Julius Erving Not a Big Fan of Today’s NBA

Dr. J tells the NY Times that he doesn’t enjoy watching the NBA today a heck of a lot, though he can often be seen doing promo work for the League: “Q. Do you enjoy watching games instead of playing? A. ‘I never sit down and watch a whole game from beginning to end. I always catch parts of games and highlights. I’ve never been a great fan. I’m always a little critical.’ Q. What team do you like to watch? A. ‘I like the Spurs. They used to play with [Tim] Duncan in the post more. But they’ve moved away from it now. They try to spread out. Tony Parker drives the lane and dishes and Manu Ginobili does something. The offense doesn’t go through Duncan as much as it used to.’ Q. What players do you enjoy the most? A. ‘I like watching Kobe, LeBron, Dwyane and Durant play.’ Q. How is the game different today? A. ‘There was more post play when I played. First option was always inside. We went inside out. If inside wasn’t there, you try and impose your will. Then you settle for outside.”

    Shout out @Nassau County.
One of the most racist counties in the United States of America.

    ^Speedy..
its gotten to a point of where i sincerely respect a true post player more than any other player in the league.. demarcus cousins is coming into his own as a true post player.. sullinger may be the only true center to come up to the league for the next several years

  • treetrunks

Slam, that was weak…he didn’t say today’s NBA..he’ never been a fan!!! and don’t some of you actually read the articles..crazy..well at least it got some you going…

  • Scott

    Sullinger isn’t a true center.

  • knickzvet82

    I hate….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Jared Sullinger is 6’8″ wtf are you talking about.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Yeah, C_Cantrell, that was a comment fail. Sullinger will be an undersized power forward, much less a center.
Also, the high school class of 2012 has some promising centers.
Isaiah Austin, Kaleb Tarczewski, Andre Drummond, Cameron Ridley among them.
I’m not saying any of them are the next Dwight Howard, I’m just saying.

My only beef with the present ‘game’ is that players are no longer allowed to stare down dudes after they dunk on them. If anyone pulled out the “Shawn Kemp multiple point after the Lister Blister”, they’d catch a suspension. I also miss the lack of hard fouls. Every hard foul is now a flagrant. Unless someone gets hit with a closed fist or a straight-up clothesline, it’s not a flagrant.

To those who come on here and post hate comments about races/religions/nationalities/etc, cut it out. This is a forum for hating Lebron and/or Kobe depending on your affiliations. Let’s keep our hateful comments pointed where they belong: pointed at the Heat & the Lakers, depending on which team played most recently.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

And once again the Slam office fills with hyuks watching comments from illiterates.

Wait – wasn’t Dr. J the person who changed the way the NBA is playing? If it wasn’t for him, everyone would be playing like the Spurs.
You only got yourself to blame, Julius

  • BBaller

Plus i was on such i high because my Spurs won,as did Boston and Chicago and the almighty Lakers lost. Why do you post comments like 4:40pm
( clearly not jtaylor21) but not others SLAM.
Hoopsworld.com is looking better by the day.

  • BBaller

To the 4:40pm post, what rank in the KKK are you?
To think there is a “person” in this world to even intentionally or as a joke push the buttons on a keypad and post those combined words makes me feel quite low about today’s world. Shame on you and seriously ………….go f yourself.
    This is from a person.
    Sick of this SLAM

  • BBaller

My post should be flipped in time

  • BBaller

Bought my first SLAM mag in 98, been online since whitehoteboy days, out after this.

I still don’t understand why Slam has not gone with a log-in system…

  • First & Foremost

LOL BBaller – it was a movie quote. Don’t Be A Menace to Society While Drinking Your Juice In Da Hood. Bernie Mac plays a cop that doesn’t like black people. I suggest you go watch that movie.

  • Cizzo

    All of yall are stupid…..

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

i meant to say true post player.. my bad

  • Spursnation

Big men win titles. It’s sad that post play has been erased from today’s game. This PG thing is a fad. The day Dwight Howard leaves the league is going to be the saddest day in NBA history: the death of the center. Would it kill 6’10″+ guys to grow a pair and stop taking cowardly jumpshots and go to work in the box?

    ^Cizzo..
    F*ck you buddy

  • BostonBaller

I love it when fans criticize the older players for their opinion (which was taken out of context by the way) It’s hard to compare eras so I rarely try, I do know that the rules are a bit softer. (traveling and assists come to mind)

Doc knows the game and the way it should be played. He will always be my favorite player. I like the game a lot now, but when Doc retired, I stopped watching full games as well. I also just check out the highlights online. Thanks for publishing his comments.
