Andrew Bynum on the Spurs: ‘Starters Definitely Quit’

Andrew Bynum dominated in the Lakers‘ blowout victory against the Spurs, leading him to conclude that San Antonio’s players eventually quit. The LA media then took the quote and gloated with it. From the Times: “In a town noted for having no quit, Andrew Bynum added yet more embarrassing commentary on San Antonio’s collapse. He said the Spurs’ ‘starters definitely quit.’ They were certainly no match for the Lakers’ size. Bynum and those in attendance (Jerry Buss, Jim Buss, Magic Johnson and George Lopez) were probably too much for these quitters. The Spurs’ starters combined to score 29 points, and although Bynum scored only four — a dunk to start the first half and another to start the second half — he took only two shots. It was his energy, his 17 rebounds for a second consecutive game and three blocked shots that seemed to take the zip right out of the Spurs, who had won 22 straight at home. The Spurs could counter only with Tim Duncan — who appears ready to make the transition to church league basketball — and a short, fat guy in DeJuan Blair, whose head stands as tall as Bynum’s belly button. As Duncan put it later, ‘I think [Bynum] was a key to the game, his offensive rebounds, a bunch of second shots, and defensively he bothered a lot of people in the lane. Just his size was definitely the difference.’”

Wow, you play one of the best games in your career (which would be like a walk in the park for Prime Shaq) and you feel brave all of a sudden? Bynum’s talking like he’s Wilt Chamberlain or something.

  • roman

@JTaylor- why u giving Bynum a hard time. Calling it how it is. Duncan only had 2 pts. Pop quit on them too.

^^^^ Surprising who would be the first to question Bynum’s career resume when the kid played a heck of a game against the best team in the league. His work in the paint was arguably the game changer but of course, he has not accomplished much in his career, then he has no say.

  • spit hot fiyah

whoever wrote that article for the times should be looking over his shoulder for dejuan blair

  • tuxo

yeah right, tell that to your knee too bynum. you need that.

  • Bruno

co-sign JTaylor, dude needs to shut the hell up

  • JTaylor21

Dude’s talking about another team quiting and you want me to give him a break? That’s the must damming thing anyone could say about athletes and y’all are mad at me.

  • RunNGun

Bynum shouldn’t be talking. Soon, he’ll eat Stat’s nuts when Stat gives him a tomahawk jam.

  • tuxo

cosign JTaylor, damn man quitting is a strong word.

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

It’s just one game Bynum, what the hell are you talking about?? It’s not like you have defeated the spurs all year long. Who knows, but maype Pop’s playing mind games with the Lakers right now (sacrificing a loss)??

  • Ali

Hate it when guys go talking shi* in the media after a W. Drew killed them on the boards, no reason to say sh*t about them laying down. Let your game to the talking kid. Toss a few mean muggs to the opposing team fans, slang a elbow or two, get T’d up and leave it at that….Next up the ATL and MIA.

The Spurs lost one game against a good team what the Lakers have done a lot this season, so keep on playing but stop talking Andrew.
Calling them quiters is a nice way to motivate the Spurs.

god this guy’s such a homer. reason #234 why it’s hard not to hate lakers fans

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

When teams decide to pull their starters when the game gets out of hand or is out of reach, wouldn’t that be quitting? It is likely that they could pull an improbable comeback but they opt not to. Which is quitting, right?

  • knicksvet82

^^Agree with Ali on this one.

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

all Bynum said was “starters definitely quit”, whoever wrote this blew it way out of proportion. It doesn’t sound creative or funny, just mean.

  • Mike Mihalow

cosign w/ Ali as well. Bynum’s knee is definitely gonna quit on him soon.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

That would be even more embarrassing if they didn’t “quit” and still got blown out. You lose, you can’t say ish. You win and you can say what EVER you want to…

  • Josh

He has every right to say whatever he wants. If anyone actually watched the game, it was pretty clear after the first onslaught of offensive rebounds by the Lakers that the Spurs really did quit. They were not moving, not playing Spurs basketball. The Lakers delivered the knockout punch quickly and the Spurs couldn’t do anything about it. I realize you all want the kid to shut up, but he is just speaking the truth. Yesterday, the Alamo fell.

  • Fat Lever

D@mn, writers getting brolic now? Based on the Spurs playoff resume, I wouldn’t count them out just yet, Laker fans. Both Jax and Pop are able to realize that while you lose the battle, the war is what’s important.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Spurs ran into a damn buzzsaw. Lakeshow was bussin a** from bell to bell. Like Mark Jackson said, it was almost like the Heat sent their big brother lol

  • riggs

to all the laker fans who think this win proved anything, let me just say what you morons say everytime you lose. *Ahem* “its the regular season, wait until they get to the playoffs”.

  • 6marjons

pop, the spurs, the mavs, hell most of the nba all say that the lakers are the team to beat. and these games are the reason. they can put together a better 48 minutes of basketball than any other team in the league but that’s the key. the spurs have beaten them twice this year, including a game where the lakers did put 48 minutes together on the last shot, which is why the spurs are still one of the most dangerous teams in the L but this should not be a surprise that LA can blow out any team in the world should they choose to.
and this hurts saying this. im a spurs fan

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Riggs is right, you laker fans are funny. Lose to the Cavs and its “it doesn’t matter we’re coasting until playoff time.” Beat up the Spurs and its “Told yall, we’re hitting our stride, 3peat on the way!” FOH!!!

  • Pugz

Enough Spurs fans on here, go cry somewhere else haha. 3PEAT

  • Red Star

“Tim Duncan — who appears ready to make the transition to church league basketball” LMFAO! That is sooo cold!!

“Tim Duncan — who appears ready to make the transition to church league basketball — and a short, fat guy in DeJuan Blair, whose head stands as tall as Bynum’s belly button” – When did Slam start posting Youtube comments as news?

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

naw I ain’t tryna hear that regular season crap right now. We are past the All Star break. Its reppin time right now, we seen who the best team in the league is

  • Ronald

Whoever wrote this article should have the balls to put his name next to it. Instead of being a professional basketball site this place is turning to the freakig TMZ.

  • rich

the spurs are known for this the starters all played about 20 mins in that game pop waved the white flag and said its not worth it hes been doin this for over 10 years now

  • robb

“a short, fat guy in DeJuan Blair” wow, that was disrespectful. DeJuan is a good player. You only say such a thing when you’re talking about Big baby.

  • r2j

The Starters definitely quit… For now.
