Knicks Add Gallinari to Offer for Carmelo Anthony

by Ryne Nelson

With the Nets and Nuggets having reached a “tentative agreement” on a trade, the Knicks have reportedly improved their offer to Denver for Carmelo Anthony.

According to Marc Spears, the Knicks’ offer now includes Danilo Gallinari, Ray Felton, Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry and a first-round pick to be acquired later. The Nuggets would send Carmelo, Chauncey Billups and “fillers.”

The proposed deal would send Gallinari, point guard Raymond Felton, forward Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry’s expiring contract and a first-round pick to the Nuggets for Anthony, point guard Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams.

The Knicks have been reluctant to give up Gallinari, but now appear willing to do so after the Nuggets assembled the framework of a blockbuster trade with the New Jersey Nets in recent days. One league source confirmed a New York Daily News report that Knicks owner Jim Dolan had met with Anthony in Los Angeles.

Dolan “is doing everything he can to get him,” the source said.

The New York Daily News reports that although Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni are not in favor of the trade, Knicks owner James Dolan could execute the deal as soon as today.

Dolan met with Melo on Thursday and the Knicks and Nuggets had a conference call yesterday. Mikhail Prokhorov released statement today stating that he has no plans to meet with Carmelo. Both the NY Times and Newsday report that Carmelo will not sign a contract extension if he is traded to the Nets.

All this is to say it’s likely that Melo will be a Knick before the February 24 deadline.

With All-Star, labor negotiations and the Carmelo Decision, the next 48 hours could be epic!

Damn giving up an arm and a leg for Melo? NYK still won’t win ish in the playoffs with an Amare/Melo frontcourt.

  • Sincere

With Amare and melo they will built a dynasty when they fill this roster out in one more year.can u image eastern final new York vs Miami game seven that’s if cp3 or Deron Williams run point

  • http://Gmail Dirty Frank

Could Melo switch teams @ halftime of the ASG if the trade goes through?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

They’re giving way too much for Melo. The Knicks will lose all depth if they do this…

  • Dan Corbin

Billups won’t go.. he will opt out and may end up in Miami.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Yeah I can understand people thinking: ‘They’re not going anywhere with 2 players on the roster’, well, maybe not right now, but the plan is building around those 2 all-stars. If Carmelo goes to the Nets (that means he agreed to sign an extension) the Knicks are not going to get him in the offseason (obviously), so they have to get him NOW. Don’t give up on the oppertunity to get Melo.

  • JVAL1

I honestly think this deal is stupid.. you give up ray felton who’s on the rise and is still young so has the time to progress and shipping out gallinari who’s come up big many times I just think its to much for a melo and billups

  • Elliot Forde

Sure they wont win this year, but with melo the knicks attract guys like deron williams and chris paul. And if anyone hasn’t noticed chauncey billups contract expires the same year those two become free agents.

  • http://www.streetmodifier.com Mustang Parts

I agree with Jahmai, let’s get Melo Now! there’s no guarantee we’ll get him later.

  • fourthree

Dayuuum. Gallo AND Chandler?! I dunno. IMO Melo’s THAT nice, but aren’t the Bockers givin’ up alot. The NY faithful will probably be sitting on the edge of thier seats the next couple of days.

  • Mel Dealcross

I agree. If Melo is that such a huge impact player, Denver should be in finals in all those years he has been with the team.
Basketball is a team game. You win with five players not with one, and of course good coaches, good bench role players.

  • RTG

Get Melo any which way you can. It’ll be sad to see Chandler, Felton and Gallinari go but it’s not like they’re irreplaceable. Set Amare and Carmelo and build around them.

Sure, they won’t win it all this season but wait ’til next year! Go Knicks!

  • add

i’d pull the trigger on this deal if i was the knicks, gettin melo and billups (an experienced player with some gas left in the tank), i just don’t see the big deal about gettin rid of danilo and chandler.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Ree Roe

Knicks still aren’t going to do anything special…

  • TRIMEGADON

to pull that kind of trade NY must be really sure about their future ending with the likes of either cp3 or dwill…but wasnt NY already a good team? guess corporate america works in funny ways…

  • Martey

The Knicks won’t lose all depth because they dont have any depth. D’Antoni plays six players in his rotation, seven tops. He tires his players out and leaves them prone to injury. Should Anthony comes to NY he will take Gallo’s position anyways. Gallo is inconsistent. Chandler is a good player but he can be replaced. I would be against the Knicks giving up Landry and Chandler, but they didnt. The only bad deal here is Felton because he has great chemistry with Amare, however the Knicks were still planning to go after the Deron/CP3 sweepstake in the summer and half the seasons’ gone already. Chauncey is a good replacement with playoff experience and he would form a splendid backup to CP3 or even a good tandem if they move him over to shooting guard. Eddy Curry hasnt played so he’s just a contract. Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams are good hustle type players like Rony Turiaf. Either way the Knicks can green light this trade. The Eastern Conference is weak enough this year that even with this trade they stay competitive for the playoffs

  • RT Firefly

Knicks will play with the Nuggets till the 24th, and then cancel any deal. Nuggets will be stuck with Melo, and the Knicks sign him next year when he walks to them as a free agent.

  • http://www.ebay.com Tariq

This is a bad trade for the Knicks. I would not give up Felton.

  • Harrison

Knicks need to make this trade. Who cares if we trade Galo in the deal, Melo is a SF, as is Galo it would be stupid to have them both on the roster Galo will make too much to be a back up especially considering how much of a game Melo plays, which is why Chandler is expendable. Felton has been great this season but Billups is just as good and will get guys open looks. We keep Fields, a rookie who has shown a lot AND can be an AFFORDABLE player to keep around Melo and Amare. Depending on the new agreement the league and PA make, maybe the knicks can make a run at Deron Williams or CP3, or maybe even Dwight Howard. Thats looking too much into the future though.

YOU CAN GET HUNDEREDS AND HUNDEREDS OF CHANDLERS AND FELTONS BUT THE CHANCE TO GET MELO DOESNT COME OFTEN.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Just realize, role players are really really important BUT they are replaceable, getting a superstar and arguably the best scorer in the league now or never? You have to pull the trigger. Reminds me of Cleveland not willing to part ways with JJ Hickson in a trade for Amare last All-Star weekend, just look where they’re now… LeBron is gone, Amare is bringing the funk back to MSG and JJ… is still JJ.

  • Charlie Tang

Both Gallo and Chandler are not dependable. Let them go. Carmelo is the future.

  • jose

One of ya’l mentioned it earlier, Billups won’t go if it happens(supposedly so it’s pretty much Ray-Fel,Gallo,Chandler(and curry, lol) for Melo if it happens

  • RAW

@ Mel Dealcross: Trust me, if you don’t follow the Nuggets like those of us in Denver do, I will tell you that Melo is an impact player. Before Melo Denver hadn’t been to the playoffs since 1993 when they upset Seattle. After we acquired Melo, we have been in the playoffs every year since. The problem is that Denver has not done a good job building players around Melo with the exception of Chauncey. Believe me if the Knicks pull the trigger on this deal, and are willing to build the team around him they will be in the playoffs even the finals many times within the next two to three years. I wouldn’t question whether or not he is an impact player, because he is and he has proved it! Personally, I will be sad to see him go. I hated the way that he was booed in the Pepsi Center he had trouble in the past yes, but he isn’t the same 19 year old kid from Syracuse any longer. Mello is a real class act now. He has handled this whole thing with true class unlike Lebron did. I am glad that he talked to Lebron about how to handle it. He has taken advice and gone with it. He is coachable and also a great athlete. I wish him the best and will always be a fan of Melo. Wish we could keep him!

  • Kas

Not a good deal for the Knicks, I like Felton over Billups on the Knicks

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

On a side note Balkman comes back to the team that cheered so loudly for him on draft day! Knicks still can’t escape the Isaiah Thomas legacy.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I’m looking forward to Melo, Smooth, and Kool coming to the Knicks, while at the same time keeping Muddy Fields and Mozgov on the Hudson. Next, the Knicks pick up Earl Barron for front court depth, and hope Kelenna Azubuike can be ready to be a 6th man by the time the real season starts – or perhaps flip his expiring contract for a 6th man. This is just the beginning. Next season is when the Knicks contend for a chip.

  • Bmerz

You guys are blind u should of saw this coming once mozgof stepping into the starting lineup .. It will be billups fields melo amare and mozgof with Douglas shawne Williams Turiaf Nd bill walker off the bench Knicks have plenty of depth but still a little shaky with big men other then amare but that’s been all season… Billups contract will be up after this season Nd the Knicks will have room to sign cp or dwills

  • Donatello

Damn, the knicks woulg give up way too much for Melo. Losing Gallinari OR Chandler is manageable, although it would hurt because they are highly talented. But Gallinari & Chandler?? I see Gallinari as Carmelo light anyway, they are the same type of player. All the Kinicks have to do is wait until summer, then they can sign Carmelo anyway, without losing depth. To throw up the roster now, with little time ahead wont get them anywhere. The only positive aspect is getting rid of Curry’s butt and that’s it.

  • jay rose

In case some of you forgot, the Knicks dont have a bench to help out if the trade goes through. Melo and STAT wont win any championships for NY unless they can get some help from their bench when they go to the bench.

  • brian king

The knicks have to make this deal. A player like Carmelo comes once in a lifetime. Carmelo is better than all them players put together. billups is better then felton, and would be better with those 2. Paul or williams, but i think paul. will be here soon. The knicks would be back now. If this trade doesn’t happen. Im no longer a knick fan.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

There’s isn’t a guarantee that he’ll sign in the summer? He literally doesn’t want to play for any other team, that’s pretty much a guarantee.

  • paul

Given up their team for Melo. Makes no sense.

  • riggs

the knicks should just have some balls and tell denver no, do the deal with the nets and see if carmelo would say yes (he wont). Youre giving up 3 of your damn starters for carmelo and a guy who went on record saying he doesnt want to leave denver. Stop letting denver play front office mind games letting the trade details with new jersey leak so you can sweeten up the deal smh.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

If this deal goes through, the Knicks won’t be a threat until MAYBE the summer after NEXT season.
Billups, Fields, Anthony, Stoudemire, Mozgov won’t strike any fear in the Celtics, Heat or Bulls.
Billups might be out after this season, and then who’s their starting PG if that happens? Toney Douglas?
I read someone say they can get CP or D Will after this season. Negative. They’re unrestricted free agents in 2012 offseason.
I read someone else say Billups can be CP or DWill’s backup if they sign with NY. Are you kidding me? Billups wanted to end his career with the Nuggets before he got dragged into this nonsense.
The Knicks would be a great team with let’s say, Amare, Melo and CP. But that can’t happen till 2012. Till then, they ain’t hurting nothing. Even if they do get Melo this year.
Also, I absolutely believe a O’Antoni-coached team can never, ever win a championship unless he somehow becomes more defensive-minded, but that’s like asking Eboy to wear a Kobe jersey.

  • MikeC.

I’m not totally against this trade. NY needs some scrappy role players like Balkman. I’d prefer to keep Felton and Billups out of it. Then it works for me.

  • HAMMER

    “Desperation is a stinky cologne”

  • HAMMER

Or how bout “I got these cheeseburgers man. I’ll suck your d*ck man”

  • Dagger

Seems pretty simple to me. Can the Knicks win a championship with their current young core? No. Could they win one building around Melo and Amare? In spite of their defensive liabilities, maybe. Don’t forget Billups and Balkman would be sent along as well. I’d do this trade.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

NOOOOOOOOO. Felton is too valuable. And I’d h@te to see both Chandler and Gallinari go. This somewhat guts the Knicks.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

HOWEVER, this trade works if Toney Douglas is given more minutes–and even a future starting role once Billups either leaves via free agency or chooses to retire (hopefully none of these). I’m glad I don’t see Douglas’ name in any of these trade rumors.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Damn. I was wary of these deal for a while but remember, the Knicks aren’t JUST getting Melo. They’re getting a highly capable, former All-Star, former Finals MVP in Chauncey Billups too. They’re getting the best two players the Nuggets have to offer–the duo that sent them to the Western Conference Finals a few years ago. This deal is looking pretty decent; the only question mark is whether Billups wants to stay or not. And if he doesn’t, again, TONEY DOUGLAS needs the starting nod.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I just wish Knicks could keep Felton and let Billups stay with Nuggets then the trade is better. Nuggets have Ty Lawson, they really don’t need Felton. Who cares about Chandler and Gallo, they are replaceable. Felton was working out with Knicks. Nuggets management should keep Billups and just take Chandler and Gallo with picks/curry contract. Knicks will be allright in the long run, People they are only 2 games above.500, its not like they are killing in the league right now anyway. BOOK IT!!

  • riggs

toney douglas cannot play point in this system, he has messed up the flow of the offensive break everytime he’s been running point. He’s a good defensive minded PG but if chauncey doesnt want to play for NYK then theyre screwed.

  • riggs

@mikeC: Balkman WAS with the knicks, and he stuck up the joint.

  • http://youtube/user/Uncle05Sam Earl

    GO. KNOCKS. BABY.

  • dubb100

Chandler’s going away at the end of the season no matter what. Gallo is inconsistent trash when it really comes down to it. Feltons not worth not getting Melo. Amare and Melo are 2 of the top 2 best basketball players in the world. Who wouldnt except less to play in the worlds most famous arena and play with to aces in the league? Denvers team was trash.. overrated lazy K Mart streaky Jr smith.. Nene not good enough to carry a team in the playoffs… A.I. (WHEN THERE) was a ball hog bum… Amare will carry the load when Melos having fout trouble or injuried, something the losers in Denver couldnt do.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ riggs: Well he hasn’t had much playing time in the first place. He can do it. He has good court vision, he’s quick, and he’s athletic. And he can shoot. Plus, D’Antoni hasn’t had a defensive-minded point guard… Well, ever. That’s a good thing. Knicks will be fine with Douglas.

  • O

I agree. If Felton was to stay put or if Chauncy wanted to play with the Knicks, i’d be hype. But we’re letting Felton – who loves playing in NY – go, and Chauncy has said he would want a buyout and move down to South Beach and hop on those Big 3 nuts. But Melo has “said” that if the Knicks don’t make an attempt to trade for him, then he’d sign with Jersey. Denver is said to want Felton to use as trade bait in the off season. I feel for my man Ray.

  • HAMMER

Leave it up 2 dub100 2 supply us w/jokes. “Amare and Melo are 2 of the top 2 best basketball players in the world”. Haha! What a laughable concept

  • JoeMaMa

I honestly feel like the biggest loss for the Nuggets is Billups. They were going to lose Anthony anyway, but Billups figured to end his career in his home state, go on to the front office, and be a community ambassador. Melo is the flash, the star…but Billups is the leader, the strength of the franchise. Don’t get me wrong, Melo is THE GUY, but losing Billups will sting Denver a lot more than people are letting on.
