almost single handidly when he scored 25 points straight but was unable to sustain that through the finals.

Game 5 against Boston was an exception and not all his fault- What about game 3 when he detroyed them almost by himself- What did his teamates do?- Nothing!! Kobe’s teamamtes won game 7 in last years finals not Kobe. LeBron could not have a bad game and still win. – His point was he needed more help. And judging by Cleavland’s record now HE WAS ABSOLUTLEY RIGHT- THESE GUYS MAY NOT WIN 20 GAMES THAT’S A 40 GAME DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!-

  • Cool Dude

I’ve hated Lebron for the longest time thinking he was an overspoiled baby. Seeing him play the heel role so flawlessly during the Portland game has changed my viewpoint. We need more edge during today’s soft nba, and lebron is providing it.

  • Da Holy Karron

CHILLIN’ LIKE A VILLAIN hands down the best comment on this thread.. Clearly da best hahaha.

  • Fboy

The heat have the best center in the league with Erik Dampier..they need 2 use him more..especially if they wanna beat the celtics

  • whyeo

in my eyes, Queen james has always been the villian.

    right from the beginning.
