Dwight Howard Doesn’t Like His MVP Chances

There’s been a surge in pro-Howard MVP chatter online of late, but Dwight doesn’t sound like he’s very confident in his chances at winning the award. The Orlando Sentinel reports: “Wednesday, Howard was named the NBA’s Eastern Conference player of the month for February. He averaged 26.6 points and 14.8 rebounds per game while posting a league-leading field goal percentage of .667. Overall, he ranks ninth in scoring, second in rebounding, third in blocked shots. He’s never been better. ‘He belongs in the very, very serious discussions for the MVP,’ Stan Van Gundy said. So why hasn’t he been? Well, the MVP is about scoring and being the best player on the best team. The knock on Dwight was his offense was way behind his defense, but that has changed. He averaged 18.3 points per game last season — 17.5 for his career — and is currently at 23.3. Just imagine if he could make free throws. And centers depend on somebody getting the ball to them; LeBron and Rose always have it in their hands. ‘Most of the MVPs are picked before the season starts. That’s how it’s always been,’ Howard said. ‘Everybody knows that to be considered the MVP you have to be the guy who scores a lot of points. So nobody pays attention to rebounds or blocked shots or defense. It’s all about points.’”

so score more points. lol jokes aside, he’d be my pick for mvp this year.

  • jay rose

I kinda agree when they say normally the player that wins MVP is the person who has the ball most of the time but they also deliver when it comes down to the wire. DROSE 4 MVP!!

    Forget scoring more points.
    Win more games.
I can’t co-sign Dwight for MVP when San Antonio, Boston, Miami, Dallas and Chicago have more W’s than Orlando.

    Oh, and the Lakers too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

If the Magic would have the record of last year, than yes Dwight should be the MVP.

  • nick

if its all about scoring points how did steve nash win it 2 years in a row? and if its about scoring how come durant isnt the MVP the last 2 years. Dwight worry about winning games not recognition from your peers and some trophy

“No one pays attention to rebounds or block shots and playing defense”. If that’s so then explain to me why Hakeem, BWalton TD, KG, DRob, MMalone, and BRussell have 11 MVPs combined.

  • JTaylor21

Damn, they actually have 13 MVPs. So stop complaining DHow, no one cares.

i dont like his chances at the mvp either.. and he needs to stop b*tchin.. look how many wins the magic have this year, that explains it all.. the more the magic focus their game plan on howard, the worse they become

Dwights right, in todays game it’s more about scoring than anything else – scoring is what really puts you in the conversation. Take the top 5 scorers and then that’s the group to make a decision from. Whoever has the most flash will be a favorite of the fans. Whoever is the best player on the best team will be the choice of the media. Whoever is perceived to increase interest in the NBA the most, will be the selected player.

    ^the nupe..
if thats the case, then blake griffin is takin the maurice podoloff trophy home at the end of the season

  • max

Man,he should really be the MVP (or Rose).Look at his team. The highest scorer othre than him:J-RIch with 12 or sth…he basically IS the defense of the Magic. He does it all, with a really limited team.

Howard wants to win MVP? Easy… go to the KNICKS! Make it happen, Walsh!

  • showtime

    It simply D12 = M.V.P.

  • rondo4mvp

Freakin dwight howard has no god damn chance at mvp drose and durant r the only two that do I would love to see my man rondo get some love at the end of the year but he would rather rack up wins then stupid worthless trophies so dwight take a page out of rondos book and stop b*tchin worry about the postseason instead of mvp

  • Hugh Jass

If he gave a more serious persona I think he would have a better chance. I think he is the Most VALUABLE Player because if you take him out of the Magic, they are worse that the Cavs but people just don’t take him seriously enough.

  • showtime

How in the world do no shot rondo & unclutch durant are in your mvp choice..and their no even the best player onn their team?…clowns on slam I swear

  • ai come back

uh…….u take dwight off the magic u get jameer nelson hedo , jrich, arenas, brandon bass and jj redick u find a decent center ud have a decent squad tahts MUCH better than the cavs

  • coggie13

@max that is not a limited team at all.

  • ripslam

No. He’s played largely the same as last year, and his team is in worse position.

when you’ve got the weapon down low, use it! I swear Dwight could average 35 ppg if they fed him the ball consistently. I understand that’s not how SVGs system works (swing the ball Dwight!), but other C’s in the league have nothing on Dwight. Look forward to “just” another DPOY…

  • http://360special.blogspot.com dev0

and the free throws thing doesn’t help either…

  • Michael

Agree with Dwight. It will be Rose or Lebron.

  • spursnation

MVP is meaningless. It took Garnett four years to win a title after his MVP season, Nash and Dirk have yet to win a title and prolly never will, it took Kobe a year after his MVP to win his 4th title, and Bron has yet to win a title. ere’s a rock-hard stat for you: last MVP to win a title in the same year-> Timmy “Big Fundamental” Duncan in 03. Especially with Perkins in the West and with Miami’s thin frontline, it’ll basically be a slugfest between Chicago and Orlando. Only one of em has a 20+,10+ guy. Real Talk

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Only one of them has a 20 and 10 guy but the other has a 19 and 10 guy, a 25 and 8 guy and a 13 and 12 guy.
    I like the Bulls’ chances.
    Real talk.

  • flipnoyce

Maybe you should stop trying to be like SHAQ and just worry about winning games and quit your whining, you’re a damn 7footer for goodness sake! Atleast ShaQ got his in 99-00 season, what do you think about that Dwight.

  • Yesse

Centers have it harder. If Dwight would win the MVP right now then Shaq should have got it like 5 times in his career.
