Post Up: Bee Unit

Hornets win in overtime, but DWest goes down.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Something tells me most of y’all weren’t too focused on NBA basketball last night. Understandable. Hell of a night of college hoops. Duke fell to Arizona; Kemba brought UConn past SDSU; Florida beat BYU in OT; and Butler’s crazy run continued. And the Mavs, TWolves, Hornets and Jazz all did the damn thing last night. Well, kind of. Here’s what went down on the professional side of town:

Dallas 104, Minnesota 96

Early in the second half it looked like one of the League’s worst teams (playing sans Kevin Love) might steal one from one of the League’s best, but then the Mavs turned it on, rallying behind Dirk Nowitzki (30 points, 11 boards) and Jason Terry (18 points). The two dropped 19 collective fourth quarter points, utilizing the pick-and-roll to confuse Minny’s D and have their way on offense. In the loss, Anthony Randolph upped Dirk by providing 31 points and 11 rebounds, which means the TWolves officially have another up-and-comer that could be awfully valuable in years to come. Whether or not Minnesota ever harnesses all this young talent into a winning season is anybody’s guess, but at least the talent is there to be harnessed.

New Orleans 121, Utah 117

This was a wild one in Utah, one that unfortunately looks like it’ll do more long-term damage than good for the Bees. First, the game: These two battled down to the end of regulation, when Emeka Okafor converted a ridiculous bank shot (see below) that forced OT, where the Bees took care of business and sent the Jazz packing. The negative is David West went down after a dunk late in the fourth, and the replay showed that his knee took a painful, painful twist that required West be removed from the court in a wheelchair. Let’s just say his knee bent in ways a human knee isn’t supposed to bend. DWest is a vital part of his squad and will be a huge factor if the Hornets are to have the slightest chance of upsetting a better team in this season’s Playoffs, so we’ll have to wait and see just how much time the New Orleans forward will be kept off the court. He’s scheduled to have an MRI later today.

Last Call: Emeka Okafor, for the tie:

What a boring NBA night. This almost never happens, there’s always atleast one matchup I’m looking forward to or am intrigued by. Thank god for Kemba Walker, Derrick Williams and the Madness. Both were awesome last night.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Adam, the game was in Utah.
Gordon Hayward played a good game, and blocked the shit out of Chris Paul on the break.
    JAHMAI
This game was anything but boring, a 121-117 game, with one teams C hitting a prayer to send it into OT. On paper it may not have looked great to you, but if you actually watched it you likely would have enjoyed it.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    Good lord.
Did CP3 actually touch-pass that ball to Emeka?
While tumbling to the ground (thanks, Mr. Milsap) and crashing onto his hip?
    Basketball is wacky like that.
Ty Corbin’s face says it all: “whack?”

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

My comments are not showing up, I’m sure they will eventually, so I apologise for constant identical/similar comments.

    ADAM
    The game was in Utah.

    JAHMAI
The game was anything but boring. A 121-117 game, sent to overtime on a buzzer beating heave from your Center?! I’m assuming you didn’t actually watch it.

Gordon Hayward had a good game, and blocked Chris Paul something nasty on the break. Paul had a great stat-line, but he did not have a great game. To me, anyway.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

That didn’t come out right. ADAM, the game was in Utah, not New Orleans. ALLENP, how do your comments always look so well structured?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    LOL at DUKE!

    Minnesota harness talent….lol

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

    Co-sign Orange!! LOL

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Allball, you misunderstood my comment. I didn’t watch any games because there weren’t any interesting matchups to me. NOH-UTAH, may be fun to you, but it isn’t to me. Neither is Min-Dal.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    JAHMAI
I understand your point, but the game turned out to be very entertaining. NOH-UTA wouldn’t be fun to me if I wasn’t a Paul fan.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

hell of a shot from okafor, tho he hasnt turned out to be near the player i thought a couple years ago, he has still turned into a nice defensive player.. miami could use him since they have absolutely no defense down low

  • http://bugmarley.com Leonel

Did Jack really say that Mek practices that shot a lot during practices?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    Hear that Eboy…

  • MUBWAR

a crappy post up for a crappy night of basketball. But tonight, damnn Phi vs Mia, Mil is at the garden and Mem vs Chi …so many I don’t know where to look.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’d like Okafor on the squad.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^eboy..
i think he’d be a great fit.. he rebounds, actually plays above average defense, hustles decently.. i think it would be an ideal fit

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

No doubt….I think Miller will be in play in the off-season….not sure what would be needed from the Heat’s end to complete that deal….but they should explore it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com KulchaKris

I recall people were debating at draft time who was the better pick between Okafor and Dwight Howard. Bill Simmons (who I can’t stand anymore) even opined that Okafor was the better pick. I guess when you make predictions, some are bound to be dead wrong.

  • http://slamonline.com SG

Why does every freaking thing have to become about the Miami Heat? Its like its the only way someone can have a decent conversation on here is to talk about Miami.

  • http://www.slamonline.com KulchaKris

Come on SG, you have to admit that the Miami Heat story this season is awfully compelling.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

No one spoke about the Heat all day yesterday when the conversation was about Howard/Chicago/Noah. Stop bit*hing. They’re the second most popular team in the NBA (saw it on NBA.com this morning on their trend list or some tracker they use)they’re going to be spoken about. That’s how sh*t goes. Get over it.

  • http://slamonline.com SG

No its not. Its actually getting old.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^eboy..
id like to see a center of his caliber with the heat.. then all they would need is decent defensive point man with preferably a decent peremiter shot and they would be set

  • http://www.slamonline.com KulchaKris

So, what ranks as a fresh, compelling story in your mind? Sadly, there’s only about 4 or 5 teams that move the collective media meter.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^SG..
dude shut the f*ck up, nobody cares what your tired of ok? so just shut it

  • http://slamonline.com SG

    @c_cantrell…I don’t respond to b*tches.

  • http://www.slamonline.com SG

@c_cantrell…I’m gonna stay respectful and ignore what you said.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Gentlemen, it’s Friday…let it go.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Sensitive thugs, y’all all need hugs. No disrespect.

  • T-Money

E: I don’t want Emeka. He’s a 4 and struggles mightily vs Bynum, Pau and Dwight. We have Bosh and Haslem. Mike Miller will definitely be in play this summer, Pat was shopping him at the deadline for a center.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

man TPU is slow today, and i don’t necessarily wanna do work, this bites. i think the Twolves could surprise a lot of people next year and maybe sneak into an 8th spot. i jus wonder, cuz i obviously haven’t been following them this year, how has beasley been playing lately? he was making some noise earlier this season but i’ve heard nothing lately.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Wouldn’t you only have Emeka to Rebound and Defend? He has averaged a double double every year of his career, and is a very solid defender. Even if he’s 6’9/6’10. His contract is ridiculous though so he would never under his current contract be eligible to play on the Heat.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

He’s averaged a double double of like 10 and 10. He’s stiff as hell, and he isn’t that great a rebounder considering the horrible rebounder he’s playing next too. Tyson Chandler was way better.
But, Emeka has a lot skills and intangibles so I would probably take him over Dwight Howard.
    LOL

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well Emeka wouldn’t be my first, second, or anywhere near the top of my pecking order, but if he could be had on the cheap I think Miami would benefit, he’s definitely better then what they got now. That DHoward stuff from yesterday is ridiculous

  • T-Money

I know that this is going to shock people because it doesn’t fit with the narrative that Miami can’t rebound but they’re first in the NBA in defensive rebounding and 6th in rebounding differential. The starting 2 and 3 are getting 7+ boards a game. The back-up wing is getting 5 boards a game in only 20 minutes. Haslem is an animal on the glass. When they’ll go Wade-Miller-James-Haslem-Bosh in the playoffs, rebounding will not be an issue. What they need is a mobile center with size who can actually convert down low.

  • T-Money

Riles has said himself he’s going for a center: Nene has expressed interest already but I don’t know if they can pay him. Although Pat got Wade, Bron, Bosh, Miller and UD to take less than what other teams were offering + Bibby to forfeit 6.2 mil so you never know. If not, they’ll go after Chandler, Dalembert, Haywood, Kwame, etc. They want a legit center that can move his feet.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

T-Money every center you just named is on long term contracts except Dalembert, and all of them make way way to much money. Haywood makes in the arena of 10 million a year (mark cuban’s a genius) same with Chandler, Kwame makes like 6 and he’s really really bad. Dalembert makes 9 mill this year, but its expiring. Same deal with Nene except I bet Denver locks him up as soon as a new CBA is figured out.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I caution against getting too happy about Dalembert. I watched dude for a long, long time in Philly. He will make you angry.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

TPU is dead today. QUick someone say something controversial….

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

    I like turtles!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Okafor is probably a great fit for miami

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I want to know what Golden State is going to do with Monta Ellis this summer. They got to move him if they are serious about becoming a perennial playoff team, Curry and him together can’t defend anyone, they aren’t good for closing out games.

  • Pharoah

This week in the NBA has been the calm before the storm. Last couple weeks should be some great basketball.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Best NBA nick-names? I’m going with White Mamba.

  • http://www.slamonline.com SG

Will Derrick Williams be a Top 15 player in the L in five years?

  • http://www.slamonline.com SG

Kyrie Irving’s game reminds me so much of Chris Paul.

  • http://www.slamonline.com SG

Anyone think Derrick Williams will be a top 15 player in the L in five years?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

except he doesn’t improve his team by being on the floor. lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

a top 15 player in 5 years? no chance in h*ll. a top 15 player maybe at some point in his career yeah, but no not that quickly, he took time at UofA and the NBA is a whole nother animal. this draft is just beyond weak, which is what makes him the likely #1.

  • http://www.slamonline.com SG

How do you truly know a draft is weak before it? GMs are always wrong about that. They considered the ’05 draft very weak and the ’09 as well. I don’t see a reason why Williams can’t be a top 15 player by time he is 26. He also didn’t take time to develop at UA because he was named Pac-10 freshman and player of the year last year. What do you see in his game to make you think otherwise? He looks like a mixture of Iggy and Granger. Irving BTW is the projected #1 pick.

  • T-Money

nbk: kwame makes the vet min. haywood could be had for mike miller and say joel anthony. dalember makes 9 now but won’t commend more than the mle this summer. nene and chandler are long shots, agreed. oh and there’s ghostface przybilla too. and eddy curry (lol).

  • T-Money

derrick williams has some paul pierce in him. he’s crafty and has a bag of tricks + he’s in an incredible leaper. forget the 4-spot, he’s a 3 thru and thru.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kwame makes the vet min? I totally forgot he signed that 1 year contract my fault T. How much does Kwame really help Miami though? Its not like you say, if Miami gets Kwame Brown then they are title favorites, or any better then they were yesterday…. – Derrick Williams can’t defend NBA 3′s come on with that. He’s a stretch 4, right in the same mold as Jeff Green except he’s a little less athletic in terms of foot speed and quickness. He’s a better rebounder too, he’d be a huge 3 in the 90′s but in todays NBA he is the new “prototypical 4″

  • the nerve

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    In case you were wondering:
Orlando’s Dwight Howard enters the weekend averaging 23.1 points and 14.2 rebounds … and shooting a gaudy 60.2 percent from the field. If he maintains the latter figure for 10 more games, Howard will become just the fourth player in league history to register a 20/10/60 season. Wilt Chamberlain did it with Philadelphia in 1966-67. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979-80. And Shaquille O’Neal did it with L.A. in 2004-05
