End of the Road for Phil Jackson, Lakers

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Initially, he kidded reporters regarding his decision to retire from the NBA, as he has done so many times throughout his legendary coaching career. But, in the end, Phil Jackson admitted that he had coached his last game.

It was an inglorious, downright embarrassing conclusion to the greatest coaching run in the League’s history, as the Dallas Mavericks swept the Los Angeles Lakers out of the postseason, leaving a final, bitter taste in Jackson’s mouth.

Though things didn’t end the way he had hoped they would, Phil sounded relieved to see the Lakers’ frustrating year finally, mercifully come to an end:

“[It] feels really good to be ending this season to be honest with you. I came back this last year with some trepidation. Kobe’s knee was an issue and obviously our team was older. The thrill of trying to chase a three-peat is always an exciting thing. But, yes, I knew it was a big challenge for this team to three-peat. We’ve gone to the Finals and to go back twice and win it after losing ’08 puts a lot of strain on the basketball club from all angles: personalities, spiritually, physically, emotionally, and getting charged up for game after game and assault after assault when you go in and play a team. So, it was a challenge bigger that we could beat this year.”

(And you final game I assume? Was this your last game?) – “I haven’t answered that, have I? And you’re not going to force me to answer it. But, yes, this is in all my hopes and aspirations that this is the final game that I’ll coach. This has been a wonderful run. I go out with a sour note after being fined $35,000 this morning by the league, so that’s not fun having a feeling like I’ve been chased down the freeway by them. But as Richard Nixon says, ‘You won’t be able to kick this guy around anymore.’”

So, now, the Lakers’ offseason of uncertainty begins, where the search for answers will begin at the head coach position, followed by attempts to add quickness, three-point shooting and better bench production.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be fine — history shows that they always manage to bounce back — but Phil Jackson set a standard of excellence that will prove impossible to surpass, let alone match.

  • bull22

he should have retired last year with that epic win in game 7 and gone out a winner. but like a greedy card player, he overplayed his hand and the HOUSE collected in a ugly way…. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I’m willing to give D’Antoni another year, and if it don’t work, bring Phil to New York after he’s had a year off to recharge. Melo is the perfect ISO player for the Triangle.

Sad way for it all to end. Thanks for the memories Mr. Jackson

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

    Thanks Phil…….11 rings wow

  • JoeMaMa

@bull22: He made 10 million this year. Not thousand. MILLION. So turn off your computer, take a walk, get some fresh air, think about life, eat an apple. Then come back and write “he overplayed his hand and the HOUSE collected in an ugly way”. But doing that may break your brain and give you a seizure. So have paramedics on hand.

  • kh

    Thanks PJ, you’ll be missed!

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

The loss doesn’t bother me as much as Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom’s behavior. Shameful!!!

  • bull22

@joemama, it ain’t all about money otherwise these STUBBORN fools would not be trying hard to get that sixth title…. and YES the HOUSE did collect, because these LA BUMS were swepted!! hahahhahahahahahhahahahhahhahha

  • Zabba

Yeah, it’s not all about the money. Most ballers really play for the love of the game. But still, $10 million is still $10 million. I’d drop my pants and get in the backseat of a limo filled with Japanese businessmen for $10 million, and that’s something I hate.

@Zabba: “and that’s something I hate.” stating the obvious there? So long Phil… it’s going to be weird not having him or Sloan around next season. The times they are a changin.

greatest coach ever who coached some off the best players in the league, 11 rings is just crazy.
Good luck to the next LA Lakers coach:)

  • angus

not a laker fan, but certainly many people associated with basketball have learned alot from this man not only about ball but also about life (even though it was probably in a weird hippie sorta way) Peace out Phil and thanks for the memory’s!

  • Fat Lever

Zabba, that line made me crack the f up, even though I can’t tell if it was racist or not.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

I’ll miss him and his wit. The triangle, when run to perfection (and w/o Kobe breaking it) was a beautiful thing to watch. I like what he said about the young coaches and giving them a chance by leaving the business. I’d love to see what BShaw would do with a reconstructed Lakers team. Should be an interesting offseason for them and for the older teams that got pushed aside this postseason. Hello, Celtics? :)

  • Kas

It’s not racist if it makes fun of asians

  • Thijsie

“….impossible to surpass, let alone match.”

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

he ain’t coming back….you see that crippled walk out’ve AA arena and that smug smirk turn into near tears as soon as he entered the walkway. Is like that Boyz II Men record, the end of the road….B Shaw, you got the juice now big homie

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

Lol at the Lakersfans for saying their team can turn it on whenever they want to..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

He should have retired last season on top. The classic Phil Jackson died when he became a Californian.

  • http://Slamonline.com DatKid

Wow bulls22…you realize this guy helped make the franchise you so enthusiastically dickride great right? And that he’s the greatest coach ever? I seriously hope you die jackass

  • robb

I can handle the Lakers losing, but I hate how Odom and specially Bynum went for those cheap shots. Barea could’ve been seriously injured. You just don’t do that to another player. F*ck him I don’t want a guy like that playing for my team. Go to…Orlando or something.

  • whatever

overrated, had jordan and kobe, and he even said it himself kobe isnt coachable so how can you give him so much credit if he says something like that, im happy this hippie is gone, RED AUERBACH IS THE G.O.A.T.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1982

If by the house collecting in an ugly way you mean making more money that anyone here will ever see in a lifetime in one year, meanwhile taking his team to the second round, then yes, ugly as it gets.

  • underdog

Co-sign Jacqueline Mitchell (May.9 at 10:06 am) bigtime.

  • bull22

@datkid, such bitterness brother, awww its okay man.. anytime the LAKERS get spanked like that its gratifying because of their loud arrogant mouths….. this defeat tastes so sweet like
sweet potatoe pie that i dont have to hear kobe saying i got my own two threepeats…… hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah live long my brother!

  • Lawrence

Again, a win is a win. a loss is a loss. it is immaterial if you win or lose with a huge margin or a point. The Dallas Mavericks played at a level of excellence where they knocked down 3points shots at an extremely high percentage even with a hand on their faces. Another thing, is the bench scoring. The bench of the lakers offense fire power changed compared to the last 2 seasons. it is a wrong move for the lakers to give a way farmar, vujacic, powell and ariza. To haters, just give it to Lakers. i mean, come on men. The Lakers should be given the right credit for being the nba champs for 2 consecutive years… at least we got two rings in 3 attempts to the finals. While Lebron choked and the Boston big three will only have 1 because obviously, they will not win it this year.hehe..AMEN.

  • bull22

it would have been great to see PHIL and MJ do what JOHN ELWAY did and walk away while you are on top, personally don’t like how they ended their careers…. but it is what it is….. HUGE CONGRATS to the MAVS, for the spanking they laid on the lakers because not many can do that…..

  • OvaChicken

Phil was aight. I liked his zen approach. Stop your B.S. haterettes . How bad was Kobe & the rest of the squad though. They got their little bottoms spanked proper. ONTO THE NEXT. Go Heat !

  • OvaChicken

  • Heals

Great stuff from Phil during the press conference; kinda reminded me a kid after the bell rings on the last day of school…

  • Klav

taking the good with the bad. the loss hurts a lot. losing Phil hurts more. he’s an icon, a legend, the greatest basketball coach. MJ wouldn’t be the same without him and vice versa and LA wouldn’t have had 5 chips in the last decade. truly amazing, props Phil enjoy your wildneress get away.

  • Price

@lawrence. Your completely right about the player movement. By moving Farmar and Vujacic not resigning even Mbenga it changed the chemistry of the team. Though not the best I always have seen Jordan Farmar as a spark for the Lake show and Masheen as someone who could hit a couple treys when they needed it. Sure a better defensive team in Barnes and Steve Blake, but wasn’t that what Ron was for? I am a huge Lakers fan but not surprised that they didn’t reach the finals, just disappointed they got swept.
Enjoy your vacation hope you catch plenty of fish.

    Go Grizzlies.

  • MikeC.

Good run Phil. Time to shut ‘er down and spend your autumn years tending your dope garden and nailing your boss’ daughter.

  • http://slamonline.com AllDayEveryDay

@kas and @zabba, racist remarks, and then saying it’s not racist if it’s asians? Sounds like you too are more childish than lamar and bynum

  • http://theresastatforthat.blogspot.com Deron

Although I am sad to see the Lakers’ run end, I’m glad Kidd and Nowitzki are getting their shot to win a title. The Lakers were just embarrassing; they showed no heart. And to add injury to insult, Odom and especially Bynum acted like bad losers. A 36-point elimination loss by a defending champ is just unacceptable.

All I can say is thanx for the 6 titles he brought to the Bulls…and that’s it

  • Stefano

at the end of the day what NBA really miss is the best basketball to watch. We have been lucky to have Phil back after the Bulls days, then we have been lucky to have him back after the first LA 3 peat. NBA is business but Phil brings a more human being situation as any other team in the league giving meaning to players life behind basketball which is back on the field with the beautiful watching of his team play.
really hope he’ll back on coaching at least a couple of years bringing with him the staff team he builds in LA in order to keep the triangle alive otherwise we can refer to it just as “the legend of Triangle”.
Thanks Phil and enjoy your next journey whatever it is.
    warm regards
    Stefano
