Breaking: Deron Williams Traded to Nets

Former Jazz point guard heads east.

Nobody saw this coming, but it looks like Deron Williams is moving to Jersey.

UPDATE: The Bergen Record reports the move will send Devin Harris, Derrick Favors and two No. 1 picks to Utah for Williams.

The West is the JV league now. They just lost two all stars.

  • MUBWAR

what what … he had a better chance with the raptors.

    Seriously????

  • T-Money

Woj STAYS getting the scoops. / MP is a G.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/2011 Diesel

It looks like this is real…Deron to the Nets for Favors, Harris, and 2 first round picks. Golden state is invloved in the trade as well somehow, they get Troy Murphy. Scratch one players off the list of players the Knicks can sign in 2 years.

  • Nigel

That one came outta left field for sure.

  • samy

c’mon man thats not true its not even on SC

  • apache

why are all the good players going east?

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/2011 Diesel

Does Sloan leave if this happened 2 weeks ago?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

They always say the trades that happen are the ones never discussed.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

The West is about to turn into what the East was for years. Kinda disappointing.

  • KSupreme

If it ain’t on NBA.com its no good from someones twitter

  • Ali

Slow down on saying the West is done or a JV league fellaz. Something serious must have been said or done between him and Sloan.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Good…..Deron is destined for failure now. Karma, b*tch.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Eboy, you are putting a lot of stock on Wojo.
Should we also take him seriously when he prints his next rant based on anonymous sources about LeBron and Wade?
Damn, Deron Williams got punked by Utah though. Man, that’s cold-blooded.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    If this happens, HOLY SH*T!
Carmelo, the stone that released the rockslide.

  • TheNightWatch*8*

    WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????????

  • glovechops

i’ll have to check sources on this one big dog… no reason for such a bonehead deal

  • T-Money

The Russian is so cold. He drove up the price for a player he knew he could not get. Reports are surfacing now that Melo told Denver BEFORE the season that only NY and CHI were in the runnin for an extension. And then he drops the hammer on a deal no one was aware of. Real G’s move in silence like lasagna.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Makes no sense to me, but Deron’s a better signing for the Nets than Melo.

  • Mike From Spain

it seems like yesterday when we were like ‘there is no point to the trade countdown ticker in nba.com, it’s almost two months…’ lo and behold, it is down to 21 hours, how did time go by so quickly?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Well only five players in this league are untouchable:Kobe, Bron, Rose, Durant, and Howard. Anyone else could be had at the right price and this reassures that assumption.

  • ben

I’m not sure why utah is doing this other than if sloan is coming back with williams gone. Utah should lose their teamsince they will now be a joke. Great move for the Nets. D will is better than carmelo.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    Lasagne is silent?

  • glovechops

bonehead deal if it the deal gets cleared… hate to see deron go down with the Nets… there is no other guard on the move to help him in NJ… trashy trade

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Does anyone else besides me think that Favors is gonna be a bust? He’s not explosive and he’s also only 6’9. I think Utah is gonna regret the move in the long run.

  • TRIMEGADON

    holy shit…here we go again … (vomiting…)

  • Nigel

    @Kap what about Griffin?

  • glovechops

check epsn.com its definitely happening… as of now, i dont think its official just yet but its taking place…

  • clockwork

Deron, is gonna flip out. He tought playing for the Jazz was bad this year? Welcome to the Nets

  • T-Money

And… the Knicks didn’t know D-Will was available?! D-Will is a flat out better player than Melo. And with Mike D?! You would have been talking obscene numbers like 22 and 14 or something.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

My bad I forgot about him…yea he is the third most untradeable behind Lebron and Kobe IMO. Looks like the updated 2k rosters are gonna be crazy.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

The Jazz now have a log jam at PF. Milsap or Jefferson may be gon also.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Royal

Don’t sleep on the Nets… The center and Point guard spots are the hardest to fill and they have a top five player at both positions… They have a bright future if Deron re-ups his contract

  • http://bugmarley.com Leonel

I think I’ll second that WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????????

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    He tuned Sloan out, right?
Wait till you get an earful of Avery duckvoice.

  • http://ballislife.com Stephon

If this is true then congrads to Mikhael P. for finally getting the Nets a franchise player.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I knew he was gonna get dealt. His comments and attitude over the last 3 months have screamed get him out of town, now lets see if Sloan makes a return. lol

  • dma

This has obvioysly been the plan for Utah – rebuild and draft the Jimmer next year with Jersey’s draft pick. And thiw probably pissed Sloan off and he peaced out. Just another business move over a basketball move.

  • Jazzgrl

hmmmm….can’t help but think this us all related to sloan retiring. Way to go d will! :(

  • rob

WTF!!!! Y? DAMNIT, DID DERON HAVE ANY SAY ON THIS? GOODLUCK IN NJ DERON…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

WOWWWW!!. Monster steal for the NETS!!!! I sense another trade brewing in Utah now that they have a logjam at PF.

  • yeahbuddy

it’s true..check nba.com. Damn this was out of no where

  • http://bashmo_4@hotmail.com bashmo

WOWWWW. This is sooooo random and unexpected. I can’t believe this. The Jazz sent off one of the best players in the league for not very much. They had developed a superstar in Williams and considering what they recieved, I’s say the Jazz scammed themselves. As for how unexpected this trade was…well I’d have to say after the whole Sloan fiasco, Management were not on the same page as DWill, and felt he had to be traded. This is a ridiculous trade…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The GMs in Atlanta, Sacramento and New York should all be slapped in their mouths for failing to trade for Deron Williams. Seriously. And Larry Bird should probably get smacked too.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

blindsided the mess outta me….curious about the details of this one. DWill wasn’t happy in Utah ever since Ronnie Brewere got traded….figured he’d wait till free agency to make the move..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    @Darksaber
Oh yeah. The lyric T-Money posted is claiming that the “g” in lasagna is silent.
    Only it’s not, it’s just not a hard “g”.
    For clarification purposes.

  • Riggs

    Holy crispus attucks batman

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Thanks AllenP. What song is that lyric from?

  • paul

Rondo’s untouchable. The Cs wouldn’t give him up for anything.

  • r2j

Just woke up outta bed and I hear D-Will going to the Nets. Utah gets Derrick Favors and some draft picks. I think they should bring back Jerry Sloan since D-Will is at Jersey Shore.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    First of all, HOLY SH*T!!!
Secondly, someone on here said Brook Lopez is a top 5 center in the NBA?
    I LOL’d.
Give me Dwight, Bynum, Bogut, Noah, Horford, Gasol and Cousins over Bropez.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Hossy

WOW. Prokhorov is a g! make the knicks hella overpay for melo then get a better player for half the price.

  • http://www.twofistedpress.com Pve84

Seriously. Slap ATL’s GM two times. They would have been a FORCE if they could have somehow acquired Deron.

  • http://zogs zogs

    UNDERCOVER OR WHAT

  • MikeC.

If anything, this increases the Knicks’ chances of getting Williams as a free agent. There was a solid chance that the Jazz would be good and Williams would want to stay. What are the odds that the Nets will be good enough to keep him? Slim. How funny would it be if he jumped to the Knicks when his contract is up?

  • NJ4Life

    Jkidd 2.0 BROOKLYN BABYYYY

  • Gus

Is it me or does this trade insinuate that something went down in
Utah? Aka Deron Williams running Jerry Sloan out of town?

  • rubs93

Does this mean dwill is in a melo situation? Does he have to sign an extension w the nets now or does he lose all that paper in the next CBA? If thats the case then Prokhorov is gangsta for keepin dwill in Brooklyn! Anybody know?

  • KSupreme

This was unexpected….Utah has completely fell apart

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Monta Ellis watch for the next 24 hours lol

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

No one heard a whisper about this trade, which makes it seem out of the blue. But I’m not really surprised.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Williams is not eligible for an extension until next season. So it will be after the new CBA is hashed out.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

@Darksaber It’s that new Lil Wayne song. Don’t know the name.
Dwill could bolt to NY, but he’d have to sacrifice ducats to do it.
Like T-Money said, the Knicks should have been trying to pair Amare and Dwill, and then sell Melo on signing in the offseason. They would have had to sacrifice less to get Dwill because Melo is overvalued, and it would have been a more cohesive pairing.
Can you imagine Dwil and Amare handling business in Mike D’s offense? That would have been AWESOME. And, if Melo really cared about winning, he would have taken the deal with the Knicks in the offseason. Or the Nuggets would have been forced to take less for Melo because New York could then say “We’re cool with him or without him right now.”
I would guess that most of the league assumed that since Sloan got pushed out, the Jazz were committed to Dwill, only they weren’t.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

What the hell is going on?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

Are they renting Deron or has he agreed to an extension. Isn’t his contract up in 2012?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

oops, shoulda read nbk before I typed. Thanks 4 the info, nbk.

  • bails1

Brook Lopez top 5 C? Wow!

  • hambone

somewhere Jerry Sloan, the mailman and Greg Ostertag are smiling

  • MUBWAR

Lil wayne 6’7 is the name of the track. And I taught T-Money didn’t like rap or weazy for that matter.

  • Brrat

    AAYYYYEEEEEEE

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

What the hell???? Just turned on my PC and I see this on NBA and ESPN.com. Out of nowhere. I still can’t believe it.

  • JTaylor21

No way DWill resigns with the Red Fellas once his contract is up. I’m still mad at the Hawks for passing on Cp and DWill for “Starvin” Marvin Williams. Also that Lasagna line is from 6’7″.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Doesn’t the fact that Dwill got traded prove he wasn’t behind Sloan’s resignation?
You telling me Williams had a worse attitude than Karl Malone who fought CONSTANTLY with Sloan?
Why would management side with Williams against an icon like Sloan if they were planning to trade Williams?
Maybe, just maybe, we don’t understand what happened at all because the information currently available doesn’t make logical sense.
You don’t pick a player over your iconic coach and then trade that player to rebuild. That’s stupid.

  • Riggs

@allen: i dont think this deal was even talked about until late last night, nobody had an inkling that the jazz were shipping Dwill anywhere from what i’ve read.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

I think Kevin’s reaction sums it up perfectly.
What the hell is going on?
This was stealthier than an F22 sneaking up on a clueless Sukhoi.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

I know everyone wants to talk about D Will, and rightfully so.
But how will this affect Favors?
Will he be buried on the bench behind Millsap and Jefferson?
Will those two teach him how to be a beast?
Is either Jefferson or Millsap’s time numbered now?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Riggs
    I’m not disagreeing.
But, it’s not the general public’s job to know which players are available. That’s the job of general managers, right?
If your team is in desperate need of a point guard, you should have all the teams with good point guards on speed dial just to ask them “What’s up?”
Somehow, the Nets got a deal in place that really isn’t that spectacular. So obviously they were smart enough to call.

  • Overtime

The Jazz seem to be flailing right now. As recent of June they had Boozer, Korver, Brewer, Williams and most importantly, Sloan. Now, none of them.
This is not a bball move, they obviously wanted Deron out (or vice versa).

  • DeeDre

@Kap. What about DWade? He’s def untouchable

  • Hussman25

All I can say is…. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@Allenp – I actually just read that Deron Williams is quote “in a league of his own when it comes to creating problems” – Maybe he pushed Sloan out, not making Utah choose but literally pushed him out. And then Utah got scared he would do that with future coaches and players and kill the team in the lockerrom that they said eff it, this is the kid we wanted in the draft, plus Devin Harris is a good PG, and we got picks, can’t get any better then this! – that makes sense to me, and it also explains why Williams was traded, and why Sloan quit, without saying the Jazz don’t make sense

  • Riggs

@Allen: i dont know whether its true or not but im reading that the jazz contacted the nets.

  • DeeDre

And I’m shocked like all of you and it was a steal on the Nets behalf. But Utah did pick up a nice and maybe promising rookie with two No 1 picks. Plus lets not forget, Devin Harris is far from a slouch and he could succeed with a better team, and Utah is a better team than the Nets with or without Williams

  • Shem

This is the biggest deal since the KG trade. It’s not like Melo where his contract was expiring, D Will is a a Net for another 2 years..

  • unrel

@Kap.. i wouldn’t say the west will be JV.. but the west have been a 2 team conference for over a decade.. teams need to do whatever they can to push the lakers/spurs.. and losing d.will and melo to the EC.. only frees up more light for everyone that got snubbed in this year’s all star game.. the west is still very deep..

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Royal

Hortford and Gasol are centers? Thanks for returning the LOL

  • http://www.slamonline.com mvpitzki

Why didn’t mark cuban make a call to Utah?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Thanks Riggs.
NBK, where did you hear that about Williams.
I’m not saying it’s not true, dude definitely has some anger issues, but it’s crazy how this stuff comes gushing out all of a sudden.

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

He asked for it now he can play in NY.

  • Red Star

All I can say is WOW!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Via Twitter – @TrueHoop: Why only saying this now? RT @sluhm source last week told me Deron was in “a league of his own” as far as creating problems. “@sluhm” explained that “they” are/were working on a story about it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

he is the beat writer for the Salt Lake Tribune. Makes sense that this wouldn’t come out while he is still wearing a Jazz uniform, considering the source had to come from within the organization, and I doubt they were trying to ruffle current players feathers, you know?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Contrary to popular belief…NY won’t have enough money under the cap under the next CBA to sign a Chris Paul or Deron Willliams. No center that averages 5 rebounds a game is a top five center either.

  • hillbilly

BOOOOM! Shake the room. This is some seriously stunning sh!t, right here.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    @Royal – Who’s “Hortford”?
And yes, Al Horford and MARC Gasol do indeed play center.

  • Yes.We.Did.

If Melo’s Trade was the Indecision, then this trade is the Vengeance of Jerry Sloan!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Horford plays center, but he isn’t a center by any other definition. He’s a PF, and has made it very clear that’s what he wants to be considered.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

NJ draft pick will be valuable also that they traded to Utah. NJ also got Brandon Wright from GS. He was hyped up like Favors during the draft and his first year.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Royal

Sorry I’m not a spelling bee champion bud….but hortford/horford is not a pf …… i assumed you were talking about Pau ,but IMO I would rather have Brook than Marc .Brooks is better, his confidence has just been shot by Avery.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Yes, nbk, but for the sake of this particular argument, he’s a center.
Royal said Brook Lopez is a top 5 center.
    I begged to differ.
And while Horford is a natural PF, and me, you, him, his pops and everyone else would love to see him play PF, he’s played C his whole short career in the NBA.
Therefore, for the sake of this argument, Horford is a better center than Lopez, in my opinion.

  • Feez22

The clippers just rejoiced in delight with this trade going down… nuggets & clippers are about to go into free fall mode. Maybe not this yr but definitely next. Clippers playoff bound nxt yr? lol this is crazy. The east is just stacking teams now what kind of ish is this? Oh well… The west will be back they draft much better than the eastern conference. Man the nba just got that more interesting… i could give 2 s$&t’s if utah has a bad team… i hate the jazz.

  • JTaylor21

I hate when people believe all those so-called “sources” claiming that players are malcontents. Do you ever sit back and think that maybe just maybe all those reporters that write such stories with claims of having an inside source are most likely lying just to generate more views and publicity?

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Royal – I get the whole Horford PF/C thing, though like I told nbk, in my opinion, if a guy’s playing out of position, then he oughta be compared to others of that position as well. And Lopez is skilled, but what does it say about your center’s toughness if he’s not even able to withstand the ragin’ cajun midget’s verbal onslaught?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ofcourse that’s what you assume, that’s the first thing i assumed when i read that tweet, but it also occurred to me that it makes sense, its at least worth examining.

  • http://www.slamonline.com The Ambassador

Didnt go to school today, thought it was a going to be a regular day, go to espn and hear that DWILL got traded to the Nets!!! First I was in shock I was like there is no way Utah would do this then I go to slamonline and slams says DWILL go traded WTF!!!! Dwill or Utah idk who wanted the trade made a deperate and dumb move. From 8th seed in the west to no where in the east good luck Dwill at least you can make an appearence in Jersey Shore and bang Snooki!!!! I hate that players are now going to make super teams and leave small market teams like Utah,Denver and other teams to become lottery teams. The West is becoming the East of the future NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

And I apologize for the “Hortford” thing, I’m not the best speller either.
And I spell like a five year old when I’m on my iphon on here.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Nets lose big time on this trade. They got a great player, but they traded away their future. Favors could end up being a great player, and they won’t have a first round pick until 2013. Sorry, but the Nets are not going to lure superstars to play there. Not a great place to live, even worse place to play.

  • dsleepy

so with the jazz now having the logjam at pf, does big al get moved maybe to Orlando, to play with Dwight? maybe for jrich + jameer with AK47 thrown in for salary match, and assuming he is leaving the NBA after this season to play in mother russia?!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I would be quite interesting if NJ draft pick ends up becoming a #1 pick or even a top 3 pick. Utah has set themselves up nicely. Maybe they can draft Fredette with their other pick this year.

  • ClydeSays

This is a nice move for the Nets IF they can hang on to Williams & Lopez. If it’s a 1 1/2 season rental, they gave up some crucial picks. All of sudden the Atlantic looks pretty good.

Does Sloan come back now? “I was just joking around with you guys. I’m back!”

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

The new CBA supposedly may include a franchise tag or make it very tough to lose your star player so I think DWill is gonna be a Net for awhile whether he likes it or not unless he takes a hugh pay cut.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Co-sign Kap. Thats why I said the Nets got burned on the trade. If its a #1 pick, Utah probably ends up with Jared Sullinger or Kemba Walker. I like my chances with either of those guys.

  • Jasmine

Wow this is just getting WACK now!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

    @Promise…or Kyrie Irving

  • robb

deron + Lopez’s gonna be very interesting to watch. But deron has to be very patient though, it will take a while to have a solid team, but it’s a good start for sure.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

No way is Kemba Walker going first overall.
Highest I’ve seen him in any mock draft board is 7th.
Dude’s great, but not a number one overall pick.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

if Kemba Walker gets picked in the top 3 this is the worst draft, maybe ever. Derrick Williams, Sullinger, and Barnes should be 1/2/3 in no particular order

  • Jasmine

Actully look at the bright side! The East just earned to All Star Players for next year! But its all bout MIA!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

or Kyrie Irving my bad, 1/2/3/4

  • Jalepino Sauce Age

Beyonce was part of the deal.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

This is off topic but does Harrison Barnes remind anyone of Marvin Williams? They have similar hype how they are/were the NBAs next superstar.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

jazz make out like bandits in this one

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@Kap he does in terms of athletic ability and body type, but he is much more aggressive and confident on the court then Williams was IMO. Marvin is only like 24 he could still turn out to be pretty good, not great or anything but a good player. Which is kind of how I see Barnes in a worse case scenario

  • L

It’s nice to know that next year we won’t have a weak east bench on the all star game..Good bye Ray Ray and Al Horford..L

  • Courtside

Now the Nets get Dwight Howard in 2012. They can offer Brook Lopez who is young and not injury-prone like Bynum.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Royal

    It’s all good…

  • robz

    crazy deal…dang

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

I think Barnes will be better than Williams but he’s gotta show us something in the tourney. So far he’s been a dissapointment but I remember him dominating all the high school all star games last year.
Chris Paul’s gonna hold down the starting PG spot in the West All Star squad for a minute now.
Steve Nash and Jason Kidd are done.
Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose and Deron Williams are in the East.
Russ Westbrook is his only competition now.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@Kap: Irving could be a good pick, if I were a GM, he would have to prove to me that foot was healed, 100 percent. If so, thats a good pick. Enigmatic, I know good and well that Walker is at least a top 5 pick, this is the weakest draft in recent memory. He wouldn’t be my top pick, but I could understand if he got picked first. He has a ton of potential, and had an NBA-ready game. I don’t think you would have to develop him like you would have to develop guys like Barnes, Terrence Jones, etc. But Sullinger is the top pick, not even a question.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@nbk…I find Barnes pretty passive and not aggressive . He also isn’t athletic like people claimed he was.Don’t you agree? I just don’t think he will be the next Kobe or a superstar at all like everyone suggests.

  • Jalepino Sauce Age

@stepfan. I think it was more along the lines of Jerry Sloan saying i paid my dues & i aint taking this shit, thats what you get for moaning you little B!^# .

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

*Has an NBA-ready game* excuse my typo

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Sullinger scares me because he has not played against length yet plus the weight issues. I think Terrence Jones will dominate as soon as he enters the league.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

@ The Promise – I do agree Walker is a lot more NBA ready than, say, Perry Jones (who I honestly think should stick around for one more year to polish his game but he won’t cause he’s a lottery pick this year), but Walker has so much going against him.
Lack of size, questionable decision-making, turnover-prone, and you know these days GM’s are reluctant to draft college juniors and seniors that high in the draft, as if sticking around in college for more than two years must mean you’re not very good, which is ridiculous of course.

  • the truth

Coming from a UK fan, Jones shows some huge potential, but has an awkward game and struggles to score one on one. I agree about sullinger though, how many NBA level athletes has he played against in the post?

I think Sullinger might be a tad undersized to be the top pick. But he might be. Elton Brand is, what, 6’8″? And he went first over all.
Terrence Jones has been awesome. His wingspan is off the charts and he’s extremely aggressive but doesn’t play out of control.
I like either Terrance Jones, Kyrie Irving or Harrison Barnes for the top pick.
Could be Perry Jones too because he has loads of potential.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@Kap oh no he is not gonna be what he was supposed to be, but i think the slippery slope of undervaluing a should’ve been is kind of what’s effecting Barnes, he was supposed to be a shoe-in for the 1st pick, not its questionable whether he’ll even enter the draft. I think he will be a good player, not great, not bad, but better then Marvin Williams

  • Allenp

    Reporters rarely make stuff up.
but they are quoting anonymous people who should have their motives questioned. Anonymous people shouldn’t be allowed to take shots at folks. Also executives get way more chances to speak anonymously than players. Which slants things.
Reporters typically speak most often to executives and thus their informaion should be viewed through that prism.

SMH at some of the ridiculous comments regarding Deron Williams compared to Melo. Melo is far and away a better player (not to mention more clutch) than Deron Williams. Only some FOOL would “swallow” Deron Williams being more a killer and champion than Melo on the basketball court. SMH

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/2011 Diesel

Yeah nbk I’m with you as far as not paying for some half-@ssed rumor report. I’m following the yahoo sports and ball don’t lie twitters. For the Bulls, I think they’re going hard after Lee, Mayo probably won’t happen. Bulls are basically hoping Houston will take 2 first round picks for Lee. If they have to include one of their big men its not happeneing.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

nbk – Asik is untradable too.
Dude is too big, too fast, too strong, too good!
Sorry, that’s my Stacey King-tourrettes kicking in.

Make it Bogans and the Heat’s first rounder though, and that would be a sweet deal.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I hear you about Asik, but its better to give him up then Gibson. Especially if you plan on competing before 5 years from now, and they really really need a SG to win a series, and Bogans and the 29th pick in the 1st round can’t possibly get you a proven Courtney Lee, or even Anthony Parker. But that’s me assuming Cleveland, Houston and every other team is more interested in proven player value then a draft pick

Hey, I remember someone (I think it was nbk) conjectured that perhaps Sloan had a beef with management over a possible Deron Williams trade.
    Well, THIS IS IT.
I’m thinking the D-Will/Coach Sloan fallout wasn’t really THAT serious, but enough of an excuse for management to trade Williams. Sloan probably sensed this and re-signed as a result. They may have had their differences but they had a great rapport. Sloan is one of the best at working with point guards.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

You need a SG to win a series, but in today’s NBA you also need a lot of size to compete for a title.
Omer Asik gives you a 7-footer off the bench that can rebound, block shots and run the floor pretty decently for a big man.
We lose him, and we get a lot smaller.
And he’s so skilled for a rookie big man. I mean, he’s not Shaq or Yao Ming and never will be, but you can see he has tons of potential.
If he gains some weight and gets some moves, he can be a Ghostface Pryzbilla type of player.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

I would like to see nash traded next 2 a contender, it would make the playoffs even better.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Do I think Deron Williams is a great player? Yes, without a doubt, but not better than Melo. No chance. Deron Williams is NOT someone you build your team around. Bottom line, Melo is hands down a better player than Deron Williams. Melo is bona fide superstar, and the most clutch player in the NBA during winning time outside of Kobe Bryant…Deron is a bona fide Robin, and imho somewhat of a punk for his role in Jerry Sloan resigning in Utah. Karma is a beyotch. lol

  • HAMMER

Every so often the power of the conferences shifts. Its bout time the East became a beast again

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Enigmatic, would you rather win this year or next? i guess is what i’m askin… IAMORANGE4EVER Deron Williams has done JUST AS MUCH as Melo in terms of success as a player a team builds around. Williams is also a PG, and its a proven fact its easier to win with a top notch PG then a top notch SF, that’s just the way it is. Great SF’s are actually the hardest type of star to win with, they don’t control the pace, aren’t near the hoop to affect more then themselves and their man, its just not as important as a position. So whether or not Melo is “better” is kind of irrelevant, Deron Williams likely has more of an impact on any teams success. You can check the history of the NBA if you don’t believe me. Teams that have won a title with their SF as their best player – Boston Celtics with Larry Bird, that’s it.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Enigmatic – what’s the Bulls record versus the Knicks this season? Answer: 0-2. 0 wins. Which is the same number of times you’ve been right this season when challenging/debating me. And LOL…Felton helped my Knickas get Melo sucker. I’m gonna miss Felton, but I’ll gladly take Chauncey Billups aka Mr. Big Shot aka Smooth for the next two seasons. Melo, Smooth, and Stat all know how to get to the Conference Finals. Has Rose got out of the first round yet? Oh that’s right. Ha ha ha…I can’t wait for my Knicks to play your pesky Bulls again. I’ll be looking forward to another day of you making more “fluke” excuses.

  • MattM

I’ve watched pretty much every UNC game this year and Barnes will take the big shots and he has made enough that when he shoots I think it is going in. That said he does tend to disappear for stretches. UNC throws the ball inside to Zeller and Henson a lot though. I think Barnes can be a really, really good player but not a great player in the league.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I feel you matic, but really, with what money are you going to get a C.Lee in the future? Your gonna have to pay asik, Gibson, Rose (or did he already get paid?) pretty soon. You think they can trade Ronnie Brewer & Asik and that 1st round pick for C.Lee and Jordan Hill, that would atleast bring back a skilled big, what you think about that?

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

A Knicks fan asking me if Rose has made it past the first round yet?
No, but he has more playoff appearances in his first two years than your Knicks have had in the last ten.
Oh, and at least he’s won some playoff games too.
Knicks’ playoff record in the last 10 years? 0-4.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

A Melo/Williams preference depends on how the rest of your roster is built I suppose, but if forced to choose – in general terms – I’d take Deron over Melo. Just.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

The earliest Rose can sign an extension is this summer, I believe.

Celtics and Lakers really messing up the league. First the Boston Big Three, then the Gasol “trade”. Players and teams started to realize they weren’t going to beat either team by going with the status quo. This situation created “the Decision”, and then Carmelo going to NYC. Now Utah knows it has no chance and is blowing up the team. After that, Chris Paul is going to further consolidate the good players into a few teams by going to NYC, perhaps? Madness.

i wonder if the melo trade had something to do with this since d will wanted to go to new york, i spose utah didnt wanna just let him go and get nothing back for him. prolly a good move in the long run

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    from ESPN Chat today –

    Cory (Brooklyn)

What do you know about DWill almost going to the Kings? What was the deal? Why did it fall through?
    Ryen Russillo (4:26 PM)

Heard after the trade Utah was really upset with Deron Williams. Don’t know if it’s spin or the truth. Feeling was Utah was happy sending him to a bad franchise like New Jersey. Houston was offering their normal collection of garbage, and Sacramento had a chance with a certain package. But ultimately, Utah wanted to put him in the Eastern Conference.

  • http://bashmo_4@hotmail.com bashmo

All I know is that the Nets have less than a calendar year to find players to build around DWill because of his expiring contract in 2012 and make a run in the eastern playoffs. The odds of the latter are pretty damn low, and when you combine that with the possibility of a lockout the odds drop even further, so I’m going to out on a limb and say the DWill will be in New York for the 2012 – 2013 nba season. CP3 will be in New Orleans or Orlando.
