LeBron James: Now Part-Owner of Soccer Club Liverpool

LeBron is taking his talents to England and the world of pro soccer. His business talents, that is. From the WSJ: “Basketball star LeBron James is joining forces with renowned hedge-fund manager John Henry and veteran Hollywood producer Tom Werner in a deal that brings together one of the biggest stars in sports and two of the world’s most renowned teams. The deal between Mr. James and Fenway Sports Group will give Mr. James a minority interest in the soccer club Liverpool, which FSG owns. FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, is partnering with Mr. James’s sports-marketing firm, LRMR Branding & Marketing to become the exclusive world-wide representative for Mr. James. The deal marks the first time that a professional athlete at the top of his game has taken an ownership interest in a team with the size and reach of Liverpool, which is one of the most popular and powerful sports teams in the world … Executives involved with the deal declined to comment on the financial terms, but a person familiar with the details said FSG would receive a small commission on any deals it landed for Mr. James. Mr. James said he was ‘humbled’ by the deal and looked forward to donning a red Liverpool jersey and visiting Anfield, the team’s legendary stadium. ‘The first time I stepped on an NBA court I became a businessman,’ said Mr. James, who is 26 years old. ‘This is a great opportunity for me.’”

No, the first time you stepped on an NBA court you got paid the amount of money to have business people guide you. I highly doubt stepping on a court prepared you to look over a companies books and gauge profitability and strong business models.

Good luck, and nice to see that you are working with the appropriate people to make decisions for your future.

The Heatles. Liverpool. I wonder if that’s part of the reason.

  • HAMMER

Not bad. He now rubs shoulders with Luis Suarez and Maxi Rodriguez

regardless of what you think about the man or his game, it feels good to see a young brotha making moves instead of gambling and buying freaking boats. i remember people predicting that his finances would crumble after he booted goodwin to put his guys in. heck, people are even saying now that lrmr is bad for him even though he leads the league in endorsements by far because goodwin supposedly laid the ground work for all of his existing deals. what are they going to say now?

this is a business business move, dividends are marginal, his status will grow, on our side of the pond and whenever wherever Liverpool plays, his name shall be mentioned and that is a huge move on it’s own

wowwwww…just watched First Take and seen the fool Skip Bayless knocking him for it….Skip is racist, I don’t care, he just is. I know when someone is racist, I got like spidey senses and dude just sets them off for me….how are you going to get angry at Lebron for investing in a piece of a soccer franchise, when Steve Nash is the majority owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps???

  • http://nba.com EJ

How is Skip racist, when he just doesn’t like Lebron? He’s a Kobe and MJ fan, and they’re black too.

  • Riggs

he’s a minority shareholder? meh not too much of a profit net-worth wise, but good for his books.

  • T-Money

RK: What was Skip’s angle? I’m curious as to how that could be seen as a negative.

  • TRIMEGADON

lebron is humble f…ing it all.
