Hornets win in overtime, but DWest goes down.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Something tells me most of y’all weren’t too focused on NBA basketball last night. Understandable. Hell of a night of college hoops. Duke fell to Arizona; Kemba brought UConn past SDSU; Florida beat BYU in OT; and Butler’s crazy run continued. And the Mavs, TWolves, Hornets and Jazz all did the damn thing last night. Well, kind of. Here’s what went down on the professional side of town:

Dallas 104, Minnesota 96

Early in the second half it looked like one of the League’s worst teams (playing sans Kevin Love) might steal one from one of the League’s best, but then the Mavs turned it on, rallying behind Dirk Nowitzki (30 points, 11 boards) and Jason Terry (18 points). The two dropped 19 collective fourth quarter points, utilizing the pick-and-roll to confuse Minny’s D and have their way on offense. In the loss, Anthony Randolph upped Dirk by providing 31 points and 11 rebounds, which means the TWolves officially have another up-and-comer that could be awfully valuable in years to come. Whether or not Minnesota ever harnesses all this young talent into a winning season is anybody’s guess, but at least the talent is there to be harnessed.

New Orleans 121, Utah 117

This was a wild one in Utah, one that unfortunately looks like it’ll do more long-term damage than good for the Bees. First, the game: These two battled down to the end of regulation, when Emeka Okafor converted a ridiculous bank shot (see below) that forced OT, where the Bees took care of business and sent the Jazz packing. The negative is David West went down after a dunk late in the fourth, and the replay showed that his knee took a painful, painful twist that required West be removed from the court in a wheelchair. Let’s just say his knee bent in ways a human knee isn’t supposed to bend. DWest is a vital part of his squad and will be a huge factor if the Hornets are to have the slightest chance of upsetting a better team in this season’s Playoffs, so we’ll have to wait and see just how much time the New Orleans forward will be kept off the court. He’s scheduled to have an MRI later today.

Last Call: Emeka Okafor, for the tie:

a top 15 player in 5 years? no chance in h*ll. a top 15 player maybe at some point in his career yeah, but no not that quickly, he took time at UofA and the NBA is a whole nother animal. this draft is just beyond weak, which is what makes him the likely #1.

How do you truly know a draft is weak before it? GMs are always wrong about that. They considered the ’05 draft very weak and the ’09 as well. I don’t see a reason why Williams can’t be a top 15 player by time he is 26. He also didn’t take time to develop at UA because he was named Pac-10 freshman and player of the year last year. What do you see in his game to make you think otherwise? He looks like a mixture of Iggy and Granger. Irving BTW is the projected #1 pick.

nbk: kwame makes the vet min. haywood could be had for mike miller and say joel anthony. dalember makes 9 now but won’t commend more than the mle this summer. nene and chandler are long shots, agreed. oh and there’s ghostface przybilla too. and eddy curry (lol).

  • T-Money

derrick williams has some paul pierce in him. he’s crafty and has a bag of tricks + he’s in an incredible leaper. forget the 4-spot, he’s a 3 thru and thru.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kwame makes the vet min? I totally forgot he signed that 1 year contract my fault T. How much does Kwame really help Miami though? Its not like you say, if Miami gets Kwame Brown then they are title favorites, or any better then they were yesterday…. – Derrick Williams can’t defend NBA 3′s come on with that. He’s a stretch 4, right in the same mold as Jeff Green except he’s a little less athletic in terms of foot speed and quickness. He’s a better rebounder too, he’d be a huge 3 in the 90′s but in todays NBA he is the new “prototypical 4″

    In case you were wondering:
Orlando’s Dwight Howard enters the weekend averaging 23.1 points and 14.2 rebounds … and shooting a gaudy 60.2 percent from the field. If he maintains the latter figure for 10 more games, Howard will become just the fourth player in league history to register a 20/10/60 season. Wilt Chamberlain did it with Philadelphia in 1966-67. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979-80. And Shaquille O’Neal did it with L.A. in 2004-05
