JaVale McGee on His Shameless Triple Double Chase

Everyone had a good laugh at JaVale McGee and his triple-double antics this week, but JaVale and his coach find nothing absurd with what took place. From the WaPo: “I got a triple-double,’ McGee said. ‘Who can say they got a triple-double? I’m not really worried about it.’ McGee said, if anything, he was upset that some tried to discredit his accomplishment by comparing it to other failed triple-double quests — such as the one eight years ago by Ricky Davis, who was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers when he attempted to rebound his own miss on his basket in order to get a triple-double in a win against Utah. Davis finished with 26 points, 12 assists, and 9 rebounds. ‘I couldn’t understand how they was saying it was like Ricky Davis,’ McGee said. ‘The thing about it is, I wasn’t trying to get a triple-double until they started running plays for me at the end. So, that’s totally different.’ Coach Flip Saunders called the plays down the stretch for McGee to get the final point needed for the triple-double and said he spoke with his third-year center about the disapproving response to his accomplishment. ‘Two things, as I told him, I said the most impressive thing, rather than the triple-double, was the 12 blocks — because those were legit,’ Saunders said. ‘Sometimes in games, assists, there’s a question. You give a guy the ball, a guy takes three dribbles and some places give him an assist. A blocked shot, there’s no ifs, ands or buts. You either block it or you don’t.’”

Flip is a herb. Javale just doesn’t know better. This team is killing John Wall’s soul – they don’t go hard and they’re selfish.

  • Caribbean Crossover

I definitely agree with the assist vs blocks argument tho…..

  • feez22

I agree with the assists vs. blocks thing but… wall now has to play with a frontcourt that is clearly only about stats. Did ANDRAY BLATCHE not whore out for a triple double last yr? i mean… i feel sorry for wall. Ya i know that he is making millions but from a basketball standpoint it has to be frustrating playing with 2 big men that can’t rebound, defend on a consistent playoffs and triple double whore. They are clearly not about the “Team”.

  • Anthony

i woulda did that too… triple doubles dont come often for big men… but it was funny……..

  • robb

‘I got a triple double’ yeah so what? your team is 16-50

Before Javale, 19 different players got a triple double. Only 1 big, Gasol. 1st to do it with blocks. noting to be ashamed of

Yeah, I feel bad for making fun of him before if it was the coaches’ decision… Still think Javale “Epic Fail” McGee is a good nickname until they win something… dunking on two different goals at the same time in the dunk contest was cool though

  • dimo

he’s actually worsened his stats by jacking up too many dumb shots at the end.
people just focus too much on stats these days imo.

  • unrel

i wouldn’t say he’s all about stats.. that’s a lame arguement.. what i found so funny was.. the team would work that hard throughout the whole game.. they might have a different record..

  • Nella

Dumbass lives in fantasy basketball world where stats matter more than winning. Triple doubles are only good when they contribute to winning or competing for the win. Otherwise, all they show is ball hogging and fixation on numbers.

Why couldn’t he just be happy with his monster 12 blocks?
Better yet, why couldn’t he just have said “it don’t mean sh*t without a W”?

  • Bimmer

@ Nella, you think Mcgee blocking 12 shots and grabbing 10+ boards was him just being a ball hog and fixating on numbers? Last time I checked 12 blocked shots is just 24 points the other team didnt have a chance to score. Also, grabbing defensive rebounds is just stopping the other team from getting second chance points. And offensive rebounds is just giving his team the chance to score again. Your argument is flawed. He had what 12 points. Sure they lost the game but he sure as heck defended pretty well that game. So I wouldn’t say he wasn’t trying to help his team win. He tried to contribute to a victory. It doesnt matter win or lose, triple doubles are an amazing accomplishment. If anyone on that team is a ball hog it is Nick Young.

  • mugiwara

good hustle, its sad that it discredits the 12 blocks, a truly amazing feat.

  • robb

hey the 12 blocks were amazing, nobody can question that, but he was too concentrated on the triple double, I mean, the guy averages 9.2 ppg and he just had 5 points at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Let it go, you’re playing great defense well, focus on that, and let other guys play the offense that’s how you help your team and that’s how your 12 blocks are gonna mean something.

  • bubblecat

I’m not so that blocks are arguable. A lot of times a player gets a block by fouling.

  • FightsBearz

I dont understand why this is such a travesty. The kid had a great game, and the Wizards were going on their way to a double digit loss anyway, why not run a few inside plays to him and get him the one point needed for the triple double. McGee wasn’t calling for the ball, and i’m sure he didn’t tell the guys on the court to get him the ball every play. Any good teammate would have done the same in the last 2 minutes of a game they were sure to lose.

The W was out of reach. Its not like he was pushing for a triple double the whole game instead of trying to win. I actually watched the game and it wasn’t until about the last 4 minutes of the game when Flip decided to run plays for him. He really only forced one move and he lost the ball. The basket that put him over the top was a dunk off a loose ball. Might as well have something good come out of the loss.

    k love is a beast

  • Red Star

How can this be compared to what Ricky Davis did? Did he shoot at his team’s own basket in an attempt to get the rebound so he could get a TD? This is not even close to what Wrong Rim Ricky did!
    Lakers 4 Life!!

  • JTaylor21

I hope that McGee can get out of that dump in DC and go to an actual team with an actual coach that can teach dude the game. He can be a defensive monster in the right system.

why’s everyone so uptight about this? can’t we just smile and move on? it was fun all round, unlike most of this season for the Wiz. hope they can make some moves in the summer tho, get a better team around Wall.

  • First & Foremost

Ask yourself, who isn’t trying to go for a triple double every game? If you are in a position to make the play are you not going to? Chris Paul tried really hard to keep his steals streak alive, no complaints there. Lebron running over Ben Wallace for his 10th rebound on his 55-XX-10 night in MSG, no complaints but an over ruling on 1 of his rebounds. Does anyone discredit Wilt’s 100 points when HIS team was fouling to stop the clock? This may never happen for Mcgee again, he had the chance and he took it.

If you would play in the NBA, and you have 9 pts, wouldn’ty you go for 1 more point to get a trip-dub?

  • JL

it was a legit try, but the problem was it was totally comical how inept he was at offense.

  • youngmuggsy

Home scorers will often award debatable blocks to their teams best shot blocker. That’s why you often see such big discrepancies between players home and road bpg averages. Not saying it happened in this instance, but blocks are not always as clear cut as Flip suggests.

  • greg

javale is still very young hopefully john wall will take leadership and make his bum ass work on his body and his game so he can play his position properly. i consider blatche a lost cause so just find an upgrade and let him ride out his reasonable contract as a role player. does any1 else realize wall doesnt have a backup pg outside of crawford who is also nick young`s backup… DC is starting to get just as messed up as the city

  • http://dude Chukaz

he got his last 2 points off an offensive rebound so ppl gotta stop making fun of him. sure he failed every time he got the ball but he got the last point he needed within the flow of the game

  • http://slamonline.com Acclaimed

Are you kidding me? Really? That has to be some of the most ignorant sh*t I have ever seen on here. Dre and Javale each go for a triple double over the span of like 6 months, and all of a sudden they’re the most egotistical players in the league, and you make it sound like they’re going for one each game.
Javale didn’t ballhog, coach called the plays for him. I agree that Blatche is a subpar defender and rebounder, but I wouldn’t say the same about McGee. I have a hard time seeing how you’re a bad defender when you get a trip-dub with blocks. He’s an above average post defender, and an exceptional shot blocker.
