Shane Battier Wants to Become a High School Teacher

When he retires from the NBA, Battier envisions himself in the classroom teaching high school students. FanHouse reports: “The Houston forward is 32, and has gotten to the point where he’s thinking about what he might do when his playing days are over. The 10-year man, who becomes a free agent this summer for the first time, figures he’s got three or four seasons left before he embarks upon a new career. ‘I’ve always loved to teach,’ Battier said. ‘I could see myself as a teacher helping young people in some capacity … I’ve always thought about teaching a life skills class. There’s so much common sense that kids never learn these days, like how to balance a checkbook, how to look over a mortgage agreement or an auto lease … Teach them skills that would really make a difference in their lives.’ Battier said it would be high school students he might like to teach. And how would he want to be addressed in class? ‘If I get the teaching degree, I’ll be Mr. Battier,’ he said.”

Nice to hear the man think about his future. On another note, kind of wish he’d stay within the NBA circle and teach kids how to play defense. Maybe he can start with teaching that in Phys.Ed.

@niQ – I wonder if he’s thought about being a coach. He seems like the kind of guy that would do really well starting off as an assistant and working his way up. He’s not one of those superstars that can’t understand why mere mortals can’t just ‘get it done’ on their own. He uses strategy, smarts and angles to be effective. Those are all things that can be taught.

@Mike. Yea, I can see that. Shane is just someone who knows the ins and outs of the game. I mean, he’s not the most athletic being on the court, how else is he able to average like 1 steal and 1 block or something like that.

Battier would be a great teacher.
Has experience on many angles in life. Would be able to offer a lot of insight to kids that are biracial.

@Philosopher – he’d also be able to offer a lot of help to kids with grooves in their head.

I remember when he first entered the League, along side Pau Gasol, a well educated and polite young man talking about politics. Back then he said it would be nice to be the first black president, as he saw himself going into politics. Reading what he’s saying now, it still would be nice if he went that way. Has more common sense than many politicians…

He should be a math teacher, since you need to know a lot of it to show why he’s a good player.

He would definitely make a great teacher, especially as a positive role model. Male teachers are maddd hard to come by, I give him props for this

Didn’t he get his degree in like, Religious Studies or something like that?
Is he gonna have to go back to school to get his degree in Education?

Over those 10 years, I’ve never seen Battier play, which is a shame, as I dig players with good fundamentals.
Of course, it’s only fitting that a dude that good with X’s and O’s would also be into ABC’s.
Hope he gets to be a teacher.
(By the way, anyone else think how hard it would be to get of his classroom? No way are you sneaking by him!)

Those arent grooves in his head, he got hurt back in the day getting into a helicopter on a family vacation, his 6’8 frame was too tall, the pilot sarted up the blades too soon and he got hit a couple of times in the head…
