Julius Erving Not a Big Fan of Today’s NBA

Dr. J tells the NY Times that he doesn’t enjoy watching the NBA today a heck of a lot, though he can often be seen doing promo work for the League: “Q. Do you enjoy watching games instead of playing? A. ‘I never sit down and watch a whole game from beginning to end. I always catch parts of games and highlights. I’ve never been a great fan. I’m always a little critical.’ Q. What team do you like to watch? A. ‘I like the Spurs. They used to play with [Tim] Duncan in the post more. But they’ve moved away from it now. They try to spread out. Tony Parker drives the lane and dishes and Manu Ginobili does something. The offense doesn’t go through Duncan as much as it used to.’ Q. What players do you enjoy the most? A. ‘I like watching Kobe, LeBron, Dwyane and Durant play.’ Q. How is the game different today? A. ‘There was more post play when I played. First option was always inside. We went inside out. If inside wasn’t there, you try and impose your will. Then you settle for outside.”

maaan, he didn’t even say that.
i get it though, slow day since there were no games. gotta put some kind of story up.

  • Jono

guys like melo are ruining the league.

  • Anthony

duncan dosent get the ball as much for many reasons….. hes not that good and hes gettn old…. plus the west big man arent as weak as the ones you usta dunk on

  • greg

which strong big men are you talking about?

  • http://pointingnofingers.wordpress.com/ twinparadox

@Jono…where the hell did that comment come from?

    Game’s Different, but entertaining anyways.

  • Riggs

@Jono: actually if you knew how to read you would see dr.jay PREFERS melo’s style of play. @anthony: “the west big men (sic?) arent as weak….wow go watch some youtube clips on how the game used to be back when dr jay was in his prime. Modern centers would be punked out of the court.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

In other words, “Unless the NBA is cutting me a check, I don’t give a darn.”

  • Kent

Dr. J give me a break, the NBA is just as exciting if not more exciting than it ever has been. I’ll say that there were greater team back in the day. more dynasties. But who wants to see a team when 6+ times. that boring. like bill russell winning 11 times. the NBA wasnt competitive back then. Nobody wants to see the game played in the post the majority of the time, people want to see dunks, crossovers, give and gos, etc. The league has way more exciting players than it was back then (DRose Kobe, LeBron, Dwight, Shaq, Dwade, Durant, Westbrook, Blake Griffin, Rondo, Garnett, Iverson, etc. i love the NBA.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^Anthony..
you are a complete and total idiot and you have no f*ckin idea what your talkin bout.. duncan can do work on anyone in the post.. the only reason he hasnt spent alot of time with the ball in the post is because of the genious coaching of pop, he is saving him as much as possible for the playoffs.. ppl who dont understand basketball really annoy the hell outta me, just thought id throw that out there

  • Addam

Too many ads when you watch a full game. It’s too easy to change the channel once you’ve seen the same annoying commercial for the 5th time in an hour.

    NBA = Nothin’ But Ads

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

I seen him watch a Bulls game or two.
He knows he’s a big Bench Mob fan. lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

sound like another old bitter dude.

  • robb

@Slick Ric yeah I love Dr. J but I hate it when old people starts talking about the old days and how f*cked up everything is these days.

  • Anthony

lol i said wat i said becuz its da tuth @c cantrell.. you make my point…. pop is saving him becuz he is old….. thats the only reason why u save players and maybe i shuda made myslef cleareR…DUNCAN IS GOOD BUT HES NOT DA SAME… AND IF YOU KNOW SO MUCH WHY YOU UP HERECOMMENTING INSTEAD OF TALKN ON ESPN. GTFOH YOU WANNA BE HUBIE BROWN

  • jimmer

He didn’t even say he didn’t like the NBA!!!! He said ‘NEVER BEEN A FAN OF SITTING AND WATCHING A WHOLE GAME’ WTF Slam? That’s a total garbage punk*ss move, man. And Duncan, by the way, is shot; he can barely get an inch off the floor, every game I’ve seen him play the last two seasons he’s had his post moves swatted multiple times. Every game.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

damn y’all. im bored as hell. Anthony commenting calmly and then going HAM was funny to read though.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

  • MJ23LBJ6

    to sad thats true

  • http://YouTube.com/user/Uncle05Sam Earl

Dr. J is the man, and he’s mostly right.

  • Turk

Reminds me of andre 300 passing it back and forth to will ferrell in the post the way he describes his playing days.

  • ripcity8

F***k THe POLICE ni gga who cares what this old ni**Er says boitch ps white people rule. hahahahahahahaha k k k

  • Heals

Bring back hand-checking, only call flagrants when necessary, ditch the “I didn’t see who started it” double tech’s and make refs available for media questioning after games would be good places to start…

  • ripcity8

    I hate coulour people

  • fruizm

    @airs…hahaha i also enjoyed Anthony’s metamorphosis process!!

  • MJ23LBJ6

old n***a? lets think he has much more money is a nba legend and he acomplished something in his life and you are a guy that sits and writes your stupid comments dont talk if dont know the game, teach your self about it first and HAVE SOME RESPECT

  • MUBWAR

man f these oldies and the league at its golden age bullsh1t and whatnot. The modern era might be missing out on good mobile centers but they make it up for extremely athletic point guards and some of the best wing players in NBA history.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

There are a lot of issues with today’s NBA, but I’m sure it’s no worse than it was back then. The style of play is much different, but not worse. I think a lot of the older heads see the amount of money these young dudes get and feel like they don’t deserve it. The league is just too different from what they were used to.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Yeah, I’m hella bored too today.
    I miss the Post Up!
    And ripcity8 sound like a neo-nazi.
    Take that trash somewhere else.

  • burnt_chicken

” I’ve never been a great fan.” As in: NEVER. Not as in referring to the game of today specifically. Slamonline shouldn’t be taking such liberties with League royalty–it approaches travesty.

  • Andrea

Ok, Addam, you complain about the many ads during NBA games. And is it any different in college hoops, when people were forced to watch the same commercials over and over and over for 3 weeks during the tourney? Or is it any different in football when you have to sit through countless commercials during every single game? Baseball anyone?

People just want to complain for the sake of complaining.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Julius doesn’t like todays NBA cuz he could never figure out how to shoot with those big ol baseball mits he calls hands. Its hard to like something you don’t understand how to do.

  • Andrea

Actually Dr. J said that he’s NEVER been a great fan of watching games on TV..meaning ALWAYS, not just TODAY’s game. Guess people can’t comprehend. Not that SLAM helped them with the headline.

  • Fat Lever

Please re-read Kent’s post and tell me what doesn’t fit. It should be blatantly obvious.

  • JTaylor21

    I hate uncolored people.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Iverson? lol

  • Fat Lever

nbk wins. WTF? Can’t casually throw that in there, like no one’s gonna pick that up. People need to move on…

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

    I hate the color purple.

  • paul

Crossovers and freight train dunks are pretty boring, but they excite fans who don’t know the game. Every sport has that. Non-baseball fans love homeruns. Non-football fans love the Big Hit or the Big Pass. A certain kind of play comes to represent the sport as a whole, so the pro-leagues skew the rules and enforcement of the rules to encourage those plays, and that’s how each sports league becomes a caricature of the game it is supposed to represent.

  • Andrea

paul, I love basketball and I enjoy dunks too. Any problems with that? Or maybe we should stick to watch games like the UConn/Butler one? You know, the PURENESS!!!! Meh.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ehh my thing is, more people are short then tall right? Granted the game originally didn’t have the same rules that it does now, but that doesn’t mean its a caricature of what is was “supposed” to represent. Basketball is actually just a game to play when the weather is to bad to play a sport outside, that’s all it was meant to represent. And considering the sport is now geared to allow perimeter players more freedoms in hopes of speeding up the game. (you know cuz running all offensive sets through big men, with no three point line, and no rules against zone defenses slowed the game to a snails pace which according to the traditionalist like Julius who played before there was a 3pt line is what the game is “supposed to represent”) it makes sense that its more popular then ever, more people are short, the game is geared for the “average player” (even though an average player is still massively larger then a normal person) which makes it more exciting and easier to get involved in for the average person. So not only is the game deeper with more layers, its also more complicated, and more fun to watch. Sounds like evolution to me.

  • Andrea

Why some of you who seem to dislike the NBA are even reading SLAM, a blog mostly about the NBA? Go watch figure skating then.

    Gee whiz.

The NBA is great and I’ll take it any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Anyone who truly understands the game and closely follows the league knows it.

I’m of the school of thought that many “fans” don’t even realize how good they got it with the NBA these days, especially considering the many stars in today’s games. People are NEVER happy, sadly.

What were you guys saying 10 years ago when Jordan retired and there very few, if any, trascendent players? So yeah, it could be worse.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

Anthony you sound more and more ignorant with evey comment you post.. maybe you need to watch some hubie brown you dumb son of a b*tch, ya might learn a thing or two

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    I just hate people.

  • JTaylor21

I hate black bastards, I hate black pants, I hate black pepper, I hate black keys on a piano, I hate my gums cuz they black, I hate whoopi goldberg lips, I hate the back of forest whitaker’s neck, most of all I hate that black a** wesley snipes.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

I no longer really post here because someone can take anyone’s name and write this racist garbage and slam does nothing. Slam’s comment section officially sucks.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

LOL @ JTaylor! Nice “Don’t Be A Menace” reference.
    RIP Bernie Mac.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

Co-sign Allenp lmao. People in general just suck.

  • http://slamonline.com c_cantrell

I’m annoying, immature, and way too emotional in all of my comments.

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

I’m with Jukai and Dr. J.
I really miss the good old times of posting.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Shout out @Nassau County.
One of the most racist counties in the United States of America.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^Speedy..
its gotten to a point of where i sincerely respect a true post player more than any other player in the league.. demarcus cousins is coming into his own as a true post player.. sullinger may be the only true center to come up to the league for the next several years

  • treetrunks

Slam, that was weak…he didn’t say today’s NBA..he’ never been a fan!!! and don’t some of you actually read the articles..crazy..well at least it got some you going…

  • Scott

    Sullinger isn’t a true center.

  • knickzvet82

    I hate….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Jared Sullinger is 6’8″ wtf are you talking about.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Yeah, C_Cantrell, that was a comment fail. Sullinger will be an undersized power forward, much less a center.
Also, the high school class of 2012 has some promising centers.
Isaiah Austin, Kaleb Tarczewski, Andre Drummond, Cameron Ridley among them.
I’m not saying any of them are the next Dwight Howard, I’m just saying.

  • MikeC.

My only beef with the present ‘game’ is that players are no longer allowed to stare down dudes after they dunk on them. If anyone pulled out the “Shawn Kemp multiple point after the Lister Blister”, they’d catch a suspension. I also miss the lack of hard fouls. Every hard foul is now a flagrant. Unless someone gets hit with a closed fist or a straight-up clothesline, it’s not a flagrant.

  • MikeC.

To those who come on here and post hate comments about races/religions/nationalities/etc, cut it out. This is a forum for hating Lebron and/or Kobe depending on your affiliations. Let’s keep our hateful comments pointed where they belong: pointed at the Heat & the Lakers, depending on which team played most recently.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

And once again the Slam office fills with hyuks watching comments from illiterates.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

Wait – wasn’t Dr. J the person who changed the way the NBA is playing? If it wasn’t for him, everyone would be playing like the Spurs.
You only got yourself to blame, Julius

  • BBaller

Plus i was on such i high because my Spurs won,as did Boston and Chicago and the almighty Lakers lost. Why do you post comments like 4:40pm
( clearly not jtaylor21) but not others SLAM.
Hoopsworld.com is looking better by the day.

  • BBaller

To the 4:40pm post, what rank in the KKK are you?
To think there is a “person” in this world to even intentionally or as a joke push the buttons on a keypad and post those combined words makes me feel quite low about today’s world. Shame on you and seriously ………….go f yourself.
    This is from a person.
    Sick of this SLAM

  • BBaller

My post should be flipped in time

  • BBaller

Bought my first SLAM mag in 98, been online since whitehoteboy days, out after this.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I still don’t understand why Slam has not gone with a log-in system…

  • First & Foremost

LOL BBaller – it was a movie quote. Don’t Be A Menace to Society While Drinking Your Juice In Da Hood. Bernie Mac plays a cop that doesn’t like black people. I suggest you go watch that movie.

  • Cizzo

    All of yall are stupid…..

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

i meant to say true post player.. my bad

  • Spursnation

Big men win titles. It’s sad that post play has been erased from today’s game. This PG thing is a fad. The day Dwight Howard leaves the league is going to be the saddest day in NBA history: the death of the center. Would it kill 6’10″+ guys to grow a pair and stop taking cowardly jumpshots and go to work in the box?

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^Cizzo..
    F*ck you buddy

  • BostonBaller

I love it when fans criticize the older players for their opinion (which was taken out of context by the way) It’s hard to compare eras so I rarely try, I do know that the rules are a bit softer. (traveling and assists come to mind)

  • Zed Braden

Doc knows the game and the way it should be played. He will always be my favorite player. I like the game a lot now, but when Doc retired, I stopped watching full games as well. I also just check out the highlights online. Thanks for publishing his comments.
