Stan Van Gundy: There is Crying in Basketball

Fans, media, and opposing NBA players have all had nearly 24 hours to laugh at the Miami Heat for crying following their demoralizing loss to Chicago yesterday. According to Stan Van Gundy, though, this sort of thing happens behind closed doors more often than you would imagine (and says Miami deserves all the criticism they’ve received so far.) From the Orlando Sentinel: “NBA players crying over a regular season game? Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said it’s not as uncommon as you may think. ‘We all have, but it’s not something I would comment on and tell you who or when or anything else,’ Van Gundy said Monday. ‘But yeah, I think we’ve all had that. Usually playoff-type situations … Probably the only time I’ve seen it are in the games that sort of end your year in the playoffs. But yeah, I’ve seen it.’ Hey, whether you want to admit it or not, we’ve all cried over a sad movie or a bad breakup or a job rejection or anything else painful of the sort. It’s just difficult for many to picture NBA players — some of the most competitive, strong, masculine human beings in the world — shedding tears in front of other men over a game. But don’t we want our athletes to care? If fans are putting their money and emotions into this game, isn’t it best if the players in the games do the same? ‘I don’t care whether a guy cries or not,’ Van Gundy said. ‘I don’t see what difference it makes. But I don’t have to fill three hours of a sports talk show. Those guys need something to talk about. Mike and Mike in the morning, I don’t know, how long are they on? Three or four hours? I guess there aren’t enough games to just talk about the games, so you gotta figure out who was crying in the locker room. I’m just glad that’s not my job – trying to figure out who was crying.’”

Does anyone else hear SVG’s annoying whiny hoarse voice when reading his comments?

He’s probably talking about big baby.

I agree with svg completely. Everybody has had moments like that before in sports… The HEAT are an easy target since everybody classified them as villains and soft…

I’m currently picturing an image of JVG in one of the ESPN RV commercials when he looked like he was about to cry after Mike Breen asked if he was the one driving.

Enigmatic – I even sat back and folded my arms while reading it.

I got shorter, fatter & grew a stache while reading that.

Cry over a loss, like a bosh. Chris probably didn’t cry as hard as when James and wade left him in the car for hours in front of whatever club it was.

  • wilz

bron cries on the court all the time…just watch in HD

why would spoelstra say his team cried to the media, that’s just an embarrassing and stupid coaching move

  • Mr. Wet

I almost didn’t check slam today, knowing I would have to read an article about this. Media garbage can really ruin sports sometimes.

on a separate note, SVG cracks me up.

It’s like as if Miami had lost their virginity or something!

i bet jeff foster cries, a lot!

  • MikeC.

I wonder if they’re crying because they haven’t won 7 championships yet.

This might not register with some of the younger cats on here, but if anyone remembers Chris Farley’s ‘Matt Foley Motivational Speaker’ character from SNL, I think SVG sounds an awful lot like Matt Foley. Can’t you just picture SVG saying “Dwight, you need to develop a post move or you’ll be living in a van down by the river!”

You cry in my locker room you git hit with a Cricket Ball, no wonder they’re soft Spolstra isn’t showing enough tough love

i think admitting that the guys are crying is one of the few public mistakes coach spo has made. i think this is a classy move on SVG’s part to make light of crying, and hopefully lessen some of the flack coach spo an the heat are getting for it. i know they are in-state rivals, by i think Stan is compassionate enough to see that it isnt nice to harp on people in there lowest moments. good job coach

I have no problem criticizing Miami’s inability to close games but I’d never criticize them for crying. This is an emotional game.

Sports talk shows need to focus more on the subject matter: sports. The pure game without all of the gossip. As a fan, I do not want to hear if LeBron was crying in the locker room after a regular season loss. I would rather hear about why they lost-give me some analysis and leave the silly comments alone! These guys are real people, too, and the invasion of their privacy is getting out of hand.

I wonder how many players cried because of Jordan during the regular season? And you know they used to cry in Seattle all the time.

  • bill breedley

Crying over a regular season game in weak. Heat are the biggest pusses in sports

  • BostonBaller

    Dickie V nailed it!!

  • lockon

crying is part of everyone’s life but this is stupid. right after the regular season game, wow. good thing if its the playoffs, a valued teammate getting traded, etc but not after losing a regular season game. wow, really weak. and stpid.

Crying is part of basketball…The heat can ask Glenn Davis about it :)

  • Eddie

Heat can ask my boy Kendrick P about it. Dude was ballin tears left and right after he got separated from his “brothers.”

  • HOFanalyst

SVG has got more class than everyone commenting dude is sticking up for the heat in a way. who cares if they cry it means they care at least. people are too stupid sometimes
