Post Up: Mr. Solo Dolo

Carmelo gets little assistance as the Celts go up 2-0.

Boston 96, New York 93

Rajon Rondo, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett, Jared Jeffries. One of these names is not like the others. That reality became blatantly clear for the Knicks as Jefferies turned the ball over to Garnett with just seconds remaining to send the Knicks to a 96-93 loss to the Celtics. The other names lived up to their billing as Rondo (30 points, 7 assists and all-out mastery of transition game) and ‘Melo (42 points, 17 boards and countless jaw dropping shots down the stretch) battled throughout this one.

Jeffries—aka Fool’s Gold—had just come up big with a drive to put New York up one with 19 seconds left. The second time around, KG closed out hard on Jefferies and basically punked him into giving up the steal. KG’s big play came on the heels of his turnaround hook over that put Boston up for good.

As much as KG and Jefferies may have stolen the headlines, this was Carmelo Anthony’s game. Melo put New York on his back with the type of performance that DVRs are made for. Each drive and jumper further silenced those who thought that giving up Mozgov was too steep a price. Simply unstoppable, Melo stepped up for an injured Amar’e and practically willed the Knicks across the finish line. But in the end ,with that line approaching, Melo passed off the chance for the game-winner with the aforementioned feed to Jefferies. With Big Baby blitzing his way, the pass out of the double team was arguably the prudent choice. But given his white-hot performance, it is sure to leave Knicks fans thinking, What if? —Jonathan Evans (@jre18)

Orlando 88, Atlanta 82

It wasn’t the prettiest game, but the Magic evened up the series behind a solid defensive effort and another dominant performance from Dwight Howard. “We played extremely hard. Especially from the time we were down 10 in the first half, I just thought we played with unbelievable intensity…when you can shoot 34 percent in a playoff game and win it, I gotta be very, very proud of our guys and just hope that at some point some guys will start making some shots,” said Magic coach Stan Van Gundy in the postgame press conference.

One day after accepting his third straight Defensive Player of the Year award, Howard exploded for 33 points (9/12 FG, 15/19 FT) and 19 rebounds. “What Dwight did tonight was phenomenal. I didn’t give him much rest in the game,” said Van Gundy, referencing the 48 minutes Howard logged.

Howard’s first half production this series would stand as excellent complete games for the majority of the League. After setting a franchise record with 31 pts in the first half of Game 1, Howard tallied 24 pts and 11 rebounds in the opening two quarters of Game 2.

Al Horford played only two minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls. Despite being outrebounded 32-15 and outscored 28-14 in the paint during the first two quarters, the Hawks kept it close and ended the half down 6. Down 11 to start the fourth, Atlanta closed the gap to four with 25 seconds to play before Orlando hit free throws to ice the game. Jamal Crawford scored a playoff career-high 25 points for a Hawks offense that settled for difficult shots most of the game.

Game 3 is Friday in Atlanta and Howard is lucky he has two days to rest. —Tracy Weissenberg

Dallas 101, Portland 89

The big news before Game 2 between No. 3 Dallas Mavericks and No. 6 Portland Trail Blazers was the fact that referee Danny Crawford would be officiating. Before the game, the Mavs had a 2-16 record in playoffs games called by Crawford, including 16 L’s in the last 17 contests. Naturally, with an outspoken owner like Mark Cuban, the media were all over that juicy little nugget like stink on a monkey. Cuban, for his part, didn’t bite and let the chips, and whistles, fall as they may.

Turns out, Crawford wasn’t a factor at all, and neither were the Blazers in the end, as Dallas took a 2-0 series lead over Portland with a 101-89 win on their home court.

Just like he did in Game 1, Jason Kidd caught fire from behind the arc, nailing three J’s from long range on the way to 18 points. Kidd’s scoring output is significant, considering his total points during the regular season vs. Portland was 20. In just the first two games of this series, he has 42 points total.

Dirk Nowitzki was his usual MVP-like self, putting on a show before his dad, Jorge, who was on hand to watch his son drop 33 points, including 14 in the final quarter, on 9-22 shooting from the field.

The big story, though, was Peja Stojakovic, who racked up 21 points off the pine on 5-10 shooting from three-point land and JJ Barea, who Mighty Mouse’d his way to six points, four assists and some key defensive possessions.

LaMarcus Aldridge led the way for the Blazers with 24 points and 10 boards, while Gerald Wallace added 18 points.  As the series goes back to Portland, Nate McMillan looks to right the ship and take advantage of the home crowd’s energy. Analysts gave the Blazers the edge before this series began, citing the Mavs’ penchant for only looking good on paper in the post-season, but if the first two games are any indication, Portland has its hands full if they want to make sure Dallas doesn’t finally leap off the “page.” —Maurice Bobb (@ReeseReport)

I’m seeing 3.0 blocks per and 2.3 steals per against Chicago, but close enough.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I actually did the stats, 2 steals and 3 blocks in game 1. 4 steals and 3 blocks in game 2. 2 steals and 4 blocks in game 3.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

nbk, I see 1 steal and 2 blocks for game 1.
I’m getting my stats from Basketball-Reference, you?
@Showtime – Best player on best team in regular season, which beat every team at least once, top 10 in points per and sssists per, one of only four players to ever get more than 2,000 points and 600 assists, team went 19-5 since January against playoff teams.
Not sure what there is to argue about, unless you wanna start talking that Hollinger efficiency bullsh*t.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Matic, my fault I grabbed the steals and blocks from the Detroit game 1 game up. (but yeah, i use basketball-reference too.) my bad, still though, with all them healthy (mainly Boozer apparently) he had 4 blocks. Should be a great series if they can get passed atlanta, which is questionable.

  • bull22

i guess iam not only bulls fans that thinks they can win it this year…. so one took it step further! http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/pippen-bulls-line-seventh-championship.html
    GO BULLS!! CHICAGO!

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Dirk will forever be underrated.

  • bull22

@tealish, very great player who is committed to the dallas organization… when he finishes his career, his opinion will be respected like charles barkleys, maybe they will be on same show together.. but definitely best power forward in game right now..

  • Feez22

Funny how carmelo got praised for a loss the other night. Lebron got hatred for being swept in the finals with a rookie daniel gibson as his TRUE second option. I seriously hate the mass media seriously… agenda pushers. Now people are so pleased that melo ALMOST did it on his own… like its never been done before. The media is smart for reeling in NY fans by doing this.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

And Melo played great all game, till the very end. Way to give up. What the hell was that.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Yeah, I think Orlando/Chicago would be a better series than Atlanta/Chicago.
I just think Chicago matches up better with Atlanta. Even though ATL beat them once, Chicago has mostly had their way with them. It would be fun to see Hinrich D up Rose some more though. Still a big Hinrich fan. Always will be.
Orlando, on the other hand, the past couple of seasons probably only the LeBron-led Cavs had given the Bulls more problems than the Magic. And while Chicago has shown no fear of them this year, that last game without Howard playing for them was too close for comfort.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I just like the idea of Rose and Howard meeting at the hoop, over and over and over again. Battle of MVP 1 v MVP 2. Also the Jameer Nelson v Derrick Rose battle is going to be one hell of an offensive affair if it happens (I hope atleast) – I don’t see atlanta winning more then a game or two against Chicago, and Carlos Boozer for the first time in his playoff career will be the difference.

  • Feez22

@tealish it has been well documented that melo’s moping gets to him with the game being concerned. Look no further than his 1st round exit against utah last yr where he basically technical fouled his way out of the series. Of course the rest of his teammates followed his lead and started complaining as well. well, maybe i shouldn’t blame that on him. Carmelo has never been a true “leader” in the nba to begin with. Now knick fans will digress and disagree with me. I however have watched him since syracuse. Melo is a roamer/freestyler on OFFENSE and DEFENSE… i don’t know why people haven’t seen this yet. I think he is a fantastic rebounder though for his size though. His jumper is top knotch (esp mid range) and his clutch factor is the best in the NBA. However when you talk about intangibles im sorry but melo does NOT have them. If melo isn’t scoring he will dissapear out of games. Its that simple.

    Enig 1:19 LMAO. LMFAO

  • Feez22

Oh ya & skip bayless said carmelo’s performance last night was better than lebron’s game 5 in detroit… the media is just horrendous.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Either LakeShow really disagrees with me or he enjoys laughing his f*cking ass off.

  • bashmo

Ha! And people thought the Blazers would upset the Mavs, get outta here wit that, Mavs in 5 son.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

@ Feez22: Not all Knick fans were/are high on Melo like that. I’ve personally been on record on this site since before the trade, criticizing him as a capable but lazy guy due to his lack of conditioning and desire to play defense. I’ve also stated that he’s a clutch shooter, but pretty self-centered so I’m not sure where your generalized statements about Knicks fans being in love with come from. Last night he put up a great effort. Nothing wrong with giving credit where credit is due. He’s not the only player in the league whose body language coveys frustration. Kobe and Lebron are no different from Melo in that department.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Skip Bayless knows absolutely nothing about basketball. nothing

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Enig it’s 4/20. I’m LMFA off all the damn day long. But seriously Unf*ckwitable is the funniest sh*t ever.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Apparently Chad Ford and Bryan Crawford have been drinking from the same bowl of punch. He said if Indiana had a true go-to scorer they would be title contenders. LOL

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

If Indiana had a true go-to scorer, they’d be a legitimate threat in the East to win a series.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

for those comparing Lebrons cavs team to the Knicks team of last night… just stop. The cavs team was cleverly built around Lebron and gave him solid rebounders, shot makers, and veterans. Bill Walker, Jared JEffries and Anthony Carter don’t fit that description AT ALL… on most teams they would be 3rd string, probably even innactive

  • JTaylor21

AllBall, I just saw the same thing. I can’t believe that someone would argue that what Melo did in a first round game is more impressive than what Bron did in that ECF Gm5.
Till this day, I haven’t seen anyone take over a game like he did on that night and I still remember watching that game in total shock.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Bayless also said Melo is a better player then LeBron like 3 weeks ago. – He is however a football guy, and he called Tim Tebow the next Brett Favre so maybe he just knows nothing period.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Y’all trippin. I been saying “unf*ckwitable” for years on here! LOL
    Anyways, even if I was a weed head I wouldn’t celebrate 4/20.
    Hitler’s birthday.
    Columbine shootings.
    Not a day of celebration.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

Indiana better hold on to that Vogel dude though.
    Dude’s promising.

  • http://mheat BIG3KG

heh great game by melo but he ballhoged as HELL!c mon 42pts and under 50% thats a ball hog!

  • tRay

First off Melo was like Baby Jordan out there lol he made the right play to me Jeffries just got punked. KG came through on both ends of the floor. The Knicks have been playing pretty good defense as a whole except for Toney Douglas just letting Rondo have his way. D12 should at least get a mention for MVP because he has been tearing it up.

  • http://mheat BIG3KG

what melo game beter then lebron game5in 2007 esf he is tripin?first they lost and lebron scored last 29 of 30!! pts so somebody kick his but(skips biased ass)

  • D12FSU

Im glad other people saw that skip bayless thing today….What a @ss. He doesnt have any idea what hes talking about, not just with the Lebron game, but everything basketball. When Chris Broussard was yelling at him, you could sense that it wasnt just from the debate of the 2 games…it was years of frustration venting out at that prick. I dont even know how he has a job, he cant have good approval ratings, can he?

Sneakerwatch: Rondo was wearing white ZKVI’s again yesterday. SMH. Also, it seems Paul Pierce and Jeff Green have adopted his “bright-green-shoe-with-white-home-unis” look.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    what’s your @ man?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Jeffries easily could have made the game-winning lay-up but instead decided to pass it off. That’s why he lost the ball.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ zoom: Melo is the reason the Knicks were even in the game last night. And he’s definitely not “poorly conditioned.”

  • http://slamonline.com Eboy

T-baby’s new joint comes out soon. Wait for that to drop this june. After the Heat beat the Lakers in 7, I’m having a celebration/release party for it.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

@Teddy-the-Bear: I agree that he carried them last night, but if he isn’t poorly conditioned then what exactly is the reason he chooses not to play defense most nights? It takes a lot of stamina and conditioning to play both ends. He’s a decent defender when he wants to be, so we all know he’s capable. If his conditioning isn’t the problem then he’s beyond lazy.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he should have fouled quicker that’s for sure. Looked pretty lazy, and dumb at the end of regulation last night. If that happened in even a high school game the coach would flip the f*ck out.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

nbk, can’t remember Dark’s user name right now but I’ll let you know when I can use my cell phone.
Twitter’s fun but on weekdays I can only get on it for like 4 hours in the evening, too busy any other time (unlike Slam, I can’t access Twitter @ work).
Plus besides Slam, Eboy, you, and BC, only other people who follow me are them fake a** profiles. Ha.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah only person following me for like the first 6 months I had twitter was my girlfriend lol – but I enjoy twitter now a lot more then I used to, quick easy form of communication. Also I get all my tweets straight to my phone as texts, so i see it all day.
