Kobe on Lakers Criticism: ‘I Don’t Give a Sh*t’

Due to their lackluster play this season, the Lakers have heard criticism from just about everyone — fans, media, and even former Laker greats like Jerry West and Magic Johnson. Kobe Bryant isn’t trying to hear any of it. ESPN reports: ‘Don’t know, don’t care,’ Kobe Bryant said when asked if the team was being criticized too harshly. ‘People that criticize, they can all kiss my ass. I don’t give a s—. I really don’t. I keep the train moving. We’re gonna keep on moving and in June, they’ll say nothing. For now, it’s good talk.’”

    Sounds good…

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Shout out to Dave Johnson.

  • Eric

    I don’t give a s*** that Kobe don’t give a s*** and he can kiss MY ass.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Why does Kobe curse so much in interviews? He, Shaq and KG really don’t care anymore about decorum and it’s bothersome.

  • Mike From Spain

KG not caring about decorum is the least of his issues

  • Double J

In a day and age like today, it’s actually refreshing to see players break out of this buttoned-up white boy look these days. These players are real and I love them for it, well besides KG, dude is just crazy.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Allen:
My take on it is that Kobe has been unhappy for a while, now. And, I’m talking about overall happiness. He’s had plenty of drama in his life. It’s like he’s missing something, you know?
Shaq seems bitter to me, and Garnett has generally sounded crazy in interviews ever since he was in Minnesota. Although, it does sound like he has less etiquette than earlier in his career.

  • memyselfand9

@ allenp: because he’s so coool.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    “Buttoned up white boy”…
    I’ll leave it alone.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I would if I was you Phil. That was a dumb comment…………

  • The D Train

Ma man the bean. i like how lebron is spose to be the “bad” guy in the nba and kobe not so much anymore but kobe literally does give a sh*t. yet lebron is always correcting his words and trying to be all PC. ha awesome…

  • Double J

So has everyone changed their opinion of the NBA? Has the absence of AI truly altered our belief system of individuality? What happened to the outright disrupt that the dress-code brought upon us? Seriously guys.

  • T-Money

Doesn’t really bother me but I think it would if I had a young child looking up to KG or Kobe. The not-giving-a-f-ck-about-nothing attitude rarely works in life unless you’re truly irreplaceable in your line of work. That’s not an example I’d like a kid to follow. MJ had a lot of flaws but he was always careful about how he carried himself in the public sphere and in front of cameras. I think that’s part of the job as an ambassador for basketball.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

The dress code brought disrupt unto you?

  • Double J

I must be the oldest commenter here if I’m the only guy that remembers the shame and mockery that the dress code brought back in the day. Players lost their identity.

  • riggs

“and in June, they’ll say nothing.” because they will be proven right kobe.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Players lost their identity?
What was their identity before the dress code?

  • vtrobot

“Magic who?” It doesn’t get any more buttoned up than that fashion shoot he did.

  • http://twitter.com/pepemiwe PepeMiwe

hey kobe.. Are You MAD? ahahahahaha fukin LOSER!

  • fruizm

i hate kobe but i cant lie……more players should have that type of confidence!

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I’m down ten-toes wit’cha, Bean. Decorum my a$$. Kobe has earned the right to say what he feels. He’s a basketball player, that’s it. If your kids look up to him for his on-court play, great. But you’re responsible for raising your own kids and teaching them right from wrong.
    Gone…

  • Red Star

Kobe knows it’s true and that’s why he is so pissed! If it was all good in Laker land he wouldn’t have called out Odom and Gasol!

Normally Kobe wouldn’t fall for something like that so they must have caught him at the wrong time! Better yet the right time! He rarely says what he truly feels anymore but if you catch him at the right time..

Notice how he said I keep the train moving? He’s taking it personally and he should! Kobe doesn’t like to be disrespected. Don’t know don’t care? Just like he didn’t care when Jerry West said LeBron surpassed him!?!

I’m a huge Laker fan and I’ve been critising them all year long because they are not playing to their potential. The hunger is gone! Not for Kobe but it is for the rest of the Lakers!

I love ya Kobe but I’m not kissing your ass! Sorry!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I just think that cursing is a sign of a poor vocabulary, and it’s not something you should do in professional conversation. Personal opinion. It’s not about the babies or the children for me, it’s just that when you curse all the time it’s like you don’t have the words to express your feelings without resorting to profanity. And that’s a shame when you’re a 30+ year old man. Shaq is almost 40.
When I was a child I behaved as a child, when I became a man, I put aways childish things.

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

kobe, kg, shaq has ut in enough work and made enough money where they can say whatever they want. They already have there fans and fame so they are not worried about that anymore. i like it, i like to see real human emotions, not some script reading punk.

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

i feel you kobe shake the haters off. Cuz how many title did jerry west win on a LOADED team? 1. And what did Magic do in his career after the age of 30? Not much at all. so homey keep balling and you and the lakers go and get this 3 peat, and your second 3 peat

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

allenp nice reference to corinthians. but curse word also shows emotion. and i look at them as adverbs so its two side to the coin.

  • karma

    a) Kobe has been speaking his mind more and more lately. I think he’s at the point where he’s not doing it to be “hip” like in his younger days when he swore for no reason or to be political and polite (like he did after his image took a hit. At this point, he is the game’s most marketable player, and has been since about 2006. He has a fistful of rings and has been around the media since he was 17. So when he says he does not give a crap, I believe him. The one thing I don’t like though is him taking shots at Shaq….after game 7 was fine, but he just took another one on the Conan o Brien show recently.

  • karma

And allenp, if you’ve ever seen a Kobe interview (not on ESPN), you would know he’s a really articulate and well-spoken person. The guy has diction that you don’t expect from most superstar athletes.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Fake tough-guy.

  • T-Money

Bryan Crawford: Cursing for no reason bothers me from everybody (co-workers, friends, etc.). Why should I feel any different for an athlete? Of course he has the right to say what he wants. Him saying that he doesn’t care about critics is not the issue. He just doesn’t have to swear in every sentence. I really don’t understand what wanting athletes not to swear in front of the cameras (and think about it, who else BUT athletes swear in front of cameras?)has to do with taking responsibilities for raising your kids. Anyways.

  • karma

Yes, because saying “I don’t give a sh*t” is being tough, how?

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Eff it.
    LONG… LIVE… THE KING!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Because if he had class he would say ” I really don’t care” or “I can’t be bothered with what anyone else thinks of me or my team”. Dude has always tried to portray himself as being hard. Dude’s as hard as a marshmallow Peep.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I do like his “wait till June” comment though. He’s the two-time defending champion…..he’s got THAT right without question.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Kobe would fck your old ass up Eboy.

  • karma

Eboy, its not as if the guy swears whenever this question is asked. He’s been diplomatic about it in the past, but in the context of this interview, he was already agitated cause reporters were constantly asking about trade rumors when he told them not to ask him about it. Before this question, he says “stop asking me about gossip”, and the reporter asks him the question anyway, so he responds out of frustration. It has nothing to do with his level of being tough, its just agitating to have to answer questions that you’ve answer 20x in the same session but worded differently. Even if Lebron were to say something like this (rather than being diplomatic), I would applaud it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

karma, dude’s a brand. A brand that makes a ton of money and is rolling out a new shoe and clothing line. Act like it. It’s not asking alot. He’s been analyzed since he’s 17. All Ball….unless Kobe is quicker then my 9, you (and he) would have life f*cked up with that assumption.

  • robb

@ karma Exactly. Reporters are a pain in the *ss. “He said this, they said that, have you heard this?” it sounded more like : “gtfoh this ain’t E! news”

  • Gman

imma agree with Double J on the dress code thing.

  • karma

What does being a brand have to do with it? Reporters want honest answers, no? They want soundbites? They got a soundbite. Being a brand is more so reflected in his public appeal overall, not a small-scale comment from a practice in Feburary that no one is going to know abou or care about other than hardcore hook junkies.

  • elmaar

I don’t like kobe, but what he said on the conan o’brien show was not a shot at shaq by any means

  • karma

I meant it as in keep his name out of his mouth. Kobe looks petty while Shaq’s singing his praises. Take jabs at him during the hall-of-fame speech…he went from 2004-2010 without taking jabs at him, why start now?

  • Gman

@ “I just think that cursing is a sign of a poor vocabulary”

Thats just… not true. Sometimes cursing is the only way to get a point or a feeling across.

If someone bugs you and you say”Please stop”, it probably wont, as opposed to “get f$$$ outta my face bi@t$h” LOL

  • robb

@Eboy just because he’s a brand doesn’t mean he can’t get frustrated. Everybody snaps sometimes. It’s stupid to think you must bare all this media cr@p just because you are rich and famous.

  • karma

Handling the media is a part of his job, so I can’t say that he shouldn’t be used to it. But at the same time, he’s not a “fake tough guy” as Eboy has implied because he snaps in a media setting. He didn’t even snap on the reporter, he expressed his frustration at the reporter through his soundbite, which is what reporters want.

  • unrel

eboy… your 9?.. i hope you’re talking about shoe size.. cause if you’re talking about gun-play.. that’s just lame.. it’s the internet, homie.. durant would have something to say about that comment..

  • T-Money

AllBall is a punk. Let him live in his own bubble.

  • karma

Also, Eboy, you kinda killed you own credibility of calling Kobe a “fake tough guy” when you’re talking about pulling out .9′s on the internet. That’s a no-no.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    lol, T-Money, why am I ‘a punk’?
Because I said Kobe would fck Eboy up? You don’t need to defend him, I was just being confrontational for the sake of it, and meant nothing by it.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    lol, T-Money, why am I a ‘punk’?
I was kidding with Eboy, he probably knew that, you don’t need to defend him.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Apologies for double post. Didn’t think they were coming through.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Man, I’m stating fact. You can criticize all you like. In my state, you’ve got that right…by law. I would never shoot Kobe…stop the silliness (as if that would happen in the real world, please)but down here…if you’re threatened…you can act. Say what you want, but that’s how sh*t goes when you get “old” and tire of throwing hands. I really wasn’t trying to be a fake tough-guy. That’s reality in Florida.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

AllBall….I had no worries with your comment.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Yeah, I know, E. I say something along those lines to you most days.
I think people have over reacted to your gun comment. It’s going to be Filipino Simpleton all over again.
T-Money, are you just going to do a hit and run on me?

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Yawn* wake me up in June. Well, wake me up to see Blake Griffin’s dunk contest performance, too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I don’t get it. But whatever….this was about Kobe and not about some imaginary commenter. Let’s put it like this….would David Robinson, Ray Allen, Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, guys of that “good guy” nature ever approach an interviewer like this? No. Why, ’cause they’ve got “it” like that. Shaq always tries to be funny with his insults if he goes that route. Michael and Lebron had/have a similar style of saying almost robotic responses to the majority of questions they were/are asked. Kobe, back in the day, never was this way…yet in the last season or two has morphed into this type of terse response type guy. It’s forced. If you can’t see it, then you haven’t paid attention to the guy as well as some of you claim to. It doesn’t change the way he plays the game or matters to him in the slightest, but as a perception tool, it doesn’t help to the casual fan who may read it, coming from, supposedly, the games best player.

  • LakeShow

EBOY SAID HE’D KILL KOBE IF GIVEN THE CHANCE.. LOL. WTF DOOD IS F***KED UPPP

  • vtrobot

    f*ck cursing.

Ha ha, I feel where Eboy’s coming from with that whole gun thing.
Here in Alaska, we WILL shoot your ass. Kobe or not. LOL
And co-sign AllenP about the whole people who curse too much not being able to express themselves adequetly without cursing thing. I’m trying to get there myself. I respect people a whole lot more when they can get their emotions out without just saying “f*ck this” and “f*ck you”.

  • the nerve

fuk dat. I’ll clap kobes ass. twice

  • Heals

I’m still laughing at the “buttoned-up white boy” post, wow Double J what a fresh take on things…

    GMan
There are more than enough words out there that you don’t have to resort to profanity to let someone know you’re angry.
Quite honestly, it’s just the easy way out.
But, it’s not like Kobe or anybody else has to care what I think. All combined, Kobe, Shaq and KG have made nearly three quarters of a billion dollars in their careers, so they don’t have to worry about what most people think.
But, I do find it problematic, and childish. I equate adulthood with abandoning certain behaviors, like using profanity in general conversation to make a point.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Allen, I agree to a point. It is childish and I try not to curse in casual conversations because it hints at stupidity. But I also hoop probably 3-5 times a week and I don’t think I’ve ever been pleasant on the court. After a game, a player still has that built up animosity and although they should keep their cool and realize it’s just another interview, sometimes people are people.

That’s right Kobe, stay focus, the end is not here yet and they should not judge anything before the appoint time. Kobe and Lamar seems to be the only ones on that team that has to come to play this season.

    Lakers need another scorer.

“Do I come to your job and smack the broom out your hand?!”

  • Red Star

Lakers fans we are in for a treat tonight!!! When Kobe is pissed he is unstoppable and he is clearly pissed!
The poor Spurs are going to be wondering what they did to deserve such a beat down!
    BTW
Kobe swears when he is pissed just like the rest of us! He typically down plays things to the media meanwhile he is stewing inside. When he gets asked the same question too often or the time isn’t approprate he’ll lose it! This is the Kobe I’ve come to know love! When he has that scowl look on his face watch out because he’s out for blood!
    Lakers fans rejoice!!!

The Seed…how can you say don’t listen if you don’t know the language is coming? Look people, it’s about being professional. The dress code, the not swearing in interviews and all that, it’s all part of it. Michael Jordan didn’t allow reporters in until he had showered and was back in his suit. That’s how it should be. These gangsta wannabes look ridiculous in their sweats or jeans and a hoodie. As for the language, they should be cognizant of the fact that kids are watching and do look up to them. Obviously sometimes people slip and catch themselves, but when it’s “I don’t give a sh*t”, he’s doing it on purpose

  • flipnoyce

Classless, Kobe was spoon fed on a silver platter since the day he was born! That’s why I never liked the guy, every time he respond to a question there’s this arrogant way he constantly respond.”fake tough guy” When June comes around lets see if San Antonio or the Thunder doesn’t knock your team down. I’m really hoping for a rematch against my C’s unless otherwise……health is the issue!

  • Red Star

I really expected the Lakers the kill the Spurs! I thought Kobe would go off on them but it didn’t go down that way! Man WTF!!!

Lol… The biggest mistake the forefathers made in drafting up the constitution was adding guns to the list of fundamental freedoms. As if the right to pack heat is as important as the right to free speech… BS.

  • Mary B L

All of you can like and dislike whoever you so chose and for whatever reasons. None of you are playing NBA Ball. You see people and hear people every single day using profanity. Do you call any of them out and say all that you say about Kobe. Who hasn’t used a word of profanity in their lifetime or thought about it or used it in a whisper?
Most kids use profanity better than any adults I have ever heard. By the way, Who decided what words were profanity and what words are not. I remember when the word GAY meant you were HAPPY. How do we know Shirt shouldn’t be a bad word? But if you leave out the R we got a profanity word, who decided that?
