Doc Rivers Thinks Miami Threw Cheap Shots in Game 1

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Game 1 of the highly-anticipated Miami Heat/Boston Celtics series was a role reversal of sorts for both teams, with Miami acting like the intimidator for the first time since the two squads began their blood war.

Behind Dwyane Wade’s offensive explosion (38 points), and their physicality, the Heat knocked the Celtics to the ground, and took them out mentally in a very chippy series opener.

Following the tough loss, C’s head coach Doc Rivers said the Heat threw some cheap shots.

From Yahoo! Sports:

From the moment the Miami Heat gathered on a military base for training camp, they’ve had it pounded into them they would need to be tougher, nastier and fiercer to beat the Boston Celtics. Within the walls of the locker room, this has been the constant mantra from Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra: Boston, Boston, Boston. The Heat know people believed the Celtics had punked them over and over, that they were too timid to stand strong with the bullies.

This was on the Heat’s minds when James Jones came crashing down on Paul Pierce’s(notes) head after a pump fake sent Jones into the air. And this was on Dwyane Wade’s mind when he had far more interest in plowing Pierce on a screen than fighting through it to get to a shooter. The Heat inspired Pierce to lose his cool for two technical fouls, costing him most of the fourth quarter and a chance to come back in the Celtics’ 99-90 Game 1 loss. Inside the losing locker room, in a quiet corner of American Airlines Arena, a livid Celtics coach Doc Rivers [said]: “It wasn’t physical – it was cheap-shot stuff.”

Ultimately, the physical nature of the series will not determine its winner. Talent and execution on both ends of the floor will. Physicality, and so-called cheap shots will just be the icing on top of the proverbial cake.

The Celtics have a couple of days to re-adjust, and to prepare their own surely definitive response for Game 2 on Tuesday night in Miami.

Anyone know who Labron is? Where is the Philosopher when we need him. Didn’t he play for a rock band or sumn?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Oh Doc….we know you want to leave Boston after the season, so stop crying, let your “tough” players play your game, and take some of your own medicine from a team that’s not mystified by your squad anymore.

  • Renex

Man up Doc, thats playoff ball

  • tomtom

Anyone who can’t spell Lebron isn’t worth listening to…

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I hope Shaq comes back and absolutely lays out Lebron when he drives. Can’t wish anything bad on Wade though, he’s loyal and an amazing player; he’ll be the reason they get a ring.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

“Labron” laughs at your jilted lover contact and hard fouls.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I hope the Celtics win and I hate the Celtics.

  • AD

the heat are gonna get help to win the series just like they did when they was in the finals….. I love dwade and lebron but their not tough guys… Dwade is a model and lebron is dancing cartoon….. It shud be a good series tho if the payed refs let em play……..

  • Fat Lever

I’m interested to see what kind of game Pierce has in game 2. He’s one of those guys that when he’s focused, he can be a killer.

  • Swizz

Any man who coaches Kevin Garnett should keep his mouth shut about cheap shots

  • shuref00t

Celtics complaining about cheap fouls? Oh, the irony!

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

You guys remember Michael Scorn from last year’s playoffs? He was a Cavs fan I think. Anyway, I think Byebye is the same guy.

  • rich

james jones had 25 cheap shots had nothing to do with that so i think you need to gameplan shutting his ass down and keep it close before you complain about nonesesnse

  • Final Score Celtics Win 4 – 1

    Thats it ….

  • TheNightWatch*8*

    Celtics in 6.

  • Yesse

Well, i agree. The second thing i was also disappointed in, the refs were blowing the whistle like Jenna Jameson. It’s the playoffs so let the guys play!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

LOL doc u the coach of the Celtics, the team where the “cheap shot” was invented.
    BTW: GRIZZLIES!!

  • KPEEK

First of all, the CEltics are all cheap shotters and cry babies..
Doc Rivers and his son can shove it because thats all they are!
    Heat in 6!

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I don’t care how many whistles are blown, so long as it goes both ways. Which clearly, it didn’t.

  • wadecounty954

James Jones did a smart move in trying to come down on pierce’s arms so he dosent make the shot and 1.. Paula Pierce should stop advancing herself on people like she did yesterday, I read on her lips “come here so I can kiss you”

  • vtrobot

    C’s in 5.

  • Ryan uzzi

Oh yes DOC run that mouth how about that bear hug from Rondo when LeBron was bout to slam on a homie?? Biggest cheap shot of the game…Heat in 4 read em in weep they want it worse….LEGO

  • Scala

@wadecounty i bet you wont call paul pierce paula to his face, and way to say the obvious that james jones tried to not let pierce get the shot off, you are an idiot

  • Scala

@rich you are an idiot as well

  • Hambone

Is this the same dic rivers that played for the Knicks?

  • Brothamn

Doc Rivers never ceases to amaze me. Earlier in the in the season when KG was throwing low blows and calling people cancer patients Doc defended him, as he should have. Now the heat are responding, as they should have too. Neither team can complain

  • MLK4Life

Celtics in 6. They don’t have a consistent team. They beat up on bad teams during the season and were mediocre against good teams. James Jones won’t shoot like he did yesterday consistently. It’s going to be Wade and LeBron in isolation more and more as this series continues which won’t get it done. Paul Pierce shouldn’t have gotten ejected yesterday. If Shaq comes back that will clog the middle and Bron and Wade won’t be attacking as much as they did yesterday. Celtics vs. Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals.

  • OneStep

This is all hot air. Both teams should check out the Bad Boys for a definition of “cheap shot” and then maybe they’ll understand what wimps they all are by comparison and how easy they’ve got it in a prima donna league. I’ve met tougher netballers than this lot! Man-up and play.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I’m sorry but the Rondo foul on the fast break was the dirtiest play of the game….after the Jermaine O’neal foul, wait, those are Celtics. — Doc Rivers and Paul Pierce are/were being stupid

  • robb

man, the refs sucked yesterday or what?

  • rikson

Yeah ,Doc acting like that matters…. Heat gave them NO chance yesterday!

  • Benn0

@ByeBye, eboy and the rest of you closet heat fans… it was one game!!! James jones had a one off game. And i promise you that when bosh flops and does nothing again, there will be no bench to save you in game 2. Celtics in 6.

by the way lebrons playing tricks on your mind, because hes a FREE MASON!

Go on the nba site, watch highlights of heat vs celtics – and watch lebrons free mason pre-game routine!

  • R.I.P Osama

Doc Rivers, that’s playoff basketball man.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

lol please explain what him being or not being a free mason has to do with beating the Celtics? what’a a loon, you have been watching to much history channel

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

What I don’t like about the T-fouls Pierce got is that they came that quick.
I would warn him once that he has to leave the game if there is another incident.
Because you have to be real, Wade wanted Paul to get loose.

  • Brandon

Doc making excuses in a Lose that’s uncharacteristic..

  • don

james jones is going to be ready, a 3point king won’t miss that many OPEN shots.

  • hoodsnake

I’m just glad there wasn’t any stupid wheelchairs

  • kunal

I said it then and I’ll say it again and tomorrow it will be reality. Heat in 6. After their battles in the regular season you can see that the heat want this so much more than boston. I love the Bosotn unit but I can recognize that their time is done. THey shd have won it again last yr when it was their only chance. Shaq is a spent force he’s more a liability than an asset and that can be seen from mid series.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I think Doc is going to regret trying to pull a Phil Jackson strategy by whining to the press. Phil has 11 titles to his name. Doc has 1. You don’t carry that same clout, Mr. Rivers.

  • @DEKNOWZ

    It’s the playoffs. Man up!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    I almost joined the freemasons.
Just to see what the hell they’re all about.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I know a lot of what they are about. ANd winning or losing NBA games isn’t part of it, at all.

  • ECT

Wade has so much trouble guarding Ray… double P and KG just need to pick their games up. Ray is basically scoring at will.

  • burnt_chicken

Coaches consider political statements to the press/public to be fair strategy in the game–especially over a series. Phil Jackson, for example, proves that it works. Rivers is almost bound to say this, particularly as it also deflects some of the attention away from his captain getting that dumb technical for angrily nose-jabbing another guy’s face.

  • MLK4Life

Enough with the Free Mason crap with LeBron. Stop watching YouTube videos created by guys who have absolutely nothing to do with their time. Conspiracy theorists. If there are any 3 point kings in this series, it’s Ray Allen. James Jones won a trophy for shooting well one night. Celtics in 6.

  • g

ECT i think you got it the other way Ray has a hard time guarding Wade considering he scored 38 light ones on him
