Grant Hill: Misdiagnosis Destroyed Ankle, Career

Grant Hill, on Jason Whitlock’s podcast, said the Detroit Pistons mismanaged his ankle injury, possibly due to standard Isiah Thomas set. PistonPowered has the transcript: “‘I (had been) told everything was fine. I even found out that certain team doctors were questioning whether I was really hurt, thinking I was soft or whatever. This was after I had pulled myself from Game 2 against the Heat. At that time, when I found out I had broken my ankle, as crazy as this sounds, I was relieved. I finally had some confirmation, I finally had proof that I’m really not making it up.’”

He was one of the best when he was starting to hit his primes, it`s unfortunate we didn`t get to see it

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I tend to believe him when he says this.
Shame, Grant Hill was the LeBron James of the 90′s.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

So, how does the illuminati play into all this? J/k (I read into that crap a little out of curiousaty) Hill was great (along with his 1st pair of shoes). Still a decent role player.

  • mj23

not lebron beter defender passer and he his more athletic and hill dint play long enough to prove himself and one more thing DURABILYTY is something you work first and g hill dint lebron did ass a 18 year older not as a 38 year older

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    mj23 – huh???

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

^ huh? I dint catch all that.

  • mj23

durabylity is abilyty to avoid injuries :P

  • mj23

and we will never know how good grant woudl be if not the injury

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

mj23 I know that Grant Hill was a complete athlete when he came to the league after four years of college. So his ankle injury didn’t happen because he wasn’t trained well enough.
Do you think that LeBron could play on with an medically messed up ankle?

Dudes typing with hockey gloves on

  • mj23

ok so lets stop talking about it there are no ifs in sports and g hill is not 2 time mvp so lets stop lebron vs g hill debate

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

LeBron didn’t play with MJ in his prime either.
With your screen name, you oughta know that.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    * I mean during the same era as MJ in his prime

  • mj23

and what g hill did to mj huh? :P

  • mj23

    with mj? you mean against

  • http://slamonline dan

i know a pistons team Dr and he told me Hill messed his ankle up during a weird hotel room ‘game’

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

LeBron is in a class all his own in terms of combination of size, speed and athleticism. We all know that.
Me saying Hill was the “LeBron James” of that time is due to the fact that he was as versatile as LeBron is now.
And I’m surprised you ain’t changed your name to LBJ6 at this point.

  • HAMMER

Grant Hill was Pippen but w/better ball handling, quicker, and w/a better offensive arsenal. As much as Pip was my boy back n the day, but its tru. Hill would’ve been n the HOF, no questions asked

  • mj23

what man now people got pip damn pip was the best on ball defender(ok maybe gary payton was beter)

  • mj23
  • HAMMER

Never once did I mention that Hill was a better defender than Pip

  • mj23

yes i know so dont compere them

  • Bad Bad Leroy Brown

    @mj23

You do know that there are punctuation keys on the keyboard, right?
If you knew anything about basketball history, you would know that before this injury, Hill WAS the LeBron of his time. In that he would be the guy to carry the torch for the next generation. Hill had all of the versatility of LeBron PLUS the clutch gene that LJ is missing.

LOL, I told Mj about his grammar on that Kobe over Emeka video. It’s importance is obviously underrated

  • NJ4Life

    Not everyone graduates middle school…

  • HAMMER

How could u not compare the two? They played the same position and the similarities n their games r obvious. Maybe u just never saw Pip and Hill go @ it back n the day

  • mj23

yes but i you talking about carrer comparing there is no way you can compere, injuries hapen

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @Phantom:
I’m being an @ss on this one, but your comment @5:30pm is grammatically incorrect.
    It’s “its”, not “it’s”.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

mj23, you’re talking about current Grant Hill while we’re talking about pre-injury Grant Hill.
Yes, dude was injured and all, but BEFORE the injury he was a beast, plain and simple.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

What is the Isiah Thomas standard?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

NEvermind, Isiah even gets the blame for this, lol.

  • Bad Bad Leroy Brown

^That is dumb logic. You CAN ‘compere’ their careers. The same way you could bring up Penny Hardaway in a discussion about tall, atheltic PG’s. The same way elusive running backs are likened to Gale Sayers in the NFL. In a way, it’s similar to steroids in baseball. If they never happened, the history of the sport would be much different. I’m sure if you take Hill’s stats from his pre-injury days, and progress them in the way a healthy player’s would increase over a career, his numbers would be incredible.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

^Maybe it is because how they (Pistons) handled Isiah’s career ending heel injury.

  • mj23

and what this is grammar lesson?

  • Bad Bad Leroy Brown

…of course at that is aimed at mj23.

  • Bad Bad Leroy Brown

    …aimed @mj23

  • HAMMER

No mj23. I was not talking bout career wise. Its obvious Pip had the better career. But like Enigmatic said, Hill was a bad mofo b4 injuries happened

  • mj23

was a beast there are no ifs in sports and injuries hapen

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Ok, Philo. @Allenp I guess they’re referring to that big game Isiah had on a bad anlke(43 Points, in the Finals). I guess they’re saying the Pistons treated Grant’s injury leniently because of that, or that occurrence at least had something to do with it

  • Bad Bad Leroy Brown

There is nothing hypothetical about these statements. There are no ‘ifs’ in saying that before Hill was hurt, the ceiling on his career was almost non existent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

..Or maybe the Pistons just overall suck when dealing with heel/ankle injuries

  • robb

Ineptitude and lack of class= Detroit

  • JTaylor21

What the f*ck is a “clutch gene”? There’s isn’t a gene out there that makes players clutch.

  • robb

    ^^^^^
Of course there is. It’s called the Kobe gene. Didn’t you know that?

  • mj23

lol stop the gramma thing i am from europe and wile i was a kid i dint had english lessons so i am not great PEACE

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i just threw up, everywhere after I read Robb’s comment, and I mean everywhere. Its called courage and it comes from Lions.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    What does “compere” mean?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Robb….I’m a Kobe fan and you’re stupid comment is making us Kobe fans that know he isn’t the greatest player of all-time or anything like that look like we think he’s the greatest, please stop.

  • robb
