NBA Referee Suing Reporter Over Twitter Remark

Be careful about what you tweet out there, kids. Streets is watching (and NBA refs, too). The St. Paul Business Journal reports: “Bill Spooner said he has ‘honestly’ refereed NBA games for 22 years, but was investigated by the league after AP writer Jon Krawczynski posted a message on social networking site Twitter.com during the Jan. 24 Timberwolves game against the Houston Rockets at the Target Center. According to his suit, the Oak Park, Cali. referee called a Minnesota player for a foul at 10:22 in the second period and got an earful from Rambis. After promising to review the call at the half, Spooner said Rambis asked him how he would get the points back. Spooner said he didn’t respond to the comment, but Krawczynski soon after tweeted: ‘Ref Bill Spooner told Rambis he’d ‘get it back’ after a bad call. Then he made an even worse call on Rockets. That’s NBA officiating folks.’ Spooner called that Tweet a defamatory accusation of game fixing, and said the reporter and his employer have refused to retract it. His suit seeks more than $75,000 in damages, the Tweet to be unpublished and a retraction of the statement.”

I’d assume the law is with the ref given that libel and slander are unprotected by the first amendment. He just needs to prove that the reporter’s comments weren’t grounded in any logical base and were a harshly unfair criticism.

Imagine if players could pull this. Comment sections etc. might even be civil.

The referee will lose. AP-Krawczynski (as I like to call him) is legitimate.

Jon is as honest as they come. If he said it, it happened.

as if we haven’t seen this sort of thing happen in games anyway. are there enough mics and camera angles at games to capture moments like these now? should be simple enough to prove or disprove.

Well, the tweet is a little ambigous on second read.
Is the ref saying that he will get the points back personally?
Is the ref saying that those sort of things even out in the end?
The Tweet makes it seem like the ref made a makeup call immediately. I don’t think the tweet implied “game fixing” but maybe I’m missing something.

Bob Delaney will make krawczinski disappear

If this story is true (I believe it is) then it only confirms what most people suspect anyway…the refs are determining and influencing the outcome of NBA games.
