Rick Carlisle, Jason Terry Disagree on the Mavs’ Softness

Following their frustrating loss in New Orleans last night, Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle called his team “soft”, an accusation that Jason Terry did not take kindly. From ESPN: “Frustrated after watching his team bungle a 10-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter and then spit up a seven-point lead with 1:13 to go courtesy of multiple errors, Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle pulled no punches, and perhaps even dropped one on his club below the belt. ‘Soft,’ Carlisle said … ‘Yeah,’ the coach reiterated, ‘soft.’ ‘Who said that?’ Jason Terry said, scoffing at the accusation after he had an off night — rare for him of late — with 10 points. ‘I’m not soft, not me. I don’t know where that comes from, but we ain’t soft. We have to see how he meant soft in that aspect, but I know he wasn’t talking to me personally or any of my teammates because I don’t think none of these guys are soft.’”

    Dear Jason Terry,
    Dirk Nowitzki.
Signed, person who believes you have soft players.

Always easy for guys here to say someone is soft(Bosh).
Caboose please write a letter to Jason Terry or Dirk Nowitzki or anybody else you think is soft and challenge them to a one on one.
But please sign it with your real name.
There are maybe players that ain’t that aggressive like others all the time but to call someone soft that worked as hard as these guys to get where they are at today and that play a whole season of at least 82 games is ridiculous.

Another dumb comment by Rick Carlisle.
Say it to your team if you think they are soft first, not the media.

Speedy, I’m not saying Dirk hasn’t worked hard to get where he is. I respect him like crazy for all that he’s done with his game. I simply feel that he gets beat around in the post too often and shies away from contact. Calling a player “soft” doesn’t mean I think I could beat them one on one. It means that being a little bit more physical in their play would benefit them.

the softness of the Mavs is entirely Rick Carlisle’s fault. When you tell a team to play zone defense you are NOOOOOOOO way in any authority to call your squad soft, probably the one really bad move Carlisle’s made all season. Hopefully this doesn’t cause too much of a stir, because playoff time is coming….Mamba time is coming

In my opinion you have to differentiate between physical and psychical softness.
So Caboose, you are right that sometimes it would benefit them guys if they would play more aggressiv. But these guys are human and have there mistakes or weaknesses and I miss the respect for what these guys have done if we talk about them.
But that’s the problem with anonymous posting.

Dirk is the best Euro ever… 10 all-stars, has as many MVP’s as Kobe, got cracked by Wade in the Final but gotta show some respect

IT was probably mental softness that Carlisle talking about not physical. We all know that to play in this league you can’t be a slouch or else see you later. Mav’s have a different look this year but we all know how they finish every year. This could be a good year for them though with all that big body they have!!!

Carlisle is just trying to get them to play with an edge going into the last part of the season. We’ve all seen the Mavs blow it in the playoffs when they’ve got a great regular season record going in, and he wants to make sure there’s no drop-off this time. It’s a risky move and might backfire, but it could also just make them get angry and play harder.

If it’s mental toughness, then that lies with Carlisle. Honestly, the vets on the Mavs are playoff hardened. Yes, they are weak on the inside but mentally, I’m all with speedy.

Tyson (and Ason) gost them that game. Tyson was on some hyped up level of aggression when matched up with West late in the game. 2 stupid fouls, one eye poke, 2 huge freethrows missed. Meanwhile Jack was using Kidd on offense any way he wanted. Dallas executed very well until a min. to play, then West rammed Dirk into the bench on a lose ball (no foul call!), Cardinal went in the scrum to enforce and West shoved him. Result, a T on DW AND POSESSION FOR NOH!?
They lost their cool, really. And Rick still has odd rotations.

It sort of amazes me how David West continues to bully the Mavericks and no one does anything. At least WIN the game after he pulls some bullsh!t… David West should have been ejected after his shot to Nowitzki and then his shove to Cardinall. If a big man blatantly shoved a guard in the back, that big man would at least be called for a flagrant 2.
