Allen, Durant, Pierce Headline Three-Point Contest

The NBA just announced the Three-Point Contest field, and the airways are buzzing already. There’s both returning contestants and newcomers. Two Celtics highlight the former, while Kevin Durant highlights the latter. From the NBA: “Reigning champion Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics will defend his title in this year’s Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Staples Center in Los Angeles as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night. Rounding out the field are All-Stars Ray Allen of the Celtics and Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Daniel Gibson of the Cleveland Cavaliers, James Jones of the Miami Heat, and Dorell Wright of the Golden State Warriors. Allen won the contest in 2001.”

No Steph Curry or Anthony Morrow, but Boobie Gibson. excellent

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Ray, Durant, JJ. In that finishing order.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

How does Morrow not get an invite to that? Dude’s been killing it from behind the ark this year.

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

If Boobie Gibson wins, does that put a dent in Cleveland’s losing streak? Can it count for .5 of a win?

  • lightsout

my boy Ray’s gotta be the favorite here, even though Pierce is the reigning champ. i’m not sure how Durant will do in this. he’s a great scorer, and he makes scorer’s shots (see game winner against the knicks), but i’m not sure he can excel in a contest of stand still shooting.

    Morrow!

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Chris, they have been counting moral victories for the past 25 games.

  • laidlaw

Boobie Gibson… LOL. NBA tossing the Cavs a lifeline or what?

@Chris – moral victories don’t count in the standings.

Also, Blake Griffin will be stationed under the basket for follow slams. Stern knows how to give the people what they want.

  • Sparker

i guess wrong every year, so… durant with the upset

  • vtrobot

if only redheaded dudes from NH were crowd favorites. he def deserves a spot. i like this group tho. should be a good one. @ lightsout: KD looked good during the HORSE game with rondo last year.

  • Towelie

    Where KLovin’ at!?!?!

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Bobbie Gibson, you kiddin’ me? Boobie Gibson???

  • T-Money

kd hasn’t shot the ball really well this year.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

@ vtrobot, I remember that HORSE contest last year, it was amazing, they ( KD & RR) both hit like 10+ consecutive 3s

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

T-money is right. His 3 pt % is not great. I think he’ll do fine, though.

  • http://slamonline.com MVPballer

KD is a very good shooter, so is Boobie. He may not be a very good overall player, but he can shoot the three.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

I’m sure he’ll be on a high by then for breaking Reggie’s record, so…Jesus Shuttlesworth for the win.

  • vtrobot

boobie is currently tied for 9th for % of 3′s made so it’s not like he doesn’t deserve it. in this group, only ray is shooting a higher percentage. KD = currently 93rd.

  • Zeiram

The most ridiculous thing about this is that Ray has almost as many threes as all the other contestants together. He has 1k more than Pierce and 1k more than JJ, Wright and Gibson together. That is insane, Jesus S. for the win in a landslide.

  • tony knorr

“My name is Ray!” yeah! “I hit the three!” yeah! “and when I’m done!” yeah! “you’ll bow to thee!” Lincoln, Linc,Linc,Linc, Lincoln! Roll call!

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

No Morrow, no Redick, no Steph Curry, no contest credibility.

  • lexluther703

    No Redick? Hmm..

  • http://slamonline.com Philly

    Jr Smith ????

  • dma

    One glaring ommission: white people.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    @dma. MATT BONNER!!!

  • youngmuggsy

Isn’t Matt Bonner shooting 50% or something ridiculous like that from behind the arc?

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

I’d swap Redick for James Jones. I think Durant fulfils the need for a young star for name recognition.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

I think “Uncle Ray Ray” will win.

  • robb

jesus shuttlesworth’s gonna show Pierce how it’s done.

  • chrisnuke

    shawne williams.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

    love it, tony knorr!

  • tony knorr

just a little shout out to the he got game fans out there.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

Morrow really wanted to participate last year, got snubbed. This season he really wanted to be in it again, shot really well to become the all time leader in 3pt field goal percentage, got snubbed again.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

more exciting than the dunk contest!!!!!!!!!!!! gonna be sick

  • bashmo

Morrow would be fire if he participated. I think people are sleeping on dorrel wright though…he is currently leading the league in 3′s made at a 41 percent clip if im correct. Thats great accuracy. of course Ray is deadly himself..and will probably make history on Thursday against Los Angeles. Greatest shooter of all time, RESPECT!

  • TSmoove

I got Dorrell Wright with the upset…even though it shouldnt b…also got him for Most Improved Player

  • http://jayemmbee23.tumblr.com Clutch Performer

    Jesus FTW

  • Jose

This is Cleveland’s version of the Finals for them, and boobie gotta get his clutch on. . . lol. . .at least the NBA acknowledges Cleveland exists

  • HAMMER

    “Jesus the notorious”

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

No Williams from Knicks who is leading NBA or Shannon Brown from LA, since in LA. How in the Heck is Dorrell, Paul in this.

  • ripslam

@Seed: PP won it last year, and he said he wanted to defend it, so they let him in.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Cawford

    Luol Deng got robbed.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    lol

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Dorrell Wright is a chucker, not a contest guy….he’s more like a throwback Quentin Richarson

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

goodness grief people Steph Curry was in the contest last year…..just stat watching a little bit you see a lot of cats have been really strokin it this year. Afflalo is a guy who probably deserves a mention, Shawne Williams, Kevin Martin as well, and of course Matt Bonner. The Red Rocket is consistently a 40+ from 3…whats funny is dude is shooting under %70 from the free throw line, being fair he doesn’t get there often but dang…

  • greg

    joel anthony !!!

  • Joe King

    Bonner.. ?

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Have you seen Bonner’s shot? He wouldn’t get through the second rack before time was up.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

How could you guys leave out Keith Bogans??

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Ray Allen hands down, the dude is one of the greatest shooters of all time, and is on fire this year. They should bring back Reggie Miller for a showdown.

  • wilz

boobie has already had more tv time than his entire career should have. i dont hate the guy but enough!

  • Galagu

@Tsmoove…hell ya d.wright!! hah no one else got em winning this especially with ray allen here but ill be cheering for d.wright

  • youngmuggsy

@Nicolas – Yes i have seen Bonner’s shot, it’s ugly as hell but by no means a slow release.

  • http://zenguu Max

Where’s Dwight, Shaq, Jodie Meeks, JJ redick, Morrow and Perk at?

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

If only the people dragging in the dunk contest participants could get it this correct we’d be onto something.

  • don123

@nicolas, i was basically thinking the same thing. i think he’ll panic seeing the clock wind down and he’ll release it a little sooner than he would normally do.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Steph Curry has to be in it, that’s just nuts. I think KD will win it.
