Nets Back in Carmelo Anthony Sweepstakes

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Less than a month ago, New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov swooped in from Russia, and dramatically called off all negotiations for his team to land Carmelo Anthony. He said the Nets were no longer interested; the chase had simply become too big a headache.

It turns out Prokhorov wasn’t being entirely truthful, according to the latest reports.

Multiple media outlets have sources claiming that New Jersey is still very much in the business of acquiring ‘Melo, and with the trade dealing looming ever larger, the pressure is getting cranked up.

The Bergen Record reports that the Nets have their eye on more than just Anthony:

With a week to go before the trade deadline, the Nets and Nuggets are talking Carmelo Anthony again. But the Nets have other potential deals in the works.

They have been unhappy with Devin Harris’ level of play and commitment to the team lately and are trying to move him, with Portland a possible destination. The Nets and Blazers have exchanged trade proposals and still are discussing a deal. Harris and veteran point guard Andre Miller are the main pieces, but more players are involved, multiple NBA sources said. It’s doubtful the Nets will trade Harris, who turns 28 in two weeks, straight up for Miller, who turns 35 next month.

For what it’s worth, the conventional wisdom remains that New York is still the leading candidate to acquire Carmelo Anthony from Denver.

The NBA’s trade deadline is exactly one week away. You can expect this story to change multiple times over that time period. Brace yourselves.

Denver is a joke. They’re now asking NY to give up Chandler, Gallo, Felton, Fields, Mozgov AND a pick.

  • Yesse

Can’t these guys just make up their mind?

  • Riggs

seriously this is all denvers front office fault, theyre asking for ridiculous deals and when the other team rejects it, they place the blame on them. I hope carmelo plays the rest of the season out and leave them with nothing to show for their stupidity.

  • robb

don’t care, just stop talking about Melo, please.

  • NJ4Life

Denver is out of their minds. They wanted Harris, Favors, Morrow, James, and 3 first round picks from NJ. And they wanted us to take back Chauncey, Al Harrington, and Balkman. Now they want Chandler, Gallo, Felton, Fields, Mozgov a and first rounder from NY. Nobody is going to want to deal with Denver once Melo’s gone.

Denver is so full of ish.

  • miami6MVP

seriously this is killing carmelos rep and the nuggets this needs to be done. stop withevery rumor until nba.com or someone reports he is on the move. ridiculous.

@miami6MVP – Carmelo can’t control the rumors spun by the sports journalist, bloggers and tweeters. All Carmelo can do is control what he does on the basketball court, and he’s not once quit on the Nuggets. The fact of the matter is Carmelo has just as much right as LeBron, Bosh, Wade et al, when it comes to deciding where he wants to play when entering his next big contract. If this were only about money, Carmelo likely would’ve already signed the extension to stay in Denver – or been traded to the Nets. Bottom line, Carmelo has been patient and professional during the course of the 2010-11 season thus far, one in which he’s lost a sister. In my opinion, his “rep” has become better, not worse.

  • RunNGun

Carmelo’s only going one place and that’s MINNESOTA and it’s for Kevin Love, Jonny Flynn, and the UTAH and MEMPHIS first round picks. Then everyone woke up… lmao

If NYK trades everybody for Melo and billups, they’d still be fine. Billups is a huge upgrade over Felton, and Chandler won’t get any PT with Melo there anyway. Billups, Melo, and Stoudamire would be worth 10 more wins than their current lineup. As far as teh Nets are concerned, they suck, they might as well bring in Melo to sell some tix and pay for heating in their arena.

    OH MY F*CKING GOODNESS STOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Burn the Land

So its crazy to say but with the Utah Jazz struggling with Dwill and generally. A JAZZ NETS deal with a swap of Lopez and Harris for Dwill and Kirilenkos massive expiring contract sounds like a good deal. Nets get a Russian and a franchise player. Jazz get a good guard and a traditional skilled bigman (which they have never had). Thoughts?

  • Riggs

@BAkers-dozen: what are you talking about? feltons numbers > chanunceys this year. They were talking about felton being an all-star this year, when have you heard that before? chauncey is on the decline and youre gutting your whole team for just one player. they would be worse by far if they pulled that trade.

  • Kourtney

Miller needs to stay in Portland. He is a great point guard and does really well with the Blazers set up. Im a true blazer fan and with the way they r looking right now he needs to stay. We dont need Harris- we dont need anybody.

  • Kourtney

@ Burn the land.I would say that sounds like a deal. Did you come up with that yourself?

Denver’s front office is showing their lack of experience.. What a ridiculous trade limbo if they keep him after this they deserve to lose him for nothing

  • LA Huey

    co-sign Hossy

  • O

Word to Riggs, I really hope Melo sticks it to Denver by saying he doesn’t want to get traded and just leaves at the end of the year. Denver’s front office is trying like hell to gut the Knicks roster so that Melo won’t have anyone to play with except Stat. I hope he sees this and sh*ts on them by gutting out the rest of the year and bouncing to MSG.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Greatness

The Nets and Nuggets are discussing a deal that would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Melvin Ely, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams to the Nets for Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round draft picks.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Denver if trading with Nets, should only want one player back and picks. Nuggets should want Brook Lopez, maybe Favors and 2 1st round picks for Melo. Anything else from Nets is uncivilized!!!

  • tavoris

Chauncey is 35…at this point, the only person he’s an upgrade over is Mike Conley (because Conley STILL sucks).
