Nate Robinson on Dunk Contest: ‘They Set it Up For Blake to Win’

NBA.com’s Steve Aschburner reports: “Clippers forward Blake Griffin, who has turned the first half of the 2010-11 season into one big commerical for the dunkathon at Staples Center next month, is Robinson’s pick. Rather cynically, in fact. ‘Of course. They set it up like that. They set it up for Blake to win it like that,’ Robinson said before the Boston Celtics faced the Chicago Bulls Saturday night at United Center. B-b-but why would the almighty ‘they’ do that? Because it’s in L.A.? Because Griffin is the likely Rookie of the Year? Because he finally has given the Clippers a budding star with national and global marketing appeal? ‘Everything. It’s all set up,’ said the Celtics’ guard, who ‘retired’ from the dunk contest after winning in Dallas last February. ‘But we’ll see. I’m not saying he can’t dunk, because he can. Though we’ll see how it goes. Hopefully the guys that are in there with him will give him some competition and put on a show. Because that’s all it’s for — it’s a show. That’s the whole meaning of the dunk contest.’”

Haha. Look who’s talking, Nate won 3 times without ever really deserving it.

  • Fred

    I’m agree with you EJ

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

He does have a point though… at the moment it seems we have Blake Griffin from CLIPShow, Josh Mcwhite-y-McRoberts from Indiana and Brandon Jennings who gets a nod because he dunks it a fast breaks…with two hands…softly. NONE of these guys have a repetoire of flash DUNK COMP moves that would make you think your looking at the best dunkers in the league. Next thing you know they’ll have Samuel Dalmbert in the 3pt shooting competition and Robin Lopez in the skills challenge?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!
    !??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

It’s the shannon brown fiasco dressed up as lamb.

  • Young C

BJ does have some ups. He’s the only challenge to Blake. I dont know why Ibaka and McGee was selected anyway. Where’s LeBron?

  • mikee1680

How did Nate Robinson win those dunk contests? Took him like 20 tries to get his final dunk.

  • http://NBA.com EJ

BJ has ups. He can eastbay, and McGee is alright. Just cause he failed that FT dunk and ran over James Jones doesn’t mean he sucks. Nick Young should’ve got in the contest instead of Ibaka. I have only seen 1 putback dunk by him. Nick could actually beat Blake if it wasn’t a fan vote.

  • kudos

Everyone who people want to see enter, are scared (LEBRON). Or they just have proved how much they’ suck at dunk contests (Nate Robinson). At least lil Nate is not going to be in it. He makes it freakin unwatchable.

  • Tommy

Mc Gee is in there becaue everyone wants to see him fail at another try of the ft-line dunk xD, Jennings is in there because he really has something to show i think, Ibaka is there for no good reason ^^ and blake is there to win it and make d.stern happy that he has a ne fan favourite

  • Do Work

i guess someone who never deserved to win any dunk contests would know best right?

  • Kevin Wilson

I don’t remember Nate chastising Dwight Howard for allowing himself to be a Nate Robinson prop, or chastising judges who didn’t count it against him that he needed numerous attempts to throw down a specific dunk.

  • http://nba.com/bulls The Babe

Y’all are sleeping on Ibaka, dude has up up and aways

  • barnabusb

I hope they don’t bring out gimmicks like capes and phone booths and birthday candles and junk. Just bring the dunks and try to tear down the rim. That’s what fans want to see. That’s why Vince’s dunk contest is one of the best ever — he just came out and did his thing without screwing around.

  • Ryan

    Little man with big opinions

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Nate robbed Iguodala, he beat a bunch of chumps last year and Dwight should’ve beat him, and now he’s acting like Blake isn’t that good so he needs inferior competition to win it? GTFOH. Enter yourself Nate, you’ll be destroyed by the beast they call Blake.

  • Da Holy Karron

The dunk contest has been a joke 4 yrs I hate to say this but its tru

  • james

@dacre not sayin jennings is gonna win but you might wanna watch some of his high school highlights before you make a comment sayin he only dunks with two hands on a fast break

  • http://slamonline.com kobehater

nate should enter himself, BG is the best dunker in the leage. besides LBJ plus
    kobe sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://NBA.com EJ

BTW watch out for that amateur dunk contest, it’s gonna be tight if TDub, Jusfly and K(enny)D(obbs) get in there.

  • slamfan4life

D.Rose woulda been better than mr.jennings

  • KING

@slamfan u ain’t ever seen brandon jennings in high school? He gots bunnies

  • @Nupedavinci

Nate can talk? What dunks has he done in a game or even over someone? None!!! He makes me sick….

  • MikeC.

Isn’t Jennings out with a broken foot? I guess he could use his crutches as a prop.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Coney Islander

Nate’s mad because we don’t have a half-hour to see him make a dunk!

  • Hambone

i would take anyone from the raptors than mc gee your too tall to be in a dunk comp

  • Omar

Nate deserved the one last year but that’s it. Iggy should have won the first one and D12 should have won the other one.

  • Yesse

Well, Nate should know or did Nate want to get a 4th win and Nba didn’t let him to?

  • 2k Champ

I blame Kenny smith for creating this monster

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Blake is def. the fan favorite going in, I think the contest should offer a prize (a car or $ for charity of the winners choice) That way we can see some of the Lebrons, and Durants enter.

  • BostonBaller

It’s his opinion (and valid) but he was handed a trophy or 2 himself. lol. The lil fella can jump though. In game dunkers don’t always translate to good dunk contestants…Blake is probably an exception to that…

  • http://www.yougotdunkedon.com LilKDub503

Listen…We should not even be talking about Nate. Hopefully you guys aren’t forgetting about Blake in the McDonald’s Dunk Contest. He can do some things. As can BJ, he can go through his legs off the bounce, but he’s smart and doesn’t wear out his legs during games. McGee has some ups, as does Ibaka, but I can’t help but think there are better dunkers out there. Like DeMar Derozan.

  • Pugz

yeah nate blows… idk why hes talking he never should’ve won.

  • Mike from Spain

Nate knows what he’s talking about… he’s been there

  • Mike from Spain

If I hadn’t read the rest of the ish Nate said, I’d have thought that he means it is unavoidable that Blake wins… they set up the contest only for him to win it, no real competition there

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought it was a set up to

  • Blaspemy

He was going win regardless of his opponents. I firmly believe he is going to put on a great show. I know this because I saw it in a vision. Well it wasn’t a vision more as I saw his top ten career dunks.

  • D-Block

What Nate said is true. Of course everyone is going to bash Nate because of how he’s underwhelmed us in previous dunk contests. If Kobe had said the same thing, everyone on here (except kobehater) would simply nod their heads or hate on LeBron for “backing down”. If McGee was five to six inches shorter he might have a chance (although I wouldn’t mind seeing Nick Young in it instead as someone already mentioned), McRoberts brings no “wow” factor, and Ibaka supposedly has hops…it’s just that nobody in the NBA has seen them yet. Somebody sign James White and The Air Up There to a ten day contracts and put them in it!!!!! B-Jennings has boosties, but C’MON SON!!! You’ve got more important things to worry about, like coming back from that injury!

  • barnabusb

I want to know where this whole “the dunk contest tires out your legs” schtick came from. I heard it from LeBron and a few other guys. Since when did dunking the ball 6 or 7 times lessen your career? Lame.

  • S-Mills

Everything Blake Griffin is a set up. NBA on facebook and twitter drops so many updates about him its just down right annoying.

  • D-Block

    Lol @S-Mills…oh you mad?

  • Clos1881

He makes a great point serge? Javelle who the hell wanna see them?

  • 3John3

What i don’t get is that way does Blake always set evry thing up. You got it give it to Nate.

  • Groves

Blake, LeBron, Josh Smith, Dwight Howard, James White, Gerald Green, Gerald Wallace, Derrick Rose, Andre Iggodala, Jason Richardson… These are Real Dunk Contest Candidates

  • Groves

    ^ &Amare Stoudemire?

  • Groves

    ^ +Demar DeRozan

  • irondan21

    1. Shut up Nate You have achieved more than you deserve (wining dunk contest, playing for Celtics, getting drafted)
    2. Javale? No!
    3. Lebron we put up with ur *&^# for too long get ur arse in that contest

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Yeah, Gerald Wallace was awesome last year – the dunks he did before he was eliminated _I_ can do. And Nate doesn’t dunk in game? Nupe, you’re a damn fool. And BJ can eastbay? Name a dunk contestant from the last eleven years who _can’t_ eastbay! Of course this a gift wrapped package for Blake!

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Hey, irondan21 – seeing as you don’t play for the Celtics, haven’t won a dunk contest and didn’t get drafted, I’d say you’re likewise talking well above your own standards of achievement.

  • http://writethefuture.tumblr.com Chris Wise

Look for nate to get assassinated sometime soon..

He’s spitting in “their” face after he got gifted those three chips.

And now outing “them.” You should know better than to talk.

  • fariz

i just dont get it with u guys bashin nate…….he’s 5’9 and yet he dunks like he was 6’6………..have some respect on that dude……he won it 3 times….and surely not by pure luck……..

  • http://? vlad

I think they should make all of the dunk contesters compete in a 3 point contest and all of the 3 pt shooters dunk :) then i maybe actually watch it .

  • Mike from Spain

@fariz, no , he did not win it by pure luck, it was set up. That’s how he knows

  • Mamba

LeBron too scared to lose thats why he has never been in the dunk contest in addition to he doesn’t have any sweet dunks. Hw does the same lame dunks all the time.

  • Mamba

As for Nate he did some nice dunks, but the year he missed like 30 dunks in a row he definitely shouldn’t have won. They robbed AI because when he caught the ball off the back of the backboard and dunked it, that should have been end of story.

Oh and again LBJ a puss thats why he not in the dunk contest. He always say he going to do it then when theres someone he not sure he can beat he back out like a sucka, kinda like how he left Clev, lol

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

You have got to be kidding me. LeBron im sure doesnt care about the dunk contest. He would have done it long time ago.

Tell me you have never said to someone “yea yea” just so they leave you alone. LOL i know i have.

  • Stepfan

You might as well put Blake Griffins name on the trophy. He has yet to lose a dunk contest since he been playing ball. Javale Mcgee is my dark horse just because he a Wizard. I’m bias sorry. lol Why is Brandon Jennings in this? Plus he’s still injured, and my man Serge Ibaka is a game dunker. After this one let this be the final one. Discontinue this event. The dunk contest is dead.

  • unrel

since stars don’t join the contest anymore.. then need to do something and bring some street cats in.. or some and-1 heads in the contest.. have them team up with an NBA player.. and average the scores.. i’m visioning NBA JAM double dunks.. in regards to Nate.. he’s right.. that blake was set up to win.. but not to help the clippers.. why would the nba want to help them out?..

  • http://google c_cantrell

completly set up..its going to be so damn funny if bjennings wins lol

  • torobravo

Yep it must be some big conspiracy. Of course they want BG in the contest….he’s a beast and will draw a big crowd regardless of the competition. But it makes no sense to “set it up” for BG to win. As much as I respect Nate and what he can do, that’s plain wrong.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Clyde

I can see where he’s coming from, it’s probably fair to say Griffin is heavily favored by most to win it vs that “competition”. On the other hand, if it doesn’t take Blake 13 tries to throw down his dunk, then little Nate Rob has to shut his hole. :)

  • maria

can u spell H.A.T.E.R, he set it up for himself. the leauge didnt anticipate him missing his rookie year and then coming in and taking the L by storm. he has worked hard, and it just so happens to be tht the dunk contest is in his city. green is not a good look 4 u nate, tht is green wit envy~

  • Charles

Here we go again… Little man syndrome. Demar got this one.

  • Nomasiac

How come J.R. Smith never get’s no shout??
It’s good that Lebron never enters, his dunks never look all that visually!

  • curtis

i hope he was just kiddin around cause his win was set up as well

  • Darshan

    you were true Nate…
