  I feel the Knicks gave up alot, but honestly, we weren’t going to sign Wilson at the end of the year because we couldn’t afford him AND Melo had he become a free agent. Felton was a two year rental until CP3 became a FA. He was dope, but he was a goner anyway. Ultimately, we traded Gallo and Mozgov for Melo and Chauncy. Not to mention a sh*tload of draft picks. But hopefully by then, we won’t need them. If we do, God help the Knicks.

  Who says Chandler wouldn’t re-sign? If the Knicks would have treated him better instead of throwing him into every possible trade scenario, then maybe he would have.
  However, this is looking like a pretty good move for the Knickerbockers. They got both Anthony AND Billups. Sucks to see Felton go though… Damn.

  Man, I can’t believe it actually happened… finally over though. Knicks aren’t good enough without Gallo, Mozgov and Chandler though. They gave up way too much, and I can’t help but wonder how this will pan out for the Knicks. Melo’s chance to take advantage of Lebron’s Decision and establish himself as a legitimate superstar just went out the window. I really like where the Denver Nuggets are right now though; Lawson/Felton, Afflalo/Smith, Chandler/Gallo, Nene/Martin, Mozgov/Birdman. Hopefully Nene will become the focus of the offense now and Gallinari can shoot out of double teams.

  Knicks may have a starting 5 of Billups, Fields, Anthony, Stoudemire and Turiaf/Randolph… but where is the depth? Douglas is a decent sixth man-type player, but that’s where it ends. The Celtics and the Lakers are the two best teams in the NBA, and they have a talented and deep bench.

  They gave up too much. Billups – even if he does play out the season – is more or less inconsequential to this trade. Besides, I’m not convinced these two will even work well together at all. Refer to Steve Kerrs thoughts on this during the ASG. They have absolutely zero depth inside – for now anyway. Oh yeah: they’re two best players? Possibly the two worst defenders at their respective positions. Amare for sure, Melo, well, maybe. Thats a key difference between Miami’s guys, Boston’s guys right there.

Lets stop pretending Galinari and Wilson Chandler were anything other than decent pieces, because they weren’t and frankly aren’t…and as defenses really started to key in on these guys there record began to tail accordingly.

  Denver got a GREAT deal though–this is as good as it gets for the Nuggets. Wilson Chandler will be a future All-Star on this team. He was the player I least wanted to leave, but I’m happy for the dude–watch for him to put up 20+ points a night. Gallinari will flourish as well, and Felton, well, he maintains a starting gig.

  what you’re all forgetting is that the world will not end after this season (shocking, I know) and that NY Knicks basketball will draw numerous free agents and the semi-retired and depth will be far from an issue.   Are people forgetting that Billups wanted a buyout? I don’t think he will want to play in New York. Oh and to those wondering why they didnt wait to sign Melo in the offseason? The possiblity of a lockout next season because the absence of a CBA for the future. So the only real option they had as far as pursuing Melo was to sign him now. On paper it seems to be alot. But players shining in New York such as Gallinari and Felton are arguably products of the D’antoni system of offense, with the exception of Chandler. But all that for Melo is worth it. Youre talking about a guy who is a top 5 player and arguably top scorer in the league. A cold blooded killer from the block with playoff experience. A guy who can potentially carry a team by himself, let alone do it with another star in Stoudemire now. With a coach like D’Antoni, getting the offense revolving around Melo and STAT will be smooth. Cant wait to see this.

  @Michael NZ how is he not a top 5 player in this league? If youre going by SLAM Top 50, sure, but Melo is certainly among the best players in the league offensively. Maybe he isn’t the most defensively inclined player but that doesnt hurt the knicks, who are an uptempo, run and gun team. @Bakers he didn’t have Camby and Billups on the same team at the same time. They got Billups in the beginning of the 08-09 campaign, after Camby had been traded to the Clippers. The Reason the Nuggets couldnt get it done in that postseason was because they ran into the Lakers and in fact, played a competitive series against the eventual champs. And then last postseason, the Nuggs were missing their Head Coach George Karl due to illness.

  Melo and Amare, together, make Knicks basketball fully relevant again. That was Walsh’s mission when he first came to NYC, and he’s accomplished it. The Knicks will be a story (in a good way) every night, and I think we’ll see some amazing things from those two offensively. Billups will likely be a short-term rental before Paul or Williams come to town, but as a short-term rental he’ll probably excel. The next question you’d have to ask is whether the Knicks can contend for a championship with this core. My gut feeling is that they can’t, because Melo and Amare simply aren’t good passers or two-way players like Wade and Lebron, while I have only limited faith in D’antoni. Still, at the very least the Knicks will be a serious threat in the playoffs and, should Paul or Williams come to town, will at least have the talent to win it all in a league with increasingly stacked teams. The Nuggets did well to wait for the best deal, and ultimately I think this is one of the very few blockbuster trades that actually help all participants. Hell, this even helps the Nets: they were never going to go anywhere by gutting their team for Melo.

  It’s not about defense because the Knicks aren’t winning ish even with a prime Pip as long as Mike No D’ Antoni is the coach. They won’t win a chip but they can put a real scare into any of the east top 4 seeds if they meet in the playoffs. It’s all about the garden and basketball in NY getting back into the limelight.   The Black Rick Kamla is one of a handful of people actually making sense in this thread. Wilson chandler was going to test out the free agency (which is why the knicks started throwing him INTO trade talks actually). Gallo was great for awhile but his inconsistency and injuries will prove this trade valuable. Felton was the only one that actually stings a little only because i have no idea how chauncey is going to play in this system. Mozgov has been sitting on the bench since a few weeks ago, they didnt want to trade him because he could still be useful for either them or another trade but oh well. I have a feeling the knicks arent done (apart from getting corey brewer)

  As for Melo being a top-5 player: that level belongs to multi-dimensional players. Melo isn’t a great passer or defender, nor is he an especially efficient player. He’s great in the clutch though, and he’s a competent rebounder so in my book he’s definitely top-10.

  In all seriousness, Azabuke showed some flashes of greatness in Golden State when healthy. Brewer’s jumpshot is inconsistent, but he’s a great finisher on the break. Corey had a great dunk on Derek Fisher not too long ago. Billy Walker and Williams will fill up the slack nicely. Toney Douglas, who’s underrated, will step up too.

  What really sucks about this trade is that you know Donnie Walsh wasn’t on board with it. Isiah Thomas convinced Dolan to overrule Walsh and pull the trigger. That said, I doubt Walsh will be back, and honestly, I love that man for what he’s done for my team. Not only did he give them back a little dignity, but he’s made SMART moves as far as trades, draft picks and signing Stat. Now we have to prepare for the inevitable return of the sexual harasser.

  Not necessarily. I can arguably say the same for Durant. He is neither a particularly skilled passer or defender. And look at it this way. When Dirk Nowitzki won the MVP in 2007, wasn’t he one of the top 5 players in the game? But was he really one bit more multi-dimensional then than he is now? He is more efficient than ever, but I wouldn’t say he currently a top 5 player. But yes, you are right, he is very clutch and a great rebounding 3.
  In the end my point is that Carmelo is worth all that New York gave away once you get back to how great of a player he is and how young he is. He is turning only 27 soon. So he’s got plenty of skill and midrange jumpers to feed small forwards across the league on a nightly basis.

  In all seriousness, Azabuke showed some flashes of greatness in Golden State when healthy. Brewer’s jumpshot is inconsistent, but he’s a great finisher on the break. Corey had a great dunk on Derek Fisher not too long ago. Billy Walker and Williams will fill up the slack nicely. Toney Douglas, who’s underrated, will step up too.

  On Melo as a top-5 player: Lebron, Wade and Kobe are fantastic all-around players. They’re great scorers, great defenders, good rebounders at their positions and great passers (yes, even Kobe, when he wants to be). They’re also reliable in the clutch – there’s a reason they’re in everybody’s top three. Maybe it’s controversial but I’d say Howard is a solid #4 this year, as his offence has finally caught up to his defence. I’d slot Durant in the #5 slot because he’s such a monster scorer and his all-around game is pretty underrated: no, he’s not a great defender or passer but he’s more consistent in these categories than Carmelo. Now beyond this top five, I’d also argue that there are additional players that may not have Carmelo’s offensive repertoire, but still have a greater impact on the game and are in that respect better players. People are making fun of the guy who said Gasol is better than Melo, but I’d argue that when healthy and motivated Gasol probably does have more of an impact on a game than Melo. Either way there’s a persuasive case to be made (see articles in truehoop, wagesofwins and roundball mining company) that Melo’s good-but-not-great advanced statistics, poor passing game and spotty defence keep him out of the game’s top-five.

  The bench is going to be fine with Azubuike, Brewer and Walker will fill in fine off the bench for Chandler and Gallo but one guy not being mentioned is Timofey Mozgov. Turiaf has heart but Mozgov has some skills for a 7 footer.

  Melo is a legit top-10 player. There was a time when Dirk and Nash were considered top-10 even top-5 players and those guys couldn’t stop a dead man from scoring so Melo gets in. Also if KD’s non defensive a** is labeled a top-5 player, why isn’t Melo. They are the exact same player, both are good rebounders, great scorers but they suck on the defensive end and can’t create for others.

  At first i thought the Knicks gave up too much, but Melo’ is one of the best in the game. In my opinion probably top 6 or 7 guys in the L. We gave up Danilo which sucks, but i mean its Carmelo. I dont like Billups over Felton, but what can you do. The Knicks wont make any noise this year, but long-term this is great. They wont lose anything this year.

  Knicks look better, but not by much. I don’t see Melo and STAT meshing together all that well and Chauncey is just a rental, if even, so I don’t see why Knicks fans are debating how well he’ll do in the D’Antoni system. Denver got a great deal and can finally play good team basketball. Melo is my boy but his ball hoggin tendencies were frustrating. Denver plays best when they play team basketball, and now they have no choice but to play team ball now.

  This will obviously bring the Knicks back to contender status in the long run cause I believe they will sign a big time point guard and well as more pieces to make them a deeper team in the 2012 offseason.
  But I gotta be honest, as a Bulls fan, with a possible Bulls/Knicks showdown in the first round looming, I was more scared of the team that whooped the Bulls twice this season than I am of this new team.
  They had more depth, long range bombers, an incredibly streaky shooter in Gallo, a jack of all trades in Chandler (DePaul stand up!!), and crazy chemistry between Felton and STAT.
  Granted, we haven’t seen this team yet and I may eat my words afterall. STAT + Melo = crazy offensive firepower, and you can’t sleep on Billups still, but like I said, I think overall their team was better before.

  It seemed like all the other teams were in a holding pattern waiting to see how the Melo situation played out.
  Now that there’s been a resolution, I expect a few more teams to make some trades.
  Rumblings coming out of the Chicago Bulls media is that with the Nuggets now having a bit of a logjam on the perimeter, they might try to entice the Nuggets to give up either JR Smith or Wilson Chandler by dangling Taj Gibson and a 1st round pick.
  I love Taj, but Chandler in a Bulls uni would be dope. JR too if he can keep his head on straight.

  this was a bad idea for ny. props to denver though. yeah chauncey couldn’t really get the nuggets to play great defense…the knicks will be terrible defensively. Plus you had a great developing pg that you traded for one that’s DEFINITELY leaving so you could gamble on somebody else..not necessairly a good decision .and melo and stat are both kinda ballhogs, just they’re personality combination is gonna be weird.

  Knicks aren’t better than Atlanta or Orlando, which is why I find the “contender” talks absolutely hilarious. It’s still good for them because of the hype and excitement it creates, as well as the playoff buzz and a TON of money to be made off it. They’ll be fun to watch in D’Antoni’s no-defense system, but I just don’t feel the championship hype is fair because they’ll be ragged on when they fail to win a ring, when in reality that’s not what should be expected of this team.

  The Knicks had no rebounding and their D, though shoddy, depended on those young guys and mostly quick hands and legs. That was before the trade. Now they still have no rebounding, even less D, no true big guy, a 34 year old point guard that doesn’t run and a small forward who needs to have the ball exclusively to score his 25. The Knicks also lost a ton of very good outside shooters.
  Me thinks there is a very good chance of not even making the playoffs. On the other hand, it’ll be exciting to see how this works out.

  NY isn’t built to win right away, but with all the draft picks they got in this deal and Melo and Stat to build around they have a VERY bright future. Along with that, NY is one of the most highly coveted basketball locations in the league, so they could convince almost anyone to sign there.   O, buike would be a great fit for NY if he ever regains his form post-injury. dude can stroke the 3, go to the hole with aggression, and is an above-average defender. BUT, it all depends on how he recovers

  Florida was four years ago. As of now, he’s shooting 38.4% from the field, 26.3% from three and 70.8% from the line. His TS% is 47.2 and his eFG% is 41.4. All of these numbers are far below average. His shot has no balance, consistent form or range. He is “that bad”.

  It is not going to happen this year… if it took the heat a good 3 months to gel and start playing the basketball they were expected to play it would have to take the knicks even longer considering they gave up 4 of their starters..

  As a Nuggets fan…people are delusional if they think Melo is going to make the Knicks a serious serious threat in the East. Dude may get you to the playoffs where he will hop into his 5-26 shooting ways all while leaving his defense on the bus.
