Post Up: Put Your Hands Up

Knicks shock the Spurs, while the Heat keep cruising.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

New York 128, San Antonio 115

The Spurs, in the opening night of a three-game road trip, seemed like they might’ve spent a little too much time thinking about their matchup with Boston (tonight) and not enough on the Knicks, who were up first. New York came out firing hot, scoring 72 first-half points and finishing with a 54.9 percent shooting rate. For what it’s worth, San Antonio put up tons of points as well, but the Knicks kept a narrow lead for the majority of the 48 minutes and created some separation in the final stretch. Oddly, with about three minutes remaining and only a 10-or-so point differential, Coach Popovich took out all of his starters, either as a punishment for their weak effort or an attempt to save some energy for tonight’s game. The Knicks were led by the (suddenly) usual three dudes: Wilson Chandler (31 points, 9 rebounds), Amar’e Stoudemire (28 points, 9 rebounds) and Raymond Felton (28 points, 7 assists). They’ll have some solid momentum as they begin a road trip in Phoenix on Friday, and, well, let’s just say I wouldn’t want to be the Celtics right about now. Something tells me the Spurs are coming out real, real serious tonight.

Miami 101, Milwaukee 89

Here’s an interesting element to the way the Heat play: For long stretches of time, they often look like an incredibly average basketball team. You watch a few quarters of this, and you think, Man, with a solid strategy and some great shooting, anyone can beat these guys. Then they turn it on. No group can go on a quick scoring run like these guys can. Not a one. And that’s exactly what they did in the fourth quarter last night, negating three mediocre quarters and earning an easy victory. The W marks 19 of 20 for the Heat, who were led by Dwyane Wade and his 34 points.

Chicago 111, Toronto 91

As much as Orlando has been winning as of late (six in a row), they still can’t crack the top 3 in the East—and the Bulls are to blame. Chicago has now won five straight (and 14 of 16), and the Raptors just couldn’t keep up against the red hot home team. Luol Deng dropped 24, and six Bulls scored in double figures during the victory.

Memphis 110, Oklahoma City 105

Don’t really know what’s going on here. The Thunder haven’t really looked bad—they’ve won plenty and are among the top teams in the West (they’re in fifth as I write this)—but it’s hard to watch them on a nightly basis, or look at a couple of the teams they’re behind in the standings, and not think, You know, they could, or should, be better. I won’t speculate as to what exactly the issue is or where the blame should go—maybe you guys have some thoughts—but I’ll definitely be paying attention moving forward. This one was pretty close, but the Grizzlies held the Thunder off in the final minutes, getting huge nights from Zach Randolph (31 points, 16 boards) and Rudy Gay (27 points).

Dallas 84, Portland 81

A slightly different story than that Spurs-Knicks game here. In a defensive struggle, the Mavs edged the Blazers and looked as though they found themselves a solid Caron Butler replacement, too. Deshawn Stevenson, that is, who scored 18. Dallas hosts the Thunder tomorrow night in what should be a good one.

Atlanta 108, Sacramento 102

The Hawks took a 14-point lead into halftime, and though the Kings threatened in the final minutes—some Tyreke Evans buckets held with that—Atlanta hung on for the win. Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson combined for a cool 60 spot, while Evans led the Kings with 29. I know they need to do what’s best for Tyreke’s health, but given all of these losses, it’s tough to imagine just how bad Sacramento would be if Evans elects to go with season-ending surgery—which, at this point, seems kind of inevitable.

LA Lakers 108, Detroit 83

The Lakers might not have solved all of their problems just yet, but they did put them on hold for the time being, cruising to an easy victory against a severely less talent Pistons squad. After a back-and-forth first half, LA came out energized and focused, and their opponents just didn’t stand much of a chance. And I’ll end this shindig with a congrats to Mr. Kobe Bryant, who, with 17 points of his own, passed Dominique Wilkins for 10th on the all-time scoring list. Respect.

Actual Stats: Zach Randolph: 31 points, 16 rebounds, 2 steals.

Moment of the Night: Not much went right for the Spurs last night, but they did get a hell of a posterization from DeJuan Blair, who banged on Ronny Turiaf something fierce. Ronny’s frustration led to a chest bump, then a T, but it didn’t help us forget what took place seconds before. Check it:

Don’t be mad, Ronny, you just got smashed on!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

In other Knicks Knews: Landry Fields once again takes the NBA Rookie of the Month honors for the Eastern Conference! I told you that Knicks neophyte is flirting with ROY, but the most important thing to Landry Fields, is the Knicks are winning and grinning! Great win last night! Go Knicks!

  • Mike from Spain

Maybe the question is not what’s wrong with OKC, but what is right with Memphis. They won a blow up victory against the Lakers not long ago, they are on to something

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I’m sure Coach Pop isn’t getting all tingly over that Blair dunk…due to the fact the Spurs just got served an L at THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Anon e Mouse

Great dunk but even greater scalp for the Knicks so I’ll take Turiaf getting stuffed on any day. Keep contending thise shots and ignore the posters! A couple more of these types of wins will do the team a world of good. Oh yeah…Go Knicks!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I think the Knicks will have this ability all season, to beat teams that are better than them overall, depending on the night. They caused the Spurs problems because the Spurs don’t really have the horses to win games in the 120 point range. It’s pretty simple actually. D’Antoni’s Suns teams did the same thing. I’ll say this, I despise the Knicks (not this particular group of guys though)and it’s nice to see them relevant again. It’s good for the league to have good teams go into the Garden and get a good game instead of embarrassing losses for the home squad.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

    Two things.
    1. When is the new Slam coming out? I can’t wait any longer :P 2. No article on the Slam Dunk Contest? It will be Blake Griffin, Javale McGee, Brandon Jennings, Serge Ibaka according to numerous sites, including the LA Times. It’s supposed to be announced tommorow night.

    ^eboy..
    true that

  • T-Money

They still won’t get out of the first round. And I don’t think they’ll even be that competitive in that first round.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

“The New York Knicks kicked our ass,” Popovich said after the Knicks beat the team with the best record in the NBA 128-115. “I just know that they’re a very good basketball team,” Popovich said. “They’re not a dangerous team; they’re a good team, and there’s a big difference. A lot of teams can be dangerous on a night. But they’re sound. They’re playing their roles, they’re playing together, they’re communicating, and the physicality was impressive. The 128 points were the most San Antonio has allowed in regulation in the Tim Duncan era. “They made us play their game instead of us making them play our game,” Duncan said.

  • Mvp23100

    @T-Money
I agree all hype not enough talent respect to them for finding ways to win though

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Uhm, Orange, they tried that sh*t with the Heat twice too and you saw how that worked out. Are they going to roll over the Celtics in a 7 game series? Or the Heat? Or the Magic? They would probably struggle in a series with the Bulls too. They still have work to do and spots to fill. They’re getting there, but don’t let last nights win overshadow their direct competition in the East. I know it’s been awhile for Knicks fans.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Coach Pop is a mentally strong truth teller. Some folks just can’t handle the truth, so they make excuses, and call things flukes. smh

  • monkeyball

The problem this season is that it’s very hard to really gauge which teams are superior, really. The reason, from what I can see, is that there are too many truly awful teams playing in the League this year. Sure, the Lakers beat the Pistons, but does that tell us anything about their team-chemistry problems? No. The Pistons just suck. I saw the Bulls beat the Sixers by 45 the other night. Does that really tell me anything about the Bulls? Not really.
If the good teams know that they can pad their records with easy wins, it makes sense that they won’t worry about losing to an above-average team (like the Spurs to the Knicks). And if San Antonio loses to Boston tonight? They still have the best record in the L.
I remember other years like this, in the mid-to-late 90′s for example, right after Toronto and Vancouver came into the L. It sucks, and takes away from a great season otherwise.
It also doesn’t bode well for the players in the current contract agreement dispute.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I can’t wait to see the Celts/Spurs game tonight. Should be a great one.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

If Chicago can find an upgrade at the SG positon then all teams not named Boston in the East are in trouble.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

ORANGE – I love how you’re missing on these threads the past week when New York was losing. One damn win and your back to you’re annoying a$$ winning and grinning sh*t. If you’re gonna talk that junk after a win, take the heat after a loss.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

The Bulls had TWO really good SG’s in the past couple of seasons. One’s in Detroit now and the other’s in Milwaukee.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

You know, during their heyday, the Bulls would often look “normal” for stretches. Then, typically in the third quarter, they would “release the dobermans” crush the other teams resistance, and basically get a comfortable win. If it was a bad team, they would often blow them out with that run. They Heat aren’t as good as those Bulls’ teams yet, but they seem to employ the same strategy.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I’m talking about this years team that is tied for the second seed in the East and has not got the credit they deserve because of sideshows in the Southeast.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Soulja boy (DeShawn) has been contributing for the Mavs this season, great job. Hope Dirk’s knee isn’t being downplayed

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

    And Salmons sucks BTW.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I’m surprised at how well the Bulls are playing without Noah. Maybe they should have made that Melo deal after all…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Salmons sucks? Are you friggin’ serious? Dude has really good offensive skill. He’s not top 5 in the league but the dude holds his own against the elite. Also, when you say “tied” for the second seed in the East are you talking about some unseen rule the NBA employs that allows teams with less wins and more losses to stand over another division leader. I’ve never seen that before.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Co-sing Allen.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/2011 Diesel

Ben Gorden sucks too. There’s a reason casual viewers of Bulls games liked him but true Bull sfans hated him. The dude was a gunner that was just out to get his. He didn’t play any D, he stalled the offense, he took the ball out of DRose’s hands, and he was undersized. Worst of all, he wanted $11 mil a year. Bulls were right to let him go. They were right to let Solmons go too. They messed up letting Kirk go.

  • JTaylor21

The Knicks ain’t winning ish in the playoffs until they decide to play defense. This is not the WC, where few teams play any D at all which allowed a team like the PHX suns to get to the WCF. This is the east where Bos, Orl, Mia and Chi know that defense first is the key in the playoffs. When your best player almost gives up as many points as he scores, you know you’re in deep trouble.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I’m only repeating facts. Salmons has been awful this season and played awful which led to his trade last year from Chi.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Has anyone noticed that the Spurs are not a really good defensive team like in the past? They have been winning with offense all year. I really don’t seem them staying this hot for the whole season especially with Duncan having a typical Duncan season. He has struggled in several games.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/2011 Diesel

It helps that the Bulls are playing a bunch of sub .500 teams. They’ll need Noah if they want to compete against the good teams with huge front lines.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@AllenP, the Bulls started off with a tough schedule, including the annual circus road trip, and now they have some easy games. Any bulls fan realizes that if there ever were a time for Noah, or any player for that matter, to miss time it would be now. Playing well with Noah doesn’t mean in ANY WAY that Melo would work out. I think it would but this ain’t proof.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

    *with=without Noah

  • MusketeerX

The truth is that the Knicks just match up well with the Spurs, who lack offensive size. The reason the Knicks won last night was not because they put up 129 points, but because they equaled the Spurs on boards, +1. The reason why the Knicks lost to Miami (twice), Boston, and Orlando, is because they got outrebound on the boards.

I’m telling you now. If you put Anderson Varajao on this Knicks team, with his defense and ability to get boards, and hustle, the Knicks would be one of the best teams in the NBA right now.

  • add

    didnt see that one comin

  • T-Money

Honest question: why is KD considered to have a “killer instinct” or “clutch genes”? What’s on his track record? Everytime I watch him at the end of games, he jacks up a wild 28 footer.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

T-Money, the quick answer: WC Turkey 2010.

  • JTaylor21

Sideshow Bob is not going to cure the Knicks defensive woes. Last nights game vs the Knicks wasn’t the kind of game TD would play well in because it was a up and down fast paced game. People need to stop acting like TD is done already, he changed up his game for the good of the team and they have the best record in the L because of that. Now if the folks down in LA can convince the notorious h.o.g to do the same, LA would be that much better also but we all know that will never happen.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I agree that the Bulls schedule has been favorable, but since I’ve said that you hvae to play the schedule you have when the same issue has been raised for Miami, it would be hypocritical for me to downplay the Bulls’ success for that reason.
Besides, as we’ve seen with the Lakers, it’s quite easy to lose to horrible teams even if you have a bunch of talent.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Yeah, Fiba WC 2010, the more important the games got, the better KD got, he was so sick, people were seriously including him in the Kobe, Bron group. Obviously, those talks have cooled of now, but KD is still super smooth and the sky is the limit for him. Thinking about it, the league really has a nice trio of young players in Rose, Griffin, KD.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@AllenP, that’s why getting Melo (bunch of talent) doesn’t neccesarily get the Bulls a title. I like this Bulls team (not assuming they’re getting a titlle people, cool down) with Drose at the helm, Boozer, Deng, Noah as sidekicks and Thibodeau the coach. I think the Bulls organization likes this team too :P

  • JTaylor21

I didn’t know that irrelevant WC games counted as regular and post-season NBA games, when did that happen? KD is so overrated it’s not even funny. Apart from scoring, what else is he great at? He’s not a great rebound for someone his size, he still struggles defensively, he can’t create good looks for his teammates, his handles is shaky around physical defenders, and he panics during crunchtime, jacking up deep 30fts. I mean what’s all the hype for and weren’t there people that said dude could easily drop 33/10/50/40/90 this year. To be honest, Westbrook is OKC’s most importanat and best all-around player.

  • Double j

Ronny Turiaf = The Skinny Eddy Curry

  • Stepfan

The problem with the Thunder is that they refuse to play any type of D like they did last year. They are no longer flying under the radar, and the every team in the NBA scouting reporting is to attcak the paint since they dont have a true big man. (Sorry Serge.) But for some reason every time Jeff Green doesnt have a good game they lose. KD and Westbrook bring it every night, but if Jeff doesnt they dont have a chance. I wish memphis would play like this every night. There is no reason why they shouldnt make the playoffs. (I use both of these teams on 2k11.)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Durant is better than Westbrook. Westbrook makes just as many bad decisions, has just as many if not more holes in his game, and has the added benefit of not having to carry the burden of being the “man” night in and night out. Let’s kill that ridiculous talk about Westbrook being better.
The truth is, fans have unrealistic expectations for Durant after watching him dominate inferior individual competition in Turkey.
Nobody in Turkey could match Durant’s size and athletic ability, let alone his skill. In the NBA, he sees players regularly who are just as big and athletic, and it negates how effective his skill can be. Plus, his biggest asset is his soft touch, and when his jumper’s not falling, he’s still not at the level where he can dominate a game.
Plus, as Stepfan said, the Thunder don’t play defense and rebound like they should, and Scott Brooks can be unimaginative on offense. (Damn, how many times are we going to end games on a Durant iso on the wing, or a 1/3 pick and pop?)
Dude is still nice, he’s just not on LeBron’s level like some people thought. Mistakes happen.

  • JTaylor21

No one said that Westbrook was the better player just the better all-around player. Dude is probably the best rebounding PG not named Jkidd or CP, he’s a very good defender, and is also a very good passer. Those are areas of the game that KD struggles in, so why do some people see it as ludacris to say that Russ’s the better all-around player. Didn’t OKC go into Bos and win vs a healthy celtic team without their “best” player?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Jtaylor, first you diss KD, but you don’t have the guts to say Russ is THE best player in OKC, oh no, he’s the best all-around and most important player, just say he’s the best. KD will be one of the best in the league. Leading the league in scoring at 21 is nothing right? Looks easy to me. Finishing 2nd in MVP voting at 21. Easy. Leading a B-Team, that alot of people thought would lose to a title. Playing the turkish squad in Turkey in the Final game and dominate. Easy. Having 29 games of 25+ points in a row easy, the only player who had more was Mike with 40. The rest of the league never did it. Don’t hate on him. He’s 22. He’s gifted. He will be great.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

How can you be the better all-around player, and be the better player? Don’t we judge “better” on all-around play? You could have said Westbrook was more versatile, but you can’t say he’s “better all-around” and expect that not to be taken as you saying he’s just better.
Besides, Westbrook is turnover prone, he still struggles to control temp, his offensive aresenal is limited, he takes WAY too many long jumpers, and he gambles a lot on defense.
His passing is not on an elite level, despite his assist total.
I saw that Boston game, in crunch time, the game degenerated into Westbrook jacking up contested jumpers off the pick and roll because he couldn’t create a quality shot for himself or his teammates against the the full attention of Boston’s defense. I think he finished with like 25 or 28 points on nearly as many shots. It was a nice win, but more the result of Boston sleeping, than Westbrook killing the entire game.
Simply put, Durant’s basketball IQ is higher than Westbrook’s, his burden is heavier, and he’s done an admirable job of carrying it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

“No one said that Westbrook was the better player just the better all-around player.” THat is a better player, and no he isn’t.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Didn’t we have this conversation about Russel Westbrook and Derrick Rose? People started actin like Russel was the best player in the league after that Boston game, its getting taken out of proportion with this he’s better then Durant bs.

  • Stepfan

To be honest, I got caught up in the all media hype after the Thunder took LA to seven games in the first round of the playoffs. (and maybe the Thunder did too). The thing is this team hasnt improved from last year. And I hate to sound like a broken record but they don’t play D at all compared to last year. Their fast break points compared to last year have went down since they dont get stops like they use to. KD and that team are the future of the NBA that’s if they can find a post pressence and keep the core of KD, Westbrook, Jeff Green, and James “Old man game” Harden together.
