Roy Wants Starting Spot Back Next Season

Brandon Roy told The Oregonian that he intents to start next season. Considering what he did to the Mavs in Game 4, we’re not counting him out yet: “Brandon Roy says he intends to work this summer to come back as a starter for the Trail Blazers next season. ‘I’m going to want to push to be a starter and help this team win. The goal doesn’t change,” Roy said Friday as the Blazers left for the offseason. ‘I think I definitely want to help this team get in position to win and get out of the first round.’ Roy admitted that he thought his season, and possibly his career, might be over while he sat out more than two months treating his chronically ailing knees.”

Blazer fans had better keep their fingers crossed. If Roy and Oden are ever healthy then wow. Oden in the limited times he’s played has lots of potential. Dunks hard, blocks shots, looking like true old school center. Very dominating.
Roy is awesome 2 guard. We’ll see.

Roy might be hoping a lockout gives him more time to get healthy, though from all accounts it isn’t something that is going to heal? Shortened season would do him good regardless, but I still don’t want it to happen.

IF and thats a big if, he would’ve never got injured I think he could be a top 5 player in the L.

  • ai come back

no he WOULD be a top 5 player in the L

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

^Disagree. He was a really good player, but his skillset doesn’t approach the top 5 even at his absolute peak.

  • Heals

Amen Tealish, people always say that stuff, but there can’t be 10 players in the top 5 – KD, Rose, LBJ, DHoward all locks so that only leaves 1 spot and about 8-10 players fighting for it and he ain’t one of them. Love his game, but would he be better served trying to be Odom like 6th man (start when needed/goto guy on the 2nd unit)???

  • JTaylor21

Dude has one good game and he’s ready to steal the SG spot from a guy that played well the entire season? Talk about being selfish.

  • hambone

just saw the headline and thought he was going to china to play

    @ Tealish and Heals,
I say a healthy Broy is better than Drose: same amount of points, slightly less assists, more rebounds, more clutch (yes, clutcher than Drose).

That’s all fine and dandy, but what about Wes Matthews, the guy that brought them to the playoffs?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Bulls should make a run at Wes Matthews–he’d be awesome in Chicago.

  • http://Slamonline.com DatKid

Yeah Wes Matthews would be nice with the bulls. Personally tho..I feel like this is what Roy should say…every player should want to start or at least be at the top of their game. and Rose>Roy but Roy would give you less turnovers and can play like 3 positions so there’s that

  • bashmo

@Max also a much higher efficiency from both the field and from three.

  • deafshooter

play for it then. reputation doesn’t mean you get the spot.

    Roy better than Rose?! Wow.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Roy has been our “superstar” every year so far up until this year. If the knee is better, give him the starting gig, and the ball. If not, put him in cruise control and start Matthews.. I’m a die-hard Blazer fan, but kinda hoping for some moves to be made this summer.

  • max

at Tariq: I think that’s not too far fetched. Compare the 3rd seasons of them both:
Per Game (Comparing Broy 08/09 with DRose 10/11)
    Points: Broy 22.6 DRose 25
    Rebounds:4.7 4.1
    Assists: 5.1 7.7
    Steals: 1.1 1.0
    FG%/3P%/FT% .48/.377/.824 .445/.332/85.8
    Turnover: 1.9 3.4

    Advanced Stats:
    Win Shares:13.5 13.1
    ORtg: 123 113
    DRtg: 109 103
    Usage%: 27.4 32.2

Team Wins:Blaers 08/09: 54 in a tough Western Conference with many 45+ Win Teams.
Bulls 10/11 62 in a weak Easter Conference where a team 8 wins under 500 reaches the Playoffs.

Kobe Bryant:”Brandon Roy has no weaknesses.”

This is ridiculous. Wes Matthews is the reason the Blazers were able to sustain. My god, Brandon.

  • SeatownJeff

    Brandon Roy is a starter.

  • PorrtBlazerFan

The problem is that he excells with the starting unit. It’s hard for him to be effective coming off the bench as a backup PG with teams defense centered around just stopping him. Roy is like Kobe. He needs a decent amount of shots to get in a rhythym and playing very few minutes then all of a sudden going to the bench takes away the rhythym he had up to that point. Matt Hasselbeck in the NFL has the same rhythym problem with the seahawks in the passing game when the seahawks go 3 and out every series of downs they play. Bottom line is that he needs substantial minutes to be effective. I understand all of this because I play a fair amount of basketball in my free time and notice the longer I play combined with the number of shots I attempt that my body gets into “the zone” and doesn’t feel stiff anymore. I would assume Brandon Roy has the same issue where it takes his body a great deal of minutes/shot attemps to loosen up after coming off the bench.

  • Raseven

Kobe is number until he hangs it up

  • All Day

B-Roy stated that he intends to work hard this summer so that he can push for the starting position. B-Roy recognizes that he will not be handed the starting position…he knows he needs to EARN the starting position.

  • Hursty

Bring Gerald Wallace off the bench. See if he can take the super-sub role and back-up Aldridge/Roy at the 4/3 spots.

  • Hursty

Do I think that’ll happen? Absolutely not. But if Roy is healthy enough to start, then it’s worth a shot. Unless you wanna go crazy and make Andre Miller your 6th man with Roy as PG.
