Report: Knicks Seeking Defensive-Minded Assistant Coach

Everyone knows that Mike D’Antoni needs help with his defense, and according to the NY Daily News, the Knicks are in search of someone who can lend him a hand in that department: “According to several sources, the front office will encourage D’Antoni to revamp his coaching staff to hire a defensive coach. In the past, D’Antoni has been reluctant to seek outside help, most famously refusing Steve Kerr’s request four years ago to hire Tom Thibodeau in Phoenix. Thibodeau landed in Boston in 2007, and helped the Celtics win the title three seasons ago. He now is head coach of the top-seeded Bulls. D’Antoni is under contract through next season and is expected to be retained after leading the Knicks to their first postseason appearance in seven years. However, under D’Antoni the Knicks have been among the league’s weaker defensive teams, which is something Walsh would like to change. Memphis assistant Dave Joerger, Orlando’s Steve Clifford, Portland’s Bill Bayno and Chicago’s Ron Adams are all regarded as top defensive coaches. Another possibility for the Knicks is Thibodeau’s replacement in Boston, Lawrence Frank, the former Nets’ coach. Frank’s contract expires this summer.”

No way to get a head coach with that mentality, huh?

Ron Adams wouldn’t leave Thibs’ staff to go to the Knicks.
And can’t believe D’Antoni didn’t want Thibs in PHX.
    What an idiot,.

why would you want a defensive minded assistant coach when you can have a defensive minded head coach. A defensive minded assistant coach would fight all day against a Head Coach like D’antoni who only gets defensive when somebody’s trying to tell him how to be defensive? Did I make myself clear? yes? no?

If I tell you no, robb, will you get defensive about it?

robb, you mean to say d’antoni gets offended when questioned about his defensive schemes? or is defensive about his offensive oriented coaching style being questioned since they hardly play defense.

Gary Payton, I hear he wants to get into coaching. He’ll probably be B-Shaw’s assistant in LA next year come to think of it.

The Knicks mostly need a defensive-minded starting 5, and a defensive-minded backup wing. Melo and Amare aren’t going to change now. They am who they am. What they need is to be surrounded by role players that can help cover their weaknesses.

@Eboy – I’m not sure that changing the head coach would solve much. D’Antoni is a good offensive coach. With some of the awful, bone-headed plays drawn up to close quarters and games in these playoffs so far, getting rid of an offensive guy like D’Antoni would only make things worse. It seems like half the coaches in these playoffs don’t even have a decent under-the-basket inbounds play. D’Antoni’s teams always put the ball in the hoop, their problem is keeping the other guys from putting the ball in the hoop at a more efficient rate.

I’m with Eboy (for once) and man, bring back Jeff Van Gundy and DEMOTE Antoni to offensive coach or some other sh*t like whatever Herb Williams does (what the hell does he do?!). The Knicks have shown they CAN play defense when they want to, but they’re only motivated here and there. They need someone who can hold them accountable to that ish. They’re going to let Antoni finish his contract, and if they can wing getting CP3, they’ll try to entice Doc or even Phil Jackson to takeover… and please, can men stop wearing Uggs?! I mean for real, we live in the hood, man. Y’all not “thUggs” and never will be. Y’all to the gay community, what the D-League is to the NBA. Just taking baby steps…
