Ray Allen: ‘Kendrick Perkins Will Always Be a Celtic’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The C’s had a chance to say goodbye to their teammate and brother following the stunning trade yesterday, and they all described it as a tough and highly emotional moment.

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen addressed the press following last night’s loss in Denver, and though each made diplomatic statements, trading away Kendrick Perkins was not a popular move within the Boston locker room.

The Boston Herald reports:

“It’s not even about a teammate,” said Kevin Garnett. “You feel like you lost a family member today. Tough day.” Added Paul Pierce, “It was very emotional, especially for me being that I had a chance to see Perkins grow up from Day 1 fresh out of high school seeing him get to the level he got to on a championship team. I had a chance to talk to him at length this afternoon, but he was definitely hurt. The guys around this locker room are definitely hurt to see Perk go.”

Ray Allen also had a chance to talk with Perkins. “I just said, ‘Sorry,’” Allen said. “There’s no words that can really describe the emotions that you feel. Perk is a tough guy, (but) he was very emotional. Like he couldn’t get the words out that he needed to get out. “In my mind, he’ll always be a Celtic. He’s been here for eight years. I felt truly bad. That’s probably one of the toughest pills I’ve had to swallow of any player I’ve seen traded, because he was a part of what he was doing here. So we have to change that around and incorporate these new guys we got.” As for whether the trade will help the Celts, there was uncertainty. “We don’t know,” said Garnett. “That’s going to be the big question. Time is going to tell all that.”

Paul Pierce voiced the thought that’s been swirling around every Celtic fan’s brain since the news broke: “You hope that Danny (Ainge) and Doc (Rivers) know what they’re doing. I mean, we put our trust in them, so it is what it is. We can’t use any excuses and cry over spilled milk.”

Danny Ainge says the Celtics weren’t going to be able to afford to keep Perkins, so they decided to get something in return for him now. But the issue remains, with the team in clear “win-now” mode, it’s a bizarre move to look towards the future by getting rid of an integral part of the unit at such a critical time in the season.

The Celtics’ title hopes, in many ways, will rest on the health and productivity of Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal come Playoff time. It’s not hard to tell why many of their fans are furious and confused.

@ HAMMER – No hice ningún comentario a las 5:18 o 5:33. Eso fue un impostor que ha estado tratando de hacerme aparecer como un idiota.
    Dope Wu-Tang reference though!

Man, I love you dudes. Cantrell is a passionate lover, but Enig is more of a soft sentimental guy. I love both depending on the time of day.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Also lol @ Enigmatic @ 5:18.. We all know its not the REAL Enigmatic, but kinda caught me by surprise and made me laugh.. (probably shouldn’t encourage the little bastard though)..

  • tomtom

i realise this response is far to late for anybody to even rad it, but what the hell. @ccantrel and french…whateva ur name is, yeh i realise OKC are 4th in the west, middle of the road in the playoff pack (top 8) hence…mediocrity!

‘teammate and brother’ – They play basketball, they’re not a bunch of war buddies going into battle together. I’ve never understood why people over-dramatize something as trivial as basketball.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@youngmuggs- I can kinda relate, if u work with someone for a long time, seeing them everyday, even more than your own family sometimes they start to feel like family.. At one point I was best friends with a co worker that only knew a couple words of English (we mostly communicated through mime). Had beers at my house, and even took him to a couple of Blazer games. After working with some of these guys, everyday for 5+ years, you definitely build some sort of a bond..

To address cheeks: No need to ask Hulk anything..There are only a couple of players who would have signed an ext before it’s time so don’t try to throw the “money hungry” card out there hoping someone jumps on it. It was a smart business move by Perk and any other player NOT to sign the ext and see what they can get on the open market. {BUSINESS 101} NO one seems to be crying here but a lot of us have said we will miss him and what he brought to the table. As far as $$ being more important to him..who knows but this situation doesn’t even come close to saying that. The real Bottom Line is that KG is still the defensive glue and RR is the team glue so unless you have facts keep it in the gossip columns. No need 4 a back and 4th, I’m shredding my copy of the enquirer and am chill’n in front of the fireplace. GN SLAMdome.

2011 LAL are not the 2010 LAL. The Spurs might not be able to keep this up through June. OKC beating anyone in 7 games wouldn’t surprise me that much. They just got very big. Should help them a lot in the 2nd season. Perk, we love you and will miss you. We saw you go from raw HS kid to champion. Good luck in OKC, Beast. Peace. BosotonBaller!

7:53 not me…. Go eff yourself little coward-boy hiding behind people who actually have brains s/ns.. Really hope Slam gets this fixed soon.. Cowards will be cowards.. (Do U cry in the mirror often???)

Most black people make me so angry!

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Bad decision on the celtics behalf but its a fantastic pick up for okc. A solid (literally) defensive guy with championship knowledge will really compliment the youth of okc well. Still. What are the Cs doing?

  • Yesse

I dont think this was a smart move at all by Boston. Thunder got themselves a good big man, but will just see does he even like to play there.

    ^Lakeshow..
your just some dumb*ss laker fan who needs to stop riding kobes d*ck
^cheeks.. you just dont deserve a response

  • Jahi

This was a good move for the Celtics long-term. They’ll sign a serviceable big man off the waiver to join Shaq and Jermaine. Danny Ainge gets it, this is the Celtics last big run for 3-4 years.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Celtics are still best team in east, KG is the defensive glue with RR harassing point guard. Celtics should have won game 7 vs. Lakers with Perk, if continued to play team ball so don’t buy into hype. Lakers is my team, but we will still struggle with the Celtics if play in NBA Finals. I still predict Celtics winning East and Green playing a big part. Green can play and I feel OKC loses in this trade, because Green guarded 1-4, played defense and still was a reliable scorer and 3 point shooter. OKC GM is looking ahead, but can they afford to overpay Perk at the end of season. Celtics made the right trade for their future. BOOK IT!!

  • BostonBaller

vtrobot & The Seed, long time no read. The two of you are among the good (writing) reasons to keep coming back here. People know where you stand and what team you are loyal to but you don’t let that jade your comments or be too biased. Win or lose you come with it. Even if I didn’t agree with you on something we can agree to disagree and still respect the others opinions. Great stuff on a great site.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^the seed..
green is not what i (or anyone with common sense) would call a reliable defender who could guard 1-4 lol

  • Deedaw

I was so shocked and sad to hear that Boston traded Perkins. He was one of my favorite Celtics…aside from KG. OKC will derfinetly benefit from his defensive and rebounding mindset as they have been lacking in both areas in comparison to last year. I can’t say what will happen with Boston, but I am a bit worried just based on the effort against Denver. Plus are the O’Neals really that reliable/dependable deep into the playoffs? They have’nt been this year so whose to say they will be later on. Time will tell, but this really hurt as a C’s fan.

I kno im a little late… but i cant help the moment that i enter the conversation… First off, you cannot possibly write off the Thunder as one of the Elite teams in the L because they are… but first you have to define an Elite team in the L… In my opinion to be Elite you need a Primary Scorer, a scorer/creator @ PG, quality size on the Front Line, Depth, Defense, healthy FT shooting %, Energy, Discipline, vet/champ. experience, and good coaching…

Take this how you want but the Elite teams are LAL, MIA, NYK, SAS, OKC, DAL, BOS, CHI… and i believe POR may be a possible Elite team now with the energy gerald wallace will bring… and if they get healthy…

PERK did the right thing by #1 locking up his contract before the new CBA is put in place which will most likely make the players contracts considerably smaller and #2 signing as a potential center piece with a young uprising team like OKC… and Jeff Green is expendable, i dont believe he will forever be a Celtic he may be delt in the off-season for draft picks or even bought out of his contract he was trade bait for Thunder because he was undersized and not physical enough to play PF… not in this League…

may be lengthy but full of knoweledge if you just read
