Kevin Durant: ‘A Lot of People Forgot About Me This Year’

Aside from the Miami trio, Kevin Durant and the OKC Thunder were perhaps the most hyped storyline coming into this season, something that changed dramatically as the year progressed. KD wants his props, but is fine with flying under the radar to some degree. From HoopsHype: “I guess I’m flying under the radar,’the Oklahoma City forward said … But it was Durant who brought up the belief his Q rating has slipped this season. It all started when he was asked about being on the verge of winning a second straight scoring crown. ‘A lot of people forgot about me this year,’ said Durant, averaging 27.8 points. ‘So I guess if I get the scoring title, I guess people will remember me. Last year, I kind of jumped on the scene. I’m the old guy. I’m not going out there and averaging 40 points a game and stuff like that. So people forgot about me. So, hopefully, the scoring title I guess will let people to know, ‘Hey, I’m here still.’ … Durant’s name, though, hasn’t come up very much lately in MVP talk. He might not even crack the top five. Rose, James, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and Orlando center Dwight Howard figure to finish ahead of him, and perhaps Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki also will. But Durant insists not being regarded as a strong MVP candidate isn’t bothering him. In fact, he said Rose, whose Bulls are 57-20 after going 41-41 last season, should be handed the Maurice Podoloff Trophy. ‘No (dissatisfaction). I’m playing on a winning basketball team,’ Durant said of the Thunder (52-26), which clinched the Northwest Division on Wednesday. ‘I won 50 games. I’m in a tough conference, a tough division. I think the MVP goes to a guy that there team is like us last year when we went from 23 wins to 50 (even if Durant finished behind James, whose Cavaliers actually fell from 66 to 61 wins). That’s a big difference. With guys like D. Rose, they went from 41 to like 50-something right now. So it’s a big difference. We stayed the same.’”

    2 words: Russell Westbrook.

  • sledge

isnt that a good thing now maybe ron artest wont crowd u in the playoffs and make u like like a retarded third grader

  • JTaylor21

Another guy that the media and fans swear is humble yet the words out of his mouth tell a different story.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

This time last year, Durant was Derrick Rose….
Bron’s monster year was the only thing keeping him from MVP, and the WBC had people calling him a top 3 player.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

thunder will making plenty of noise in the playoffs this year

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Care to explain JTay? Sounded pretty humble to me.

    Co-sign JTaylor21.
Humility is stressing team goals and accomplishments. His TEAM won 50 games.
    Not him.

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

He should’ve won it LAST year. He didn’t deserve it this year. He just didn’t plan quite as well.

  • slamfan4life

    Durant just bein pissy yo

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

Not like you’re in a major market either!

  • Sizzle

He got way over hyped because of last year and his success with Team USA. Don’t get me wrong, he is a tremendous scorer, but I don’t see him as an MVP. Russell Westbrook is more valuable to that team IMO. James, Rose, and Howard are easily above him in the race. I would even argue DWade, Bryant, and Dirk too…

  • jimmer

Agreed – this lanky kid can score, but a 6-11 reggie miller ain’t got much of a case. He and Westbrook are about level now, but Russ has way more upside. Durant is basically a one trick pony, and last year he showed us his trick

  • Bulls2011champs

KD just get to the finals to play Drose and his boys and noone will be “forgetting” about you any time soon. Bulls/thunder finals matchup FTW!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

if this were college basketball KD would’ve won the MVP. Jimmer is to KD what Kemba is to Derrick Rose.

  • Sizzle

@LakeShow by him saying “a lot of people forgot about me” implies that he believes he isn’t getting enough hype or hype he deserves (rightly or wrongly). The statement in itself is not humble…

  • OvaChiken in G Major

That’s coz you too skinny KD. Put on some weight so cats can make you out son !!

  • Anthony

i told ppl he was hyped up… hes a superstar yess but hes not that exciting unless its a clutch jumper and hes been missin lately except for the knicks but any0ne could hit a game winner wit against them…….. Durant needs to just work on NOT gettn pushed around in da playoffs…

  • T-Money

i think it’s stupid that we’re asking all these guys to be humble, whatever that means. there’s less than 5 better basketball players than KD on the freaking planet, why shouldn’t he be boastful about that?

  • rob

    playing some D would help

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

All you people saying KD is overrated are ridiculous. You obviously don’t watch him play. There’s a REASON he scores so many points, even with Westbrook hogging the shot clock so much. He’s not perfect and he’s not the best in the game, but I’ll be darned if he’s not top 5.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

T-Money: I think Tim Duncan has pulled it off for over a decade.

  • RunNGun

Don’t worry KD… when you become a Knick, anything’s possible.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

Its not a lack of humility to say that you think you are a better basketball player than anyone else. A lack of humility is when you think you are a better PERSON than other people just because you’re you. Its when you think you’re a special person off the court just because you’re good at basketball. **coughkobebryantcough*

  • T-Money

caboose: you think timmy is humble? word? he’s not loud but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an aura about him.

  • Hugo Loon

it is kinda true…KD been going under the radar…but its mostly cause last year everyone was like dammmnn, whereas this year people expected him to be as good as he is…

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Why do people want these guys to be humble? If you’re in the L, that means you’re one of the top 500 basketball players in the WORLD.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Who cares? Bring on the playoffs already!

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Duncan is humble? I remember him saying something to the tune that he can still play like an All-Star and it’s just that Pop won’t unleash him ’til the playoffs. Don’t confuse silent swagger with humility.

  • True H

I KNOW people are calling Kevin durant cocky. He was the freaking scoring champion last year and his thunder gave the Lakers a run for their money in the playoffs. He’s simply saying expecting less than that is mildly disrespectful at this point. I agree.

  • andrew

the story this year from okc is russ westbrook. he put himself on the scene and made himself co no.1 with durant rather then the second option.
and i think the problem people have with this interview is kd doing a ‘hey look at me! im the scoring champ!’
we get it. but just dont announce it yourself lol let someone else say it.. thats what teammates are for lol

  • thor

Shut the hell up with that being humble ish. If you think about how it is being one of the best players in the world, then this is way more humble than many of us would be in his situation. Carm the f*** down fools you don’t know nothing, accept it.

  • Nick

    I did not.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ everything

    humble is boring.

  • Animalxxx13

KD is way overrated and the worst scoring champ in recent time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

did you even read the article? its about how kd has been somewhat underrated this year.. moron

  • Animalxxx13

Oh looks like Cantrell is getting all defensive over his MAN haha guess u didn’t understand the article

  • asgf

This guy is a rashard lewis with better athleticism and motivation. Mark my words right now. He’s a finesse player some people just cant get bulky cuz its not in their genetic makeup. so they just tune their post moves passing and jumper instead. You cant get 40 games without exersizing you just wont have the stamina. Unless your AI but hes 6ft and skinny as hel

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^A.. f*ckin idiot
