Ray Allen: ‘Kendrick Perkins Will Always Be a Celtic’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The C’s had a chance to say goodbye to their teammate and brother following the stunning trade yesterday, and they all described it as a tough and highly emotional moment.

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen addressed the press following last night’s loss in Denver, and though each made diplomatic statements, trading away Kendrick Perkins was not a popular move within the Boston locker room.

The Boston Herald reports:

“It’s not even about a teammate,” said Kevin Garnett. “You feel like you lost a family member today. Tough day.” Added Paul Pierce, “It was very emotional, especially for me being that I had a chance to see Perkins grow up from Day 1 fresh out of high school seeing him get to the level he got to on a championship team. I had a chance to talk to him at length this afternoon, but he was definitely hurt. The guys around this locker room are definitely hurt to see Perk go.”

Ray Allen also had a chance to talk with Perkins. “I just said, ‘Sorry,’” Allen said. “There’s no words that can really describe the emotions that you feel. Perk is a tough guy, (but) he was very emotional. Like he couldn’t get the words out that he needed to get out. “In my mind, he’ll always be a Celtic. He’s been here for eight years. I felt truly bad. That’s probably one of the toughest pills I’ve had to swallow of any player I’ve seen traded, because he was a part of what he was doing here. So we have to change that around and incorporate these new guys we got.” As for whether the trade will help the Celts, there was uncertainty. “We don’t know,” said Garnett. “That’s going to be the big question. Time is going to tell all that.”

Paul Pierce voiced the thought that’s been swirling around every Celtic fan’s brain since the news broke: “You hope that Danny (Ainge) and Doc (Rivers) know what they’re doing. I mean, we put our trust in them, so it is what it is. We can’t use any excuses and cry over spilled milk.”

Danny Ainge says the Celtics weren’t going to be able to afford to keep Perkins, so they decided to get something in return for him now. But the issue remains, with the team in clear “win-now” mode, it’s a bizarre move to look towards the future by getting rid of an integral part of the unit at such a critical time in the season.

The Celtics’ title hopes, in many ways, will rest on the health and productivity of Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal come Playoff time. It’s not hard to tell why many of their fans are furious and confused.

not if he’s wearing a Thunder uniform :)

  • http://google c_cantrell

will be nice to see green in a green jersey.. i see only big things down the road for him, especially when half the team retires in a couple seasons.. dude is gna be a stud and flourish with rondo and davis

  • FBenn

and this is why the Celts lost lastnight!

  • http://google c_cantrell

and perkins is exactly what okc has needed for the last……. hell i dont even know how long its been since they had a decent 5.. and with the addition of the spark plug off the bench (nate robinson) this thunder team just gets that much better and are truly amoungst the elite of the nba.. can wait to wee some okc post season action now

  • Benn0

gutted – but if he was asking for stupid money, and we would have lost him the summer, then getting jeff green could turn out to be a good deal. Just hope the two o’neals can get fit and fit for the playoffs!!!

I also feel sorry for marquis – he was a solid player, who never complained, and put his shift in – good luck marquis!

  • Benn0

By the way, Is it me or has nate robinson seemed a little off this season?

  • Max

    Yeah, Thunder also got Nazr.

your not being sarcastic, are you? lol.. tell me what you think bout the thunder now

  • Lazarus

@c_cantrell this is only okcs 3rd season so calm down.

  • http://nicekicks.com Meloman2.0

This makes absolutely ZERO sense… they messed with something that worked so well for them. Perkins was the enforcer, feared by opposing teams. Garnetts bark wont mean as much now tht Perk is gone. Truly a sad day for the Celtics fans

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@DreXnaW21, was thinking the exact same thing.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

as long as Shaq is healthy and the C’s pick up Troy Murphy (from what I hear extremely possible), they’ll be more than OK. that said, i’ll miss Perk big time. he’s an outstanding defender and I’ve really come to admire his work ethic. the Thunder just got a lot scarier, particularly for the Lakers.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^Lazarus..
stfu bro.. they have as good a chance as the lakers, heat, spurs, and every other top team in the league.. so do yourself a favor bud and next time dont comment if you dont know what your talking bout, ok? have a nice day dude

  • http://jooo Max

He won’t be a Celtic anymore!

  • Dave

Can’t understate what this could do to the team chemistry…At the start of the season everyone was impressed with how close this team was, I can’t help but think moving so many pieces, and especially someone as important and familiar as Perkins, could have a deep psychological impact on the team as well.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^Dave..
the same applies to the thunder… they never make big trades like this and are more like a brotherhood than any team in the league.. they are always constantly hangin with each other and are all great friends.. i wonder if presti and durant discussed these moves before they were made.. cause i cant see presti doing anything that could potentially piss durant off

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Lazarus – you do know before they were the Thunder they were this team called the Seattle Supersonics, right?
Trust, they been around longer than 3 years.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I can’t believe the Celtics traded away Perkins. Great move for the Thunder though. Now the Spurs have a serous threat in the West once the real season starts.

  • Naiym

I am die hard Nuggets fan, but the Celts are my second fav team…You talk about Low…I thought that the Chauncey trade was rough, but Chauncey heard this in his ear for quite sometime and MElo was forcing the hand of the front office….But MAn, this???? Dude is a Celtic! It’s like seeign Jordan in that stupid Wizard Jersey and wondering if he realized Halloween was over…I hate trades..Yes Baron DESERVED, to go to the CAvs..he was the NBA equivalent of “fat BAstard” yet was making 65 mil heck yeah.. but Perkins…no way..low, and I lvoe the Celts, but Karma may come bite them in the butt ( aka garnetts knee or Rondo’s ankle) or something for this…I mean I have Celts to win it all, but this..this is too much…

  • ClydeSays

I understand from a contract perspective. C’s supposedly offered Perk the max under the CBA and Perk wanted a lot more based on what other 5′s are getting paid (Noah, 60 mil, Haywood (!) 52 mil, etc…). Understood. Ainge faced losing his big man for nothing in the offseason or trading him at the deadline.

Still hurts though. JGreen and Kristic had better bring it…

  • paul

I think a lot of Celtics fans are hurting over this on a personal level. The way Perkins had grown with the team meant a lot to fans as well as to players. He was not only a rock in the areas of defense and rebounding, but a guy who brought a lot of intangibles with him. Folks thought that he defined aspects of Celtic ball – the toughness, intensity and work ethic.

But beyond all that, the trade clearly makes no sense. At best it’s a huge gamble. Yes, yes, yes, bringing Green back to the Cs is a great idea, for several reasons, but the problem with that was the same as the problem with every other bright idea for adding key missing pieces: you had to give away too much to make it happen. Teams just aren’t going to give you an excellent player for scrubs off your bench. They are going to want one of your key pieces, and when you have the second best record in the league, what sense does THAT kind of trade make? None, unless it’s some masterpiece of subtle genius, which this isn’t. This is the product of too many coffee-fueled late nights, too much time spent in the sweaty atmosphere of a panicking front office, and too much time spent plugged into a cell phone. Ainge had obviously reached the point where he was determined to do SOMETHING, anything… Basically, any chance at all for Ainge’s wheeling and dealing to work out hinges on Shaq coming back strong. While we can all agree, I’m sure, that Shaq gave the Cs far more this season than they could reasonably expect, it’s also clear that he’s become fragile physically, and that he’s not always tuned in mentally. He was brought in as a stopgap, as a bench guy and as insurance. He’s no longer someone who can be a team’s anchor. So maybe what Ainge did yesterday will work out brilliantly; it’s much more likely that Celtics fans will rue the day for a long time.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Does Ainge even care to talk to his players once in a while, feel the pulse of the locker room?
With his offensive versatility, JG could make the C’s more than a handful wgen attacking, BUT if he falters from the start, damn those vets might just use him as a scapegoat for what happens till June.
Hey Shaq;welcome to the pressure cooker, hombre. Scrutiny’s a biatch, is it not?

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

@ClydeSays: Doc Rivers has proven to be a master at getting guys to bring it. George Karl calls Ray Allen a weak defender. pretty soon, under Doc, he’s playing real solid D on Kobe in the Finals. Nate Robinson’s a pariah in New York, criticized for lack of focus. after being traded to the C’s, he wins a few big playoff (and finals) games for them. Doc is just great at maxing out players, and when players find themselves in a locker room like the Celtics’, one filled with vets competing for a championship, they quickly realize that they’re going to need to give it their all.

  • Fat Lever

Doc can never use the argument, “Well they never played against our starting 5 and beat us” again. As much as I can’ stand most of the Celtics, Kendrick was a very good player who knew his role and never tried to extend beyond that. Play d, rebound, and occasionally have a play called for him.

  • Ali

I’m bout to shed a tear…get the GTFOH wit this sob story. Get it together Boston!

  • Boax87

Ray Allen says he will “Always be a Celtic.” Strange perspective from someone who has played on so many teams and was so recently made a Celtic himself.

  • ErnieD

Perk is only 8 Months off of ACL Knee Surgery, and was not going to be close to 100% this season. He looked good at times, and other times he looked like he lost a few steps. Now he’s hurt again (although minor) and he wasn’t going to respond well to playing 30 minutes a game come crunch time.

  • Eddie

Haha PP just called Perkins spilled milk. Describes his offensive output accurately.

  • LakeShow

    Perkins = Hiiiiiiighly overrated…

  • vtrobot

@ Eddie & Boax87: You both seem pretty clueless.

  • BostonBaller

Perk was/is not overrated, just ask your fav team. He puts in the work and does his job, he will be missed. There aren’t that many good true centers in the L and he is one of them. Could this be a Celtic ploy to either rid themselves of the Lakers or at least have their bigs tired in the Finals? (if either team makes it) Wait, that would be a RED A move. lol. Ainge dealt the cards now Doc has to play the hand he is dealt. Doc is a card shark. The players will get over it and play hard all the while trying to bring these newbies along (and whoever else we get). BTW Ray has earned the right to say what he wants and you know what he means..stop nit pick’n. hahaha

  • BostonBaller

There’s a frigid rain falling on the still snow filled Boston right now…it feels like one of those funerals you go to every so often….sad. Thank God I call funerals celebrations b/c I’m looking on the bright side! Come on in and try to have a party at The Garden if you think we are 6 feet under.

  • Eddie

Whatever, all I’m saying is, that as a Laker’s fan, I’m a bit MORE scared of the celtics now that Perk is gone.

  • Eddie

ALSO, team friendship is truly overrated (team chemistry is not however. I wouldn’t say their chemistry suffered this season as Perk didn’t start playing until a month ago.). And in regards to friendship, the Big 3 were never really that close to perkins in and outside the locker room and off the court. I mean cmon last year people wanted to trade ray allen! Now y’all bustin tears for Perkins?? Really??

  • Ali

@ Eddie…I feel you! Less we forget, that the association is a business. Them muggs calling the shot don’t give a damn if ya’ll (the team) is like family. Win us some chips, as in more that one, then we can talk about family. And if you got a serious injured and miss alot of games all the more reason to ship your lame a** outta town for a healthy buck! Hahaha….let me stop…

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Buck Foston

Love this quote from Phil Jackson in a Los Angeles Times blog. The set-up: After the Lakers won the championship last year, Boston’s Doc Rivers said the injury to Kendrick Perkins meant the Celtics’ title team of the previous year hadn’t been defeated.

“They still haven’t beaten our starting five,” Rivers said.

Cut to Jackson after the trade of Perkins.

“They go down as never having lost a playoff series,” he said.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Damn, been a minute since I seen BostonBaller on here.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Naiym – The CHEAP (avoid luxury tax at all cost during their window of opportunity) Nuggets forced Melo’s hand. And let me add, George Karl is a spiteful DIVA head coach who never really could connect with Melo…just like Georgie couldn’t connect with Ray Allen while they both were in Milwaukee.

  • tomtom

Ccantrel. ‘truly among the league’s elite’ rofl that made my day. Okc add perk and nate and that makes them contenders? No disrespect to perk, he’s a work horse but he aint a stepping stone from mediocrety to elite level team.

  • flash

rondo and green is the future of the celtics. maybe ainge never really believed that theyre gonna win it all this season, cos if he did he wouldnt……

  • http://google c_cantrell

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^flash..
thats exactly what i been thinkin bro

  • Alex

TomTom, I agree they aren’t elite yet, but they sure damn well will be. All they needed was an inside defensive force. It’s a perfect complimentary piece for OKC. They don’t need a high scoring Center when they have two stars in Durant and Westbrook. They have size, athleticism and youth. If Westbrook is able to make better decisions with the ball, that team is scary for anybody. Time is on OKC’s side.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^Lakeshow..
perkins is not overrated at all.. he is the best defensive 5 in the nba (besides howard, of course).. and he will impact the thunder tremendously with his d and also the impact of being a true defensive center will help out alot too.. no one can guard dwight as good this man can (not that they will have to worry about the magic in the post season anyway, i see them preparing for summer vacation shortly after the 2nd round of the playoffs)

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 DFrance21

@tomtom mediocrity? You do realize that OKC is 4th out west right now right? How could adding a defensive anchor like Perk not put them up with the top teams that they are already competing with?

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^DFrance21..
ignorant ppl annoy the hell outta me bro.. okc will make one hell of a run this year and can for sure make it at least to the WCF for sure.. they could possibly win the chip, but honestly i dont see it happening this year but they have enough game to beat anyone in the west in a 7 game series

  • Eddie

Truth be told. Nate Robinson was trying to comfort Perkins by saying that he wasn’t going through it alone and Nate would be right there next to him. Perk was probably shedding them big boy tears BECAUSE of getting stuck with Donkey.

    Eddie

  • HAMMER

I like ur enthusiasm over ur team c_cantrell. But my pov is that as long as the spurs r around, and healthy, ur thunder won’t get past them. As good as Perkins is, I find it hard 2 believe he is the “missing piece” that puts them over the hump. And i wouldnt go as far as 2 say their among the elite either. Not yet @ least. But no doubt they r a dangerous team that nobody would want 2 face n the playoffs

you are an idiot my friend

  • http://dude Chukaz

I woulda kept Perkins and tried to resign him. Its not like Jeff Green’s gonna want to make the vets minimum for the next 5 years. He’s probably gonna want a contract in the 40 to 50 million dollar range which okc wouldn’t give him cuz he plays the same position as durant. Instead of giving their starting center his 40 mil the celtics decided that they were gonna give that kind of money to p double’s back up. is it me or is that completely stupid? is zeke running the celtics now?

  • HAMMER

I like ur enthusiasm over ur team c_cantrell. But my pov is that as long as the spurs r around, and healthy, ur thunder wont get past them. “they r a dangerous team that nobody would want 2 face n the playoffs”
now this makes no sense bro.. anyone who does not think the thunder are an elite team in the L is flat out ignorant

  • LakeShow

OKC is not an elite team not yet anyways. There are only about 6 “elite” teams in the L and OKC is not one of them. Let’s at least wait and see how they perform with their new pieces before we anoint them.

OKC is not an elite team. they got 2 games from the lakers last year in the first round. and now theyre elite? cantrell is a big douche. stfu cause okg aint gonna be winning anytime soon. face it.

  • cheeks

for all of em CELTICS FANS, ask PERK why he didnt sign an extension if hes so CELTIC like. cmon.. money took over and now yall are crying. PERK knows kg pp and shuttlesworth have 2 years max, and 1 injury away from ending their careers. obviously money is more impt for PERK. bottom line. boston lost their glue, and perk gon be crying to bring time back and sign an extension. boohoo.

  • burnt_chicken

let’s say the C’s sign Murphy. And Sheed. Then dole out minutes to them, Shaq, Big Baby, J O’Neal, Nenad (maybe), and KG (presuming Green slots in as more of a 3 unless they want to small ball sometimes with Kid at the 5). That’s a lot of angry old man fouls. Not too many people would want to enter that lane, at least consistently. Looks like a legit playoff roster to me…and by ‘legit’ I mean ‘championship calibre’.

@youngmuggs- I can kinda relate, if u work with someone for a long time, seeing them everyday, even more than your own family sometimes they start to feel like family.. At one point I was best friends with a co worker that only knew a couple words of English (we mostly communicated through mime). Had beers at my house, and even took him to a couple of Blazer games. After working with some of these guys, everyday for 5+ years, you definitely build some sort of a bond..

To address cheeks: No need to ask Hulk anything..There are only a couple of players who would have signed an ext before it’s time so don’t try to throw the “money hungry” card out there hoping someone jumps on it. It was a smart business move by Perk and any other player NOT to sign the ext and see what they can get on the open market. {BUSINESS 101} NO one seems to be crying here but a lot of us have said we will miss him and what he brought to the table. As far as $$ being more important to him..who knows but this situation doesn’t even come close to saying that. The real Bottom Line is that KG is still the defensive glue and RR is the team glue so unless you have facts keep it in the gossip columns. No need 4 a back and 4th, I’m shredding my copy of the enquirer and am chill’n in front of the fireplace. GN SLAMdome.

2011 LAL are not the 2010 LAL. The Spurs might not be able to keep this up through June. OKC beating anyone in 7 games wouldn’t surprise me that much. They just got very big. Should help them a lot in the 2nd season. Perk, we love you and will miss you. We saw you go from raw HS kid to champion. Good luck in OKC, Beast. Peace. BosotonBaller!

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Bad decision on the celtics behalf but its a fantastic pick up for okc. A solid (literally) defensive guy with championship knowledge will really compliment the youth of okc well. Still. What are the Cs doing?

I dont think this was a smart move at all by Boston. Thunder got themselves a good big man, but will just see does he even like to play there.

    ^Lakeshow..
your just some dumb*ss laker fan who needs to stop riding kobes d*ck
^cheeks.. you just dont deserve a response

This was a good move for the Celtics long-term. They’ll sign a serviceable big man off the waiver to join Shaq and Jermaine. Danny Ainge gets it, this is the Celtics last big run for 3-4 years.

Celtics are still best team in east, KG is the defensive glue with RR harassing point guard. Celtics should have won game 7 vs. Lakers with Perk, if continued to play team ball so don’t buy into hype. Lakers is my team, but we will still struggle with the Celtics if play in NBA Finals. I still predict Celtics winning East and Green playing a big part. Green can play and I feel OKC loses in this trade, because Green guarded 1-4, played defense and still was a reliable scorer and 3 point shooter. OKC GM is looking ahead, but can they afford to overpay Perk at the end of season. Celtics made the right trade for their future. BOOK IT!!

vtrobot & The Seed, long time no read. The two of you are among the good (writing) reasons to keep coming back here. People know where you stand and what team you are loyal to but you don’t let that jade your comments or be too biased. Win or lose you come with it. Even if I didn’t agree with you on something we can agree to disagree and still respect the others opinions. Great stuff on a great site.

    ^the seed..
green is not what i (or anyone with common sense) would call a reliable defender who could guard 1-4 lol

I was so shocked and sad to hear that Boston traded Perkins. He was one of my favorite Celtics…aside from KG. OKC will derfinetly benefit from his defensive and rebounding mindset as they have been lacking in both areas in comparison to last year. I can’t say what will happen with Boston, but I am a bit worried just based on the effort against Denver. Plus are the O’Neals really that reliable/dependable deep into the playoffs? They have’nt been this year so whose to say they will be later on. Time will tell, but this really hurt as a C’s fan.

I kno im a little late… but i cant help the moment that i enter the conversation… First off, you cannot possibly write off the Thunder as one of the Elite teams in the L because they are… but first you have to define an Elite team in the L… In my opinion to be Elite you need a Primary Scorer, a scorer/creator @ PG, quality size on the Front Line, Depth, Defense, healthy FT shooting %, Energy, Discipline, vet/champ. experience, and good coaching…

Take this how you want but the Elite teams are LAL, MIA, NYK, SAS, OKC, DAL, BOS, CHI… and i believe POR may be a possible Elite team now with the energy gerald wallace will bring… and if they get healthy…

PERK did the right thing by #1 locking up his contract before the new CBA is put in place which will most likely make the players contracts considerably smaller and #2 signing as a potential center piece with a young uprising team like OKC… and Jeff Green is expendable, i dont believe he will forever be a Celtic he may be delt in the off-season for draft picks or even bought out of his contract he was trade bait for Thunder because he was undersized and not physical enough to play PF… not in this League…

may be lengthy but full of knoweledge if you just read
