Jerry Sloan Resigns

by Ryne Nelson

One of the winningest coaches of all time, Jerry Sloan may unceremoniously call it quits this afternoon, according to a report out of Salt Lake City.

Maybe Sloan’s rumored exit is fitting for the hard-nosed stalwart, who never asked for an inch of limelight during his career as player or coach.

From KSL:

KSL has learned that Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and assistant coach Phil Johnson will resign at a press conference later Thursday.

More details will be posted as they become available.

The news comes after the Jazz lost to Chicago in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, where former Jazz players Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer helped the Bulls escape Utah with a 91-86 win.

After the game, Sloan didn’t come out of his office for a postgame interview until about a half-hour after his team lost for the 10th time in 14 games.

The Hall of Famer, who usually talks to reporters about 10 minutes after the final buzzer, had been in a discussion with general manager Kevin O’Connor.

“We just had something we had to discuss,” Sloan said, “and we’ll talk to you all later on about that.” A major part of the discussion, however, was the possibility of a trade in the works.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    *will lose

WHAT! Pleez tell me its a joke! I thought he was suppose 2 sign a 1yr extension just yesterday. Shocked!

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Wow, this is easily the biggest surprise of this season. I swear, I never ever thought I’d see the day Sloan would leave the Jazz.

  • Flight

Stunned. Hopefully its just a rumor.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If Deron Williams is about to be dealt I could see that as the reason Sloan is done, if not then is it not being a real contender and feeling like rebuilding is on the way?

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Jazz have called a press conference for 3 PM today.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

I think this means the Cavs will win tomorrow.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Oh, wow.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Stepfan

the end of an era….Deron Williams is next.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

From re-signing to resigning in three days!

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

ok, this doesnt just happen one day out of the blue. thought goes into it. both Sloan and the front office. why did he just sign an extension last month? actually, nvm. the quote is hilarious. always love his attitude about things….

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

…“I’ve already signed a contract for next year,” he said after shootaround at Arco Arena in preparation for tonight’s game against the Kings. “That’s been since, maybe, around the first of the year. I don’t remember what the date was on it. I never pay any attention to it. They offered it to me and I signed it.” “I didn’t need an announcement,” Sloan said. “Hell, it’s not a big deal to me. And I don’t know what it does. Either one of us can go the opposite direction. I’ve been around long enough and they’ve been around long enough to know if they want to get rid of me, that’s all they have to do.”

  • http://twitter.com/smk73 SMK73

Mubarak outlasted Jerry Sloan… two days ago you couldn’t even get odds on that.

  • izzo

In honor, we should all spend the day calling people “f*cking c**ts” followed by “it’s okay. I’m old and folksy”.

  • vmcb

wow, I read the title as “Jerry Sloan to re-sign” and I thought to myself “duh, this was reported a few days ago…”. This is pretty monumental, though. He was a great coach in this L, he just couldn’t get it done.

  • Brahsef

I have a feeling without Sloan the Jazz will be bad for many many years. Sad day for the NBA, Sloan is a great coach…hate to see him leave.

  • robb

Jerry will do great coaching for another team. He’s the man.

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

The Jazz will be out of the playoffs for a long time.
    And what I forgot.
No really. I want to know the reason.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Damn…..another team would be lucky to get him to lead their team.

  • T-Money

Wow. I think the players where starting to tune him out a little bit. Especially Deron.

  • joe

like i said who wants to play in utah, when they don’t pay their players good money. When former players start beating the jazz in your home court, thats when it starts to sink in. we can’t win like this. This coach deserves better.

  • Atsushi

    I’m really surprised.

Many GMs are rubbing their hands now…

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

If last night was his last as a coach, it’s fitting that it was against the team that retired his jersey so many years ago.

  • Cizzo

They might as well sell the team people it’s over n Utah… They let the whole starting line up leave in the offseason and Coach Sloan, who is a great Hall of Famer didn’t have any tangible personel…. He problaby don’t like coaching these crybaby ass AAUers anyway…. Im sure!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Definitely shocking news. One of the greatest coaches.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/2011 Diesel

I read AK was in the office with Sloan and the GM too? Anyone have any other details other than what they’re going to say at the press conference?

    R.I.P. Jerry Sloan

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

jerry sloan had so much longevity and won for so long. With or without a title he was great

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    wait wait wait…
last I checked, Sloan hasn’t won a coach of the year, and now he’s gone?
this is totally out of the blues. bigger news than lebron signing with heat.

  • elrompeculosdeloslakers

I heard cleveland is looking for a coach with experience. All kidding aside, hey coach just retire and enjoy the rest of your time with family and grandkids, you have nothing to prove to anyone, your career speaks for it’s self, enjoy the rest of your life because you have earned it.

  • http://fouronesix-raptors.blogspot.com/ Fouronesix

Something definitely went on with management, now the assistant is stepping down too apparently?

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

I love Sloan too, class act and a helluva coach, but I can’t be the only person on this site that thinks its time for a change for both side? 23 years, a lot of regular season wins, but only 2 Finals appearances. He wouldn’t have lasted that long anywhere else. Byron Scott went to the finals twice and got fired the very next year. Its a true testament to the loyalty he was shown by the Jazz Owners and the loyalty he showed them when he probably could have left for bigger money. But its been a long time coming in my opinion.

  • Drew

He never won a chip either.

  • hoodsnake

I think him and Deron were bumping heads behind the scenes. Let’s hope this stays a rumour.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    According to Adrian Wajowihatelebronski –

Sloan’s relationship with point guard Deron Williams(notes) had grown progressively worse over the course of the season, league sources said, and the coach had tired of dealing with the team’s best player. The frustration escalated on Wednesday night when Sloan and Williams clashed in the locker room at halftime.

“He decided right there in halftime that he was done,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports. “He felt like ownership was listening more to Williams than they were to him anymore. He was done.”

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Ya’ll need to follow this on twitter, it is sad, enlightening and funny all at the same time. Damn Jerry Sloan, I hope you are willing to coach another team and not just retire cause you are one of the greats.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

@Enigmatic: that’s a bad look on Deron. one who drove away a 23year-tenured Hall of Fame coach? heavy.

  • http://www.iowsports.com/ Blue

I hope he becomes a National TV commentator…that would definitely be must see TV!! As a die-hard Rockets fan, I salute you Coach Sloan…

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Deron better hope John Stockton and Karl Malone don’t find him and whoop his ass.
Jeff “Horny” Hornaceck can come too…
I just wrote that last part to have a reason to write “horny” on here. LOL

  • PistolPete1988

Wow. It a shame cause of the bulls he never got a ring. & the same bulls team but different generation sent him into retirement. Salute to 1 of the top coach off alltime.

  • karma

“I just wrote that last part to have a reason to write “horny” on here. LOL ”

    I just died laughing.

  • burnt_chicken

Incredible. One of the best! I bet he gets a few offers elsewhere, and it would be real interesting to see what he can do with another team.

  • http://brimartin13@gmail.com Brion

Goodbye Spo, hello Sloan. (just kiddin)

  • el_larsen

deron makes sloan go and then will walk away in free agency.he wants to shoot more like drose .

“They say the never really miss you till you dead or you gone/ or on that note I’m leaving after this song”

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    *so on that note

  • bashmo

SUCKS! Unfortunately for Sloan his team went up against the GOAT both trips to the finals. That says it all. And the fact that he has never won coach of the year is shocking too. Jazz will make playoffs still. As long as Dwill is still on the squad.

  • Oli

press conference live streaming right now on nba.com

  • holiday

I highly doubt Sloan will coach again, he was one of the best coaching a small market team where nobody wanted to play yet in 23 year only had one losing season and missed the playoffs 3 times pretty impressive! Some coaches only coach superstar studded teams like the bulls of the 90′s and Lakers early and late in the 2000′s (not naming anybody specifically ;) ) yet he took what he had and got the most out of it!

  • el_larsen

    cosign holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Double J

Welcome to LA Jerry Sloan, Phil left the seat nice and warm for you.

  • el_larsen

the guy called greg seems to lie

  • http://bugmarley.com Leonel

    Damn! What now Deron?!

  • Overtime

This is actually historical, and by far becomes THE story of the year. He has been with the Jazz longer than some NBA players have been ALIVE.
Butting heads with management or Deron, well I hope its not that, because he has had such a rich history of the Jazz having some great management/relationships.
Ive always had the most respect for them, keeping Sloan that long, even in the non playoff years (all like 3 of them) they had his back.
I love Deron Williams, he’s one of my faves, but Im sorry, if the reports of them clashing are true, after all Sloan has given you, YOU MOVE DERON.
And I’d be surprised to find many Jazz fans that disagree. Think you’ll see the Jazz in the playoffs next year? I doubt it

  • tavoris

didn’t he sign a one year extension like two days ago?

  • Overtime

And the reason they suck this year, when really they dont actually, is simple lack of effort from the players. Have you seen Al Jefferson look interested in a game yet? The roster movement by management was useless, they just let the team walk

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

  • Josh Drake

Wow. I was coming onto this site hoping for some news on the melo front, but this is even bigger! Hope he comes back to the NBA

  • Shem

This may help the Jazz in the long run because Williams doesn’t necessarily like Sloan so if they bring in a Williams-friendly coach he may decide to stay. I doubt it though, Sloan is easily a Hall of Fame coach and coaching changes this far into the season don’t usually lead to success.

  • Mike from Spain

Damn! This really makes me like Deron less…

  • dma

It just had to come after the bulls game too. Can’t be easy to see half your starting lineup playing on another team. I’m thinking jazz wanted to tank so they couldndraft Jimmer and Sloan said eff that I quit.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Did nobody else read that classic comment by Izzo?
I see you Izzo, I see you.

  • JTaylor21

See now the media is making it seem like it’s all DWill’s fault but they are failing to point out that Sloan and the GM got into a heated argument. Reason #1,001 to hate the media. F*ck the media expect for Slam, of course.

  • c.a.

To put this into perspective, if the Jazz hired a coach tomorrow, and he had the same tenure as Sloan, the guy would resign in 2034.

I heard the lakers are interested in him,but not to coach but to play. lakers need help in the back court to go against the celtics.

  • Pharaoh

Jerry Sloan retires after losing to the BULLS. Story of his career

  • Brown14

He’s an amazing coach, but i think he’s maybe just a little too “old school” to coach anywhere but Utah. Good luck to him though, a lot of great coaches/players retire without rings, it’s nothing to be ashamed of

  • riggs

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

One of the greatest coaches ever, and definitely a favorite of mine. Good luck and enjoy your retirement, Jerry Sloan.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Horny Hornacek… That’s some disturbing alliteration right there.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

LET ME SAY 1 THING TO DEFEND MY BOY DERON. he is a very good player in this league. i could tell by watching him the past month his heart wasnt into this tearm. last night playing my boy d.rose (on his way to greatness), i realized dwill passion wasnt in that game. i also understand why. he know this team is limited and he is at the point where he just wants to win and compete with other great players. its only so many times u can make it to the 2nd round and lose to more talnted teams. he realizes that. sloan has been around forever but dont think dwill made him retire. he left because i feel his heart was never into this years team either. at his age he felt it was time to move on.

  • qwerty

dont think deron is the one to be blamed. good player, deserving all star. i think he just wants to win a lot. the jazz has just given away a bunch of good players before this season and only managed to get al jefferson. the team is limited and only potentially a 1st round exit waiting to happen. no moves were made yet to make the team better. and the situation is different from the east considering the west coast’s depth. coach sloan is a great coach, but we all need to move on.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The Jazz are still having a pretty good season. They don’t really have a reliable 2 guard and that’s been hurting them–nor do they have a great bench–but they do have arguably the best front court in the NBA today.

  • lockon

as usual, adrian wojnarowLAMEski and yahoo sports blowing things out of proportion. really upsetting this guy is around

  • lockon

Adrian Wojnarowski- one of the signs of impending apocalypse. always hating on players. sla you better give him a special issue so he will stop!

Well, hope Sloan can enjoy his time now that he’s retired! Great coach, great resume.

  • Gus

way to go Deron, classic cancer of the NBA, some people even tagged this guy as “the best pg” back in 2010…please…go and take some lessons from Nash, a total class act…go even closer, Stockton might be willing to tell you a thing or two about being more of a winner and less of a diva

  • Towelie

This is something you don’t expect.

  • ryan

It makes what Carlos Boozer said on his return to SLC all the more interesting. Enjoy retirement Jerry Sloan I’ve sure as hell enjoyed your teams over the years.

And Deron Williams if you were feuding with the man own your part of the blame and grow from it you’re too good and too smart to become a cancer.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

I wonder how long he has been itching to give it up.

  • Justin

How this man never won Coach of the Year is beyond me. If this had anything to do with Deron being a b*tch, then that’s a joke. All of these whiny little pu$$ies who can’t take a coach holding them accountable is pathetic. Enjoy your retirement Jerry, you deserve it!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Sigh. Anonymous magazine sources tell me that the collective IQ of most SLAM commenters is 60 and many of them are closeted homosexuals which explains their penchant for turning to sexually explicit terms to express themselves… See how easy that is to do?

  • P801

I live in Utah, and am a Jazz fan..however, I was not a huge fan of Sloan, although I would never have gotten rid of him. The problem lies within our upper management..Kevin O’Connor and so forth. That’s who needs to go. As much as Deron Williams helps, he alone will never get us a championship, same as Chris Paul. Point guards cannot handle that..you take a decent pg, and surround them with scorers(Fisher, Rondo, hell, even Arroyo)…and look what you get. I also heard from an insider who is from the organization, that Sloan resigning had little to do with Williams, and actually involved Andre Kirlenko. Supposedly a few weeks ago, O’Connor and others sat down with Sloan and told him they were going to trade AK, and Sloan said no way, not this year. After the Chicago game, they sat down again and said they were going to trade him no matter what, Sloan basically gave them an ultimatum, and O’Connor was willing to let him go…and it’s ironic AK got hurt during the Phoenix game…guess we’ll see if he gets traded soon.
