OJ Mayo Gets 10-Game Drug Suspension

For testing positive for the over-the-counter supplement DHEA, OJ Mayo will serve a 10-game suspension, beginning this Friday. Per the Memphis Commercial Appeal: “The NBA announced today that Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the league’s anti-drug program. His violation of the program involved a positive test for dehydroepiandrosterone. DHEA is commonly available in health food stores and pharmacies. It is a steroid hormone that acts on the body much like testosterone. [...] ‘I’m extremely disappointed that I’m going to miss the next 10 games, particularly as our team is making a push for the playoffs,’ Mayo said in a statement. ‘I had no idea that the over-the-counter supplement that I took was a substance banned by the NBA. It was an honest mistake, but I take full responsibility for my actions. I apologize to my fans, teammates and the Grizzlies organization for regrettably not doing the necessary research about what supplements I can put in my body.’”

MEMPHIS, TENN. (AP) —The NBA has suspended guard O.J. Mayo(notes) 10 games without pay for violating the league and union’s anti-drug program with a positive test.

The league announced the suspension Thursday for Mayo’s positive test for dedehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Mayo’s suspension will start Friday night when the Grizzlies visit Philadelphia.

Mayo said in a statement released by the team that he is extremely disappointed he will miss 10 games as the Grizzlies are making a push for the playoffs. He blames an over-the-counter supplement for containing a substance banned by the NBA and calls it an “honest mistake.”

wish it was permanent? What kind of comment is that? Anyway: “NBA suspends Memphis guard O.J. Mayo without pay for 10 games after a positive test for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).”

of course it was an honest mistake….What NBA player would ever lie

  • APS

Gosh, one wonders if this’ll ruin his sterling rep with the non-Slam/Dime reading crowd.

Wait, where does it say he took DHEA?

OJ Mayo took roids?! wow, not too sure about his gym ethic or he should be looking like LeBron James!

  • RyanT

Gotta love the ‘I did not know’ excuse. So you got hold of this stuff – or used something that had it in it – and simply hoped it’d be ok? If you’re sincere, then why not get any supplements or whatnot checked out before taking them?

  • LeBron de Con

I didn’t take no roid, so check that ish.

DHEA is an easy drug to take by accident. Go to any ‘health-food’ store and look at natural weight loss pills, energy pills or anything for ED. Not saying Mayo did/not know what he was taking was in violation of the rules, but DHEA is a common drug and would be easy for him to ‘innocently’ take.

Free OJ, I hope Memphis trades him. I tell people all the time he is a poor man’s Kobe, until he can find a team that will use him right and have a coach that understands the game. Any team that is promoting Gay as your best player is awful. BOOK IT!!

  • Omar

Can’t think of a player having a worse year than this dude.

  • PapaBearATL

DHEA seems to be banned by a lot of sports organizations, but it is sold in every health food store, it’s not a steroid, more like a pre-cursor I guess. It’s not like he flew down to Mexico and copped a bunch a roids. The label seems harmless enough, I have some in my supplement cabinet.

  • http://www.collegemixes.com Chill

DHEA is nothing to trip about. A lot of people take it because its GOOD for you.

Ouch… More playing time for Zawveeay, I guess..?

@Omar yeah, feel bad for the kid…hopefully he can get everything straightened out and back on court…he has been having a tough go of things

  • Towelie

I thought this article would be about OJ Mayo doing purple dank or purple drank…This article disappointed me.

come to chicago…you will learn how to play D.!

  • RobbieJay

i didnt know what the drug was until i later looked it up

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

Too bad it wasn’t performance enhancing, maybe Xavier Henry would get less of your minutes.

  • Red Star

Fixing the refereeing problem is way more important than policing for banned substances. If this stuff really helped everyone would be doing it.
    That’s my two cents!

  • Joe

Its funny how he was taking performance enhancing drugs and still is on the worst cold spell of his life, i mean 0 for 4 for 0 points thats probably never happened in his life before
