Post Up: DRose Goes Off

Bulls down Spurs in Chi-Town; Mavs defeat Suns.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Chicago 109, San Antonio 99

With chants of “MVP! MVP!” raining down from all angles, Derrick Rose did everything in his power to live up to those words, scoring 42 points and leading the Bulls over the League-best Spurs at home. DRose did it all: got to the hole at will, distributed the ball (8 dimes), provided efficiency from the line (6-6), and, most importantly, converted big bucket after big bucket as Chicago earned the W. The Bulls shot 53.8 percent from the field, and onlookers learned what it takes to beat the Spurs: an MVP-like performance from a superstar and a well-rounded, super-efficient effort from the role players. That too much to ask, everyone else?

Dallas 112, Phoenix 106

This matchup might’ve been a lot more entertaining over most of the last half-decade than it was yesterday, but these two still battled back-and-forth and provided some solid Thursday night, pre-All-Star fodder. The Mavs held onto a single-digit lead in the final few minutes, snatching the win and upping their record to 40-16. Dirk Nowitzki, apparently inspired by Derrick Rose, also put up an MVP-caliber performance, dropping 35 points (though he grabbed only 1 rebound), as Dallas picked up its third straight victory and will take some positive momentum into the break. For the Suns, Steve Nash had 15 points and 14 dimes, and I ask you, SLAM Fam: What do the Suns do with Stevie? Is he really worth holding onto, over trading him out for some youth/Draft picks and just re-building already?

Last Call: No wild highlights from last night, so I’ll wrap this up with the following: Trust me, you’re gonna want to stay around these parts for the next few days. We’ll have recaps of all the best events, live-blogs of the games/competitions each night, plus much, much more. See y’all next week.

rose put on a show last night, i can’t see how anyone can complain about his performance. and if this win over the spurs isn’t enough to convince people that the bulls are a problem for everyone else in the league, y’all are sleepin, for real.

airs is right. after last night, i believe in the bulls. they’re gonna be a tough out.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Will Spurs fans use the “we’re tired from a long road trip” excuse? Nice game from the Bulls….they’ve officially moved past the Magic into the top three of the East, regardless of record.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

    Derrick Rose is excellent.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Stepfan

D rose was showing out last night. This team is already tough, just wait till Noah comes back. No team in the East is going want to see this squad. And quick question what happened to all the JR Smith rumors about him going to the Chi? I still think the bulls need one more piece.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Trade Nash for Capspace. No one is giving up a pick for him right now. The only contender that has any use for him is Atlanta and they have no young guys to offer. I’d do Crawford for Nash straight up.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Uhm….there’s another contender than can use him in Miami.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

The East is crazy, I think the Bulls are the only team that can beat the Celtics in a series if they’re all healthy, but I don’t they can beat the Heat in a series.

F that Eboy. Save that sh*t for NBA2k11.

  • Playa

First…. DRose is now my pick for MVP…

  • Fat Lever

Who does Miami have outside of the 3 that anyone would want? Miami’s draft picks aren’t worth ish for the next few years, because they’re going to be in the top 5 teams in the league consistently. Riles will need to either channel his inner RC Buford and find talent out of other places or continue to convince vets to come in and sign for less.

  • Fat Lever

Unless they have other teams picks from other trades, which I’m not aware of.

  • robb

Rose, man what a player. He’s got it, he’s got the killer instinct, and he’s got the work ethics, athleticism, determination and he’s getting a better understanding of his position. The sky is the limit for this guy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

MVP!MVP!MVP! Everybody can eat a big bag of sh*t! (Will Ferrel ©) Drose is awesome.

Maybe Young Money will figure out how to spell his name…

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

as a Spurs fan, it’s just another game…who’s next??

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

    ..but gat dang..DERRICK!!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Commenter formerly known as Kap

If D-Rose is still not the favorite for MVP then its a damn shame.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That was a cold blooded 40. Although, it wasn’t great that he gave up like 26 on 50 percent shooting to TP.
But man, Rose was killing the Spurs, who do not play defense like they used to at all. He was living in the lane, the Bulls were making good interior passes, and they were crashing the boards hard. The Spurs were trying to get back in the game with scoring, not stops, which is the exact opposite of how they used to handle their business.
I don’t know about this Spurs team at all.
And, if Boston, Miami and Chicago play up to their full potentials, the ranking looks like 1. Miami 2. Boston 3. Chicago.
If they play the way they’ve been playing this season it looks like:
    1. Boston 2. Miami 3. Chicago
If Miami gets the big head its looks like:
    1. Boston 2. Chicago 3. Miami.

  • http://slamonline.com The Commenter formerly known as Kap

That’s what Ive been saying about the Spurs all year. They are the new Phoenix Suns and I think LA won’t have any trouble with them come playoff time. Fast-breaking, 3pt shooting teams don’t translate well to playoffs especially since Duncan has struggled mightily against the Lakers this season.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Chicago has stepped into Orlando’s spot at #3 in the East IMO as well, I am still excited about the prospects of an Atlanta v Chicago first round, but Chicago NYK will be fun just for the fact that Rose might average 35+ for the series.

  • http://bulls.com airs

and Stepfan is right. Once Noah comes back, the Bulls could be looking at first seed in the East real soon.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Miami should resign Wayne Simien or Sean May to give them a post presence…

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Why does Barkley have to say “Lebron is the best player on the planet” repeatedly when he talks about Lebron?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I really don’t think SA is gonna go deep in the playoffs. They aren’t very good defensively and they are the new Phoenix Suns which doesn’t translate well into postseason. Also, Duncan has really struggled against LA in the two games they played this year. If they are not making their 3′s then they have no chance to beat OKC and definitely not LA.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Did you just mention Wayne Simien and Sean May and the words “post presence” in the same sentence?
    Wow.
    WOW.
You need like a three day break from commenting to contemplate the ridiculousness of that position.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Might as well go get Mateen Cleaves and Miles Simon to shore up your guard spots in your second unit lmao

  • JTaylor21

He does it remind all those laker sheeps watching who the best player really is.

  • Wall Ball

I’m glad the haters on both coast have finally accepted the fact that what “The ONE” D-Rose, has cannot be taught. That “Killa” as we say in the Chi is innate. Like Pop said, he’s not beating on his chest when he does it. He wants to take the last shot unlike Lebron. The debate is over and finally put to rest. Don’t mention D-Rose in the best point guard debate anymore. He has now graduated into the best player in the league debate. He’s not even in his prime yet. He’s only getting started…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

See, Wall Ball is going over the line. Dammit, there is always somebody who does that.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Wall Ball has been up since the game ended last night, drinking absinthe

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@Allenp…I was kidding and also showing how Riley doesn’t draft well with his selection over the years highlighted with the selection of Simien.
@jtaylor…it gets to a point where its annoying and makes Barkley look like he has a man crush on Bron. I thought analysts were suppose to be bias also.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kap – Don’t you think Barkley might do it because there are so many people in the world blinded by there own illogical obsession with players and teams that he probably has to hear about how Kobe or Rose or Durant or whoever are the best player in the league day after day. Bron has been the best individual basketball player in the NBA for a while now, whether you like or accept it or not, which for whatever weird reason, most fans don’t.

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

@Kap..Lakers are 0-2 against the Spurs right now (eventhough Tim struggled as you say). It’s the Spurs that’s been beating/dethroning the Lakers in the playoffs as far as I can remember. OKC, are you kidding me?? It’s been like you’re underestimating Pop’s coaching mind.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@nbk…Lebron is the A-Rod of the NBA. He puts up remarkable and unbelievable numbers but disappears in the biggest moments. Lebron has put up the best stats but I don’t think he’s been the best for awhile. You can’t measure intangibles , maturity, and killer instinct with stats. You also can’t be the “hands down” best if you lack many basic fundamental skills. Kobe and Bron have been neck to neck for years with one been being depending on what day you watch them. Also, Lebron supposedly makes people better, so why hasnt he made anyone better on the Miami squad?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

The Spurs have only beat the Lakers in the playoffs twice since the Duncan era. Kobe and Lakers have the best postseason record versus SA than any other team and Kobe has had his biggest games against San Antonio in the playoffs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I hope it Knicks-Bulls in the 1st round of the playoffs, because Drose loves playing in MSG (like most superstars) and Drose has stepped his game up in the playoffs every year, so… he’s avg 25 and 8 now, in the playoffs it’ll be 28 and 9 and alot of broken ankles, than hopefully Bulls-Heat 2nd round, like Bill Simmons said, imagine Drose getting the MVP award before a possible game 2 against the Heat, with LeBron looking on, that should be alot of fun. Not saying Drose is the best player in the league, because Bron definetely is, I’m just looking forward to the godd*mn playoffs!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Lebron and Wade take turns dominating teams. Just like Wade had 24 in the first quarter against the pacers. It would be unfair to Rose if he keeps playing the way he does for the MVP to go to Lebron freakin Dwayne Wade.

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

I was going to go on another Phoenix Suns rant, but forget it. In my mind, the LAKERS are the New Phoenix Suns: Mentally weak, defensively horrid, and their best player is old and defensively shot. HOW DO YOU GUYS LIKE, HUH?
Nash to Miami. Pull the trigger. I’ve finally broken down, there was no reason for Gentry to keep Nash on the bench for that long last night, this was a big game and we needed him to play the minutes, ESPECIALLY before the all-star game he wasn’t even taking a part in. Total crap. Send Nash off to a place where he can win. Give Miami the shooter they need.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Kap is officially the stupidest person to ever post here.

  • JTaylor21

If putting up 29/8/7 in the playoffs means “disappearing” to you then just kill yourself. You can’t compare him to A-Rod because A-Rod never took an average team deep into playoffs, A-Rod never took an average squad into a championship series, A-Rod never took over games in the playoffs like Bron. A-Rod my a**, get outta of here with that foolish anology.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Kap FTL

  • http://slamonline.com nate

I don’t even need to debate with you slam readers today . All I have to say is d.rose best pg in the game . D.rose MVP!!

  • http://bulls.com airs

to be fair, one baseball player can hardly make enough of an impact to carry an entire team the way one basketball player can. that being said, i don’t see your comparison much either Kap.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

If Lebron was A-Rod, he would have went to the NBA’s equivalnt of the Yankees and went to the Lakers.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    *equivalent

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Okay so they did have the numbers against the Spurs, but this is a different season my man. The Lakers’ confidence is at their all time low, there’s no way they can beat San Antonio if ever they’ll face-off this postseason.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

So Bron gets no credit for the fact that Wade has the best shooting percentage of his career and the fewest turnovers since his rookie year?
Or that Arroyo was having a career year from three before he lost his starting spot to Chalmers?
Personally, I think it’s obvious he’s made life easier for Wade and Bosh and everybody else, but then again, Wade and Bosh were already great so it’s not going to be obvious statistically.

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

Guys, Kap is actually a pretty intelligent poster, there’s no need for petty insults.
That being said, he’s dead wrong. But still.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Nets and Nuggets have “tentatively” agreed to a deal “The Nets would get [Carmelo] Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman. In turn, the Nets would send Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round picks to the Nuggets.” If Melo agrees to sign an extension, this is the deal the Nuggets want to do

  • Bruno

first time I watch a full game of Rose in this season and damnnn parker couldnt do anything to stop him

  • JTaylor21

Damn, isn’t 4 first round picks a little too much?

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

That makes the Nets, at best 8th seed NEXT season.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

How bout mah dude Rose?! Y’all haters can kill dat noize bout him not bein da best pg in da league! My boi straight had dem spurs cats toe up from da flo up!
Rose finna be da best player in the league starting…rite now haters!!!
Da Bulls finna be da 2011 champs!
    Suck on it haters!!

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Phew! Now that I got that out of my system –
How bout that Bulls game last night? I expect big things from them when they get Noah back.
I have to admit I didn’t know much about Gary Neal, but after last night I was just salivating at the thought of the dude in a Bulls uniform.
Then again, these days I salivate at the thought of any shooting guard who can actually shoot being in a Bulls uniform.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Enigmatic is a bulls fan through and through, but its hard for me to believe that was even him.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@JTaylor, that’s what I said, the Nuggets getting a grip for Melo, if Derrick Favors turns into what he’s supposed to they may “win” this trade

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

nbk, I’m probably the most logical-thinking Bulls fan on here, but after a performance like last night’s by Rose, I had to let my inner “ignorant Rose d*ck-rider” come out, just for a breif apperance.
Logical Enigmatic is back now, I promise.
@Jahmai – I wouldn’t be so optimistic about a Bulls-Knicks postseason showdown until the Bulls prove they can actually beat the Knicks.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

So they Nets would basically get Melo and a bunch of scrubs?
I’m not even including Billups in there because IMO there’s no way he re-signs with NJ after the season.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@JT — Let’s cool it with the A-rod bashing. One player can’t take an average team anywhere in baseball. You only get 4-5 at-bats a game. So calm down. The comparison is invalid.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

And A-rod never took over games in the playoffs? He carried the Yankees in their last World Series Championship, you know that, right? If the only knowledge you know about a sport is misguided popular opinion, you shouldn’t reference said sport.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Enigmatic – lmao that’s fair man, I knew you were normally even keeled about the Bulls, but that right there, after Rose went bonanza, that’s fine. And yeah idk what NJ is doing with even offering or bringing that up, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy’s contract, 1 pick and devin harris is better then anything the Knicks can offer, so I don’t understand the need to include 3 more picks

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

So what if Favors is not better than Stromile Swift or Chris Wilcox?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

To put it bluntly, Derrick Favors has more physical tools then either of those guys, the physicality and athletic ability comparable to Amar’e Stoudemire. He could end up to be a bust, but from a physical/talent standpoint he will be IMO somewhere between Emeka Okafor and a lesser Dwight Howard. He is only like 19

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

NBK: I say a Hakim Warrick who can defend. I don’t see it in the kid, too unpolished even for a 19-year-old.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Derrick Favors – 6’10 250LBs ….. Hakim Warrick – 6’9 220Lbs…. If hakim warrick put on 30 pounds of muscle then yeah, but that’s like saying if Stromile Swift put on muscle. Swift and Warrick are soooooooooo alike, Derrick Favors will beyond a shadow of a doubt (barring injury ofcourse) have a better career then any of those three, Warrick Swift Wilcox

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Yeah, I don’t see much for Favors either.
Gani Lawal straight up outplayed him at G Tech.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

also Favors is averaging more rebounds per game then Warrick has at any point in his career and he isn’t even playing 20 minutes a night

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Kinda funny how there’s a lot less comments in the Post Up when it’s not accessible (sp?) from the home page.
