Grant Hill Responds Strongly to the Fab Five

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Last Sunday, ESPN aired a tremendous documentary about Michigan‘s famed Fab Five team. One of the most compelling — and hilarious — parts of the doc was when Jalen Rose and his teammates told the world what their teenage selves used to think of Grant Hill and the Duke Blue Devils.

Rose admitted that he was jealous of Hill‘s upbringing and solid family life (a complete 180 degrees from Jalen’s own childhood), and Jimmy King summarized what his team thought of those Duke teams: “I thought Christian Laettner was soft; a bitch. And I thought Grant Hill was a bitch.”

Grant Hill caught the documentary, and promised to fire back.

And today, he did just that, in the NY Times (with further thoughts to be posted on his own website later):

It was a sad and somewhat pathetic turn of events, therefore, to see friends narrating this interesting documentary about their moment in time and calling me a bitch and worse, calling all black players at Duke “Uncle Toms” and, to some degree, disparaging my parents for their education, work ethic and commitment to each other and to me. I should have guessed there was something regrettable in the documentary when I received a Twitter apology from Jalen before its premiere. I am aware Jalen has gone to some length to explain his remarks about my family in numerous interviews, so I believe he has some admiration for them.

In his garbled but sweeping comment that Duke recruits only “black players that were ‘Uncle Toms,’ ” Jalen seems to change the usual meaning of those very vitriolic words into his own meaning, i.e., blacks from two-parent, middle-class families. He leaves us all guessing exactly what he believes today.

I caution my fabulous five friends to avoid stereotyping me and others they do not know in much the same way so many people stereotyped them back then for their appearance and swagger. I wish for you the restoration of the bond that made you friends, brothers and icons. I am proud of my family. I am proud of my Duke championships and all my Duke teammates. And, I am proud I never lost a game against the Fab Five.

Game.Set.Match. That ending was killer.

I think Hill might’ve missed the point that Rose and his teammates were trying to convey: mainly, that this is what they thought of Duke and its players back then, as very young men. Nevertheless, it’s a very strong response from Grant Hill.

I don’t he made it clear he was wrong but he didn’t say it directly. I think he was wrong to call him an Uncle Tom. Not so wrong to say Duke only wanted certain players.

This is besides the point, but was Jimmy Walker really “a millionaire”??
I mean, were NBA cats really making that kind of money in the late 60′s to mid 70′s?

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Jalen Rose and Grant Hill have the “Willie Lynch” Syndrome. They really need to get over it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jimmy

What would the world be like if Allen Iverson had gone to Duke….

  • spursnation

Net NBA titles of the Fab Five and Grant Hill-> 0. No one cares about the playground pickup game known as the NCAA. This is just a bunch of hasbeens afflicted with severe nostalgia of a time when they had some relevancy.

  • spursnation

Oh and only go to Duke if you want to learn the non-NBA, boring way of playing basketball. I treat the NCAA as an internship (albeit with no pay) or a residency: it’s supposed to prepare you for the professional world (the NBA). Coach K could never coach in the NBA.

Ignorant thoughts by Jalen in his youth. None-the-less GHill should realize that he doesn’t feel this way today…

    @Jimmy G
You’ve posted the same thing about 30 times, no-one cares about your opinion, stfu.
And Grant’s a class act. He didn’t go too far at all, Rose totally deserved that, even if it was for an opinion from years ago. It’s not like he insulted him personally, just pointed out that he never won anything. Hardly a critical insult. And Jalen didn’t carry his team to the Finals, whereas Grant was unreal good, until injuries.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

There is NO WAY Wilt Chamberlain could score a hundred points against Duke in today’s game. The players back then were soft, white, Uncle Toms.

  • RXAX

Most all black folks hated duke, just like we hated the celtics – do the math…Btw the Fab Five book by mitch albom, tells quite a story about them cats. They were unapologetic at those times and wanted any and everybody to know it. Indiana Univ, MSU, Alan Henderson to name a few, got the duke/laettner/hill treatment. Look it up.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Jalen went to HS in Plano, TX?! Jimmy Walker was a millionaire?

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

I wonder if Duke would take Jason “White Chocolate” Williams or Chris Anderson.
    Just saying.

  • Byebye

Detroit Dave is right I wanna interview from the players of thar era and see how they felt we know shaq hated lattner cuz when they in college his soph an jun yr he was all in his face I want to know how the great players who went to college cause it wasn’t vouge to go straight from high school to the pros how they felt about the duke program
Antoine Jamison Vince Carter Rasheed Wallace mj Shawn kemp big dog Robinson shaq Alonzo glen rice everybody I want a townhall meeting to really get this in the open I know everyone respects what coach k has done but how he overlooks certain players is shat needs to be addressed

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    I cringe-laughed at Ugh’s joke…

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Jalen admitted to the world that his youthful hatred of Grant Hill stemmed from jealousy. And Grant “Class Act” Hill, instead of appreciating the family nucleus (that far too many Black children lack) and the privileged upbringing (that most people don’t get) he had, takes a shot at Jalen Rose? smh

  • arthur

I want to know what Scoop thinks!

  • Byebye

Also coach k made kyrie it irving sit those games cause he was getting hype as possibly the no1 pick in the draft now that he might come back for the tournament I wanna see how coach k plays him
Also coach k only seems to recruit players who are good but will stay all four yrs
Look how he hurt most of his good players who couldve come out not get drafted where they were slotted the year before an they are out of the NBA real quick j Williams for example

  • http://jamison526@aol.com Jimmy G

    @Ben Ireland

People DO care about my opinions, so you STFU. This column has the stupid waiting in moderation, so I post just in case if it doesn’t show up.
In addition, Grant is not a class act, that mention of him winning college titles was a low blow, and you can just go suck one. Grant Hill didn’t have to take a shot at Jalen Rose in the letter, he can just let his game speak for itself. But he clearly crossed the line with his editorial.

Like it or not, Jalen has been to an NBA Finals, regardless of what his role was, and he did so on the Indiana Pacers. You and your love of Duke University can just go STFU. Michigan fan for life! Peace!

This is an interesting story, and while the statement was in the context of a 17 year old young man who grew up in the situation that he was in… I’ve watched the clip of Jalen talking with Skip and I’m not entirely sure he doesn’t still feel the same way today. Just my perspective, though.

  • Michigan Mike

After reading the letter, the only offense I would take is his mention of never having lost to the Fab Five. it is a slight, but unfortunately it is also true. I’m okay with old guys having beef with each other, even though it muddles the documentary with controversy. If Rose and Hill want to start a fight in the parking lot, take it outside somewhere, and put them in a boxing ring.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

LA Huey: He really didn’t say that dude. He said part of it was jealousy, but whenever he was asked if he still felt that way, he dodged around the question. Did you see his ESPN-post Grant Hill interview? It was iffy at best.

  • Chet

Grant Hill is a still classy guy. This letter might’ve gone too far, but he spoke his mind in a different sort of light. He felt he had to protect Duke and himself, so naturally if a bitter rivalry must envelop, so be it.

Jalen Rose is an honest person with brash opinions, which is good for the media. I like it that they aren’t friends with each other. It makes the NBA feel real and not all chummy.

And I agree with you Michigan Mike and Dacre, that the doc could’ve been better. The ascent to the finals or the David vs. Goliath approach would’ve been far better, than the producers and director egging on the players for their preconceived opinions. But for better or worse, the film was made, and some less than classy remarks were made from the Fab Five about their emotions as teenagers. Competition and honesty are good virtues, but Grant Hill was valid in defending himself and his team.

Also, Duke and Michigan will never like each other. They are opposites on each end of the spectrum, so Michigan will have to embrace this as part of their history, while Duke is viewed in a more favorable light by the media. What should be emphasized is Laettner’s classier response to the Fab Five. But neither Grant Hill, Rose, nor King should be at the center of the backlash from the film.

On a different note, the NCAA Tournament officially starts tomorrow! So, that will be fun to see how far Duke and Michigan will go, especially with Kyrie Irving healthy. And as a Duke fan, Grant I have your back. You’re still a hall of famer in my books. Last time I checked, he’s still ranked in the top 60 on the Elo Rater of Basketball-Reference. He’s still a vital member of the Phoenix Suns. All he needs is an NBA title and he’ll officially one-up Jalen Rose. But Rose is still good for the media.

    Hey guys,

I just found this article from esteemed writer Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, which brilliant sums this piece nicely.

    http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/bryan-burwell/article_fe8b7a55-2a14-5eb6-a2d6-a139cffebd3b.html

Kim English puts a nice touch on this subject. English and Burwell do a great job on the summation of Rose’s backstory prior to facing Duke.

  • Pugz

Im a Suns fan and live in Phoenix but Grant was in the wrong for doing this. He should have just kept his mouth shut for real… they were just being honest trying to talk about their feelings AT THE TIME. I don’t think Grant can understand the past, but oh well, I thought he was classier than that.

Grant hill for the win? What? reacting to a teenage boys thoughts? Immature ones at that?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Mars

Grant is right. But is he? Jalen was young, but the truth hurts. Black males can never win. They even hate on each other. Who is the “Uncle-Tom”?

  • Ali

Jalen said it, Grant commented back and people have their own opinions on the subject “Uncle Tom”. Depending on your up bringing, we all have our own opinion on the subject. Ask two black kids who grew up in two completely different households and I can guarantee they will have different opinions of the subject “Uncle Tom” lets move on fellaz….

  • Ben Ireland

    @JimmyG
It was hardly a low blow, he didn’t insult his family or anything. And Duke have a great program… I’m not a fan, I’m a Carolina guy, but I wouldn’t say no to playing at Duke, would you?
Simply put, would you rather be Grant Hill, still playing, being a massive star for a long time, or Jalen Rose… a Finals appearance and..?

Grant Hill is gangsta and drinks sprite! If he wouldn’t have suffered all those injuries, he would have been great.

  • ClydeSays

I have no problem with King & Rose calling out Duke on their recruiting methods, then or now. They’re on ESPN today and they credit the Uncle Tom statement to their 17 yr old selves, but their criticism of Duke remains.

But are the Duke players at fault? How many recruits are going to take a stance and say “No thanks, I’d rather go to a D2 school instead of supporting your program.”?

  • K.a.

Im preeeeeety sure grant hill understands the comment being retrospective. But i could see him speaking out if only to represent duke pride. Its totally justifiable, what does it say about duke guys if they take that stuff like that lying down? Nobody expects somebody to spew stuff like that even if its widely acknowledge n not produce a rebuttal. Im sure jalens all, touche grant, touche tho not in those exact words.

  • Clement

    Laettner is still a b**ch

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Burwell’s piece was cool.
I surprised that so many people feel Jalen thought Grant was an Uncle Tom because he had two parents. I assumed he thought he was an Uncle Tom because he was acceptable to Duke.
    There is a serious difference.

  • el_larsen

grant hill just lost my respect here.
he has reponded in a uncle tom way(whatever it means)
he went to duke and can’t understand how an 18 old years jalen rose could feel about duke?

  • el_larsen

maybe grant is upset cos duke beat the fab five BUT they are the one WHO defined the era

  • baller4life

First off, I have great respect for Jalen Rose for his sincerity and transparency throughout the Fab Five documentary. My first reaction to the documentary was that this is taking me back and this is some real ish. I’ve been a fan of Webber, Rose, King, Howard, and Jackson since I was a boy in baggy shorts & high-tops on the streets of NYC. I looked up to these guys growing up because they represented a mindset of the streets and knew what it was like to hustle and grind to survive without a father figure. Like Jalen Rose, what I used to think as a teenager has changed after growing up and learning to work for a living. The irony for all of us is that times have changed even though people’s opinions have not and Jalen Rose as a successful pro-athlete making good $$$$$ as a well-known Sports Analyst would think of his current self as ‘Uncle Tom.’ Accusations like this make hard working black Americans grind their teeth and clench our fists all around because any such accusation questions our identity and experience of life’s pains and agony. Wake up people! Everybody’s got hurts and regrets in life. Life is full of suffering… some choose to complain and some grind it out to survive. The term ‘Uncle Tom’ is an insult to the parents that have raised us, single moms, people who lost their fathers or mothers to war, etc. As Jalen Rose said, the Fab Five’s opinions are a case of the ‘Have’s vs. the ‘Have not’s. Jalen Rose and his family are now among the ‘Have’s because they have overcome as I hope my own family will continue to do.

    @Toronto
“Grant Hill is probably writing this to all those people who hate Duke, not just the Fab Five, for their sweeping generalization that Black-American Duke players are Uncle Toms. Jalen and Jimmy’s comments just created the flashpoint, and he’s used this opportunity to clarify his position. Coach K is big on character, and recruits players that fit that bill. The most recent is Kyrie Irving, who everyone says is a classy, driven young man with a solid character. Say what you will about the university, but Grant Hill took exception to the view that he, and other African-American players (many of whom are now coaches, businessmen, analysts, or current players) are Uncle Toms, when, upon further investigation, is moronically mistaken for strong character and success. So yes…Grant Hill, like many here have said, didn’t really ‘get’ Jalen’s point. He was busy making his own damn good one.”
Cosign… I endorse this statement. Just as

Let’s play this thing out… Elton Brand, Dahntay Jones, Sean Dockery, Corey Maggete, John Dawkins are just some of Duke’s African-American athletes. I’m not sure this is so much about race or ‘black’ness as it is about economic circumstances. To relate to Jalen’s feelings of being raised in a single parent home… Duke’s Nolan Smith grew up many years cuz his NBA star father died when he was 8. Duke incoming freshman Quinn Cook went through high school without his Father (props to his mother.) Duke has historically recruited players like Kobe Bryant, Chris Webber, John Wall, Harrison Barnes, Derrick Rose, Rodney Purvis, etc. even if they ended up not going to Duke.

Stereotypes go both ways people so get over it cuz you can’t put any person in a box without taking away from their life story, failures, and accomplishments. Some of us like (@MichiganMike, @JimmyG, @X, @BryanCrawford, @byebye etc.) need to grow up and stop instigating.
    Haters will always be haters…

    Shout out to @swalk, @BossTerry, @Tmoney, @JamOnIt, etc.
    for RealTalk.
Don’t judge me until you’ve walked 2 moons in my shoes (moccasins)

  • PR_UM_Fan

What Many people do not understand is Jalen was never talking about Families, he was talking about Society. Duke Recruits Players ONLY from Private Schools, Which requires Money. i think people are missing the point regarding this statement.

I wonder if Grant hill’s dad was not an all-pro NFL player would he have been recruited to DUKE instead of somewhere like ie. Cincinatti? The Argument/ opinion was regarding the differences between selection of innercity and affluent black families. He has a good Point to name anyone from duke who grew up in the inner-city enviornment.

  • truthteller

I think the reason why people hate Duke is a little deeper than what people including Grant Hill fail to realise. It has nothing to do with coming from a 2 parent family or going to a private school. MJ one of the most beloved atheletes in the world grew up in 2 parent middle class family. he also spoke properly and didn’t have any tatoos. How come he wasn’t hated?

  • truthteller

The reason why Duke was and is still hated is the same reason why the Celtics were hated in the 1980s by most black folks.

  • el_larsen

well i loved those celtics but still hate duke!
no racial thing for me ,more about the money

  • baller4life

    You walked right into it…
Haters will be haters no matter the race, socioeconomic class, education, posse.

Jalen Rose, Grant Hill, Chris Webber, Michael Jordan, Juwuan Howard, each make more money than we may make working a 9-5 job.
As President Obama has been hoping for and the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed… change is happening. Look at todays Celtics! The stars of the Boston Celtic are almost all brothuhs… no matter what background they came from.
Despite the Anglo-saxon stereotypes we may have had of the Celtics during the Bird vs. Johnson era, Celtics have a great Coach in Doc Rivers and have revived the professional careers of black athletes into Champions who are HOF bound.
Duke’s program has changed over the years as well. Look at Duke’s incoming class:
Austin Rivers, Quinn Cook, and Michael Gbinije for being black and going to a great D1 program?
Just as I don’t criticize the Fab Five for comments and decisions they made as teenage youths, I don’t fault Duke recruits for comments and decisions they’re making today.

People need to take responsibility for their hate and bitterness…. justsayin.

Black/Brown/Bronze people need to stop hating each other and trying to discredit each other’s “street” credibility. RealTalk son.

  • sport j

im from detroit and i understand j rose, we could not beat duke ,and they didnt advertise or promote there own black players.Grant went out and made a name for himself with highflying slams.Wen we drafted Hill i remember the hole city was confused because we disliked Grant Hill.Grant also felt like he never fit in with the Detroit city. Hence Orlando, but i can say Grant did play hard for the city and if he would of sign with us we would still b tryn to win a championship.

  • Lantern2814.5

Ever occur to Jalen that it could also be coincidental that Duke got athletes from middle class families? It seems to me Duke recruits student-athletes, the one who could keep up with their academic program as well… maybe at the time the athletes Duke ends up with are the ones who came from middle-class, 2-parent families, but not really because of that… just being an 18-year old kid calling other opponents bithces shows how intelectual you are… if thats any indication, then I’m guessing Jalen was just recruited by Michigan for ballin’ and not for his stand out academics…

  • http://theresastatforthat.blogspot.com Deron

Grant Hill overreacted, Jalen said how he felt at age 17. Nonetheless, Grant Hill owns Jalen Rose head to head.
