Report: Carmelo Anthony Officially Traded to New York Knicks

Looks like the Melodrama is finally coming to an end. The Denver Post has the story: “The Carmelo Anthony trade saga is finally over. The Nuggets traded Melo to the New York Knicks tonight, a league source said. Denver gets Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors’ 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors’ 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash. Anthony will go to New York, along with Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. Anthony was not at the Nuggets’ practice as the team resumed workouts following the All-Star break.”

I think we can all agree on one thing; the east is a beast! Damn, the big 4 in Bos, Big 3 in Mia, Booz/Rose/Noah in Chi-town, DHow in Orl, Melo/Amare in NY and the underrated Horford/JJ/JSmoove combo in Atl. The EC playoffs for the foreseeable future is going to be off the richter scale.

  • Vince5

It’s about damn time. Can’t wait to see which team is the winning one!

@michael NZ, what time of day do you do all your posting??? whenever i get on here i`m the only one on…

In all seriousness, Azabuke showed some flashes of greatness in Golden State when healthy. Brewer’s jumpshot is inconsistent, but he’s a great finisher on the break. Corey had a great dunk on Derek Fisher not too long ago. Billy Walker and Williams will fill up the slack nicely. Toney Douglas, who’s underrated, will step up too.

  • JTaylor21

Umm, Azabuke and the word “greatness”? Where’s some cyanide when you need it.

This Brewer thing would have to involve a third team as the financials would not work with Brewer for Curry and Randolph straight

Man, Miss Trachtenberg is gonna hate having to travel to Denver to see Danilo. Oh well, still some Eastern Conf. games left, and they have the dough for 1st class travel plans.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

Anthony Carter is still technically a player in the NBA?!?! Wow! The Knicks stole him in this deal!

On Melo as a top-5 player: Lebron, Wade and Kobe are fantastic all-around players. They’re great scorers, great defenders, good rebounders at their positions and great passers (yes, even Kobe, when he wants to be). They’re also reliable in the clutch – there’s a reason they’re in everybody’s top three. Maybe it’s controversial but I’d say Howard is a solid #4 this year, as his offence has finally caught up to his defence. I’d slot Durant in the #5 slot because he’s such a monster scorer and his all-around game is pretty underrated: no, he’s not a great defender or passer but he’s more consistent in these categories than Carmelo. Now beyond this top five, I’d also argue that there are additional players that may not have Carmelo’s offensive repertoire, but still have a greater impact on the game and are in that respect better players. People are making fun of the guy who said Gasol is better than Melo, but I’d argue that when healthy and motivated Gasol probably does have more of an impact on a game than Melo. Either way there’s a persuasive case to be made (see articles in truehoop, wagesofwins and roundball mining company) that Melo’s good-but-not-great advanced statistics, poor passing game and spotty defence keep him out of the game’s top-five.

The bench is going to be fine with Azubuike, Brewer and Walker will fill in fine off the bench for Chandler and Gallo but one guy not being mentioned is Timofey Mozgov. Turiaf has heart but Mozgov has some skills for a 7 footer.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

top 5 swingmen are Kobe, Lebron, Durant, Melo, and D Wade… Dwight, Nowitzki, and Gasol are for another story.

  • Dagger

Decent article saying Melo isn’t an elite player at all: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-berri/is-melo-max_b_676473.html. And to be fair, a smart defence of Melo’s elite status: http://www.hardwoodparoxysm.com/2010/08/06/incomplete-doesnt-mean-youre-not-elite/

  • T-Money

knicks are fun but not a contender. cmon now. no with this roster. people are talking about the heat having no bench and they can put miller and haslem off the pine when theyre healthy. ny got douglas, walker, and i don’t even know who’s the back up big.

  • jose

    1) Knicks Gave up way too much i thin(Denver gota great deal outta it)
2)Sucks for Billups, he’s gonna look to buy-out watch or retire. If not and , i dont think that even Billups could get NY to play D Consistently w/ D’antoni’s system.
3)THANK GOODNESS IT’S DONE! but now we have to deal with all the team analysis of the new-look Knicks!

  • JTaylor21

Melo is a legit top-10 player. There was a time when Dirk and Nash were considered top-10 even top-5 players and those guys couldn’t stop a dead man from scoring so Melo gets in. Also if KD’s non defensive a** is labeled a top-5 player, why isn’t Melo. They are the exact same player, both are good rebounders, great scorers but they suck on the defensive end and can’t create for others.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ T-Money: Well the Knicks also have Shawne Williams and Azubuike (soon) coming off the bench, and besides, D’Antoni plays with a 7-8 man rotation anyways. But you’re right in that this team has no interior defense other than Ronny Turiaf. Oh, I almost forgot about Renaldo Balkman too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Knicks should really consider signing Earl Barron again. He’s a great rebounder and played well for NY last year. Shame they let him go.

  • TR324

At first i thought the Knicks gave up too much, but Melo’ is one of the best in the game. In my opinion probably top 6 or 7 guys in the L. We gave up Danilo which sucks, but i mean its Carmelo. I dont like Billups over Felton, but what can you do. The Knicks wont make any noise this year, but long-term this is great. They wont lose anything this year.

    @AussieCrawler: I don’t really know what you mean….?
@The Black Rick Kamla: hear you. Fair point too.
@Fat Lever: thanks for speaking some sense here.

Dirty Frank: I think Minn is under the cap so finances don’t matter when taking on salaries.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

By the way, shout out to my fellow country men & women down in Christchurch who got hit hard by an earthquake today. 65 souls lost too soon… thus far. Keep ya heads up.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Dwight, Paul, Durant, Rose, Melo. I’d stick him a solid 7 or 8.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Add Dirk and Pau to that list Caboose and we’re good.

  • coggie13

@micheal NZ i hear ya man.. Sad sad day for us New Zealand brethren

  • Hawaiian Peanut

Knicks look better, but not by much. I don’t see Melo and STAT meshing together all that well and Chauncey is just a rental, if even, so I don’t see why Knicks fans are debating how well he’ll do in the D’Antoni system. Denver got a great deal and can finally play good team basketball. Melo is my boy but his ball hoggin tendencies were frustrating. Denver plays best when they play team basketball, and now they have no choice but to play team ball now.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

This will obviously bring the Knicks back to contender status in the long run cause I believe they will sign a big time point guard and well as more pieces to make them a deeper team in the 2012 offseason.
But I gotta be honest, as a Bulls fan, with a possible Bulls/Knicks showdown in the first round looming, I was more scared of the team that whooped the Bulls twice this season than I am of this new team.
They had more depth, long range bombers, an incredibly streaky shooter in Gallo, a jack of all trades in Chandler (DePaul stand up!!), and crazy chemistry between Felton and STAT.
Granted, we haven’t seen this team yet and I may eat my words afterall. STAT + Melo = crazy offensive firepower, and you can’t sleep on Billups still, but like I said, I think overall their team was better before.

  • Joe King

    yerrr sad day in NZ

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Sorry to hear about the earthquake. Glad y’all are safe. My condolences to the families of those that passed.

  • jose

So it’s gonna be Dwight,Melo,LBJ, Wade,Rose Respresenting the East next yr come ASG time. . . word. . .

Condolences NZ,keepin them folks in my thoughts

  • Scott Carter

It’s official!! Brewer is heading to the Knicks & Randolph/Curry are heading to Minny. I still hope they start Fields at the 2-gaurd. Sounds like the better move for me.

  • Scott Carter

One thing I just thought of: Billups and Anthony are nice, but how will they play in the up-tempo D’Antoni style of basketball? Melo is still young, but to be honest I havent seen him play too much fast break ball(just sayin), and Billups is definitly getting up there in age. DONT GET ME WRONG!! I hope this works out for NY. I’m just having a hard time envisioning how they’ll fit in with the run-n-gun Knicks offense. Just sayin.

  • KSupreme

This team is stacked, brewer, great addition, Chauncey will tear it up in dantonis system, landry fields, melo, and amare will become the big three of new York! It’s unfortunate that all stars only want to play with all stars…whatever happened to beating the best to be the best? It’s a beauty to see but it sucks how every other team is just a bunch of punching bags for these high caliber teams….we need a hero to rescue the league…a player that can fearlessly lead a team against these monsters….honestly thought lebron was the one…make way for Blake griffin (Michael Jordan) and Eric Gordon (Scottie pippen)…..jk

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Here’s a scary thought – imagine if NY sign Dwight Howard as a free agent on 2012 instead of Paul or Williams?
Melo, Amare and Howard would easily be the best frontcourt in the NBA.

  • KSupreme

Melo has played in a high tempo system for the USA where d’antoni was an assistant and Chauncey played for USA where d’antoni was an assistant but didn’t travel with them to turkey…all will be just fine in knickerbocker land…and back when Chauncey played for Detroit and they faced off against a d’antoni coached Phoenix team led by Nash, the games were back and forth battles with Chauncey matching Nash

  • hambone

but melo said he would be playing for the nuggs at the allstar game

  • Liam (In Australia)

New York lost too much. Losing Felton is gonna hurt ‘em more than they think…

  • KSupreme

Before we pass any judgement on whether or not the coaching system will meet the players style…..let’s watch a few games hahaha…..remember when Miami lost it’s first few games…we all thought they were a flop

  • Scott Carter

Would you agree that(probably) the best starting lineup as of now for the Knicks is: PG-Chauncey Billups, SG-Landry Fields, SF-Corey Brewer, PF-Carmelo Anthony, C-Amare Stoudemire. What you think?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

It seemed like all the other teams were in a holding pattern waiting to see how the Melo situation played out.
Now that there’s been a resolution, I expect a few more teams to make some trades.
Rumblings coming out of the Chicago Bulls media is that with the Nuggets now having a bit of a logjam on the perimeter, they might try to entice the Nuggets to give up either JR Smith or Wilson Chandler by dangling Taj Gibson and a 1st round pick.
I love Taj, but Chandler in a Bulls uni would be dope. JR too if he can keep his head on straight.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Scott Carter – I say Billups, Fields, Melo, Amare, Turiaf.
Melo wouldn’t stand a chance trying to guard Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh or Kevin Garnett in the post if he plays at the 4.
The lineup you suggested would be great for playing against smaller teams though.

  • KSupreme

    @Scott Carter…. Agreed

  • Scott Carter

@Enigmatic Thats the point I’m trying to make lol. They basically play “smallball”(remember they used Gallinari, at least I think, at the power forward before the trade). Thats why I would use ‘Melo at my 4.

  • KSupreme

Sounds like nuggets have all the pieces people want lol…they were an amazing team healthy…all this all star playing with all stars or big threes caused melo to leave which eventually led to the whole team disbanding….what a shame

  • Scott Carter

Btw, dunno bout you but I can’t wait to see the reaction ‘Melo gets when he plays in Denver again. Yikes!!

  • KSupreme

The Knicks definitely need a post to put amare in the 4, by 2012, take Dwight over dwill, any point guard can create with the front court of Dwight, melo, and amare…..the question is…..can man child handle keyword: UPTEMPO?

  • HAMMER

FINALLY! Glad this sh*t is done and over with!

  • KSupreme

100% he will get his boos, i think Chris bosh’s exit was light weight compared to Melos

  • doyouwantmore

I hope Chauncey can defend the 1 through 5. Nah, just playin’ the Knicks are looking better than they have in a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time.
