Will Stephen Curry Cost Keith Smart His Job?

Some of the Bay Area media are convinced that when Keith Smart loses his coaching gig, it’ll be because of the strained relationship between him and his young point guard. From CSN: “When Warriors owner Joe Lacob says publicly at the end of the season he’s not bringing back Keith Smart as coach — which seems very much a foregone conclusion at this point — he’ll certainly have some reasons. Right at the top of the list will be Smart’s relationship with second-year point guard Stephen Curry. There is no feud, no profanity-laced shouting matches or even any dislike, really. There’s not even really a ‘problem.’ But something’s amiss between the two. If you’ve been watching the Warriors all season long you’ve seen it. To say Smart has had Curry on a shorter leash than Don Nelson did a year ago would be an understatement. You’d have to be watching a different game to not notice all those times Smart showed his frustration after a Curry mistake or misplay, which was typically followed with Acie Law at the scorer’s table. Curry is averaging just 33 minutes per game this season compared with last year when he averaged 36.2 minutes per game. But that tells only a sliver of the story.”

Curry’s been just as he’s always been, extremely respectful and polite young man. I remember them being down by 3 against Dallas with maybe 20 ticks left and Smart takes Curry out of the game…..the average player, of his same talent, is half way going upside dudes head……………Mike Woodson

Keith Smart needed to get the Warriors to the playoffs this season. I hope a new (better) coach will finally utilize all the talent they have for a post-season push.

    No, their record will.

  • Anthony

curry needs to learn how to pass…. shoots to damn much…. too many good players on that team for them to miss the playoffs.. dlee needds alot more touches

he is a defense liability …..n the clutch Monta Ellis is flatout a better closer itsnt even close

if a coach can’t pull a player then he can’t be much of a coach.

Curry will be a Knick as soon as Walsh ships Douglas and Walker over to the Warriors. Make it happen, Dolan.

  • Hum

    not so Smart huh?

I pointed this out during the preseason, after I went to the Golden State Phoenix game, Smart was taking Curry out every time he made any kind of mistake. And Curry was also the only player on the court Smart was actively angry with when he messed up. I think its raised expectations that Smart doesn’t know how to deal with.. You gotta let the kid fail, and fix the problem in the moment, that’s how you learn to be a closer, because in late game situations things are always going to go wrong sooner or later

    I gotta Monta Ellis jersey

Curry is smart young pg with skills. He is also weakbodied with average speed and subpar strength. Monta Ellis is the truth, a true undercover NBA supastar, who I think is read to be fulltime ballhandler and playmaker for the Warriors. Trade Curry to where he is waiting to go, the Knicks, for Fields and Douglas. fields is a defensive 2 who can hit 3s and he is a Stanford guy. no brainer folks.

the minutes i’ll partially blame on his on-and-off injuries this year, but Keith Smart doesn’t play him as much as he should even when he’s healthy.
monta is indeed very capable of handling the ball, and even though he has decent assist numbers, i makes a lot of terrible decisions regarding to shot selections and defense. and david lee is good, but he’s not THAT good. so curry remains the most valuable asset on this warriors team. if anything, the warriors should trade monta and david lee for a legit all-star big man who can run the pick and roll with curry.

Monta Ellis is NOT a point guard. He plays best off the ball, though he’s a decent ball-handler/play-maker too. But a point guard he is not.

i can tell a lot of you guys don’t catch too many warrior games. smart doesn’t just mess up curry’s minutes, his rotations are horrible.
many games, the warriors are up by 10+ going into the 4th. smart often sits monta until there’s about 4-5 minutes left in the game, when the other team goes on a huge run, and the warriors end up losing because the starters come back too late. smart definitely was not ready to take on a team

Well, Curry was hyped as the next Steve Nash because of his shooting abilities and pass first attitude. When you have Monta Ellis on your team who takes more than 20 shots a game, you can’t have a point guard trying to score 20 plus points every game. He’s turnover prone, and doesn’t get many assists.

David Lee’s numbers have fallen because he’s only getting 13 shots a game.

Curry plays no defense(not bad defense), and with such a high octane offense, how has Curry only had 4 games with 10 or more assists? Even Ellis has had more games with 10+ assists.

@Kyle… Curry actually tries very hard on defense even though his athletic ability limits him. An assist is a basket made off a pass well if the basket is not made then there is no assist given! Curry passes the ball way more then Monte but a great deal of his great passes are not converted!!! Because Monte is a I need the ball in my had to score player and not a great jump shooter or 3 point shooter he can’t go there for assist and that’s 20 shots per game most in the NBA! The David lee is also better and likes to face up and score! There is wright who is a shooter but to get assist from 1 shooter and some bum ass big men(not talk in about lee) is very hard! Not to mention he play 10 less minutes per game then Monte and the the whole offense goes through Monte! If the offense went through curry like it does through Nash then you would see Nash like numbers!!! Her only takes 13shots per game!!! That’s hardly tryina score 20 that’s what Monte does and takes forced shots and stupid shots! He averages more assist the Monte and less turnovers then Monte!! Curry is more valuable to a team then Monte is coach smart just is handcuffing curry and that’s why we are reading this article
