Gallery: What If…

…these 10 players weren’t stopped by injury, illness, scandal or worse?

The only players eligible for our historic Top 500 issue (on sale now!) were guys who played at least five years in the NBA. But think of all the great players who weren’t even in the discussion. This is one of the four other lists included in the issue, filled with ballers who warrant our respect forever, regardless of their NBA careers (or lack thereof). Here we count down 10 guys who could’ve amounted to so much more, had it not been for a variety of tragic, unfortunate and unlucky events.

Guys Guys Guys, you keep talking about athletes who are sometimes not real basketball players … So when the body doesn’t follow, nothing is left. But what about RALPH SAMPSON ? The Twin Towers in Houston anyone? And a careed ended in Spain with 2 or 3 PPG ?

If Dominique would not have gotten hurt, went to Greece, etc. he would have easily scored over 30,000 points. If Dom and MJ would have played straight through, they would be the top two scorers in the NBA. People keep talking about Len Bias, but Dom was the only guy who could match MJ basket for basket in his prime. Dom was leading the NBA in scoring when he ruptured his Achilles.

What about Ben Wilson? What if he didn’t get shot and killed in November 1984? He was the best senior player in the nation for 1984-85, and was primed to go to Illinois with Nick Anderson. He was supposed to be a great one.
