Rick Carlisle: ‘Dirk Nowitzki Should Be the MVP’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Over the last few years, the MVP race in the NBA has turned into one big PR campaign by players, coaches, teams and entire fan bases.

In virtually every gym around the L, you’ll hear fans chant “MVP” for the star of the team; the truly special talents even hear the chants in enemy territory (see: Derrick Rose last night in Los Angeles). As for teams and coaches, they go directly to the voting members of the press to present the case for their guys.

Head coach Rick Carlisle strategically used the Mavs’ lone trip to Madison Square Garden this season to push Dirk Nowitzki’s candidacy, following a win over the Knicks on Wednesday night (during which Dirk put up 29 points and snatched 11 boards.)

CBS Sports has the quotes:

“I sense that he’s building each game on the last and that we’re headed the right direction with this thing,” Carlisle said. “And talk about MVP candidates, if you look at what happened to us when he was out, if you look at his plus-minus, I think he’s the number one plus-minus guy in the the entire league. Based on that, he should be the MVP. That means he’s more valuable to our team than any other star is to theirs. And so his presence on the floor and his healthy presence is huge for us.”

“Dirk’s a unique guy,” Carlisle said. “There’s nobody who’s worked on developing his game more than he has in the history of this league. I put him up against (Larry) Bird and all these guys who have the great work ethics and reputations as hard workers. There’s a reason the ball goes in the basket. That’s because he’s great and he’s put in the time and the hours.”

Nowitzki is a strong candidate to win the second Maurice Podoloff trophy of his career, but injuries have slowed down his momentum. The competition for the award this season is extremely fierce, with Kevin Durant, DRose, Amar’e Stoudemire and LeBron James being some of the other leading candidates.

We’re not even at the All-Star break yet, and already we must deal with this issue. Prepare for things to get much worse as the season moves into the latter stages.

Biggest difference between Bird and Dirk? Bird actually came through in the playoffs when it mattered.

  • http://masterx1983@hotmail.com marchalmadness

    Lebron for MVP!
cleveland now suck and he’s the leader of miami

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    Dirks no MVP, this year.
All that time he missed is not a positive. Fck it, just give it to D Rose. Right now, he deserves it.

  • http://slamonline.com Caboose

Let’s make this short. Dirk is not the MVP.

  • MUBWAR

no he will never be MVP again. LBJ, Rose, D3, Durantula and Westbrook should all be ahead of him.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Westbrook? Chris Paul has outplayed him twice in the last 10 days. Once on one leg. Rose is the favourite for MVP, Durant had a slow start, Bron’s start was worse than slow. Dwight Howard is the only other guy, but I don’t think Orlando will win enough games.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

If Rose wins, my head is going to grow even bigger than it is now. I never doubted him when he said it.

  • http://www.slamoline.com Max

    Actually, Varajoa should be MVP.
With him Cleveland won 8 games (1 against Boston).
He gets injured, they haven’t won a game ever since.

  • scott

    Carlisle is high.
Rose has worked harder. Look how much his game has improved since last season. He has only been in the league 3 years and he has improved every aspect of his game ten fold.
And no, LBJ won’t win it because of the cast of characters he has now surrounded himself with.

    Rose for MVP.
Thibs for coach of the year.

  • scott

Carlisle is high if he thinks Dirk is “improved” and works “harder”.

  • KING

do we have to go back to the warriors series and how he choked? @marchalmadness dont lie to yourself

  • Double J

hahhaha i just read an article about why Dirk should be left of the All star team just yesterday. What a situation mr. nowitzki is in

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Dwight, Dirk, Rose, LeBron/Wade, Paul. That’s how it is IMO, with noone being the clear leader

  • riggs

chris paul should be the mvp and im not even a fan of his. What would happen if Derrick had the hornets?

  • http://360special.blogspot.com/ dev0

with no “clear cut favourite” emerging early in the season, it could get ugly. Rose, Durant, Dwight or even Kobe. Arguments will be fierce

  • connor

    don’t forget amare

  • Omar

I was just thinking about yesterday’s article about Gasol and basically the comments implied that he’s soft which is true for him and Dirk. No team with the big man who plays like a perimeter player as the best player has and will never win a chip.

MVP: Paul > LBJ > Rose

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Riggs, I agree. Although I am a fan of his.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Knicks are 3 games above .500, Amar’e is not in the conversation. a 6 seed with the MVP, and he is not having even a career year let alone an MVP year, please

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

If the Knicks were 6th in the West, I would look at it a little different. To be 6th in the West they would have to be at leat 8 games over 500, and more so at the end of year.
I’m agreeing with you a little too much lately, nbk, and I don’t like it.

  • http://slamonline.com MVPballer

I wouldnt say that Dirk plays like a perimeter player. He’s developed a pretty reliable post game after he came into the NBA. He has some nice hooks and post rolls.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

lol basically if i don’t say anything even remotely negative about the Hornets you have agreed, for the most part

  • robb

Carlisle’s on drugs or something. Rose works just as hard and it shows. @ peter that’s right.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    Yeah, that sounds about right.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Other then San Antonio, with Dirk in the lineup, Dallas has been the best team in the league. That’s a pretty good indication of a very valuable player, if not the most valuable.

  • Joblo

U could put rose on any team and they will be a contender. The guy simply makes others around him better. Can u imagine if he had a shooting gaurd to pass to right now…

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Act like Dirk hasn’t dropped 50 in a playoff game.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Too bad the Spurs play such “team basketball”, and not just 1 of their guys stand out.. IMO I think D.Rose is mvp so far, and Durant and Dirk are right there too.

  • Omar

    @MVPballer
I wasn’t talking about his offensive game. His offense is complete. I was talking about his lack of toughness, defense and boards. 10 boards and a couple of blocks should be manadtory for any over 6’10.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Where’s the guy who keeps bigging up Dampier? This would make a perfect oppurtunity. LOL

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

Okay Rick, so he’s the MVP of the Mavs this year. Happy now?

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

dirk is legitimately an MVP candidate. Mavs totally fell apart with him out of the lineup. people choose to remember what they want to remember, which is sad.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

on another note, i never understand why coaches are always doing this sort of campaigning. do they get extra cash if one of the players win the MVP?

  • slamfan4life

Uhh no? Dirk means a lot, but Drose is doin it without 2 solid players all year

    SORRY DIRK

  • larrylegend

where’s darksaber when u need him?!?

  • Harlem_World

3 man race for me: D Rose, Lebron and Durant. In that order right now.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Good for Jim Carey, bigging up his star player, but Rose would get my vote.

  • http://google c_cantrell

only 3 players should seriously be considered for the mvp this season.. lbj, rose, and durant.. and howard should also be noticed but not seriously considered.. not this year.. and dirk should be looked at as a 6th or 7th place in the race.. my own opinions anyway

  • jay rose

Lets all be honest here DROSE deserves it. Since day 1 hes put up MVP status

  • Double J

i can’t seem to post on the forum where everyone is talking, but i’ll get it out there anyway. i’m loving ‘the nerve’ saying i ran just cuz i dont sit on an internet forum all day. as for this whole dress code thing, we tend to express ourselves through our clothing. in a way it helps mold our identity. by limiting what someone can wear and forcing them into conformity, a person loses a part of themselves. a philosopher should be able to understand these things.

  • jakethesnake

Dirk should be MVP nuff said watch the Bulls choke in the playoffs

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Yao Ming 4 MVP!!

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

He will be considered but even I, as a Dirk fan, have to admit that there are other guys out there with better stats.
To all the Dirk hatters from yesterday:
‘Get over the two playoff series where he wasn’t right on point and look at his total resume and then, if you understand the game, you should admit that he always deserves to be in cosideration for MVP.’

  • Shem

Amar’e started hot but now the Knicks are barely over .500, he doesn’t deserve MVP

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

@Peter – biggest difference between Dirk and Bird is the players that surround him and the time they played together
@scott – you can’t compare improvement of a guy that’s in the spring of his career and a guy that is in the autum(golden) of his career
@King – get over it and look how many playoff series he dominated and
what has the GS-series to do with this years MVP considerations
@Omar – I respect your opinion but rebound statistic say nothing about your toughness as a competitor but when you play a playoff series basically on one leg against the lakeshow that says someting

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

@ Rick Carlisle – shut up your MVP chant is as much needed as the ones you hear in Chicago, LA, New York…
    I hate this s”’.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

MVP campaigning before the Allstar weekend; people must be bored with just watching the games, they need the added drama. What is this, American Idol?

  • paul

Something very very wrong with a coach boasting about how much worse his team is when his allstar is out. That’s just wrong.

  • the Dude

The only reason Nowinski got his first MVP
is they didn’t want Nash to have three in
a row, even though Nasty deserved another.

I think Durant or Rose should get the hardware
this season. Beacause neither of them will make
    much noise in the playoffs.

  • Everything

DROSE is not the MVP this year. He is the Most improved player though.

  • EC

the dude.. nash didnt deserve any of his

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

EC just showed that he doesn’t know the game.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

I feel this is going to be the closest MVP race in a long, long time – Rose, Amare, Dirk, Durant, LeBron, Chris Paul…

  • http://www.slamonline.com zog

MELO IS THE MVP WATCH OUT HES JUST GETTING WARMED UP

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^zog..
stupidity can only go so far bud

  • http://bulls.com Harry Twatter

    Rose!!!

  • the Dude

@speedy: you know Dirk would have a chip if refs weren’t on Flash’s jock. I agree he deserves to be considered for MVP and the rest of the season will show and prove.

  • TR

34-6 with a healthy Dirk and Tyson Chandler. 2-9 without. 6-0 against Miami, SA, Boston, and LA when Dirk plays. PER over 24 and highest +/- differential of any player in the league.

Rose has been great, but I think Dirk is more important to his team, his team is better, and he’s performing at the same level if not better than Rose is this year (scoring more when healthy, higher PER, better +/-)

  • Turk

Dirk`s not gonna win MVP, he`s gonna have to try for the Bill Russell trophy
