Nate McMillan Unhappy With Refereeing in Game 1

In last night’s Mavs-Blazers contest, Dallas got to the line 29 times, while Portland only took 13 freebies (and the fourth quarter difference was 19-2). In The Oregonian, McMillan talks about his confusion: “McMillan was fuming after the game at the discrepancy in free throws between the Blazers and Mavericks, particularly in the deciding fourth quarter. ‘The free throws, I just don’t get that,’ McMillan said. ‘It’s hard for our guys to know how to play out there when it’s called a little different. (The free throw difference was) 19-2 in the fourth quarter. And I felt like we were attacking and guys really didn’t know how to play with the fouls that we’re being called.’ The Mavericks attempted 29 free throws in the game, including 19 in the fourth quarter. The Blazers attempted 13 in the game, including just two in the pivotal fourth. ‘A lot of touch fouls and I thought that (gave them) momentum and pretty much gave them control of the game in the fourth quarter,’ McMillan said. ‘This game was pretty much decided at the line in the fourth quarter.’”

Nate McMillan was always a class act. Ever since his playing days as a Seattle Supersonic.
Taking a young and brash Gary Payton under his wing and showing him the ropes.
Big point guard with savvy and great court sense.
    Was a very good defender.
    Couldn’t shoot…
Bad knees (bone on bone)ended his career a little early, some would say.

Stop crying, your guys couldn’t buy a jumpshot to save their lives in the 4th and that’s why y’all lost. As much as I want Por to beat Dal for them to play LA in the second round, I doubt it.

The reason you didn’t get to the line was because you we’re so jump shot happy while Dallas took it to the paint. Don’t blame the refs because your gameplan didn’t work. Tyson Chandler is the reason you didn’t get so many free throws. You were too scared to take it in the paint.

Hey nate maybe you shouldn’t play Brandon Roy so much…

Yeah, refs made your 2 SG’s shoot so badly all game long too, hmm? Dirk drove repeatedly and got clobbered. So i guess those were ticky tacky touch fouls too.
Way to pull a Phil Jax there, Nate.

Nate may have a valid argument, but he better get inline behind DCollins…

Brandon Roy needs to step up ASAP!!!

It’s funny how the Mavs got the benefit of the calls seeing how they were the confused ones in 2006.

The reason that Dallas got the calls was that Dirk and Terry were takin’ to the hole. Fouls are easier to see and will go to the aggressor. Dirk is quick for a big man and if he drives instead of taking a mid-range jump shot he is going to get the calls. It you don’t stop his first step he has a quickness advantage over bigs and a size advantage over 2-3s. You can whine or you can push him out to 20-22 and jam his first step.

    @manny: NBE!

I TOLD YOU! The f*cking refs let Dallas win that. In the fourth quarter they called about three or four shooting fouls for Dirk IN A ROW, just so Dallas could come back. F*cking bullsh!t…
29 FTs to 13 is an absolute JOKE, I don’t care how “aggressive” the Mavs were playing, you don’t shoot 16 more free throws than the opposition without some strings being pulled.
The refs are ruining what has otherwise been an insanely good start to the playoffs right now.

To be fair, the refs pulled an even worse offense in that Chicago-Pacers game. 31 Chicago FTs to 17 Indiana FTs? And Rose had 21 by himself? WTH.

I’m not saying Nate is right about his team not getting calls–the refs were letting the play get pretty physical, which is how it should be. You won’t find me complaining there. What bugs me is that in the fourth quarter, ALL OF A SUDDEN they start calling the tiniest touch fouls on Portland. Whenever a Blazer so much as took a swipe at the ball it was a freaking foul!
