Michael Jordan: Bobcats a ‘Destination’ for Free Agents

MJ, ever the salesman, says top free agents should seriously consider joining him in Charlotte. The Observer reports: “Michael Jordan tells Charlotte what it desperately wants to hear. ‘I like to think that we’re one of the teams that’s a destination,’ he says. Jordan, who owns the Charlotte Bobcats, is talking about being a destination for free agents. He is talking about free agents who perform CPR on franchises. He’s talking about stars who change everything. Jordan can’t talk about players by name, not when they are paid to play for another team. But North Carolina native Chris Paul, a star point guard for New Orleans, is the first to come to mind. Sign Paul and everybody says, Wow. Jordan is serious. If Charlotte’s young players develop and it drafts well – the Bobcats have two first-round picks – it could be slightly above average, next season. It could be all right. It could be pretty good. If the Bobcats add the right talent through free agency, they could be more. They could be exciting. And they will have money to invest. Will they? ‘I don’t want people to think we’re not willing to spend,’ says Jordan. ‘I want to spend money for a team that’s going to get us in the top four (in the Eastern Conference), the top three.’”

Actually, the Gold Club in the ATL is more of a destination for FA’s than Charlotte is. Sorry MJ. And, if they draft well? History isn’t on their side for that.

M.J.’s trying to create a self-fulfilling prophecy…but Charlotte ain’t poppin like Miami, NYC, Brooklyn, L.A. and even Dallas or Chi-town

  • RobbieJay

they might as well come to my house for a 5 on 5 and some chicken

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

im taking my talents to robbiejay’s house. permitting there actually is chicken.

  • J.C.

Just don’t see anyone willingly signing up to wear that uniform for a whole season…

Who wouldn’t want to live in North Carolina? It’s beautiful. Haven’t ya’ll been to the Outer Banks before? SMH

Before MJ goes chasing after big name free agents, he needs to work to get the community behind the franchise. Then he has to hire a smart GM and a coach who won’t be intimidated by him. Once those pieces are in place, he should take a step back & let his people do their work.

  • Wall Ball…

@Clyde and you own what franchise???

I kinda hope the Bobcats change that name, just doesn’t sound like a team you’d want to play for you know? Charlotte can’t count on FA unless it scores big in this draft. I want Barnes to end up there so badly…

As a Bobcats fan, I feel you Clyde and J.C.!!!

Sooner or later some idiots gonna start the mj/kobe debate. I implore u not 2day or ever again

  • k Dub

Yeah the future is not good in Charlotte they might have to build through the draft and via trades but D Rose MVP!!! Go Bulls!!

  • LeBron de Con

I’m better than mj and kobe. And my momma set you azz straight.

  • dahon

if they change thier team color to purple and gold.maybe CP3 would sign.

  • Ryan Smith

They need to draft Kyrie instead of signing CP3 and then throw a boat load of money at Dwight Howard. North Carolina is the best place to live. It has the best climate and your a good drive to the beach and a short drive to the mountains, youve got the best of both worlds. NC is home to a lot of halfbacks. A halfback is a person from up north that moves to florida because its to cold, then they move to North Carolina wich is half way back because its to hot in Florida. NC is the perfect place to settle!

Y not change the name to Team Jordan and bring Freaknic to NC.

  • tomtom

He’s completely right, Paul Silas is a respected coach and as a basketball player how do you refuse and offer from Michael Jordan!? Just the lure of being around him and possibly even learning from him would be too tempting for some. Also for players who are truly concerned with winning you know he is not going to be one of those owners who sits on his hands and allows a team to lose MJ is as competitive as the come and will demand success from his team.

  • MikeC.

I’m sure NC is beautiful, but the Bobcats’ future isn’t.

I like what MJ did with the roster though. The team was doomed to a 6-8 seed for the next couple years. I’d like to see the team just get a new identity. Change the team name (I like “Flight”) and colors. And I can see CP3 going home though (seems big on community)

Charlotte is the 17th largest city in America and the Hornets sold out in the 90s when they didnt suck. The city has all the potential to not be a small market team, and MJ can allure mid-level talent. I dont know if any star outside of Chris Paul or David West would want to come here, but money talks and the Bobcats are clearing up cap space/MJ will spend if he knows it will lead to wins.

    What about Kwame?

North Carolina sounds good if you like the outdoors. Sounds sort of like NZ.

With regards to CP3 going to Charlotte, what kind of sway would Mr Jordan have through his brand. I mean CP3 is decked in Jordan gear right? I know in Europe football (soccer) players can sometimes be pushed to play for teams with mutual sponsorship deals- rumours are thats how David “Adidas” Beckham ended up playing in the MLS.

Co-sign Betcats; even here in Australia the Charlotte Hornets were loved, the team just sounds awesome. Nothing wrong with the location, marketing needs a few tweaks though.

Bobcats need to win the lottery, just once, to break out of mediocrity.

  • MikeC.

Cats need to win the lottery in a draft that has franchise-transforming talent. This is not that year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Mars

I’d go. Im gonna go try out for the Bobcats. Name change to a plane/jet. North Carolina first in flight… But anyway if CP3 goes, I’d be the backup, which is fine for me. The best thing they did was got rid of Gerald Wallace, and his expensive contract. Add CP3, Steve Nash, Brook Lopez, and 2 solid draft picks. Im thinking. Derrick Williams if lottery, and JuJuan Johnson, Josh Selby late. @rYAN sMITH they’re called snowbirds.

Charlotte only needs a big man/SF of good quality and they will be ok but C should be their priority
