Post Up: The Neal Factor

Nuggets, Sixers go home. Spurs still dancin’.

Miami 97, Philadelphia 91

For the fourth time in five games, the Sixers jumped out to an early double-digit lead. And for the fourth time in the five games, the Heat defeated the Sixers. Philadelphia clearly frustrated Miami throughout the game, but 64 points from Miami’s Big Three and a surprising 20 from Mario Chalmers were enough for the W.

The Sixers made it interesting late, as they cut their deficit to 1 with less than 20 seconds remaining. But not only did Joel Anthony bring along his usual energy and intensity, he also sank two huge free throws to put Miami up three with 16.8 seconds left in regulation. The Sixers couldn’t get any closer, as an Iguodala jumper bricked off the iron with 10 seconds on the clock.

Dwyane Wade stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. LeBron James nearly had a triple-double with 16-10-8. Chris Bosh supplied a double-double with 22 and 11 rebounds.

Iguodala saved his best game of the series for last, as he chipped in 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 dimes. Sixers’ fans can only wonder if this series could have gone longer if Iguodala brought similar performances in the first three games. Elton Brand carried Philly at times as he added 22 points and 6 rebounds.

Heat coach, Erik Spoelstra, has clearly had enough with Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mike Bibby as both players played less than 5 minutes each. For a championship contender, late April is not the best time to be figuring out the rotation. The Heat now move on to the Eastern Conference Semifinals to face the Boston Celtics. For the Sixers, an intriguing offseason awaits.—Cris Jones

Spurs 110, Grizzlies 103 (OT)

Gary Neal! Gary Neal! Gary Neal! Sorry, I just wanted to fit in with the River Walk crowd. They’re already erecting the statue outside of AT&T Center, right? I don’t blame them.

The Spurs were dead. Done. End of an Era Bandwagon standing room only done. Then Neal hit that shot, that gloriously serrated dagger, and everything changed.

Suddenly the Grizzlies’ momentum doesn’t seem so daunting. Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol are obstacles, not impossibilities. Sam Young is on his way back to Earth. Mike Conley is no longer indefatigably obnoxious (just regular obnoxious).

The Grizzlies are mortal again.

San Antonio is still two wins away from survival, but after Neal’s shot anything is possible.

Coming back from 3-1 to win a series rarely happens. Then again, when’s the last time you saw an undrafted, 26-year-old rookie hit a fallaway three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in the biggest game of his life?

That’s Hollywood stuff, but when it’s real, it makes you believe.

So throw out Memphis’ advantage inside. Throw out their waves upon waves of double digit scorers. Throw out Conley inexplicably outplaying Tony Parker. This series belongs to San Antonio again.

They’re old, injured and, let’s face it, more than a little overmatched, but the Spurs have “it” now. That thing that happens when you hit a Gary Neal shot. Momentum.

As unlikely as it sounds, they’re going to come back and win this series. Two straight wins, guaranteed.

I’m so confident, I’d bet Timmy D’s bank shot on it. Or Manu’s remaining hair.

Hell, I’ll even stake the River Walk. -- Patrick Crawley / @BasketballFiend

Denver 97, Oklahoma City 100

Kevin Durant’s final 5:31 went a little something like this: 14-footer, 25-footer, 12-footer, 15-footer, 5-footer plus free throw, two more free throws, and then a 19-footer with 12 seconds left. In total, he scored 16 of Oklahoma City’s final 20, outscored the Nuggets by six over that stretch, finished with 41 and single-handedly created one of those this series ends here sequences reserved only for the game’s unmerciful closers.

With the Thunder down 9 and just over four minutes left, the series appeared to be fulfilling its destiny as a lengthy one, with a Game 6 beckoning and the Nuggets scratching together some long overdue momentum. Durant simply took over from there and OKC emerged with its first series victory since relocation.

For the record, Durant went 14-27 from the field to get his second 40-point effort of the series, especially encouraging considering his struggles in Denver. Russell Westbrook, fresh off the firestorm that was the reaction to his 30-shot game, went just 3-15 for his 14 points. Kendrick Perkins showed life on the offensive end to get 11.

Denver placed five players in double figures, led by Arron Afflalo’s 15.

Thus ends an interesting season for the Nuggets: once marred by rumor, enduring a trade that saw them farewell its two best players, before finding cohesion and balance post-trade with a group of very sound talent and depth. They have little to be ashamed of; outside of Game 2 their losing margins were 4, 3 and 3. They were right there.

Durant caps his first true defining moment with a trip to the second round, awaiting the result of San Antonio-Memphis. Like his team, he’ll be far from satisfied. –Todd Spehr

Neal breakin hearts in Memphis and La La Land. lol

  • http://Twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

    That shot was bananas.

  • http://google c_cantrell

Hell of a clutch shot from Neal. And hells yeah to the Thunder! Denver got Thunderstruck baby! Now its on to the 2nd round!

  • Bruno

breaking hearts in LA LA Land???

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

    Gary Neal is the realist..

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

Essentially the Nuggets and Knicks lost because they were missing what they gave up. since amare and billups got injured, the Knicks missed the depth they used to have, while the Nuggets simply couldn’t close out the games, something they could have easily done if they still had Melo and Chauncey

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

    Durant gets buckets… Point…Blank…Period….

  • Riggs

Man to be honest, westbrook almost cost them the game again. I don’t know what’s going on but there were times where he didn’t even look at durant.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Bruno: the Lakers are the 2 seed in the West…of course you would want the 1 seed in the West to get bumped off if you’re a Lakers fan. Right? Of course!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Cosign Riggs. One these next games Westbrook will cost OKC a game with his end game shot selection. 1 on 4 semi fast break and he pulls up in traffic. Really?

  • Bruno

the way the spurs are playing, LA’s probably more scared of Memphis but the real concern must be Oklahoma who’s beating either both teams in the next round

  • T-Money

Boston-Miami. At last. / I thought the Grizzlies defended Neal’s shot very poorly. You can’t let a guy shoot in rythmn like that. / KD was on fire, I was actually expecting the jumpers to go down. However, he can still be muscled out of position on the perimeter. Look for the Grizz to be extra physical on him with Battier, TA, Sam Young.

  • Fat Lever

I love the make-up of this Sixer team. No quit and a huge heart. They might not have the talent as some top teams, but they won’t be out-worked and out-hustled. I wasn’t on board with the Collins hire initially, but he is the exact coach this young team needed. And watch out for Jrue Tha Damaja. It’s going to be fun watching him grow.

  • Brahsef

The ending of regulation of the Spurs and Griz is why the NBA is so great. Everyone just kept making shots. One of the best played endings of a game I’ve ever seen, on both sides.

  • QQQQQ!

    Thank you Based Neal!

  • HAMMER

Still don’t know what to make of the Thunder. Yeah, there good. But all 5 games the Nuggs were right there w/them. All games could have gone either way. Now, did the Nuggs overachieve by hanging w/them? To a certain degree maybe. But if the Thnder r supposedly an “elite team”, they should have dominated Denver. With the Lakers not playing their best and Spurs struggling as well, the Thunder might just get lucky enuff to reach the Finals

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

that spurs game was bananas, i was so hyped when neal hit that shot – but the spurs we’re actually pretty chill about it, go figure haha.
if there’s any team to come back from 3-1, i think its the spurs, well and probably orlando.
boston/miami is gonna be a slugfest, cant wait.

  • larrylegend

why not foul when u 3 up!?!?!?!? maybe it ain’t pretty, but the spurs would be fishin by now. damn.

  • HAMMER

@Fat Lever. “I’ve accumulated honeys all across the map. Cuz i’d rather bust a nut than (than, than) bust a cap.” Dope. Anyways, coach Collins has a track record of improving teams his 1st yr. That’s what he does. The real test comes in the next couple yrs. That’s when we’ll c if he is in fact the best coach for the 6ers

Do any of you guys live in Oklahoma? I gotta basketball tourney coming up the 28th of next month and could use a couple more players. Good players that is.

  • JTaylor21

I’m still not sure about MIA’s ability to beat Bos in a 7gm series especially if they trot out the same weak starting lineup in GM1. There’s no way they can beat BOS if they carry over the slow 1st starts from the sixers series because BOS isn’t as willing to relinquish leads like the sixers were.
Also Wade shouldn’t have to spend the entire series chasing Ray Allen through screens because they need him on the offensive end. MIA should go the same route LA does whenever they play BOS which is to have KB on Rondo and fisher on Ray, it allows KB to save his legs on D. It would beehove MIA to implement the same gameplan.
The key to beating BOS is to run PP/Ray off the 3pt line, force Rondo to become a scorer and match their BOS physicality.

  • bull22

DENVER-WELCOME. PHILADELPHIA-WELCOME. INDIANA-WELCOME. to CARMELOS’s hudson fishing losers club. lets get our fishing rods on…… HEY YA LALA, i love the camera baby! hahahahhahahhahahah

  • Mike From Spain

in hindsight it’d been better to foul, but what do you know, do you think that they’ll hit that shot before it happens?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Stepfan

By Russell Westbrook body language you would have thought that OKC lost the game….smh He’s bothered by the fact that KD is Batman and he is Robin. Stop playing hero ball Russell. There was a point where Westbrook had the ball and you could just tell he wanted to shoot the ball. If he would have gave up the ball in Denver the series wouldn’t have gone back to OKC. Even thought they are fun to watch they got to tighten up their defense and late game execution; well maybe not just give the ball to KD. Eff Gary Neal. Heck of a shot but eff him. Z-BO did work last night. Oh and eff Shane Battier. Why in the world would you chase Tim Duncan. He ain’t going to hurt you from three.

  • axel

Westbrook is a ballhog..and that’s why OKC is not getting past Spurs or Grizzlies which are two very good defensive teams at the point guard position.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

If Boston wins game 1, they’ll win the series. Fair? I’m not a dreamer….haven’t been all season. If the Heat can hold serve in Game’s 1 & 2….they’ll win this series. If they split….it will go 7 and I’d like Boston’s chances in a Game 7 just due to their continuity. But….(there’s always a but)don’t sell short the Heat having Haslem play and Miller being back in the rotation. They kept these guys out of the Philly series by design. They WILL be involved in the Boston series.

  • paul

Perkins needs to keep picking up his play like he did last night for OKC. And what is wrong with Westbrook? It really seems like he doesn’t particularly like to give the ball up to Durant. Someone needs to get through to that kid. He’ll ruin the Thunders’ chance to go far if he doesn’t start appreciating the great shooter he has at the end of his passes. Russell, just imagine what Rondo would do with a Durant to pass to! He’d have 20 assists a game. Now you do that. You and Durant can build a legend. Or you can be a ball hog, not exactly classic point guard mentality…

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    Interesting statistic of the day – Chris Paul’s averages in his three “sub-par games” this post-season; 20.6 PPG, 9.6 APG, 3.6 RPG, 1 SPG, 3.3 TPG, 55% FGS, 40% 3PS, 72% FTS.
    Derrick Rose averages over entire post-season; 27.6 PPG, 6.2 APG, 4.6 RPG, 2.6 SPG, 1.2 BPG, 3.8 TPG, 37% FGS, 22% 3PS, 87% FTS.
Now, Chris Paul’s sub-par games statistics are better in a lot of ways than Rose’ over all statistics. Therefore, Derrick Rose should not be in any “best player of post season” conversation.
I understand that the Bulls have already advanced, but they are a 1 seed playing an 8 seed, where as the Hornets are a 7 seed with out their second best player, going toe to toe with the defending champions.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Before last night I thought Russell Westbrook was just overly aggressive and very confident.
Now I think he is probably a chucker.
This is a sad day for me. I don’t think Durant can co-exist with a chucker. Which means, unless Westbrook gets his mind right this duo is slated for divorce.
And I think Memphis can beat OKC. I feel pretty good about their chances if they advance. Not so sure about the Spurs if they somehow get a miracle, but they will have an easier time against OKC then they did against Memphis because the Grizzlies run an actual offense.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Stepfan

You really want to have that conversation again All Ball? Man, we need to have a separate area where you can debate Player X vs. Player Y kind of like some hip hop websites.
Oh yeah, how do the Grizzlies go like four or five possessions down the stretch without getting ZBo the damn ball! That is inexcusable. Turrible.

  • thawindy

If/when the spurs loose…where does it rank amongst biggest upset in nba history? They came so close to going on vacation. I knew Memphis didn’t stand a chance in OT.

  • T-Money

E: Yes, Winderman has been hinting at that for the past few days. Miller and Haslem will both be available for Game 1. That’s huge. Chris Bosh is more productive when he plays 35-36 minutes. 40+ is too much for him. / I’d stick Wade on Rondo all game long. He’s more engaged when he has to defend on the ball and, quite frankly, he sucks at chasing guys. Wade will be key in this series. / Unfortunately, James Jones is about to get caught in a numbers game.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’m not concerned if Spo plays the rotations right. That makes me concerned.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Gary Neal’s shot, nice as it was, straightforward three, nice. Huge, truly. But Manu’s recovery of a fumbled ball, spin towards the baseline then nail a fading jumper (nearly a 3 to tie the game too) over Gasol was bananas!
And he had TA on skates most of the game.
Guess his elbow’s not falling off anytime soon, eh Mr. Allen?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    AllBall, we off that.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

It’s a given that Doc Rivers is going to win the coaching matchup.
So, Bron and WAde are going to have win the effort matchup. No chilling early. No stupid mistakes. Afterburners must be engaged.
The question is can Chris Bosh continue his great play and can Chalmers and Anthony continue to be stellar role players. Also, is Shaq playing? Without Shaq, the Heat will have a much easier time matching up.

  • JTaylor21

I find it hysterical that people are quick to label Westbrook a chucker and the next Starbury but when I said the same thing about a certain soon to be MVP, I was damn near skinned alive.
Also KD didn’t even receive half the criticism Westbrook has the past few days when he was throwing up brick after brick during their 1st round series vs LA but all of a sudden now because he has a favorable matchup vs the Nuggets and Russ has a few bad games, KD is a god and Westbrook is a bum. Talk about being prisoners of the moment.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@AllBall: Rose is getting some of those MVP type calls averaging 12 FTA a game in the playoffs second to only Dwight Howard (15.2). Out of those 12 FTA, Rose is making 10.4 of them a game in the playoffs. Rose averages 17.2 PPG on 37% from the field sans the charity stripe. His FG% would likely be even lower if he didn’t get such a friendly whistle. In the end, I hope I’m not coming off like a Rose hater, because I’m not. I think the Rose a great great player, who’s very humble, and he’ll only get better as he gets more seasoned.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

rose has a far better shot selection than westbrook. in this first round, i’ve already seen westbrook jump in the air and get caught up numerous times which forces him to either make a bad pass or something stupid like throw it off his defender.
    lets not do this.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Lets keep it real, Spurs will lose and Memphis will beat these overrated Thunder wananbes. I cannot stand Kevin Durant. Everybody is giving him credit for getting at Westbrook on ESPN first take and other shows, because he hit some big shots last night. BUT what I saw was Westbrook become scared to shoot, in thinking he might get called out by KD again or the media will jump down his neck. IF I was KD I would want Westbrook constantly attacking and if every now and then he shoots 30 shots so be it. KD shoots 30 shots, 80% of the regular season. I feel Westbrook is getting disrespected in OKC and I hope he demands a trade, so the GREAT Kevin “Chucker” Durant can look for a great point guard again. I am happy as a Laker fan, because I saw Westbrook look like the shell of himself, Thanks KD for trying to be a leader, because you wanted to shoot more shots than Westbrook and be the HERO. People forget easily, but Westbrook was the best player for OKC last year versus the defending champion Lakers and KD lost the series. Just saying…………..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jtaylor
I have never, EVER seen Rose take shots like Westbrook was taking. EVER.
Son just doesn’t do it. He doesn’t no run down against the opposing teams defense and jack up a random long jumper. He doesn’t careen wildly to the rim and blast into opposing players.
Now, Rose does over dribble at time. He can force shots. But he rarely just comes down and does something where you say “WTH!” If you refuse to acknowledge that reality, there really isn’t much to discuss.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I agree with Allen. Russell Westbrook is in NO WAY trying to defer to Kevin Durant. He’s going for his. A divorce is definitely on the horizon. This is like KG and Steph in Minnesota except without all the drama.

  • JTaylor21

AllenP, fair point but what all of a sudden makes Westbrook a chucker and Rose not? Isn’t the definition of a chucker someone that takes more shots than they need to?
In the RS, Rose took 20 shots a game while Westbrook hovered around 17-18 and in their 1st round series vs the Pacers/Nuggets, Rose took 105 while Russ took 101. You could say that Westbrook is a bad-shot taker while Rose isn’t but both guys are chuckers for their position.
You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Grizzlies lost in SA in OT on a ridiculous shot. They’ve got the series in their home game, Spurs are done still, one shot won’t change that.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

A chucker is someone who “selfishly,” takes more shots than they need to. Big difference.

  • T-Money

JTaylor: Westbrook has the league leading scorer on his team. As a point guard, how can you take more shots than the best scorer in the league for the last two years? That’s insane. Also, qualitatively, some of the shots Westbrook has taken lately have been truly been WTF. I’ve been saying that for a while now (way before the playoffs) but Wesbrook plays in crunch time like he’s OKC’s first option and he’s just not. Rose is. Big difference.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

who on the bulls other than rose should be putting up that many shots? okay.
now who on the thunder other than westbrook should be putting up that many shots?
    okay.

  • T-Money

For the record, I also think that Rose takes too many shots. His pull up 3s could be redistributed among his teammates, IMO. It’ll be very difficult for Chicago to generate offense against better teams in a 7-game series because they have the most predictable crunch time offense in the NBA right now. You know exactly what and from whom it’s coming from.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Your own definition did you in JTaylor.
How have you decided Rose took more shots than he needed to? Who is he supposed to be deferring to right now? Boozer? Noah? Deng? Korver?
That is the point everybody has made and it deserves to be made again. Russell Westbrook plays with Kevin Durant. And for all his flaws, and yes Durant does have flaws, he still gets buckets as well as almost anybody in the league. Nobody on Denver could come close to guarding him. Therefore, he needs the freaking ball, frequently. Westbrook should be getting his off Durant, not going for his and letting Durant follow.
But, it’s not just Durant. It’s Harden, hell it’s evne Ibaka. Westbrook is looking off cats who want the rock, while Rose is taking shots his own teammates are begging him to take.
Rose shoots a lot. He’s not a chucker. I’ve made that distinction before. And I didn’t consider Westbrook a chucker until recently. He is has greatly increased his ridiculous shot total. Previously he was good for 3-4 a game. Now he’s taking at least six ridiculous shots.

  • T-Money

E: I have a question for you, as a local. Why does Ira Winderman hate Rio so much (and love Arroyo so much)? It’s kinda weird. In his mailbag this morning he said that Rio’s two assists performance should not be overstated. What about the 6 freaking 3s he hit?!

  • JTaylor21

T-Money, Westbrook has taken 1100+ and 1300+ shots the past two years while KD has taken 1600+ and 1500+ shots during the same period, so where the hell did you get the idea that Russ has taken more shots than the L’s leading scorer?
Also who other than KD and Westbrook should be taking shots on a consistent basis for OKC? No one that’s why Russ takes the second most on the team. It’s the same scenario in MIA with Bron/Wade, same with the early 2000 Lakers with Shaq/Kobe and same with any team that has ever had two great players.
The guy has two bad guys and y’all are ready to crown him the ultimate ball-hog.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

T-Money, as we’ve seen countless times over the years, I doesn’t matter that the other team knows who’s going to get the ball or take the shot, what matters is can you stop it.
With Rose this year, the answer has consistently been “NO.”

  • cuseburg

Those that are going after Westbrook super hard are trippin. Has he had a bad couple of games where his shot selection could have been better? Of course. But it seems like people have suddenly forgotten that he’s been a beast all season, including down the stretch in a lot of games(the celtics game is one). Durant should probably generally get more shots, especially when he’s on fire like last night, but this crap about who should be the closer and westbrook needs to always defer is complete media bs drama. He needs to continue to be an aggressive, attacking, scoring guard because that’s who he is. He’s not Rondo, so why would you want him to try and play like Rondo? Kid will be fine.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

@T-Money – in late game situations you need to keep a guy on Rose, Korver, and Deng. You can’t help off of either of those guys. Which means you’re relying on a big, dumb center or power forward to make the right basketball play and to be fast enough to recover on his man if needed. I’ll take those chances, especially with Noah and Boozer in the game, who are good enough to capitalize on any missteps like that.

  • T-Money

BC: Nah, it does matter. Great defenses can take that away. Even the Lakers mix it up in crunch time – Kobe takes the bulk of the shots but the sets vary and he attacks from different angles. Also, Pau gets touches on the block in crunch time. Thibs has completely abandoned his playbook. The Bulls basically do not run anything anymore.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think Harden can score. Ibaka can hit jumpers, and his athletic rolling to the basket.
But, I do respect that Westbrook has to take some bad shots because the Thunder don’t run a real offense. My problem is the quick shots in semi-transition with nobody in rebounding position and the horrible three pointers. He doesn’t need either of those shots.
Yes, he should push the pace, but he has to understand when to shoot and when to pull it back and move the ball around.
And Brooks needs to run some damn sets.

  • JTaylor21

AllenP, so now Westbrook should stand in the corner waiting for KD to create shots for him?
I mean come on son, when did KD inherit the ability to create good looks for his teammates?
KD is strictly a scorer, he’s not a passer or a great all-around player in the LBird mode. That’s like asking the Iceman or BKing to create looks for others, that’s not what they do. KD’s role in life is to put the ball in the basket not create shots for Westbrook.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

@jtaylor, doesn’t it say something then when westbrook is putting up slightly more shots than rose AND has durant there?
AND by your definition wouldn’t durant be even more of a “chucker” than rose?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    slightly less*

  • T-Money

Diesel: why does the big man have to be dumb lol? That’s so random. All the good teams have big mean that can make the read and recover to his man. Pau, LO, KG, Bosh, Joel Anthony (the only reason why he’s in the league), Dwight. Indiana had success showing hard on Rose to make him get rid of the ball. You can’t leave Deng open in the corner but teams will encourage him to create off the bounce if the ball is swung to him in crunch time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

T-Money, Winderman is a windbag. He’s been covering the team from the beginning of their existence. He’s grandfathered in. He is the least respected member of the local Heat coverage here. He’s a dummy. I’ve met him several times. He hates me. Want to know why? ‘Cause I’ve called him out on his sh*t reporting and I have more “sources” than he does. I’ve done this in front of his peers and a couple of sports bars I’ve been at when he was there. He hates Chalmers because Chalmers treats him like sh*t. So do others on the squad. Wade is fair to him…so he loves Dwyane. He’s got a hard on for Lebron. Why? Lebron doesn’t give him the time of day. Bosh is cordial with him….so he doesn’t ever come down hard on Bosh. He LOVES Haslem like a ghey partner ’cause Haslem has given him numerous one on one stories for the Sentinel. I know all this sh*t firsthand. He hated Beasley and Cook too because they clowned him on his appearance and his attitude. Chalmers did that too. Hence…the still standing grudge. Arroyo was always cool with him…hence the still present man-crush. Fu*k that clown and his fuc*ing mailbag. Dude picks the least resistant questions each day and barely puts the effort in to answer them. I read his sh*t every day too…..so I can have ammo next time I see his bald a*s.

  • T-Money

Allen: Amen, I’m tired of Coach freezing up and getting all tight in the playoffs. Run som damn sets. This goes for Spo, Thibgs, Brooks. Phil, Pop, Doc are constantly running sets with multiple options.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

We’ll agree to disagree then, T-Money. Derrick Rose is going to make the right play. Whether that means taking and making the clutch shot, or passing it off to a teammate. We’ve seen evidence of him doing both all year.
Thibs hasn’t abandoned his playbook, all of the crunch time plays are drawn up for Derrick Rose and he leaves it up to him to make the right decision off of those plays.
Sow hy not put the ball in the hands of the player who’s going to draw all of the defensive attention and who knows how to make the right decisions? It makes sense.
Like I keep telling Eboy who does the same thing as you do which is question the Bulls: Chicago is fine.
It’s the Heat you really need to be concerned with.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I did not say KD creates the shots. I said Westbrook gets KD off, then he follows.
Kind of how Isiah got Dumars off, then got his buckets. You get the other players cooking because as the point guard you can call your number at any time and get a shot at any time. You dominate the damn ball!
Let’s be real. WEstbrook is shooting 39 percent from the floor in the playoffs. Durant was shooting 47 percent. And Westbrook only shot three fewer shots than Durant.
Ridiculous, at least to me, and it should be for you considering how you kill Kobe for inefficiency.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Like I keep telling BC who does the same thing as you do which is question the Heat: Miami is fine.
It’s the Bulls you really need to be concerned with.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

The only people who have consistently doubted Chicago are Heat fans. The same can’t be said in reverse tho.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Jealousy and stupidity usually go hand in hand.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kevin Durant is better at creating a shot then Russell Westbrook. A good shot atleast. Westbrook is a SG he is a great scorer, elite defender, but sub-par as a PG. Taylor you got into an argument with the Chicagoians and a few other people about how you thought Rose wasn’t a PG because of how much he shoots, it doesn’t make sense that your defending someone whose shot selection is clearly worse that plays the same position.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I doubt Chicago, and I can care less how good Miami does. Just as long as the best teams meet in the finals.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Boston/Thunder still seems plausible.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

And that’s running rampant in Heat nation right now, E.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

@T-money – dumb is a little harsh, but if I’m picking someone on my team to make the right play in crunch time, the big guys are the last guys I’m relying on. KG isn’t fast enough to recover anymore. That’s why the Celtics have been getting killed on drives to the hoop since they traded Perkins. Dwight is athletic enough to recover, but he doesn’t recover by getting to a spot, he recovers by trying to block a shot which leaves him vulnerable to fouls. Joel Anthony is the exact player that I’m picturing when I think of a big man that has no idea where he should be on the court…at least that’s what I saw in the RS Miami games I’ve seen. I’ll give you Bosh though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I love Russ but he didn’t look to happy when KD absolutely took over and destroyed the Nugs in the 4th, usually he gets all pumped up. But everybody here throwing him under the bus like that after 2 games just makes me sick. This is beyond ridiculous. Russ is one of the best young PG’s in the game, yes he likes to shoot, so what? KD leads the league in scoring so obviously he gets the ball. Russ is his running mate and he can take over games too if people hadn’t noticed. In the beggining of the year people were seriously saying Russ is probably the best player of the 2 and even KD got questions about, saying that he was ‘fine with it’ as long as they keep winning. Russ will prove his worth against LA and then everybody will be talking sh.t about how RW is just as good as Rose (he´s not BTW).

  • JTaylor21

AllenP, who knew that you were bring shooting percentages into the conversation, thanks for the blindside. Well since we have delved into the efficiency aspect, I doubt you labeled KD a ball-hog and a chucker when he was shooting in the low 30s during last year’s first round series vs LA while Westbrook was the only reason it went to 6gms.
I find it hysterical that you are quick to judge a cat off of just two bad games, keep it up Judge Dredd.

  • neaorin

Momentum is overrated. The Spurs needed two consecutive huge shots in order to stay alive…

Before tonight, I wasn’t convinced the Grizzlies could win a Game 7 in San Antonio if it comes to that. Now? I’m more than convinced.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

And I’m OK with people still doubting the Bulls. What else is new? Regardless, Chicago has been proving doubters wrong all year, leaving people with no recourse other than to constantly be on the hunt for new things to question. It’s cool.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    anyways.
anybody else think the magic are coming back? i do. i don’t think either team is gonna match up well with chicago.
if ORL 3pt shot isn’t falling, they’re done. and i just dont believe in ATL.

  • JTaylor21

NBK, ¿Qué. When did I ever saying anything about Westbrook being a great PG? I have the same feeling about Rose and Russ, they are both shoot first, scoring PGs that lack the court vision and the ability to control of the game from the PG spot. By control, I don’t mean scoring, look at the way CP and SNash can dominate a game without taking that many shots. That’s the definition of a true PG which is something that Rose/Russ will never be.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Oh I C. I disagree that’s what a PG is but I understand what your saying. — You do understand the difference in role between Westbrook and Rose right? And will you at least admit its pretty ridiculous that considering their roles Westbrook only shooots 2 less shots a game? Because if Rose had Durant I highly highly doubt he would be putting up that many shot attempts.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    JTaylor
Actually, you are completely wrong. T-Money can vouch that I was critical of Durant because we both were last year as he insisted on jacking horrible jumper after horrible jumper while Ron Artest bodied him up. Westbrook deserved the bulk of the shots in that series because he had the obvious Derek Fisher mismatch, but Durant was intent on proving he was the man.
Chuckers take the shots Westbrook took. Doesn’t mean he will always be a chucker. Zach Randolph was one of the worst black holes in the league, not he’s hitting cutters like Chris Webber.
But, I have been consistent. I believe in shooting when you need to shoot and passing when you need to pass. Going overboard in either direction is bad. Which is why I’ve complained about Rondo over passing as well.

  • J-MAC

If Westbrook leaves OKC they wont be even close to the same level they are now. Granted Westbrook does take some bad shots but he is a top pg and gives OKC one of the best 1 2 punch in the league. For OKC sake hope they can work this out if there even is an issue.

  • JTaylor21

“Proving doubters wrong”, word? Getting out the first round is proving doubters wrong to Bulls fans, damn what’s going happen when they get out the second round? A parade down Michigan Avenue Bridge?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    *now

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

PG’s come in MANY different styles and have been since the game has been played. To imply or insinuate that there is only one “true” way to play the position is ridiculous.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Struggling to beat a 37 win team is the start of great things.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Sorry for that fellas. That was almost trolling on my part.
I have had doubts about the Bulls as champions purely because on paper, who really sees a team of Rose/Bogans/Deng/Boozer/Noah plus a solid, defensive minded bench winning it all. Alas, the games are not played on paper, and the Bulls won 62.
Westbrook is weird, he is always animated when his team mates make great plays, he is part of the All-NBA bench team (my list of best team mates when on the bench) along with Patty Mills, Nate Robinson, Tony Allen and others, yet he seemingly has a very big ego that can and has caused friction.7
Eboy, got any more stories like that on Winderman? That was fascinating to read. I have a huge doubt in beat writers as is, they all seem to have personal vendettas.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

J-Mac – Noone is saying OKC should let Westbrook walk. Pairing him and Nick Collison for CP3 though, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. (I know its unlikely, nobody reem me about how impossible that would be)

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Proving doubters wrong means Chicago not being able to compete in the East with Miami, Orlando or Boston. Finishing higher than the Milwaukee Bucks. DRose being able to shoot from the outside consistently. Him being MVP. Thibs being a good coach. And yes, even getting out of the first round.
I’ve had all of these arguments here. So, you were saying?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

So is not closing out a team in convincing fashion on your home court, E. But as I’ve already told you months ago, this is the end of the road for Miami.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Who else should be on the best bench team mate list?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    struggling? bulls won 4-1.
and i doubt BC was referring to getting out of the first round as proving doubters wrong.
more like, the bulls won’t be any better than a 4th seed, or Rose won’t be MVP, or bulls can’t beat miami

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Oh Chicago definitely been proving doubters wrong, I had basically guaranteed they would finish 4th or 5th and play Atlanta at the beginning of the season and I think that was about the average expectation. I also laughed at Rose when he said “why can’t I be the MVP?” – so yeah, they have been proving me wrong all season atleast.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Kobe Bryant is an idiot. He cannot shoot above 45% FG now, yet he wants to play in an era where they were more physical.

  • JTaylor21

I didn’t know they were handing out trophies for RS and first round success. If that’s the case, what’s their reward for extended playoff success? 72 virgins?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

yeah Alball the lakers have been playing great Defense on chris paul, nice strategy to leave the big man on him and not trap what so ever.

  • dsleepy

Jahmai, I think people are upset over Russ because they know that as a team, the Thunder have so much potential. But the defined roles are there for a reason, mainly to execute a game plan. If Robin tries to usurp Batman and causes locker room turmoil – in the PLAYOFFS, no less – it could derail the team’s chance at greatness. It’s hard to be the #1 guy because of the pressure on you, but it’s even harder to accept being the #2 when you feel like you’re just as good but don’t get the credit for it. I think that’s where Westbrook is at.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

  • T-Money

Diesel: Oh wow, you are so off on this one. Bigs are the most important players on defense, especially since you can’t touch people on the perimeter anymore. They’re the quarterbacks of defense, usually barking instructions to the perimeter guys. KG still is one of the best at showing and recovering. Dwight is arguably the best in the league at doing this and he does recover to a spot, Orlando has one of the most structured help and recover schemes in the NBA. Anthony ALWAYS knows where he is on the DEFENSIVE end of the court. Dribblers often go east-west when they try to run a PnR on his man. It’s really weird that you seem to imply a correlation between lack of ball skils on the offensive end and basketball IQ on the defensive end.

  • http://Slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Haha, thanks nbk. I didn’t know you were following.

  • JTaylor21

I’m just asking an honest question. Dude’s talking about the bulls proving doubters wrong during the RS like any of that matters in the long run. So what if they get knocked out in the 2nd round, what would have all that RS and first round success done for them? Seeing that the Bulls are now the proverbial favorites to come out of the East, can they at least make it to the ECF before we start all the “proving doubters wrong” talk?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i’m that sooper fadeaway fella. – And Joel Anthony is also pulling a “chicago bulls” on me, I thought he shouldn’t even be playin in the NBA and so far he’s been the Heat best Center. so I apologize Joel, you still kinda suck though.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    Someone has stolen airs identity!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

JT – Well considering the age of the bulls best player, and the importance of confidence in the NBA i would conclude that all of this regular season success is great for Chicago, Derrick Rose inparticular. He now knows that he can lead a team to the best record in the league, understands how to control a game (whether you believe it or not) and also understands how long and hard it is to carry a team through an entire season. He still has lessons to learn in the playoffs, you can’t just expect every team to win the title or get far in the playoffs. Some teams have to loose, so no matter what happens to Chicago from here on out they have gained some valuable experience/confidence this season that can only serve to benefit them in the future. Plus you just like downplaying everything until your right, then you like to rub it in and gloat. Seems to be no winning with you

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

nbk….you need to change that Twitter handle…I had no idea that was you for a minute too.

  • T-Money

The Miami-Boston series will be decided by Christopher Wesson Bosh. Laugh all you want but he’s bringing it so far in the playoffs. He’s been Miami’s most consistent player and held his own against a rugged 4 like EB. When he’s being assertive, Miami is very tough to beat. Ask the Lakers. (and nobody is talking about this but KG has been barking a lot less since Perks left town. it’s funny that everyone – including Phil Jax – assumed that it would be the other way around.)

Care to comment on any of that stuff? Of course you don’t.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

What’s your point with the Cavs? Nobody said The Bulls won a title. They defied expectations, proved the doubters wrong. If they win the title they do it AGAIN. you know, because you can do that more then once, even in the same season/month/year/day – what’s your point?

I just realized that the title “Stats Are for Pus*ies” may alienate a ton of the SLAM fam from being listeners.

BC, if you were talking strictly RS success then yes, the Bulls proved a lot of doubters wrong but why bring up RS success when we are in the middle of the most competitive and wide open playoffs in years?

In this case, the SAP would also mean second audio program, as it will be broadcast in spanish where available.

    “Dos Manute Bols!”

Enigmatic, it comes with the territory of having the most beloved player and soon to be MVP on the team. Deal with it.

I’m excited about the Heat N Celtics series as well. I think it will b classic and epic series…”Can’t Wait” in my Bart Scott voice.

Least rooting for Ray Allen again might be therapuetic.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

He’s a Sonics fan, new to the Lakers way.

  • JTaylor21

NBK, I still think that trotting Z and Bibby out there vs the celtics would he a disaster but I think Bibby should come off the bench vs the celts. There’s no way he’s keeping up with Rondo and even if they decide on letting him check Ray, he doesn’t have the foot speed or stamina to be chasing him all around those screens.
Z should start because JO isn’t much of a treat though I rather have Joel checking KG and GDavis while Bosh checks JO.
Mia’s chances at winning this series rests on their ability to guard the 3, force Rondo into becoming a scorer and rebounding.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Ray Allen and Shaq are the only players i like on the Celtics. Now that Nate Robb and TA are gone anyway. Yeah i’m a huge Washington Bullets fan and a Vancover Grizzly guy too.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well LBJ proved how effective he is guarding Paul Pierce. And I think it’s ok to start a game with Bibby on Allen, if he gets tired you just sub him out. I also think having Bibby in to start will keep Rondo honest on defense and prevent him from doing all that helping/cheating/gambling. Unless Chalmers is still a knock-down shooter this series, that guy changes more then my gf before we go to dinner.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Co-sign larrylegend – Memphis was up 3 pts. they should’ve fouled the Spurs immediately and send them to the line for 2 pts. instead of letting them have a shot at 3.

If you followed Laker history or grew up a Laker fan, or understood how die hard Laker fans feel you would get it. But your new, joined in this decade, its understandable. You already know I don’t consider you a true laker fan, its not anything new.

So jtaylor underestimates the Bulls by saying they won’t achieve several different regular season milestones. And when they do, and someone brings it up, then the regular season doesn’t matter?
Then when that regular season record, which doesn’t matter, gives the Bulls a first round match up with an 8th seeded team and the bulls win, that also doesn’t matter because its against an 8th seed?
And even though jtaylor has stated multiple times “can Rose at least win a playoff series before you make him the MVP”, Bulls fans are still not allowed to be happy because none of that matters in his mind.
Which now brings us to, “can the Bulls at least get to the ECF before you celebrate” and when they do jtaylor will be the first post on TPU saying “Damn you Rose peddlers are acting like you won the championship”.
@jtaylor – did I get that right? Just want to make sure I’ve dumbed up my normal thought process enough to accurately portray you.
Dude is depressed. Can someone please check in on jtaylor and make sure he doesn’t own any shotguns with triggers large enough to fit his big toe?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

“Veiled Insults Are For Pussies” I’m liking that one as the podcast title now.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought we cleared up “your” and “you’re” yesterday?

  • JTaylor21

I can see now that oversensitivity isn’t strictly a female trait, it also resides in men.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

are sensative people the latest addition to the growing list of things you hate jtaylor? I’ll add it to your list right here under “my life”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Catfight!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i’m honestly under the impression that Taylor is drunk. Who is being sensitive? Diesel? for pointing out things you said and calling you out on it? That’s not sensitive IMO, that’s more like, not liking when people act like they know everything and calling them out when the opportunity arises. Unless I’m “sensitive” then that’s cool, i’ll try and call up my buddy hollinger and see if he has a way to calculate just how “sensitive” i am.

  • JTaylor21

    NBK, you’re a funny cat.
Y’all need people like me so you could point your f*cking fingers and say that’s the bad guy. So what that make you, good? You’re not good, you just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don’t have that problem, I always tell the truth even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Make way for the bad guy. There’s a bad guy coming through! Better get outta his way!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Just straight slurring his typing^^

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

“I always tell the truth even when I lie” that’s cute. — I would not put myself on a side of good and evil, are you like trying to make me your nemesis or somethin lol? If your leaving that’s cool, see ya man. Or wait, are you coming through? I’m confused.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Godfather if you wanna watch a good movie. Scarface if you wanna watch some mother f*kers git shot up and see a guy do a huge mountain of coke and then proceed to grab tommy guns and run into a warzone.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

That “T-Baby” comment was not me. – smh slam it’s no fun when that happens

  • http://www.twitter.com/_enigmatic1 Enigmatic

    LakeShow is…actually pretty accurate.
    Ha ha.
Godfather is one of the best movies of all time.
But sometimes you just wanna watch a movie about someone truly not giving a f*ck.
Carlito’s Way is pretty dope too.
Oh, and Montana’s little friend was an M16 with an M203 40 mike-mike grenade launcher.
