Reports: Chauncey Billups Doesn’t Want to Play for Nets

Chris Sheridan has the 411: “Chauncey Billups does not want to be a member of the New Jersey Nets if they are able to acquire Carmelo Anthony. Billups made it known Saturday to the Denver Nuggets, his agent said. ‘If he is traded, he’d want to be bought out to he could survey the landscape and re-evaluate what he wants to do going forward,’ agent Andy Miller told ESPN.com in the wake of numerous reports the Nets had engaged the Pistons in three-way trade talks with the aim of bringing Anthony, Billups and Richard Hamilton to New Jersey. As reported by ESPN.com’s Marc Stein, the talks between Denver, New Jersey and Detroit have not progressed to the point where anything is close to being finished, and ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard has reported that the deal, as currently constructed, is not amenable to the Pistons. Nor would it be to Billups. ‘We’ve had numerous conversations with the Nuggets — today was the latest, but we’ve had conversations throughout the entire season — where we’ve made it clear that Chauncey wants to remain a Nugget for the duration of his career, and then after his career is over he wants to move into the front office,’ Miller said.”

Can you blame him? He already has a title and a finals MVP and plays for his hometown team. Which punk-as* “superstar” wants to drag him to another city just so his endoresement dollars won’t suffer? F that. As for the rest of the trade, somewhere between 14-17 players between 3 teams are supposedly involved. Although DET would LOVE to get rid of Hamilton, is giving up a 1st this year worth it? Make it top-7 protected and we probably have a deal. I’m so sick of hearing about Crymelo and his saga to go to another team that he will be unhappy with in 2 years or less.

So because one guy isn’t “loyal”, the franchise will trade another who is? #irony

@ LA Huey, It’s absolutely ass backwards man!

This is pretty messed up. I mean Billups has been the one (w/ karl) tyring to sound out all the talk for the team’s sake, but for Melo and his situation have to bring in Billups like that..Melo should start evaluating hmiself and what he’s doin’. He can’t have it ALL go how he wants it, and it’s going to affect everyone regardless of how he leaves

  • MikeC.

Sounds like Melo to NY would make Billups happy since the Knicks don’t need Billups.

Bruce Bowen had a few years left in him but retired because he didnt want to play for the Bucks.. IMO its a part of the job, and guys should suck it up until they are free agents and can control their own destiny.

^ I dont blame him though, its sad to see guys nearing the end of their career being traded to a rebuilding team. (Nick Anderson to Memphis)

@BossTerry, I’m not being sympathetic towards Billups. I understand its part of the business. I’m just calling out the cats that call out dudes who leave teams via free agency by using the “loyalty” card.

It sucks how superstars can play a team like this. Denver should just send him somewhere crappy for cash and picks or something.

Hamilton and Billups reuniting in New Jersey would be awesome. Throw in Carmelo Anthony… And then you still have Brook Lopez and pretty much any power-forward, and you have a contending starting line-up right there. That is a freakishly good starting 5 and Billups should at least consider it. I understand, though, since Denver is his hometown and he wants a front office job there later on.

@LA- I wasn’t questioning your post, just throwing in my 2 cents..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also, Detroit desperately needs to get rid of at least 2 of their guards or wing players. Their logjam at the 1-3 position is ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

    I feel you, Boss

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I just heard on NBA tv that this deal is close, and could involve 17 players.. Wow..

  • johnny c

    @Teddy-the-Bear
I live in michigan, and its tough watching pistons games, over half the roster is those 1-3 positions, and nobody can catch fire playing that way. i miss those pistons teams with billups

  • bakers’-dozen

    Melo officially sucks…

  • bakers’-dozen

lol damn this could mess up the whole L’s balance right now peachums

  • bakers’-dozen

dang i like to get it in the butt

  • bakers’-dozen

    that was not me…
But the thing is…I’m watching the Nuggets game right now, and they are half way through the second quarter. Melo hasn’t even ATTEMPTED to grab a rebound, go for a steal, or get an assist yet.
He’s palying selfish, boorish ball because he knows he’s as good as gone…why hustle?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

How much better does this really make jersey? I mean they improve but are they contenders? And with that del they have a lot knit salaries and not realm top.flight talent.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

So if this trade actually happens, does this make the Nuggets JR Smith’s team? shot-jack galore!

  • bashmo

Melo obviously is not doing this for money, seeing how he rejected Denver’s extension offer…he just wants a change of scenery. However Billups ,Hamilton and Melo would be a nice core. Throw in Brook Lopez and some more bench pieces, and New Jersey wouldn’t look half bad. Oh and another thing, Loyalty doesn’t mean nearly as much as it once did obviously.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ johnny c: That’s the problem, right? The Pistons have some great wing players but the coach never knows who to leave in or who to take out. Trading 2 of them to pad the Pistons’ front court would open up A TONNE of opportunities to whoever is left to really shine.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allenp: You seriously can’t see how the Nets get better? This makes New Jersey better because they’ll have an insanely good starting five that rivals any team in the NBA. Hamilton and Billups won a championship in Detroit without a legitimate, perennial All-Star. Now that they’re slightly older, they DO have a perennial star, as well as a great young center in Brook Lopez who has the ability to become dominant. That’s not better than crappy past few years for them?

  • DR. NICK

HII EVEERYBODDY!!!!!!! CARAMELLO TO JOISEY!!!???! NOT WITH BIILLOOPS!!!!

  • manny

tht would be a terrible trade. neither of those 3 play good defence except billups when he’s motivated, and theres no way he’d b motivated to play for that team in that city. the nets are too stupid to think that carmelo already has new york in mind and he will force his way there. carmelo wont sign any extension with them and the nets sadly will lose out to the knicks who are an exciting team right now. who would YOU rather play for? with amare, and gallo and the nets crazy fans or washed up jersey shore lookin nets team, that can barely hold it together as a franchise. I think the decision making here should be simple.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

They take on big contracts and that core isn’t better than orlando. Seems stupid.
