Jerry Sloan Resigns

by Ryne Nelson

One of the winningest coaches of all time, Jerry Sloan may unceremoniously call it quits this afternoon, according to a report out of Salt Lake City.

Maybe Sloan’s rumored exit is fitting for the hard-nosed stalwart, who never asked for an inch of limelight during his career as player or coach.

From KSL:

KSL has learned that Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and assistant coach Phil Johnson will resign at a press conference later Thursday.

More details will be posted as they become available.

The news comes after the Jazz lost to Chicago in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, where former Jazz players Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer helped the Bulls escape Utah with a 91-86 win.

After the game, Sloan didn’t come out of his office for a postgame interview until about a half-hour after his team lost for the 10th time in 14 games.

The Hall of Famer, who usually talks to reporters about 10 minutes after the final buzzer, had been in a discussion with general manager Kevin O’Connor.

“We just had something we had to discuss,” Sloan said, “and we’ll talk to you all later on about that.” A major part of the discussion, however, was the possibility of a trade in the works.

Wow, this is easily the biggest surprise of this season. I swear, I never ever thought I’d see the day Sloan would leave the Jazz.

  • Flight

Stunned. Hopefully its just a rumor.

If Deron Williams is about to be dealt I could see that as the reason Sloan is done, if not then is it not being a real contender and feeling like rebuilding is on the way?

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Jazz have called a press conference for 3 PM today.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    THANKS LANG!

I think this means the Cavs will win tomorrow.

    Oh, wow.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Stepfan

the end of an era….Deron Williams is next.

From re-signing to resigning in three days!

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

ok, this doesnt just happen one day out of the blue. thought goes into it. both Sloan and the front office. why did he just sign an extension last month? actually, nvm. the quote is hilarious. always love his attitude about things….

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

…“I’ve already signed a contract for next year,” he said after shootaround at Arco Arena in preparation for tonight’s game against the Kings. “That’s been since, maybe, around the first of the year. I don’t remember what the date was on it. I never pay any attention to it. They offered it to me and I signed it.” “I didn’t need an announcement,” Sloan said. “Hell, it’s not a big deal to me. And I don’t know what it does. Either one of us can go the opposite direction. I’ve been around long enough and they’ve been around long enough to know if they want to get rid of me, that’s all they have to do.”

Mubarak outlasted Jerry Sloan… two days ago you couldn’t even get odds on that.

  • izzo

In honor, we should all spend the day calling people “f*cking c**ts” followed by “it’s okay. I’m old and folksy”.

  • vmcb

wow, I read the title as “Jerry Sloan to re-sign” and I thought to myself “duh, this was reported a few days ago…”. This is pretty monumental, though. He was a great coach in this L, he just couldn’t get it done.

  • Brahsef

I have a feeling without Sloan the Jazz will be bad for many many years. Sad day for the NBA, Sloan is a great coach…hate to see him leave.

  • robb

Jerry will do great coaching for another team. He’s the man.

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

The Jazz will be out of the playoffs for a long time.
    And what I forgot.
    ‘WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY’
No really. I want to know the reason.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Damn…..another team would be lucky to get him to lead their team.

  • T-Money

Wow. I think the players where starting to tune him out a little bit. Especially Deron.

  • joe

like i said who wants to play in utah, when they don’t pay their players good money. When former players start beating the jazz in your home court, thats when it starts to sink in. we can’t win like this. This coach deserves better.

  • Atsushi

    I’m really surprised.

Many GMs are rubbing their hands now…

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

If last night was his last as a coach, it’s fitting that it was against the team that retired his jersey so many years ago.

  • Cizzo

They might as well sell the team people it’s over n Utah… They let the whole starting line up leave in the offseason and Coach Sloan, who is a great Hall of Famer didn’t have any tangible personel…. He problaby don’t like coaching these crybaby ass AAUers anyway…. Im sure!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Definitely shocking news. One of the greatest coaches.

I read AK was in the office with Sloan and the GM too? Anyone have any other details other than what they’re going to say at the press conference?

jerry sloan had so much longevity and won for so long. With or without a title he was great

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    wait wait wait…
last I checked, Sloan hasn’t won a coach of the year, and now he’s gone?
this is totally out of the blues. bigger news than lebron signing with heat.

  • elrompeculosdeloslakers

I heard cleveland is looking for a coach with experience. All kidding aside, hey coach just retire and enjoy the rest of your time with family and grandkids, you have nothing to prove to anyone, your career speaks for it’s self, enjoy the rest of your life because you have earned it.

  • http://fouronesix-raptors.blogspot.com/ Fouronesix

Something definitely went on with management, now the assistant is stepping down too apparently?

I love Sloan too, class act and a helluva coach, but I can’t be the only person on this site that thinks its time for a change for both side? 23 years, a lot of regular season wins, but only 2 Finals appearances. He wouldn’t have lasted that long anywhere else. Byron Scott went to the finals twice and got fired the very next year. Its a true testament to the loyalty he was shown by the Jazz Owners and the loyalty he showed them when he probably could have left for bigger money. But its been a long time coming in my opinion.

  • Drew

He never won a chip either.

  • hoodsnake

I think him and Deron were bumping heads behind the scenes. Let’s hope this stays a rumour.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    According to Adrian Wajowihatelebronski –

Sloan’s relationship with point guard Deron Williams(notes) had grown progressively worse over the course of the season, league sources said, and the coach had tired of dealing with the team’s best player. The frustration escalated on Wednesday night when Sloan and Williams clashed in the locker room at halftime.

“He decided right there in halftime that he was done,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports. “He felt like ownership was listening more to Williams than they were to him anymore. He was done.”

Ya’ll need to follow this on twitter, it is sad, enlightening and funny all at the same time. Damn Jerry Sloan, I hope you are willing to coach another team and not just retire cause you are one of the greats.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

@Enigmatic: that’s a bad look on Deron. one who drove away a 23year-tenured Hall of Fame coach? heavy.

  • http://www.iowsports.com/ Blue

I hope he becomes a National TV commentator…that would definitely be must see TV!! As a die-hard Rockets fan, I salute you Coach Sloan…

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Deron better hope John Stockton and Karl Malone don’t find him and whoop his ass.
Jeff “Horny” Hornaceck can come too…
I just wrote that last part to have a reason to write “horny” on here. LOL

  • PistolPete1988

Wow. It a shame cause of the bulls he never got a ring. & the same bulls team but different generation sent him into retirement. Salute to 1 of the top coach off alltime.

  • karma

“I just wrote that last part to have a reason to write “horny” on here. LOL ”

    I just died laughing.

  • burnt_chicken

Incredible. One of the best! I bet he gets a few offers elsewhere, and it would be real interesting to see what he can do with another team.
