Report: Carmelo Anthony Officially Traded to New York Knicks

Looks like the Melodrama is finally coming to an end. The Denver Post has the story: “The Carmelo Anthony trade saga is finally over. The Nuggets traded Melo to the New York Knicks tonight, a league source said. Denver gets Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors’ 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors’ 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash. Anthony will go to New York, along with Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. Anthony was not at the Nuggets’ practice as the team resumed workouts following the All-Star break.”

    Nuggets got the better deal

    About time

  • http://www.twitter.com/djhurrikane13 DJ HurriKane

Bad look for the Knicks though…gave up to much

  • http://www.twitter.com/djhurrikane13 DJ HurriKane

The Knicks gave up to much though

  • michael

    Here we go. First.

  • west_coast

No way did NY give up too much… Mr. Big Shot for Felton is a scratch… Those draft picks will likely amount to nothing.

The Knicks have officially just re-entered relevancy. For real this time.

  • http://www.basketbrasil.com.br Rubens

Chandler wouldn’t resign, felton wasn’t on the long term plans, I fail to see how is this too much

  • Ken

Wow, the Nuggets got a great return. Well done.

  • Ganchan

brutal that the nuggets had to throw Chauncey under the bus in this deal.

  • Quail

feel kinda bad for Raymond Felton. He was finding a good niche in New York.

  • O

I feel the Knicks gave up alot, but honestly, we weren’t going to sign Wilson at the end of the year because we couldn’t afford him AND Melo had he become a free agent. Felton was a two year rental until CP3 became a FA. He was dope, but he was a goner anyway. Ultimately, we traded Gallo and Mozgov for Melo and Chauncy. Not to mention a sh*tload of draft picks. But hopefully by then, we won’t need them. If we do, God help the Knicks.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Knicks gave up too much?????? are yall smoking??? We are talking about Carmelo Anthony!!!!!!! and you keep Landry Fields!!!!???? and you get Chauncey!!!??? (must be bitter sweet fro him, I know his heart was in Colorado)…..who needs Wilson Chandler and Galinari when Melo is better than both combined and a bag of chips?? Raymond was playing decent basketball in that system, Chauncey will be even better. Melo took his time, so did the Knicks, and in the long run both were better for it! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIRRRRRRRR

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/load-o-bull/2011 Diesel

Wow, only the Knicks could decimate their entire team, outbidding themselves, for a player that made it pretty obvious he’d sign there in the offseason regardless. If they don’t follow up on this deal by signing Deron Williams or CP3 next season, then the team actually got worse.

  • http://Slamonline.com Hossy

And cue the chris paul/ dwill rumors… NOW

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Who says Chandler wouldn’t re-sign? If the Knicks would have treated him better instead of throwing him into every possible trade scenario, then maybe he would have.
However, this is looking like a pretty good move for the Knickerbockers. They got both Anthony AND Billups. Sucks to see Felton go though… Damn.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Man, I can’t believe it actually happened… finally over though. Knicks aren’t good enough without Gallo, Mozgov and Chandler though. They gave up way too much, and I can’t help but wonder how this will pan out for the Knicks.

Melo’s chance to take advantage of Lebron’s Decision and establish himself as a legitimate superstar just went out the window. I really like where the Denver Nuggets are right now though; Lawson/Felton, Afflalo/Smith, Chandler/Gallo, Nene/Martin, Mozgov/Birdman. Hopefully Nene will become the focus of the offense now and Gallinari can shoot out of double teams.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Between Chauncey, Melo, and Stoudemire, where is any form of defense? We may see games with total scores approaching 300…

  • TRIMEGADON

    me throwing up just stopped.

  • andreanglais

wow, sucks for Raymond and Chauncey. One young guy who is finally playing to his potential gets the rug pulled out from under him, and a much loved vet (understatement) finishing out his career in his home town is suddenly playing in under a huge spotlight in NY. I hope the Nicks get some wins.

  • http://Hoopshype.com Hossy

And cue the chris paul/demon williams rumors… NOW

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

all right lets calm down. Before this the Knicks were destined to be one-round wonders, now the sky is the limit

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/load-o-bull/2011 Diesel

I wouldn’t be so sure Chauncey reports to NY. He may just retire.

  • Scott Carter

So let me see now, that makes a starting lineup of: PG-Chauncey Billups, SG-Landry Fields, SF-Carmelo Anthony, C-Amare Stoudemire, PF-……uh, who’s the power forward?? #justsayin

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/load-o-bull/2011 Diesel

If by sky, you mean a worse version of Miami, then yes, the sky is the limit.

  • http://hiphopisntdeaditsjustsleeping.blogspot.com/ @aboynamedandy

Knicks may have a starting 5 of Billups, Fields, Anthony, Stoudemire and Turiaf/Randolph… but where is the depth? Douglas is a decent sixth man-type player, but that’s where it ends.

The Celtics and the Lakers are the two best teams in the NBA, and they have a talented and deep bench.

  • Scott Carter

Oh yeah, I forgot about Anthony Randolph, my bad. So that’s Billups/Fields/Melo/Randolph/Amare. Hmm, not bad. Should be interesting to see.

  • Mvp23100

    It’s about damn time

  • pache

what numbers he going to be? the knicks retired number 15 i beleieve

  • http://hiphopisntdeaditsjustsleeping.blogspot.com/ @aboynamedandy

@Scott Carter yeah, it actually took me a second to think who else the Knicks got! Hell, I guess Knicks fans can’t complain. They got Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. These 2 guys alone are better than last year’s starting 5!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Caboose: Uhhh, Chauncey Billups is a defensive stalwart. They upgraded in terms of defensive (at least at the PG spot).

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

They gave up too much. Billups – even if he does play out the season – is more or less inconsequential to this trade. Besides, I’m not convinced these two will even work well together at all. Refer to Steve Kerrs thoughts on this during the ASG. They have absolutely zero depth inside – for now anyway. Oh yeah: they’re two best players? Possibly the two worst defenders at their respective positions. Amare for sure, Melo, well, maybe. Thats a key difference between Miami’s guys, Boston’s guys right there.

  • CARTEL

Please tell me the Knicks sent Curry also….

  • TheBarberShop

Damn. FINALLY we can stop HEARING about all the ‘rumors’. Congrats to the Nuggets for waiting it out and getting a good deal.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I can’t wait to see what Douglas does with a bigger role now. Bill Walker also needs more burn off the bench.
This is looking good. I’ve always liked Billups–I just hope he can develop good chemistry with Amare.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

yall boys just watch, I’m not sure yall realize just how dangerous that Amar’e-Melo combo is gonna be. Their respective games are gonna open up that much more. Lets stop pretending Galinari and Wilson Chandler were anything other than decent pieces, because they weren’t and frankly aren’t…and as defenses really started to key in on these guys there record began to tail accordingly.

  • Scott Carter

@-@aboynamedandy Well let’s see, off the bench you have Douglas, Mason, and the newly acquired Carter, Balkman, & Williams(Let’s face it, Curry’s just as good as retired, so he doesnt count). Still it’s not a bad team. Let’s see how it plays out.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Denver got a GREAT deal though–this is as good as it gets for the Nuggets. Wilson Chandler will be a future All-Star on this team. He was the player I least wanted to leave, but I’m happy for the dude–watch for him to put up 20+ points a night. Gallinari will flourish as well, and Felton, well, he maintains a starting gig.

  • 2KInsider

    73 wins?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ The Black Rick Kamla: You obviously don’t know how good Wilson Chandler will be. Just watch.

  • http://360special.blogspot.com dev0

what you’re all forgetting is that the world will not end after this season (shocking, I know) and that NY Knicks basketball will draw numerous free agents and the semi-retired and depth will be far from an issue. Like when Shaq went to Miami, like when Bron went to Miami, like when KG and Ray went to Boston. Players are going to banging on the door to suit up for this squad. If not this year, then next year or the next. This’ll be fun for a long time.

  • sam

@Scott Carter- Randolph and Curry are going to the Wolves I believe.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Toney Douglas, Bill Walker, Shawne Williams. I mean, thats every bit as good as the 3 guys who left in my honest opinion. Then maybe D’Antoni can shake the cobwebs off of my mans young Ant Randolph, and Roger Mason Jr….Then you got shhhhhhhhhh be quiet Kelenna Azubuike already back to scrimmaging with the team….please believe the Knicks went about this the right way.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Two questions: 1. Did Melo sign the extension?
    2. Does this officially make Denver JR Smith’s team? Which means he’s guaranteed 20+ shots a night hot or not. JTaylor21 will fall in love with this Denver.

  • Diesel

Curry and randolph are getting traded to minnesota

  • Diesel

Bulls should sign chandler next year

  • bashmo

Are people forgetting that Billups wanted a buyout? I don’t think he will want to play in New York.

Oh and to those wondering why they didnt wait to sign Melo in the offseason? The possiblity of a lockout next season because the absence of a CBA for the future. So the only real option they had as far as pursuing Melo was to sign him now.

On paper it seems to be alot. But players shining in New York such as Gallinari and Felton are arguably products of the D’antoni system of offense, with the exception of Chandler. But all that for Melo is worth it. Youre talking about a guy who is a top 5 player and arguably top scorer in the league. A cold blooded killer from the block with playoff experience. A guy who can potentially carry a team by himself, let alone do it with another star in Stoudemire now. With a coach like D’Antoni, getting the offense revolving around Melo and STAT will be smooth. Cant wait to see this.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

The Black Rick Kamla is delusional like Trevor Ariza.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Oh sh!t, I forgot about ‘Buike!

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

@bashmo: Melo is not a top 5 player in this league.

melo is like many great offensive players. they can play d when they feel like it and are playing on good teams. pierce and ray werent that good on D till they came to boston for example.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

The knicks remain solid if Kelenna is back to his old form. Who do they get if they trade randolph and curry to minnesota?

  • http://hiphopisntdeaditsjustsleeping.blogspot.com/ @aboynamedandy

Corey Brewer to NYK, Curry and Randolph to MIN according to Chris Broussard’s twitter.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Michael NZ…if you’re gonna call me out at least TRY to make a point…delusional like Trevor Ariza???? grow up fam

  • X

Whew!!! At least we got Corey Brewer.

  • bakers’-dozen

Melo couldn’t win in the West with Billups, KMart, JR Smith, and Camby back in the day, what makes people think he’ll win with an older Billups and Stoudamire? I mean really…the East is way toughter than the West. I don’t see them getting any higher than they would without him.

  • X (2.0)

Knicks need a Center bad. Sorry to see Chandler, Gallo and Felton go though.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

@The Black Rick Kamla: Toney Douglas, Bill Walker, Shawne Williams as good as the three that left. That’s delusional. The Ariza thing refers to LB when he shipped him out a few years back. Said he was delusional. NY, apt.

  • Scott Carter

I’m hearing that its some 3-team deal with Brewer going to New York/Curry & Randolph going to Minny, and some team(I’ve heard maybe Golden State) getting in the mix.

  • O

I’m not up on Corey Brewer. Is he ANY good? Is he going to be an upgrade at his position? And what about Buike? I’ve never seen him play. Is he worth anything?

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

GREAAAAT the two reasons i wanted Melo out of Denver was for him to not have to play with Billups or AC anymore… and what do ya know…

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

everybody talking like melo is lebron or something! way too much hype…we shall see tho

  • bashmo

@Michael NZ how is he not a top 5 player in this league? If youre going by SLAM Top 50, sure, but Melo is certainly among the best players in the league offensively. Maybe he isn’t the most defensively inclined player but that doesnt hurt the knicks, who are an uptempo, run and gun team.

@Bakers he didn’t have Camby and Billups on the same team at the same time. They got Billups in the beginning of the 08-09 campaign, after Camby had been traded to the Clippers. The Reason the Nuggets couldnt get it done in that postseason was because they ran into the Lakers and in fact, played a competitive series against the eventual champs. And then last postseason, the Nuggs were missing their Head Coach George Karl due to illness.

  • JTaylor21

Great deal NYK, when you have a chance to trade for a great player you do it. F*ck young up and coming talent, I want that right now talent. I can’t wait to watch the knicks play, just imagine how many points Melo scores playing that D’Antoni style.
Amare didn’t bring ish back, the garden officially came back on 02/21/11. If the current playoff standings hold up, the 3 seed Chi vs 6 seed NYk matchup is gonna be one for the ages. CAN’T WAIT!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Michael NZ…those guys have all of the talent of those 3, period. Funny how no one was singing the praises of them guys a year ago and as soon as the Knicks go on an early season deep winning streak they are just invaluable pieces. Anyone whos watched any Knicks games of the last few weeks realizes those guys couldn’t cut it if immediate playoff success was the goal

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

Hahahaha, top 5, Melo? Lebron, Kobe, D Rose, Dwight, Pau, CP3, Wade, Durant, Dirk. All better than Melo, and it’s not even close. It’s one thing to be a fan, but don’t be delusional.

  • slimshady

its a bitter-sweet deal for everybody. nuggs lost their franchise player, and the knicks lost all their “benchdepth”. it was sad to see felton go, but this is gonna be a HELLUVA team.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Omar: Brewer is a nice player. I’ve been watching quite a bit of Minny lately and he’s a solid defender who can spread the defense and shoot the J.

  • T-Money

but still… that ‘core’ the knicks had was looking at .500 dead in the eyes. can’t be afraid to shake thins up, there was essentially nothing to disrupt really

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Since when is Pau Gasol even remotely considered a top 5 player?

  • danmcdirty

we are oficially a contender again. go knicks!

  • O

Aight. Good looking on the insight Teddy.

  • Dagger

Melo and Amare, together, make Knicks basketball fully relevant again. That was Walsh’s mission when he first came to NYC, and he’s accomplished it. The Knicks will be a story (in a good way) every night, and I think we’ll see some amazing things from those two offensively. Billups will likely be a short-term rental before Paul or Williams come to town, but as a short-term rental he’ll probably excel. The next question you’d have to ask is whether the Knicks can contend for a championship with this core. My gut feeling is that they can’t, because Melo and Amare simply aren’t good passers or two-way players like Wade and Lebron, while I have only limited faith in D’antoni. Still, at the very least the Knicks will be a serious threat in the playoffs and, should Paul or Williams come to town, will at least have the talent to win it all in a league with increasingly stacked teams. The Nuggets did well to wait for the best deal, and ultimately I think this is one of the very few blockbuster trades that actually help all participants. Hell, this even helps the Nets: they were never going to go anywhere by gutting their team for Melo.

  • Fat Lever

@ Teddy, not top 5, but I’ll take him over Melo. He is arguably the best PF in bball right now.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

    @T-Money cosigned.

  • JTaylor21

It’s not about defense because the Knicks aren’t winning ish even with a prime Pip as long as Mike No D’ Antoni is the coach. They won’t win a chip but they can put a real scare into any of the east top 4 seeds if they meet in the playoffs. It’s all about the garden and basketball in NY getting back into the limelight. I’m gonna have to clear room on the DVR for knicks game.

  • riggs

The Black Rick Kamla is one of a handful of people actually making sense in this thread. Wilson chandler was going to test out the free agency (which is why the knicks started throwing him INTO trade talks actually). Gallo was great for awhile but his inconsistency and injuries will prove this trade valuable. Felton was the only one that actually stings a little only because i have no idea how chauncey is going to play in this system. Mozgov has been sitting on the bench since a few weeks ago, they didnt want to trade him because he could still be useful for either them or another trade but oh well. I have a feeling the knicks arent done (apart from getting corey brewer)

  • jay rose

co-sign gametime. i’m sure gallo, chnadler, felton and that dude who got crammed on by blake are nice guys ‘n all… but get real. melo is in that exclusive league of players who opposing coaches actually spend time figuring out how to stop. chauncey is a future hall of famer. amare will more room to operate and even more of a reason to get up in the morning. if i were a knicks fan, i would not be whining.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Well, at least MSG has starpower again after such a long time without it.
Feel sorry for Raymond who was playing well in that system and Chandler who, if memory serves correctly, was fantastic a few seasons ago for the Knicks. Oh well, we’ll see on the court how well Melo (their best post option now) and Amare (plays more face-up anyway) co-exist.
Wonder what Candace thinks of Shelden and his continued tour d’USA?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    lol at “Melodrama”. well played

  • http://bashmo_4@hotmail.com bashmo

can you believe this guy? How am i delusional for claiming Melo to be a top 5 player when you say PAU is a top 5 player? Even DRose, who only this year has really levelled up his game, should no be put in to the same tier as Carmelo. Enough disrespecting Melo. Please…

  • Dagger

As for Melo being a top-5 player: that level belongs to multi-dimensional players. Melo isn’t a great passer or defender, nor is he an especially efficient player. He’s great in the clutch though, and he’s a competent rebounder so in my book he’s definitely top-10.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

what number is he going to wear?

  • Knicks Éminence Grise

In all seriousness, Azabuke showed some flashes of greatness in Golden State when healthy. Brewer’s jumpshot is inconsistent, but he’s a great finisher on the break. Corey had a great dunk on Derek Fisher not too long ago. Billy Walker and Williams will fill up the slack nicely. Toney Douglas, who’s underrated, will step up too.

  • Scott Carter

The only negative, in my opinion, was that Gallinari had to leave. I really liked that guy, and he was a great fit in D’Antonis system. Oh well, Carmelo will be awesome in the big apple. Glad he’s finally home!!!

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

of course melo is a top-5 player, redeem teamer gold medal winner and ncaa champion.. dudes a winner he’s a beast.

  • O

What really sucks about this trade is that you know Donnie Walsh wasn’t on board with it. Isiah Thomas convinced Dolan to overrule Walsh and pull the trigger. That said, I doubt Walsh will be back, and honestly, I love that man for what he’s done for my team. Not only did he give them back a little dignity, but he’s made SMART moves as far as trades, draft picks and signing Stat. Now we have to prepare for the inevitable return of the sexual harasser.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

yea he has so much upside as a 6’10″ shooter, what a stroke. i can live with chandler and felton moving on but gallo has so much potential.

  • http://bashmo_4@hotmail.com bashmo

Not necessarily. I can arguably say the same for Durant. He is neither a particularly skilled passer or defender. And look at it this way. When Dirk Nowitzki won the MVP in 2007, wasn’t he one of the top 5 players in the game? But was he really one bit more multi-dimensional then than he is now? He is more efficient than ever, but I wouldn’t say he currently a top 5 player. But yes, you are right, he is very clutch and a great rebounding 3.
In the end my point is that Carmelo is worth all that New York gave away once you get back to how great of a player he is and how young he is. He is turning only 27 soon. So he’s got plenty of skill and midrange jumpers to feed small forwards across the league on a nightly basis.

  • Scott Carter

Umm, are you SERIOUS when you say Isiahs coming back to the Knicks?!?(someone get me a bucket.)

  • JTaylor21

I think we can all agree on one thing; the east is a beast! Damn, the big 4 in Bos, Big 3 in Mia, Booz/Rose/Noah in Chi-town, DHow in Orl, Melo/Amare in NY and the underrated Horford/JJ/JSmoove combo in Atl. The EC playoffs for the foreseeable future is going to be off the richter scale.

Anthony Carter is still technically a player in the NBA?!?! Wow! The Knicks stole him in this deal!

  • Dagger

On Melo as a top-5 player: Lebron, Wade and Kobe are fantastic all-around players. They’re great scorers, great defenders, good rebounders at their positions and great passers (yes, even Kobe, when he wants to be). They’re also reliable in the clutch – there’s a reason they’re in everybody’s top three. Maybe it’s controversial but I’d say Howard is a solid #4 this year, as his offence has finally caught up to his defence. I’d slot Durant in the #5 slot because he’s such a monster scorer and his all-around game is pretty underrated: no, he’s not a great defender or passer but he’s more consistent in these categories than Carmelo. Now beyond this top five, I’d also argue that there are additional players that may not have Carmelo’s offensive repertoire, but still have a greater impact on the game and are in that respect better players. People are making fun of the guy who said Gasol is better than Melo, but I’d argue that when healthy and motivated Gasol probably does have more of an impact on a game than Melo. Either way there’s a persuasive case to be made (see articles in truehoop, wagesofwins and roundball mining company) that Melo’s good-but-not-great advanced statistics, poor passing game and spotty defence keep him out of the game’s top-five.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

The bench is going to be fine with Azubuike, Brewer and Walker will fill in fine off the bench for Chandler and Gallo but one guy not being mentioned is Timofey Mozgov. Turiaf has heart but Mozgov has some skills for a 7 footer.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

top 5 swingmen are Kobe, Lebron, Durant, Melo, and D Wade… Dwight, Nowitzki, and Gasol are for another story.

knicks are fun but not a contender. cmon now. no with this roster. people are talking about the heat having no bench and they can put miller and haslem off the pine when theyre healthy. ny got douglas, walker, and i don’t even know who’s the back up big.

  • jose

    1) Knicks Gave up way too much i thin(Denver gota great deal outta it)
2)Sucks for Billups, he’s gonna look to buy-out watch or retire. If not and , i dont think that even Billups could get NY to play D Consistently w/ D’antoni’s system.
3)THANK GOODNESS IT’S DONE! but now we have to deal with all the team analysis of the new-look Knicks!

  • JTaylor21

Melo is a legit top-10 player. There was a time when Dirk and Nash were considered top-10 even top-5 players and those guys couldn’t stop a dead man from scoring so Melo gets in. Also if KD’s non defensive a** is labeled a top-5 player, why isn’t Melo. They are the exact same player, both are good rebounders, great scorers but they suck on the defensive end and can’t create for others.

@ T-Money: Well the Knicks also have Shawne Williams and Azubuike (soon) coming off the bench, and besides, D’Antoni plays with a 7-8 man rotation anyways. But you’re right in that this team has no interior defense other than Ronny Turiaf. Oh, I almost forgot about Renaldo Balkman too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Knicks should really consider signing Earl Barron again. He’s a great rebounder and played well for NY last year. Shame they let him go.

  • TR324

At first i thought the Knicks gave up too much, but Melo’ is one of the best in the game. In my opinion probably top 6 or 7 guys in the L. We gave up Danilo which sucks, but i mean its Carmelo. I dont like Billups over Felton, but what can you do. The Knicks wont make any noise this year, but long-term this is great. They wont lose anything this year.

LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Dwight, Paul, Durant, Rose, Melo. I’d stick him a solid 7 or 8.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Add Dirk and Pau to that list Caboose and we’re good.

  • coggie13

@micheal NZ i hear ya man.. Sad sad day for us New Zealand brethren

  • Hawaiian Peanut

Knicks look better, but not by much. I don’t see Melo and STAT meshing together all that well and Chauncey is just a rental, if even, so I don’t see why Knicks fans are debating how well he’ll do in the D’Antoni system. Denver got a great deal and can finally play good team basketball. Melo is my boy but his ball hoggin tendencies were frustrating. Denver plays best when they play team basketball, and now they have no choice but to play team ball now.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

This will obviously bring the Knicks back to contender status in the long run cause I believe they will sign a big time point guard and well as more pieces to make them a deeper team in the 2012 offseason.
But I gotta be honest, as a Bulls fan, with a possible Bulls/Knicks showdown in the first round looming, I was more scared of the team that whooped the Bulls twice this season than I am of this new team.
They had more depth, long range bombers, an incredibly streaky shooter in Gallo, a jack of all trades in Chandler (DePaul stand up!!), and crazy chemistry between Felton and STAT.
Granted, we haven’t seen this team yet and I may eat my words afterall. STAT + Melo = crazy offensive firepower, and you can’t sleep on Billups still, but like I said, I think overall their team was better before.

Condolences NZ,keepin them folks in my thoughts

  • Scott Carter

It’s official!! Brewer is heading to the Knicks & Randolph/Curry are heading to Minny. I still hope they start Fields at the 2-gaurd. Sounds like the better move for me.

  • Scott Carter

One thing I just thought of: Billups and Anthony are nice, but how will they play in the up-tempo D’Antoni style of basketball? Melo is still young, but to be honest I havent seen him play too much fast break ball(just sayin), and Billups is definitly getting up there in age. DONT GET ME WRONG!! I hope this works out for NY. I’m just having a hard time envisioning how they’ll fit in with the run-n-gun Knicks offense. Just sayin.

  • KSupreme

This team is stacked, brewer, great addition, Chauncey will tear it up in dantonis system, landry fields, melo, and amare will become the big three of new York! It’s unfortunate that all stars only want to play with all stars…whatever happened to beating the best to be the best? It’s a beauty to see but it sucks how every other team is just a bunch of punching bags for these high caliber teams….we need a hero to rescue the league…a player that can fearlessly lead a team against these monsters….honestly thought lebron was the one…make way for Blake griffin (Michael Jordan) and Eric Gordon (Scottie pippen)…..jk

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Here’s a scary thought – imagine if NY sign Dwight Howard as a free agent on 2012 instead of Paul or Williams?
Melo, Amare and Howard would easily be the best frontcourt in the NBA.

  • KSupreme

Melo has played in a high tempo system for the USA where d’antoni was an assistant and Chauncey played for USA where d’antoni was an assistant but didn’t travel with them to turkey…all will be just fine in knickerbocker land…and back when Chauncey played for Detroit and they faced off against a d’antoni coached Phoenix team led by Nash, the games were back and forth battles with Chauncey matching Nash

  • hambone

but melo said he would be playing for the nuggs at the allstar game

  • Liam (In Australia)

New York lost too much. Losing Felton is gonna hurt ‘em more than they think…

  • KSupreme

Before we pass any judgement on whether or not the coaching system will meet the players style…..let’s watch a few games hahaha…..remember when Miami lost it’s first few games…we all thought they were a flop

  • Scott Carter

Would you agree that(probably) the best starting lineup as of now for the Knicks is: PG-Chauncey Billups, SG-Landry Fields, SF-Corey Brewer, PF-Carmelo Anthony, C-Amare Stoudemire. What you think?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

It seemed like all the other teams were in a holding pattern waiting to see how the Melo situation played out.
Now that there’s been a resolution, I expect a few more teams to make some trades.
Rumblings coming out of the Chicago Bulls media is that with the Nuggets now having a bit of a logjam on the perimeter, they might try to entice the Nuggets to give up either JR Smith or Wilson Chandler by dangling Taj Gibson and a 1st round pick.
I love Taj, but Chandler in a Bulls uni would be dope. JR too if he can keep his head on straight.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Scott Carter – I say Billups, Fields, Melo, Amare, Turiaf.
Melo wouldn’t stand a chance trying to guard Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh or Kevin Garnett in the post if he plays at the 4.
The lineup you suggested would be great for playing against smaller teams though.

  • KSupreme

    @Scott Carter…. Agreed

  • Scott Carter

@Enigmatic Thats the point I’m trying to make lol. They basically play “smallball”(remember they used Gallinari, at least I think, at the power forward before the trade). Thats why I would use ‘Melo at my 4.

  • KSupreme

Sounds like nuggets have all the pieces people want lol…they were an amazing team healthy…all this all star playing with all stars or big threes caused melo to leave which eventually led to the whole team disbanding….what a shame

  • Scott Carter

Btw, dunno bout you but I can’t wait to see the reaction ‘Melo gets when he plays in Denver again. Yikes!!

  • KSupreme

The Knicks definitely need a post to put amare in the 4, by 2012, take Dwight over dwill, any point guard can create with the front court of Dwight, melo, and amare…..the question is…..can man child handle keyword: UPTEMPO?

  • HAMMER

FINALLY! Glad this sh*t is done and over with!

  • KSupreme

100% he will get his boos, i think Chris bosh’s exit was light weight compared to Melos

  • doyouwantmore

I hope Chauncey can defend the 1 through 5. Nah, just playin’ the Knicks are looking better than they have in a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time.

  • http://nba-point-forward.si.com/ datkid

this was a bad idea for ny. props to denver though.

yeah chauncey couldn’t really get the nuggets to play great defense…the knicks will be terrible defensively. Plus you had a great developing pg that you traded for one that’s DEFINITELY leaving so you could gamble on somebody else..not necessairly a good decision .and melo and stat are both kinda ballhogs, just they’re personality combination is gonna be weird.

  • http://nba-point-forward.si.com/ datkid

and yes he will get boooed….which isn’t necessairly fair bc he helped his team out a lot more than lebron did.

  • Scott Carter

Hmm, I think how Melo and Amare coexist will have to be seen first. I think they’ll be ok, but it’s an interesting point. As for Denver, I definitly like what they got. And people don’t forget, WE STILL GOT THREE DAYS TILL THE TRADE DEADLINE ENDS!!! In other words, we may see a looooot more deals before its all over.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

How long before the Knicks sack Antoni? Two years? Three? Not a chance the Knicks will win a championship with his coaching.

Please let people calm their expectations and let Maeloman do well. MSG usually makes opponents better it seems.

  • Mike From Spain

Knicks should get next year a center who can run (is D Howard good playing uptempo?) and Ricky Rubio on a rookie salary :-) His speciality is the fast break.

  • whooo!

Knicks aren’t better than Atlanta or Orlando, which is why I find the “contender” talks absolutely hilarious. It’s still good for them because of the hype and excitement it creates, as well as the playoff buzz and a TON of money to be made off it. They’ll be fun to watch in D’Antoni’s no-defense system, but I just don’t feel the championship hype is fair because they’ll be ragged on when they fail to win a ring, when in reality that’s not what should be expected of this team.

  • RT Firefly

The Knicks had no rebounding and their D, though shoddy, depended on those young guys and mostly quick hands and legs. That was before the trade. Now they still have no rebounding, even less D, no true big guy, a 34 year old point guard that doesn’t run and a small forward who needs to have the ball exclusively to score his 25. The Knicks also lost a ton of very good outside shooters.
Me thinks there is a very good chance of not even making the playoffs.

On the other hand, it’ll be exciting to see how this works out.

  • el_larsen

melo?he shoots the ball well.no defense.
dantoni ‘s teams shine ,make fun ballgame but never wins title.
offense and melo sell jerseys, but defense wins trophys.

What about chauncy?he said he loves the city of denver so much he ‘d buyout if traded!!lol

dont mind losing Chandler and Galla, shame about Felton but the system always makes PG’s look better anyway. Couldn’t pass up a deal for a legit top player. It’s the next step towards a championship-a few more steps to go.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

YEAH! THROW YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR KNICKAS! It was a GREAT DAY for the Knicks franchise! Carmelo Kiyan Anthony…the PRODIGAL SON has returned to the MECCA of BASKETBALL! I lookin’ forward to Melo, Smooth, and Stat to start clickin! Yes, I see all you Knick haters chirpin! I don’t mean to rain on your on your hatorade parade but I must say…I CAN’T WAIT for my Knicks to KNOCK OUT an/your overconfident team in the first round! To all my real Knickas out there join me, and lean back, lean back, lean back, lean back! LOL!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The ORANGE beat Villanova and the Knicks got Carmelo…IT WAS A MOTHER FACKIN GOOD DAY!

  • Charles

Yay Melo got what he wanted….

  • Zabba

Why did Melo want to leave? This is totally news to me.

  • Fat Lever

@Bashmo, can you read? No, seriously. Direct quote: “@ Teddy, not top 5, but I’ll take him over Melo.”.

  • Max

I applaud myself for reading this.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

NY isn’t built to win right away, but with all the draft picks they got in this deal and Melo and Stat to build around they have a VERY bright future. Along with that, NY is one of the most highly coveted basketball locations in the league, so they could convince almost anyone to sign there. They’re a 45-50 win team as is, and they have a very good chance to improve over the next several years.

  • el_larsen

expect melo and the knicks to never win a ring!!
    ddddeeeeeeeffffeeeeeesssssse

  • RunNGun

Great deal for the Nuggets (rebuilding won’t take too long) and Wolves (needs a guy like Randolph, will waive Curry). So-so for the Knicks. Knicks, IMO, gave up too much for Melo. Like Miami, their bench is spread too thin. Bring on the D-Will/CP3 circus in the offseason… it never ends.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Corey Brewer, Landry Fields, Ronny Turiaf, Shelden Williams…those 4 guys alone in any rotation could play just as good or better defense than the former squad. Then you have to think that Carmelo is actually motivated to play basketball….c’mon son this is such a win for the Knicks its not even funny

  • Reggie Miller

I think Carmelo made a mistake. Instead of the ditching Denver, you need to build roots. Look at me. Even though I never won a chip I was the franchise guy. The best pacer ever. And still no hall of fame!!?? Sigh always a bridesmaid never a bride. YEA BOI!

  • RunNGun

Wayno: Knicks didn’t get any draft picks. They gave up their 2014 first rounder, and 2012+2013 second rounders (from GSW). They don’t own any picks for the next few years.

  • holiday

Wayno, Denver got all the draft picks FYI!

  • holiday

Personally I think the Knicks need a new coach now, these players and that system won’t work. D’antoni is a good coach, but I don’t think this all fits!

  • bakers’-dozen

Billups will be more loved in NYC than Melo will be. When he walks after this year (or earlier), you’ll be kicking yourselves. He’s better than people think. When you see him in person, he’s just amazing…

  • Riggs

felton and billups contract ends at the same time folks. So basically what some of you are saying is that felton > billups which would be fine had felton not fallen off recently.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Knicks ought to have Bernard King introduce Carmelo Anthony on Knicks Legends Night this Wednesday, when he comes out in that #30 jersey at THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA!

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

I just don’t like the idea of trying to build a whole new team in the middle of the season.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

@Rudy, me neither but I guess they felt the pressure to do so. If anyone thinks this Knicks team has a chance to make any noise in the playoffs, I have an Island to sell you. But the building blocks are there, question marks, too. But when is the last time a Knicks team had this much hope?

  • matthew

    Gall0 + Mozgov for Bargnani and miami’s 1st rounder.

  • matthew

or Gallo straight up for Bargnani (other pieces would be needed obviously)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

man all the knick crazy’s were bad enough when just Amar’e was playing well. Now ya’ll not gonna shut up scoring 110 and givin up 105 a game, atleast these offensive heavy players are playing for an offense heavy coach

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

Can U people tell me what exactly makes Durant a better defender than Melo? where are u people getting this from? Cuz there is not one moment in which i have came away thinking, hey, KD can play D…. especially when he faces Melo

  • http://google J-Ro

Will Billups really be a good pick up for them? Considering his age? I’m guessing they’re going to use him until CP3/D-Will become available then bye-bye Chauncey.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kevin Durant has a net positive impact on his teams defense. Melo has the opposite effect.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

My bad, brain fart. No picks for NY. They still have some cash to spend don’t they?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

NY can’t make any moves this season without giving up equal contract value, so no they don’t. Next summer, 2012, they are ripe for a big move though, basically will only have Melo, Stoudemire, and presumably Fields on their roster.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Ted

Myles laughed at me. Shooting Js is pretty much all Brewer did at Florida..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Ted

    =( Or so i thought.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Brewer also owns the Timberwolves record for most consecutive games with a 3 pointer. He’s not a great shooter by any stretch, but he isn’t “that bad”

  • Nate

they will do good, to late in the season tho! Melo should have waited till free agency. THey will still be a east contender.

  • TRIMEGADON

so carmelo to the knicks , championship contenders or not the league sure got on fire….its a wrap, god bless us all good luck and good night.-

Brewer from the field this year: 38.4% and from three: 26.3% (career 40 and 31). Good luck with that floor stretching.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

O, buike would be a great fit for NY if he ever regains his form post-injury. dude can stroke the 3, go to the hole with aggression, and is an above-average defender. BUT, it all depends on how he recovers

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

here’s a sneak peak at his game. i know it’s 3 years ago and not much, but buike was pretty unknown outside of the bay:

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Florida was four years ago. As of now, he’s shooting 38.4% from the field, 26.3% from three and 70.8% from the line. His TS% is 47.2 and his eFG% is 41.4. All of these numbers are far below average. His shot has no balance, consistent form or range. He is “that bad”.

  • fernandogarcia

It is not going to happen this year… if it took the heat a good 3 months to gel and start playing the basketball they were expected to play it would have to take the knicks even longer considering they gave up 4 of their starters..

  • FoCo

As a Nuggets fan…people are delusional if they think Melo is going to make the Knicks a serious serious threat in the East. Dude may get you to the playoffs where he will hop into his 5-26 shooting ways all while leaving his defense on the bus.
The only sad part about all this is the Nuggets doing Chauncey dirty once again.
