Keith Smart Let Go By the Golden State Warriors

By Sam Riches / @sam_riches

After restructuring their roster and taking a step back in 2010, the Golden State Warriors improved by only ten wins this season. As a result, Keith Smart is on his way out. The Warriors announced their decision this morning:

“It’s never easy to make difficult decisions, especially when it involves someone that we have a great deal of respect for like Keith Smart,’ said Warriors Owner Joe Lacob.  ‘After meeting extensively with Larry Riley and Bob Myers, we came to the conclusion that a change was necessary at this particular time.  I think Keith did an admirable job this season and he should be commended for many of the positive things that transpired both on and off the floor.  The team showed improvement and their effort was never in question.  However, we’ve elected to pursue a new path and we wish Keith the very best.  He’s a quality person and we thank him for the time he invested with our organization.’”

Smart seemed to sense the writing on a the wall at the beginning of the month, stating:

“I would say that anywhere else, other than right here, people would look at it and say it was a good season,’ Smart said before Sunday’s game against Sacramento. ‘I’ve done everything I could possibly do, and for some strange reason, people (don’t recognize it). Anywhere else in the country, people would say we are moving in the right direction.’”

Smart’s contract for next season was only partially guaranteed, and since majority owner Joe Lacob was not in power when the decision was made to replace Don Nelson with Smart, the move doesn’t come as a total surprise.

It’s been awhile since the Warriors were the most exciting team in the world, but if their young core continues to develop there soon could be reason to believe once again.

    surprise! ok, not really.

Not a fan of this choice. I really think Smart is going to be a very good coach in this league. What did they expect from him with that roster?

  • Dillantradamus

Just a random idea: With Smart gone, time to have D’Antoni use his seven second offense over in the Golden State, where it would be a perfect fit for his run-and-gun style. Plus, this leaves that opening in NYC for Phil Jackson to finish where his NBA career first began.

new coach would mean another transition year for the warriors! i was hoping for some continuity. they were doing better this year.

  • Brahsef

Just get some damn depth on the team. And a center that can shoot better than 30% from the stripe.

  • Joe

Match made in heaven for D’Antoni

    Is this really a shocker?

  • Kas

    smart move

  • RunNGun

    Bring in Larry Brown!

Do any of you guys live in Oklahoma? I gotta basketball tourney coming up the 28th of next month and could use a couple more players. Good players that is.

  • hillbilly

Indiana wants him. But, he can’t go back there.

  • Bimmer

@ c cantrell: where is it?

  • Josh E

Forget Larry Brown, dude has lost his touch. Bring in Rick Adelman! He had almost nothing to work with the last few years with the Rockets and they still had a winning record. Imagine what he could do for a young healthy team loaded with talent.

They should’ve kept him…they were doing better but with all the injuries, and lack of depth smmfh…these guys are headed back to the playoffs soon tho

  • Jono

    Bring back Nellie!

co-sign Josh E. I’d love to see Adelman take the reigns but I think he’s done. And keep Larry Brown off the sidelines, he’d make the Warriors a boring team to watch.

    thank god, finally !!
All Smart’s plays are letting Monte do everything as much as he want.
Smart totally wastes many smart players other than Monte.

adelman would want defense, which i’m not sure gstate players are interested in. would give them some new offensive punch though.

  • flash

adelman to the knicks, d’antoni to the warriors!

  • JD

    only ten wins?is that sarcasm?

  • Ali

Nothing will come good to this team. They should have done everything to keep some of those players from the 2006-2007 seasons. It seems like they have a revolving door policy! Start locking down your good players and grow together as a team!

    ^Bimmer..
The tourney is in Valliant, Oklahoma. Its in SE Oklahoma surounded by the towns of Broken Bow, Hugo, Idabel, and about 45 minutes from Paris, Texas.

Remember back in late November when Keith Smart was included in the SLAM Polladaday: Best New Coach? Click my name, I sure do. Looks like my choice of Monty Williams was a pretty good one, especially if the Hornets somehow can push the Lakers to 7 games and knock off the defending champs. Not saying it’s going to happen…just sayin.

Sad……..the team’s too flawed to win too many games. And he still put forth a 10 game improvement. And who in hell is available for them now?!?!

  • mannyec0409

I think this was a very dumb decision…he should have been given at least one more year to keep improving and building on what he was doing…
