Mark Cuban Would Trade for ‘Melo Without Extension

The biggest sticking point during the whole Melo-Drama has been whether or not he’d sign a contract extension with whatever team the Nuggets trade him to. According to Mark Cuban, however, the extension guarantee isn’t a big road block if Denver wants to basically give him away. From the NY Post: “Without speaking about Anthony by name, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said yesterday at the Garden that Dallas would be willing to acquire a player of that caliber as a free-agent-to-be rental ”Yeah, in a heartbeat. Because then it’s up to me to try to convince them to stay,’ Cuban said. ‘If everybody wants to give off a great player, we’re always going to try to be opportunistic. But those calls typically aren’t made. Those happen once every five years or so.’ Along with the Knicks, Nets and Rockets, Dallas is interested in Anthony, and Houston also has been mentioned as a rental option. Cuban wouldn’t reveal the Mavericks’ interest in Anthony. ‘I can’t talk about other teams’ players, but I’m always trying to be opportunistic,’ Cuban said. ‘If someone wanted to offer me a perennial All-Star for a second-round pick, I’m going to say yes.’ In the interim, Cuban cracked that he’s enjoying the fact that the Anthony saga could be distracting the Nuggets. ‘I feel bad for [new Denver owner] Josh Kroenke,’ Cuban said. ‘He just comes in to take over and all of a sudden he has to deal with all this. He’ll figure it out. Anything that distracts other teams in our conference, that’s good. I want every player and every other team to revolt.’”

Melo could make the diference between the Mavs being a contender to the Mavs being a championship favorite. It’d be worth having him as a rent-a-player.

Good point Wayno but I’d argue that the Celtics would still whip that ass.

Kidd, Melo, Dirk with Tyson Chandler holding it down in the post. Then Jet coming off the bench, Shawn MArion still wreaking a little bit of havoc and Peja knocking em down from deep. If this happens and Dallas only gives up picks, cash and Roddy…Mavs could be special.

If the Mavs win a chip, or even get close with Melo, he’d probably stay. I’m guessing that’s Cuban’s reasoning.

Let this happen! If we got him he replaces caron easily and gives us the 1-2 scoring punch we’ve never really had since finley. Mavs are already 9 deep and it would finally end the brian cardinal sightings!

It would be hard to find any contending team that wouldn’t agree to ‘rent’ Melo for only a second-round pick. If Melo is ‘set’ on going to NYC for his family, that’s one thing. But if it’s really more about winning, then it’s hard to pass up a chance to stay in Dallas a few years while Dirk et. al. still have something left in the tank.

yeah, but why would nuggets just trade melo for a 2nd round pick? that would make no sense on any level. how’s having a second round pick better than just losing him through free agency? think of the lost revenue the nuggets will have for the rest of the season and playoffs.

@ toinefan88 – actually, depth and talent-wise, that would make Dallas one of the few teams comparable to the Celtics…they may not have the same chemistry, but the telent and depth would most certainly be at or above the level of the Celts.

Of COURSE cuban would do that. He also gave Brendan “1-minute” Haywood a monster contract. Nuggs aren’t THAT desperate…are they?

Those happen once every five years or so. Yup cough Pau Gasol cough!

i’ve been sayin Dallas is in the running for Melo since September. Caron Butler getting Hurt, and Cuban saying Roddy was almost untouchable pretty much kill any possibility of that though

thats what i was thinkin.. cuban is by far my favorite nba owner out there.. dude is so enthusiastic about his job and of course if the mavs aquired anthony they would be big time contenders and even if he only stayed for the rest of this season (decideding to sign on with the knicks next season) then that would probably be the best shot at the title that the mavs will have for years to come and i believe cuban knows this.. and hell, if the mavs have some good success then maybe melo would decide to stay.. but honestly i can see him leaving for the knicks who would be just as good (if not better) with him as the mavs are and also because both teams are really good but the mavs are much older and will not be playing near as great in the next couple of years (with the exception of roddy) as where the knicks are full of young talent and are only looking to get better.. only time will tell

  • http://google c_cantrell

^nbk.. cuban said that unless he could an all-star in return (insert carmelo anthony) then roddy was untouchable

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

except he would be giving up Roddy and the future for a one year shot at a title that your team is likely going to need more time to win

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Yeah, because having Carmelo Anthony play thirty games before the play-offs is going to be what puts the Mavs into contention. Please.

Jerry West is a Laker for life.

JW: Yeah sure, I will take a younger and less talented version plus a couple of piles of crap for one of the best big men of late. then we could maybe make some ground on those damn Shamrocks.

As for the Mavericks … they dont play enough D. Caron was a massive loss to any chance of a deep playoff run.

    Make it happen Mark Cuban.

  • Mike From Spain

Dirk deserves his championship, Melo does not seem to have a better shot at one. I would hope that it makes sense for the nuggets

@the dude: you obviously haven’t been following or watching the mavs
