Report: Knicks Turned Down Carmelo Trade

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

With just over a week to go until the NBA’s trade deadline, there’s more pressure on the Nuggets now more than ever to deal Carmelo Anthony. Unfortunately for them, they’re still asking for too much in return for the deal to go through.

According to the NY Daily News, Denver asked New York to give up way too many valuable assets, a request that was reportedly shot down last night.

Here are the details:

Carmelo Anthony could have been a Knick Monday if only team president Donnie Walsh were willing to meet Denver’s trade demands, which one team official classified as “steep.” According to a team source close to the negotiations, “there is a deal to be made” but whether Anthony joins forces with Amar’e Stoudemire in New York between Tuesday and the Feb. 24 trade deadline likely comes down to the Nuggets either lowering their asking price or the Knicks turning over their roster to acquire one of the NBA’s top players.

The Nuggets, according to a source, are asking for three starters – including Danilo Gallinari and Raymond Felton – plus Eddy Curry’s expiring contract and at least one first-round pick. In that proposed deal, Anthony and veteran point guard Chauncey Billups would be coming to the Knicks.

You almost have to feel for the Nuggets’ front-office at this point — Carmelo Anthony wants to play for the Knicks, and they’re under little obligation to give up any of their key players to acquire his services(they could just roll dice, and wait until he’s a free agent this summer to nab him.)

Denver has nine days to come to the table with a more realistic proposal (or to find themselves a more willing trade partner.)

    get it done already!

  • Mitya

oh, and for the first time ever – FIRST

  • Mitya

I just got my comment wiped out

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

That seems like a good deal for both teams….WTF’s the problem? The Knicks would be tough with Chauncey at the point….they just don’t have enough bulk and D to be a contender, but they’d be a tough out against anyone in the East in a playoff series with Chauncey, Melo and STAT.

  • Mitya

what more do the Knicks want? They get Billups and Melo for Felton and Gallo right now, which is not a bad deal at all, and can still go for CP3 in the summer

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I hope Melo goes to the Knicks.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

The Knicks are acting stupid, trade your role players for a superstar! Melo and Amare together, those are building blocks right there, they can keep their beloved Fields, get a solid PG and a Chandler stays, what do they want more? Billups, Fields, Melo, Somebody, Amare. Sounds pretty good to me :P

“The Nuggets, according to a source, are asking for three starters – including Danilo Gallinari and Raymond Felton” Who was the 3rd starter they were asking for?

  • Zabba

Superstar is a bit over-rated. Sure you can’t win a championship without one or two of them but you also certainly can’t win games without role players. I say wait this one out.

and if they can get another solid defensive big in exchange for, say, Anthony Randolph and Sean Willams, they’ll be able to contend now

  • Riggs

i think its because of billups refusal to play anywhere else but denver, the knicks knows that if they do accept theyre going to be looking for a point guard right after. Although i hate their refusal of giving up gallo, he’s not that good!

  • Flight

Why would the knicks pull the trigger on this, and give up Gallo when they are going to get Melo via free agency anway? Although Chauncey sweetens the deal the Knicks have never shown interest in him anyway. They’ll very likely get Melo in free agency and maybe have a shot at Chris Paul.

  • Kas

In the system the knicks are running I’d take Felton over Billups. Shoot first-pgs don’t go over well with Mike D’. And Billups is most def. a shoot first pg

No that’s a good deal for nuggets. Melo is an offensive power house but he is below average defender. Knicks should just wait till the summer. He’ll be there

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

All things considered, this constant “what if” scenario rumor continuum has to wear down the current players being discussed. The Knicks seem to be hesitant about making this pragmatic move to acquire Melo, but there scheme to hold out for Melo until summer could blow back in their faces. Melo in a Knicks uniform will restore prestige to a storied franchise, but I beleive the Nuggets are going to trade Melo to the Rockets. If they miss out on the opportunity to gain additional assets and draft picks, heads should roll in the Denver front office.

  • Marvin

@Eboy, what are you talking about? Felton has been outplaying Billups the whole season and has great chemistry with Amare on the court. Billups is just gonna keep looking for his shot rather than setting up the pick and roll with Amare.

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

Knicks need to just wait it out.

  • X

My Knicks should definitely wait until the summer. That’s way too many assets to send to Denver when, if Melo really wants to come here, he can just wait till this season is finished.

The new CBA will never lower the salary of the top stars in the league because NBA Elite players create 99% of all league associated revenue (ticket sales, t.v. viewership, sneaker and jersey sales etc.) and they won’t stand for a reduction in salary.

Plus if we get Paul, then bring Felton off the bench, along with signing DeAndre Jordan or Marc Gasol NYC will be unstoppable.

  • ek

Knicks are dumb. even if the third starter is chandler, MAKE THE TRADE! why hold on to decent players for 1/2 a season in a trade to get a proven great and a proven decent pg!! you have to give up the pg to get cp3 later anyways! and fields can play for chandler, galinari’s spot is going to melo! IT WORKS!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

The Nuggets are going to get screwed. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem like that bad of a deal if the Knicks are getting Billups and Melo. Don’t know who the 3rd starter is but it’s likely Fields.

  • http://http//portlandfan1203.blogspot.com Karley

Whats the problem with this deal? Seems like a good deal for both teams.

  • glovechops

its all part of the knicks marketing ploy… They know the Nuggets are about to get very desperate in the last few days before the trade deadline… a deal will get done, its just a matter of time… The Knicks just dont want to have to put all of their sugar in the pot if at all possible. Gallo and Felton are big pieces for them right now, you cant blame them for attempting to keep them, dont forget about Wilson Chandler i know Denver wants him too… But keeping those guys keeps them from making off season moves… although cp3 in the offseason would be amazing, and they could make chauncey a role player for another year so he can retire a knick… either way the Nuggets get the ass-end of the deal… MELO IS GOOD AS GONE @ DENVER.

  • http://youtube/use/Uncle05Sam Earl

    Get it done.

  • TheBarberShop

Hopefully, the Rockets can bring him in (I still have hope). Also, hopefully, he will sign an extension this summer (I want to believe!)

  • riggs

i guarantee you that raymond felton would ask to be traded if he comes off the bench.

  • TSmoove

Its just goin to be funny when this trade doesn’t go down and then Melo signs the extension with Denver then the outrage will begin

  • EtheKnickFan

    @Tsmoove –Yep.

  • Jeff H

I hope the knicks don’t make the trade before the deadline, banking on that they will get him in the off season anyways. Then he pulls a Lebron and doesn’t go there. You can say what you want, but he is leaving a lot of money on the table if he doesn’t go there before free agency.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Knicks are smart for turning this down. If the deal was for say, Gallo, Felton, Chandler, Curry and draft picks for Melo and Billups, then the Knicks are better off standing pat.

  • Red Star

Why does Denver think their holding a Royal Flush when really they only have a pair? SMH

  • Stephen

  • Stephen

he Knicks franchise is officially annoying me, how do you reject a deal for Carmelo….smh the nuggets want Gallinari, Curry, Raymond Felton and a first round draft pick for Melo and Billups… are you kidding me…. I loose respect for the organization. They must not want to win… THE KNICK SHOULD JUST BLOW UP THE WHOLE GARDEN AND START FROM SCRATCH,. AND HIRE BRAND NEW PEOPLE. lol maybe they can steal the spurs whole management..

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

knicks fans are delusional, but i supposed it was caused by the futility the last decade.

  • dsleepy

knicks gonna regret this when melo ends up getting traded somewhere else with the extension. he already made it known he wants that $$$, and that trumps his desire to play in nyc
