David Stern Pushing for International Goaltending Rule

Stern told 790 The Ticket in Miami that he will push for the ball to be in play once it hits the rim: “Well I’m going to urge the owners — and it’s not very radical but we were talking about it for awhile — to adopt the international rule on basket interference. That is to say, once the ball hits the rim it’s in play. Because I think that it’s too hard to call. I think that we don’t want to stop the game every time to see if it’s the right call, but the camera that looks down on the basket can tell the story if the refs have gotten it right. And it’s just impossible to call to make whether the ball’s touching the rim, on the rim, off the rim or the like. And I think that would make the game faster, better, and less controversial. And I think we’re going to be putting in more — I forget the exact number — just more replay opportunities because we really want to get it right. So those are the biggest things. I also think we’re going to be talking about cutting out a timeout or two to move the game along. The last period, even in a close game, shouldn’t begin to approach an hour.”

Only if we call it “The Dwight Howard Rule”

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

The only rule I wouldn’t mind taking off is offensive goaltending.. now that’s wack.

  • Atsushi

    Less timeouts would be cool.

    I agree with Darth Stern.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    Yeah…no offensive goaltending…that’s a terrible rule.

  • Zabba

    Less timeouts, please.

    I hate goaltending rules, period.

Howza ’bout we take out the half circle for charges and stop calling offensive fouls. Maybe slowly but surely we can put an end to the ” Let’s run in front of the aggressive offensive player and fall down upon contact” type of play.

  • JL

yes walt williams! please someone make that happen. i hate that kind of pseudo defense. but really if they allow offensive goaltending then the defensive goaltending must be allowed to make it a fair playing field for the defense. So basically guys will be grabbing it off the rim whenever they can. i would have a tall guy by the rim at all times and wait for ashooter to shoot. then jump to time it properly and pluck it out of hte basket once it touches the rim. this’ll work unless it’s a straight swish. guaranteed rebound.

This is quite possibly the smartest rule change ever made. It allows for much more exciting play. Let’s say your team’s up 2 with 5 seconds to go. The other team shoots a 3, it hits the rim andddd WHAM your center knocks that ish out. GAME.

  • NJ4Life

gotta swish it to win it.

  • Bad Bad Leroy Brown

I understand that this is a great rule change. But Stern’s reasoning behind is weak. He’s talking like the refs are stopping every 5 mins. to check for goaltending or something.

  • CONEY ISLANDER

I hope he passes this and NBA players REFUSE to incorporate it into the game. Save that bullsh*t for FIBA!

Am I the only one to think this is retarded? This is the dumbest rule in basketball. A made shot should be a made shot. Wtf is this, beer pong?

  • robb

    Make it happen Emperor

  • Manu

sterns losin his f***** mind…dudes 100 yrs old get in a young commish who doesnt rig games and isnt a total fkn dumba**…..how would this garb work? dudes an idiot

  • 2KInsider

I wish they would take free throws out of the game. This isn’t golf! Let the allow the starters to have 6 fouls and every bench player only gets 2 fouls before fouling out.

the dan lebatard show is the funniest sports show ive ever heard.

Offensive goaltending isn’t the best, but you have to make it fair for both sides. It isn’t fair for a defender not to be allowed to wack the ball off the rim if the offensive player can jump up and dunk it.
HOWEVER, this totally f*cks the offensive player up–we’re never going to see any lucky bounces… Everything has to be a swish.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Can you imagine Allan Houston’s Game 5 buzzer-beater over the Miami Heat if they’d changed the rules back then? Zo would have swiped that sh!t off the front of the rim…

In other news, Dwight Howard thinks he can average 25 rebounds next year if “a certain rule is passed.”

  • 2KInsider

Will this rule be in the WNBA as well?

  • Ali

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! There should be defensive basket interference because thats a possible 1-3 points you could be taking away from the offensive player. But offensive goaltending is stupid because the offensive player should be allowed to do whatever he wants to his shot. This forces defenders to actually BOX OUT and put bodys on guys.

  • Heals

Interesting point about some of the memorable shots that have bounced around the rim before dropping, but I’m in favor of the refs having 1 less thing to think about…

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

We should get rid of Carrying, and have the NBA go AND1 for a season Lol!!!

  • horsey

i’ve never seen a carrying call that wasn’t immediately preceded by that player jawing to the ref. 99% of the time they let it go, that other 1% is them just flexing their whistles.

  • TacTownBidness

Focus on bringing a team back to Seattle asshole. . .

  • Hambone

They should have a rule where superstars get called for traveling when they travel.

  • Groves

make this rule happen and eliminate the offensive goaltending rule

  • smoovemann

everyone hates the offensive goaltending rule,i kinda do too … but think about when the other team does it against your favorite team in a crucial game, how would you feel then??

  • marc

I really don’t like this rule change. Leave it for FIBA. If you want to change a rule change that tech crap. Getting called for a tech for making a face. This year alone i seen so many techs being called for being passionate

riggs- the dan lebatard show is hillarious. im listening to it right now

They should allow 3 steps instead of 2 cuz its not like they call it anyway. Refs need to become more aware of players switching pevets before they dribble. Theres a youtube clip of Corey Maggette doing it. And David Stern should have to wear a baggy jersey, tight ass skinny jeans saggin extra hard, at least two gold chain, and a big iced out watch to every game during black history month.

  • Red Star

The Angel of Stern has a point!
