The Latest in Sacramento Kings Relocation Rumors: Anaheim?

Joe Maloof, co-owner of the team says it’s nothing but rumor-mongering (but admits that he’s keeping all options open), and continues to push hard for a new arena in Sacramento. The Bee has the quotes: “Responding to a column in Monday’s Orange County Register suggesting that the Maloofs are entertaining offers to relocate the franchise to Anaheim because of the region’s inability to provide a modern entertainment complex to house the Kings, co-owner Joe Maloof said: ‘We are looking at all options to ensure the long term viability of this franchise. We’re looking at all our options. Of course you’re going to look at your options! We’re businessmen. We’ve been at this for 10 years without any (arena) success.’ In a calmer voice, the most emotional of the Maloofs acknowledged that he ‘receives calls every day’ from representatives in other cities and insisted ‘nothing has changed.’ ‘There is a sense of urgency because we’ve been at this for so long,’ he said from his cell phone. ‘We can’t sugarcoat it. Everybody knows the region needs a new arena. When the NCAA (Tournament) is refusing to schedule events in Sac, you have to acknowledge that you need an entertainment venue. I can’t give you a time table, but at some point, something has to get done. (Sacramento) mayor Kevin Johnson is working with four different groups, looking at four plans, and we’re hoping something comes out of this. We want to be right here in Sacramento. We’ve always said that. It’s been what? Eleven years? Rumors, rumors, rumors. I get tired of answering all these questions. Can’t we just talk about how much better DeMarcus Cousins is getting?’”

    bring em back to KC/Omaha!

  • EGOT

You’d think staying in Sacto would come together for them, since their mayor is former All-Star. But who knows.

Do we really need 3 teams in SoCal?

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

I like that answer. At least he put things in perspective with the whole business comment. Hate to see them go, but the city officials here in Sacramento don’t seem to have the Kings’ arena as a priority. Except for KJ, but he’s done almost everything he can.

I would move the Clippers to Anaheim first, before I bring in another team to SoCal.

I’d rather talk about Demarcus Cousins also.

VANCOUVER!! That would be the only scenario that doesn’t destroy my basketball psyche. Aside from that the fans in Sacramento deserve a new arena!

After losing the Griz and then the Sonics, (I live in Vancouver, B.C.), I am SICK of teams moving. I say the next 4 teams that request a move get granted their request. Move them to the D League.

After that rant…I would love to have a team closer to me than Portland. I will rescind that rant if they move to Seattle or Vancouver.

Being from Sacramento, I’d hate to lose the Kings. As bad as they are, all of us around here still take pride in our only true professional team. Heck, our airport has Kings stuff on it. However, the lack of support shown by the local government and voters shows that while we value our Kings, they aren’t important enough to fight or pay for. As cool as Las Vegas sounds…do you think David Stern would really want to give Demarcus Cousins millions and let him loose on the strip? If anything, move the team to Seattle where they will surely receive a dedicated fan base.

It would be a shame of the Kings were to leave Sacremento but if they were to leave send them to Seattle. Im always hearing how Seattle really wants a NBA team back.

  • Big Country

Vancouver never had a fair run and Seattle needs a better arena just like Sacramento. I say move them to Vancouver to Rogers Arena and Seattle fans can drive like Vancouver bball fans did to see the Sonics.

OK Maloofs, please tell all of the kings fans that this is a hideous joke of yours. Do you really think that this fraudulant bracelet is going to dig you out of your mess. I’ve got news for you, before it is all over your going to be in a bigger mess if you end up naming our arena “Power Balance Pavillion”. If you are determined to change the name of our arena, may I suggest a better one? I would like to submit the name of “Tinker Bell Pavillion”. Thanks for your consideration.

The Kings are ending the season on a high note. The team is going to have to be dealt with next year. I predict the Kings will win 35 to 45 games next year if we keep all the important pieces. And yes Marcus has made tremendous strides in becoming a real force, but both Demarcus and Tyreke must work hard on their game if the Kings are to be a true threat in the first round of the playoffs next year.
So lst’s keep the faith Sacremento and lets us focus on getting a new arena. To all the politicians in Sacremento wake up and get something done the Kinga are Sacremento!
