Chris Bosh: Miami’s Occasional, Reluctant Center

Bosh, who has cried about not getting the ball in the post enough this season, is somewhat hesitant to play the center spot — irony alert! — despite his effectiveness down there. From the Palm Beach Post: “As much as I keep trying to run from the five,’ [Bosh] said, referring to the number associated with the position of center, “it keeps running back towards me.’ After the runs the Heat had with him in that spot Friday night, he may have no choice but to ‘embrace’ the pivot, as he later promised he would. While he is a reluctant center – preferring to play power forward with a small forward style – he was by far the Heat’s most effective ‘five’ against Philadelphia. In the 30 minutes that starter Erick Dampier, Joel Anthony (whose peripheral vision was restricted by a mask he vowed never to wear again) and Jamaal Magloire (for just three minutes) split at center, the Heat was outscored by 22. In the 18 minutes that the 6-foot-11 Bosh played center, with either LeBron James or James Jones working as an undersized power forward, the Heat outscored the 76ers by 34 … ‘If I have to set screens and roll hard to the basket and hopefully get our shooters open, then I’ll do that,’ Bosh said. ‘That is no problem with me. Mentally, I’m stronger. Physically, I’m stronger. I’m more prepared for it this time around.’”

what is this 6-11 nonsense. he was listed at 6’10 or even 6’9 and a half his entire career in toronto and earlier this season with mia, now he is 6’11 just because he will be utilized sometimes as a center?

“the Heat was outscored by 22″ why does the Florida media refer to a sports team in that tense, even the two d-bags that call the games for Sun Sports do that, is really annoying & hits the ear wrong.

  • robb

mentally stronger? wrong, physically stronger? wrong

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Bosh is so Metro! Nothing wrong with that at all!

He just wants to stop getting dunked on.

  • RunNGun

Bosh a center? LMAO He wouldn’t have had to worry about that if he would have hooked up with A`mare in New York with the Knicks. As Kevin Durant said, “Bosh is a fake tough guy.”

  • Jono

u get paid 8 digits a year to play basketball. in miami. with lebron/dwade. where you’ve become famous. even though u suck.

shut up and earn your money like kobe does, and i hate kobe.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Amare hates playing the five too.
    They’re both fake tough guys.

  • Brothaman

You don’t be need to be a tough guy if you can get 18 and 8 as a third option on your team.

  • http://jojo.com Max

    Play center like a Bosh.

  • JTaylor21

So now Bosh doesn’t “earn” his money like Kobe does and Amare is all of a sudden a decent center. Where they do that at?

  • T-Money

dsleepy: he was always this tall. he measured at 6’11.5 at the draft combine back in the days. he just didn’t want to be a 7-footer because he saw himself as a perimeter-oriented 4. this is the compromise that spo is making to his stars: start (and therefore be labelled) at your favourite position, but when the game is on the line wade will play a lot of 1, bron a lot of 4 and bosh a lot of 5. kinda like gasol and duncan who have been the closing centers for their team for years now. they still want to be labelled PFs.

Boing: The Heat is the institution, the team, not the collection of players – that’s the intention at least. So The Heat is singular. I don’t like the way it sounds either, but it’s correct.

Anon is right, grammatically it’s correct, it just sounds very awkward. The Magic, their beat writers, and the Sentinel refer to their team in the same manner.

he did backup Howard at the 5 for the Redeem Team. I think this is a smart move and one they need to do because what he has been doing is not effective

I’m pretty sure James Cameron could have saved millions in CGI technology if he used Chris Bosh and his family as Avatars.

  • Craven Morehead

Chris Bosh should play the aggressive power bottom position..he is in miami afterall

  • Bluntz&40z

MVP WNBA. I hope shaq comes back and just levels bosh on a pick, breaks bosh’s shoulder, so we don’t have to hear bosh talk again. Seriously, why do we have to hear from him his opinion doesn’t matter. The only reason he can play the 5 is because thr center position is the weAkest it’s ever been. Wilt chamberlain, Russell, Abdul-jabbar, Olajuwon… Would all make bosh look like he’s in high school still if they ever met, even after they retired. The clippers tried to get chamberlain to play for them in the ’80′s… Years after he retired… The position doesn’t hAve depth anymore. I doubt bosh even knows what a drop step is, it’s sad that now the center position is basically only for setting picks.

Wow, how many dumb things can Bluntz say in one statement? First, you have to hear from him because reporters ask him questions. Actually scratch that. You DON’T have to listen to him because you can either turn the channel or not read the article. Second all those centers you named made everyone look foolish when they played. You’re talking about 4 of the all time greatest centers ever and you think it looks bad on Bosh, a power forward, that these guys would score on him at will? Really?
