The Lakers and Mavs Don’t Like Each Other at All

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Things got more than a little testy at Staples Center last night, with five players (and several fans) getting tossed out, and somehow, Ron Artest wasn’t involved in any of the pushing and shoving.

Artest was too busy flexing and kissing his biceps.

Despite Ron-Ron’s absense from the beefing, plenty of players let emotions run high, as things got even wilder in the stands.

The hostility between the two teams had been simmering well before the game started.

From the Daily News:

The ongoing verbal sparring between Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the Lakers continued this week, with Cuban joking that he would like to see Ron Artest playing in the post during the game between the teams Thursday at Staples Center. “Anything that puts the ball in Ron Artest’s hands is always a good thing,” Cuban said. “And you can tell him that I’ll even take him out for ice cream. Of all the choices you have on that team, you want Ron Artest making decisions in the triangle.”

Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who likes to crack back at Cuban just as frequently and sarcastically, took another jab at his target when asked about Cuban’s comments. Jackson said Cuban likes to “prick the skin of people, but he’s not a player. He just sits behind the bench with his sun-tanned face and makes comments like that,” Jackson continued. “He’s got nothing to do with it. I know he’s provided a great roster and it’s almost as good as money can buy, but not quite.”

As for the game, the Lakers quite simply punked Dallas in their most meaningful matchup of the season, sending an unmistakable message with a possible second-round Playoff meeting on the horizon.

Kobe Bryant didn’t mind seeing three of his teammates get ejected; in fact, he felt this was a good thing for his surging squad: “It brings us closer together,” Bryant said. “It’s as simple as that. We can’t go for that, man.”

If Cuban bumped into a pissed off Artest in the tunnel after a game and said that, I’m not sure he would see another day.

HUGE win for the Lakers last night. In regards to the 4th Quarter scuffle, that was a cheap “I’m not shooting well and I’m frustrated” foul from Terry and I like Barnes coming to his defense. Like he and Kobe said afterwards, they’re a family. Granted, he deserved to be tossed. But, I hope he doesn’t get any extra for knocking the Mavs asst. coach down. That guy should not have been wrapping up his waist. Barnes was exiting (albeit unhappily) and he didnt need to get humped by someone that wasn’t involved.

  • James

jason terry is a punk for what he did last night. too bad nobody on the mavs had his back maybe we woulda seen a good lil brawl lol

  • MUBWAR

the NBA is back y’all. rivalries all across the league. Even Big Z got in with Wall

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

it cant be a rivalry if the lakers always kick they a**

  • Bruno

LA owns Dallas and always it’s goin’ to be like that, that’s why LA isn’t afraid of them

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

You know JTerry wouldn’t try that shove on Ron Artest. I’m just sayin..

  • Robb

Dallas is so frustrated, they just can’t beat LA. And they never will.

  • tRay

Last time I checked the Mavs beat them this season? Not hating just stating facts even though it doesn’t mean ish when the playoffs roll around.

  • http://slamonline.com David Cassilo

Love the Steve Blake pic. Hopefully he gets more pub in a future issue of SLAM…

  • Robb

    @tRay when it matters dumass

  • http://www.twofistedpress.com Pve84

Uh wait, rivalries aren’t defined by “scuffles” these days are they?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

im not sure why, but i would’ve taken blake against terry. he just seems like he’d be a wily fighter

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

That was the most fun that I’ve had watching a basketball game. Go Lakers!!!

  • bigslim31

@Nick Tha Quick – if you or Jason Terry actually knew about Steve Blake’s fight game there is no way Terry would do that – other than where he had the comfort of not being really hit. Steve would have moped the floor with Jason all day long. This is a dude that was ready to throw with Dwight Howard. Trust me, none of those dudes want ANYTHING to do with Blake. Promise.

Stupid “x-factor”, yth man “extraordinaire” JET.
Way to act tough, the main word being act.
I’ve stated it before and it’s crystal clear, Terry is an undersized, streaky shooting Guard who is always exploited on D by bigger 2′s and balks under pressure (see the last two playoff series and this season’s Laker battles).
Meanwhile Stevenson (tough on D, adequate 3pt shooter) played 5 garbage time mins.
Roddy, only the most athletic Mav who also needs minutes to gain confidence, played 15.
While Chandler was killing himself against Bynum etc, Mahinmi was hardly used.
Rick Carlisle has no clue how to use his assets. No. Clue.

  • Yesse

Jason Terry made a pretty unsportmanship move. I would be pissed off too.

  • Morgan

^^ “Skinny guys fight till they’re burger”

  • tRay

@Robb you may want to learn how to spell dumbass correctly before you call me one.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Meanwhile, Dirk was busting his ass trying to keep his team in it. 2011 Nowitzki hardly grabs double digit rebounds anymore and he got 13 against the toughest frontcourt to play against right now.
Way to waste the chance AND get an unnecessary drubbing, Mavs.
PS: Cubes needs to chill and stop giving LA/Phil added ammo. Wins early in the season or while Lakers were slumping don’t count.
This one, with both teams jockeying for position, this one was a must-win.
    Not a good look, Mavs.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

They aren’t a big enough threat for me to dislike them. They are the cute lil Mavs ran by Markie Mark.
    Let be real.

  • mickfanning

great another rigged laker game. its not that i hate the lakers they used to be my favorite team, its just over the past idk 7 years now i would really like to see the officials call the games fairly, if there gunna win a title without the refs (havn’t done it yet) then hats off to em but the way laker games are called in the kobe dynasty just aint fair compition and makes it no fun to watch laker games.

  • JTaylor21

Word to the wise; don’t get too excited about one team’s supposed RS dominance over another.

  • add

loved the game, it was so intense, i hope they see each other in the playoffs

  • http://www.slamonline.com Sergio

@jtaylor21, The lakers own the mavs in the RS and in the Playoffs.

  • tRay

@Segio, I don’t remember them ever playing each other recently in the playoffs. I may just be having a retard moment cuz I know my Lakers lol but when was this?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

1988, last time these two met in a series. Regardless, if those two started a play-off series right now, and you did not have the Lakers winning, you would not be very intelligent.

  • T-Money

“almost as good as money can buy, but not quite” ethered.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Tina Turner

The Mavericks should be run by Sara Palin.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Tina Turner

The Teabagger team of the NBA

  • James

lmao at mickfanning and his conspiracy theory

  • bashmo

the lakers havent faced the mavs in the playoffs since acquiring Pau Gasol. Maybe in the past with Shaq in tow the Lakeshow mightve taken a series or two, but we havent seen this relatively new lakers squad go up against Dallas in a head to head series yet. Maybe this postseason.

  • Riggs

mavs miss tough juice. cause i sure do.

  • Showtime Era

Lakers haven’t faced the Mavs in the playoffs since 1988 because the Mavs are soft ass habitual 1st round CHOKERS !!!! Check the stats. Since they blew a 2-0 lead in 2006 Finals they have lost in first round of the playoffs twice in the past 5 seasons.

  • TL

Steve Blake trains MMA in the offseason. Blake woulda beat his ass into submission.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

I’m as big a Lakers hater as they come, but lets face it – the Mavs are pretenders and will always be pretenders. Cuban running his mouth off now will only make it worse for them when they have an early exit. I wonder how many players on the Mavs wish he’d just shut up?

  • Riggs

oh also about steve blake? dude wouldve knocked terry out. Do not mess with short white guys who look like leprechauns.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Is there any player more annoying than Matt Barnes?

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

Somewhere, Charles Oakley was watching that game and getting very excited.

  • truthteller

I hope they both meet in the playoffs!

  • KwamePooh

@nick i dont think artest would notice it if he got shoved by terry…

  • JTaylor21

I’m with Teddy on this one. That clown a** Matt Barnes swears he tough, beating up a broad don’t make you tough.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    I love this ish.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    Lol, I’m a die-hard Lakers fan, I still don’t like Matt Barnes, and he’s a Laker.
